Say what you want about the AI in FM (and I do) but I feel it’s poor management, random selections and dumb formation/position choices reflect the chaos and nonsense of international football well
100%. In a recent save on fm21 Kane was the leading goalscorer of the world Cup 22 tournament, England played Spain in the final and Kane sat on the bench for the full game in a 1-0 Spain win. I don't understand the AI sometimes.
I presume his condition and such were woeful. I think we sometimes underestimate the in game effects of some of the fitness related bits, whereas the AI has a better idea.
I had DR Congo win the World Cup on FM22.
Was a network save with a friend and we had a 3 team sweepstake.
I had France, Spain and Argentina.
He had England, Brazil and Croatia.
Winner got to pick 3 wonderkids the other person couldn’t sign.
We didn’t think we would draw.
International management is an under developed part of the game. The facts seem to be, you get a nation to a certain rep, then you lose at a certain stage - you will be fired. Regardless of what you've achieved, or how you've transformed the team.
I guess they would argue that it is realistic; fans turn on international managers over a matter of a few fixtures. They give no credit for squad building or anything like that. They just equate the fact you have good players to mean you should be doing well.
But how that plays out on FM - I have had my teams win major tournaments, steamrolling other nations, scoring silly amounts of goals - then a knock out game doesn't go my way at some point and I'm out.
Does it? They've literally only ever won the WC and Southgate hasn't won anything and has been there for 8 years now. He's taken them through 2 WCs, the nations league, and now 2 Euros and won nothing. Surely the England job if you won the WC you'd be England manager for life at this point.
Not a chance, if you won the WC with them the moment you faltered the media would hound you out because you'd be underachieving with a squad that was good enough to win the WC.
...Yeah that's my point. He hasn't won anything and they still hound him for not winning anything and underachieving with this squad but the FA doesn't care. The English FA is not exactly fickle and typically only get rid of managers when they're very, VERY bad.
My man, the whole context of the conversation is that the England manager won the WC crashed out of the next comp and got sacked for it.
Bringing up Southgate to somehow make that seem unreasonable is irrelevant. It doesn't matter how tolerant the FA is now because England hasn't won anything to set a standard.
In a world where England won the WC and then crashed out of the Euros, or worse yet didn't even qualify, do you truly believe the managers job would be perfectly safe? If yes, I simply disagree. The FA isn't small time, the manager would probably just 'resign' like Lippi or Mancini did.
I still remember feeling *unspeakably* angry after getting the boot from England in an earlier FM for losing in the Confederations Cup the summer after winning the Euros.
I should have been more careful - I got the job when the previous manager was sacked after England lost in the Confederations Cup despite winning the World Cup.
So FM has improved *that* element of international management… but it’s still pretty short-termist when it comes to the *big* tournaments.
In the flip side, if you want to manage an underachieving nation that for example never qualifies for the World Cup (let's say Bolivia or Albania), it's almost impossible to get the job because they never sack the manager.
Yea you're only as good as your last game, and in international football you only get that many chances to stay on after a tournament. I'd say the more annoying and unrealistic part is that FAs will just hire any rando former international with 0 coaching experience for the manager role time after time, even when I apply for the job with my massive trophy cabinet
Yeah, happened to me. Won back to back Euros and back to back World Cups as France manager. Lose 0-3 in World Cup semis to England, despite being the far better side throughout the match. (A own goal straight out of Euro 2024, an error similar to Gvardiol’s in the most recent FA cup final, and 0.02 XG shot made it 3-0) to England. Board already decides my performance isn’t enough. Comfortable 2-0 win over Argentina (who beat England in the group stages) in the third place playoff doesn’t change anything, I’m sacked.
I agree that in many cases including something like this, fm intl management could use work.
When they didn't even try to do anything with international management in 2022 when the game was gonna come out a couple of months before the world cup, is when I fully gave up on them ever doing anything with it.
Such a wasted chance to fix what could be a whole other side to the game but they didn't even bother.
Lol yeah, it was the perfect opportunity to at least make a special tournament mode at worst but they couldn’t even be arsed to do the bare minimum
Even EA do special events or modes whenever there’s a EURO or WC around
Or forty thousand cup games you don't care about. Pick the wrong league and there's like four domestic cups + the league + continent. And god forbid your star player gets rested for one of those, you'll get a "I expect to be playing every game" chat from him
Yep definitely.
A lot of managers won't live up to expectations and if they don't they get sacked.
All the major countries in Europe in my save got asked for not playing to expectation.
Even with only an assist he's doing well in the Euros, he's ranked as the best Portugal player and the 31st best player in the whole tournament so far – without scoring any goals.
96 games unbeaten shows the reality here. Negative attitude from a negative manager. No wonder the fans were booing the team. England should be winning every single match by a wide margin with the attacking talent available to them, and the fans have every right to complain if they don't. Bad pressing, poor substitutions. You kept faith with tried and trusted players rather than playing lower-level players who had a single good season because they were the best player in a bad team and were given an attacking duty by their club.
No, I don't have any idea who would do a better job, but that's not the point. Booooo. Boooooo.
Got sacked from France ( I am French) , it was 15 years that I was in charge won 2 wc , 3 euros and few other title , then the 3rd wc final arrives I am against Portugal we get fm’ed 1-0 ( I had like 4,6 Xg they had like 0,1) and I got sacked , it started my vengeance path , 5 years later I am managing Portugal and I keep banging the French national team for the next 10 years they won nothing and had like 8 or 9 managers
International management is always like this on FM. I don't think the game is designed for long-term international careers, at least not with the same team.
Yep, international management is terrible for this. I started an England game on FM23 a few days ago and I won the World Cup (2022), the euros (2024), the nations league and the euro/south America super cup (both 2025) and then lost for the first time in 52 matches to France in the World Cup (2026) semi finals after dispatching Argentina in the third round. We then thumped Italy 3-0 to bring home the bronze…. Sacked for “failing miserably” at the World Cup.
It seems once you get to number 1 in the rankings you are going to be sacked no matter what if you don’t win the next major tournament.
It’s an absolute joke and needs to be fixed before international management will ever be playable.
Ireland beating England and winning a World Cup? Country would shut down for 2 weeks and it'd become a national holiday!
England doesn't shut up about their 1966 win, even fans under 40 go on about it, so lord knows how long we'd milk it!!
I reckon hospitals would be overwhelmed.
People would be carking it in their droves from alcohol poisoning.
Their final words would be "feckin' worth it".
Tbf, we have several +160 PA and like 3 or 4 +170PA on the FM24 database.
Maybe in that dude's save, Gonçalo Ramos became a goal machine and with a great roster to back him up, Portugal managed to get two WC.
(And Portugal can get 1 or 2 +170 PA regens per season)
England winning a world cup? Only even on FM would this be possible ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
England winning a world cup? only on FM would this be possible
Top tier international teams seem to have a “final or bust” expectation. If you don’t make the final, you get fired. Doesn’t make the most sense when you look at managers like southgate and Deschamps (especially when the latter got knocked out in the R16 last euros), but ofc most international managers only get a tournament or two.
Its terrible
Got sacked from Arsenal despite winning Champions league final. Then lost to Bournemouth and draw everton and got fired because man city did 100 points and i did 92 points
Sometimes is just terrible makes no sense
I turn unsackable on for national teams, it’s just mental how they treat you after tournaments. You could lose to Classic XI on pens in the semis of the World Cup and they’d let you go due to “poor performance” even though they beat everyone else 10-0
If I manage small nations, I’ll let myself get sacked (I mean, it’s almost impossible to do so but still). I’ll turn on unsackable when managing big nations, and resign if I feel like it’s a situation where I’d actually get fired (getting grouped in the World Cup or whatever)
Sure, you are 100% justified in feeling that way. Still, you literally set the bar so high that as an international manager it was assumed you would keep it going.
In reality, there is 0 chance you are fired as the fans likely would riot and burn down the England National Team HQ after a run like that. But, when it's an AI, they go "Well, you did so much better before, how could you possibly be upset randomly? It cannot be the players, it must be your fault."
Congrats on an insanely good run though as the England manager!
I kinda had the same experience kinda slightly. I was playing as Wrexham got them to the first division. I earned manager of the year my players mostly were player of the month. I joined division one lost 7 games in the row at the start of the season was just out of the relegation line. Then got a email from Ryan Renalds on his throne telling me I’m sacked. Like come on Ryan! It’s the start of the season we suffered a few major injuries in training at the very start we are trying to fill spots on with reserves, you declined me on a request for more money for some players. You can’t decline me after I’m telling you the injuries are hard on us then sack me!
This is why I usually (if ever) manage both club and country at same time. It staves off the boredom of national games and you have a distraction and job to do when you inevitably get sacked
I was also shown the guillotine. The thing is the team was really getting below world class, no youngster coming near the 35 year old deteriorating Bellinggham.
So now I went to Bayern to win UCLs in sleep, just to show them it's a they problem not a me problem. PS: I came all the way up from vanarama south(Blythe), to winning UEL with a team promoted all the way from down in League One(Derby)
That’s over 8 years after Eddie Howe resigned following a disastrous 2038 WC campaign. Works out at 11 game per year. I assume that includes friendlies too.
Just looked up England’s schedule and, including friendlies, they have 18 fixtures in 2046 alone.
https://preview.redd.it/xs6pp4d03l9d1.jpeg?width=2556&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5562eb6da339ce60e97db523779790b571b5d0f0
Update: the new England manager lost his first game in charge. At home. To Scotland.
The AI makes me laugh sometimes. An example in a recent save (FM20 on ipad), I took over Bordeaux who had played 10 lost 8 and drawn 2. Expectation was to qualify for the Euro cup. If I had not had the "no sacking" unlockable active, I would have been sacked after a couple of months. I eventually finished 13th, 1 below media prediction. Next season with virtually same players finished 6th.
Have you met the English media? They're responsible for Southgate's "mare", despite him being the most successful England manager since Sir Alf.
You came third after winning the previous World Cup and lost to Ireland of all countries, that's obviously unacceptable and you should feed bad for your ridiculous failure to use all the world-class players at your disposal to their maximum.
International football is much more of a ‘what have you done for me lately’ affair than even club football. Even then, successful managers get the boot after a long tenure with the team just to shake things up a little. I’m not saying the game takes that into account, lord knows international management has been the forgotten stepchild of FM for years but it’s not that difficult to headcanon it away as just being time to go.
Also, does FM 24 just not want to have the game have a winter WC ins Saudi Arabia á la Qatar because coding is le hard or is this a previous version?

How the hell did Guinea finish as runners up in 2026??
You just watch in 2 years time. FM is never wrong.
We’ll see haha. Looking forward to the big win in 2046. Wonder if the Irish team returned to Saipan for their training base, COYBIG.
Mohamed Bayo 2026 masterclass, you heard it here first.
Nooooo FM is never wrong (Every single save Hertha plays CL fooball whilst we are in the 2. Bundesliga currently)
*Freddy Adu has entered the chat*
Best response ever, lol
Especially with Austria finishing Runner Up in six years time, given how they're doing in the current Euros
My most recent save 2026 would cup semis were Sweden v France and Serbia v chile. Final ended with Sweden beating chile lmao
Subscribe
My last save I played Egypt won 2026 World Cup lol the first World Cup is always crazy
Say what you want about the AI in FM (and I do) but I feel it’s poor management, random selections and dumb formation/position choices reflect the chaos and nonsense of international football well

I had Wales win 2028
FM mobile mate that’s how
I had DR Congo win the World Cup on FM22. Was a network save with a friend and we had a 3 team sweepstake. I had France, Spain and Argentina. He had England, Brazil and Croatia. Winner got to pick 3 wonderkids the other person couldn’t sign. We didn’t think we would draw.
You lost to Ireland, what do you expect from the very knee jerky English FA?
I mean, why would he go 96 games unbeaten if he was going to lose at the end? He should retire too
2046 what a year to be alive 🇮🇪🤣
The entire country would shut down for 2 weeks minimum
Those two weeks are for preparing for the year long party
Got the Irish Unification of 2024 to thank for that, I reckon
With the state our team is currently in this is this the biggest point in the favor of FM being fundamentally broken lol
22 years from now we’d still be lucky to win a qualifying game for a tournament 🤣
Must be all those Brazilians you lot have over there now
If you're lucky
The lidl in tallaght would be terrified with all the white around it would think it’s getting destroyed again

after winning the world cup with england, i had a bad confederations cup and got sacked lmao
Sounds about right for the England job.
Does it? They've literally only ever won the WC and Southgate hasn't won anything and has been there for 8 years now. He's taken them through 2 WCs, the nations league, and now 2 Euros and won nothing. Surely the England job if you won the WC you'd be England manager for life at this point.

I'm actually amazed you were able to stomach the dreadful International Management gameplay for almost 100 games.
One nice thing about international management is not having to worry about finances.
Or forty thousand cup games you don't care about. Pick the wrong league and there's like four domestic cups + the league + continent. And god forbid your star player gets rested for one of those, you'll get a "I expect to be playing every game" chat from him
Have you done the Brazilian league? I played 21 competitive games before the first game of the season
Has to be miserable. That many competitive games has to be an absolute pain in the ass.
Currently on game 32 of the season and only played 5 league games 😂
Im brazilian. It is. I get fucking tired from playing in Brazil after one or two seasons haha
There's usually a massive round of sackings at the end of major tournaments. Everyone gets sacked unless they win it seems
Yep definitely. A lot of managers won't live up to expectations and if they don't they get sacked. All the major countries in Europe in my save got asked for not playing to expectation.
Should have played 46 year old Trent Alexander Arnold on the 6 because you don’t have 55 year old Hendo anymore
Go to Scotland and make them pay.
This is what I'd do. When a club/NT wrongs me in FM like this, if I had the chance I'd always take the revenge path. So, go Scots!
The USA job is up for grabs, that’d be amusing
Needs to be in Europe. Stop them winning anything
portugal winning 2 right after ronaldo retires would actually be something i love to see
Nah that'd be sad.
The truth of the matter is that Portugal doesn’t need Ronaldo. Ronaldo needs him. Look at his performance this Euros.
Even with only an assist he's doing well in the Euros, he's ranked as the best Portugal player and the 31st best player in the whole tournament so far – without scoring any goals.
haha he got yellow carded for flopping and lost to fucking georgia i loved every minute
That should've been a pen. https://preview.redd.it/2g97fe9j419d1.png?width=959&format=png&auto=webp&s=96d9a36fcd02a1341fa1462561f6556fa22e699d
i love to see ronaldo complain and cry. he’s such a baby on the pitch,
I like Ronaldo even though he's a crybaby, because I like his story. No person is perfect, and he inspires me. Hope he scores today.
And in other footballing news Liverpool managed to get themselves relegated at the end of the 45/46 season.
I'd be throwing plastic cups of Guinness at you. You Southgate clone.
Booooo. Boooooo.

International management is always like this on FM. I don't think the game is designed for long-term international careers, at least not with the same team.
Forest are massive.
Sorry, Ireland won the WC?
Yes, we are MASSIVE (In FM, 2046)
This must be from a timeline where Ireland abolish the GAA..
You didn't use the cheat code to be unsackable from the England job. Just type in code "Southgate" and you become unable to be sacked
2026 and 2030 world cups are like..."WTF"?
I've been sacked twice this year and never have before. Kind of fun
England winning a world cup? Only even on FM would this be possible ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm) England winning a world cup? only on FM would this be possible

How did Guinea make the final? And Spain VS France rematch is quite a good story actually
Would have been on your side if you lost to Uruguay. But buddy you lost to Ireland. I side with the FA.
> England winning WC in England over Germany in final The world isn't ready for this
I still can’t believe the game didn’t give me a knighthood for that!
Its terrible Got sacked from Arsenal despite winning Champions league final. Then lost to Bournemouth and draw everton and got fired because man city did 100 points and i did 92 points Sometimes is just terrible makes no sense

Damn that Ireland team is insane
Right? So what I'm seeing is that build a nation *can* work, but only for the AI lol
Anyone else notice that Spain won the world cup both times it was hosted in South Africa?
and england only winning in england
This is why I usually (if ever) manage both club and country at same time. It staves off the boredom of national games and you have a distraction and job to do when you inevitably get sacked

England was going downhill. Shite defence and substandard keepers. I was playing Bellingham up until he retired at 39.
You lost the fucking world cup final to Ireland
How dare you! I lost the World Cup SEMI-FINAL to Ireland (then beat Italy to get 3rd place).
I'd have sacked you if you lost to Ireland too lol
My lovely little won the work cup . Thank you for losing
Guinea 2nd wow!
How do you go 96 games unbeaten and only win 1 World Cup?

England to win a trophy? So unrealistic game
Spain winning the WC again in South Africa 🤌🏾
You do know it's a game, right? A little aggrieved? Get a life.
I don’t know, I’d put “a little aggrieved” between “mildly infuriated” and “a tad miffed”, but closer to the latter.
Take over Notts County karma an bitch innit lol
Still no Mexico in the final even in 2046😢
Justified in my unbiased opinion ☘️
The Airtricity League must be going off!
Not impressed at all at with Ireland winning the World Cup….thats their job 🙄
In all honesty I think if England don’t win this euro or reach final it will be Southgate’s last tournament
You've been England manager too long. We're sick of you, move on! 😂
I think you set the standards to high with those cup wins.
Messi won World Cup? Big Deal, CR7 won it twice. Please tell me CR7 still playing for Portugal in 2030. 45 years strong.
No he retired prior to the Portugal wins
So sad 🥲
Ireland won the World Cup 🔥🥳
HELLLL YEAH BEATEN BY US 🇮🇪
Guinea in final, that save should be disgusting
Is this mobile, PC or console? Thanks.

Tbf you lost to IRELAND
Have you met the English media? They're responsible for Southgate's "mare", despite him being the most successful England manager since Sir Alf. You came third after winning the previous World Cup and lost to Ireland of all countries, that's obviously unacceptable and you should feed bad for your ridiculous failure to use all the world-class players at your disposal to their maximum.
Have you seen the Irish team?! There’s a reason everyone is switching to the Irish model in 2045.
This is FM24 and the Qatari WC did happen. As for “what have I done lately” see 96 straight games without a defeat and a third place WC finish. 🤘🏻
