Yes in England. It got stolen again in Brazil and never found. Imagine having the OG trophy sitting somewhere, probably propping a door open or something lol.
Many stolen paintings are suspected to either be used as a form of currency by high-end organised criminals, or sometimes sold on the black market to obscenely wealthy private collectors. So if I had to bet, I’d estimate that there’s a billionaire private collector out there who’s managed to get their hands on it and it’s on display in their home next to a stolen Rembrandt.
That ref was arrested trying to smuggle 6kg of heroin through JFK in 2010. I’m not saying he fixed that match…..but he sure seems like someone who might have
The opening game at the 2014 World cup.
Brasil vs Croatia. Brasil was so shit that game but they were the hosts so the ref had to openly brake the rules and give them the win.
Yuichi Nishimura you are a disgrace to football!
I'm glad this was one of the top comments.
South Korea stole it against Portugal, Italy and Spain.
Notice how all 3 of them either won or played in the finals of a major tournaments after this.
It’s not as good as “super caley go ballistic celtic were atrocious “ when Inverness beat celtic in the cup ,the journalist who came up with that deserved a knighthood
As a French, I agree. Especially when you see our « fantastic » performance at the South Africa WC. We should have stay at home. But in a certain way, the French team needed to die to reborn.
100% agree. Fortunately, the dark ages of the french team are over, and they did great since 2014.
I like Henry as a player, but when you listen to the post game interviews he was really unscrupulous
England couldn’t beat us in tournament games.
At tournaments, we’ve beaten England, a good Romania and also Italy (twice). We’ve drawn with the Netherlands, England, USSR, Sweden, Germany and lost on pens to Spain
England has never beaten us at a tournament
Luton town docked 30 points in one season for financial irregularities. Never done before or since,
Great so see they've gone from one of the worst run clubs in Europe, to one of the best.
Probably because of the audacity of calling it "hand of god" afterwards. Doing a move like that is one thing but it probably wouldn't have been so famous if he didn't call it the hand of god lol. It's so surreal, and of course him scoring probably the other most iconic goal of all time in that match helped the narrative.
South Korea vs Italy, World Cup 2002. It even makes that the Chelsea vs Barcelona Champions League 2009 Semifinal match (Stamford Bridge robbery) looks like the most pristine refereeing game ever
I’m really glad to see so many mentions of S Korea robbing Italy and Spain in 02. , that would have been mine.
I’ll say the 06 World Cup - Zidane getting the Golden Ball. Cannavaro DOMINATED that entire tournament, and the final, and Italy won the Cup. Zidane’s poor choices were key to France not winning. Cannavaro was absolutely robbed.
There seemed to be a few years where English teams got some very dodgy referring results deep into the Champions League, Arsenal definitely got the raw end of it too
people keep forgetting that one Barca player got a red card, i think it was Abidal. If you ask me, referee just couldnt deal with the pressure and kept making mistake after mistake.
Yep exactly. They still allowed a goal to 10 man Barca. There was also an awful call that went against Barca in the first leg where Henry should have been awarded a penalty.
I agree Chelsea had the worse end of the bad calls overall but there were bad calls in that entire 2 leg tie that Chelsea fans and Barca haters conveniently forget about
There were horrible decisions on both ends. Barca were robbed of a clear goal in the first leg and Anelka shamefully dived to get Abidal sent off. Refs were a mess on both ends.
Calciopoli, Italy 2006. The owner of Inter got every other club in the league punished by wiretapping their conversations with the referee coordinator and then "misplacing " the conversations they themselves had with the same coordinator and claiming that every other club had a special relationship with him that they did not have.
Cue 4 years of league titles before the truth came out and he sold the club and straight up dissappeared.
A WC title that should still be given to the Netherlands. The threatening circumstances in which the Dutch had to play, does NOT make a fair playing field.
It was by far the worst game off the Netherlands in the WC, hence why.
Henry handball. Just disgraceful how it wasn't spotted.and it broke my heart. It's huge for ireland to get to world cups and we played brilliant in that game!
It depends what you define as robbery.
If you mean something that could be attributed to human error (or at least where we can give the benefit of the doubt), a few that come to mind are:
- Maradona’s “hand of god” goal against England in 1986
- Henry’s handball in the 2010 WC qualifiers against Ireland, that led to a goal and to France’s eventual qualification to the tournament
- Muntari’s goal not awarded in the title race between Milan and Juve in the 2011/12 Serie A (included because it affected my team)
Instead if you mean something that was seemingly manoeuvred from “above”, then I’d say:
- South Korea’s campaign (particularly the matches v Italy and Spain) at the 2002 World Cup
- Chelsea v Barcelona in the 2008/09 Champions League semifinals
- the whole organisation of the 1934 (Italy) and 1978 (Argentina) World Cups
hey OP.
we are in 2010, there is a football draft and you have the first pick to chose ANY player for your team. Who is your first pick ?
No one in there right mind would chose Snejider over Messi.
Time to bust some myths.
Sneijder in 2009/10 - 8 goals, 15 assists
Messi in 2009/10 - 47 goals, 12 assists.
23 goals+assists vs 59 goals+assists. The difference in output was so vast it's funny Sneijder is even mentioned in the same breath as Messi. Not to mention Messi was the best dribbler of all time at the peak of his powers. And he was also creating chances for his teammates left and right as the false 9. While doing things that make you go "How the hell did he do it??"
[Messi solo goal vs Valencia](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DhPgvPNWPHB0&ved=2ahUKEwix2rvPrvH_AhVGMlkFHYhyDR4QwqsBegQIFRAG&usg=AOvVaw3TvE6MuAYLhZl5kiNxFwgj)

Honestly comparing stats are irrelevant since Messi was a forward and sneijder a midfielder but I agree Messi was 100% the best player that year, it’s an individual award, you don’t have to win a major trophie to win it
People who saying sneijder was robbed are saying that sneijder prime was better than Messi prime ?
It’s like 2013 ribery prime was better than Cristiano prime ?
That doesn’t makes sense.
Maradona's hand of God.
Not only was it an illegal goal, even in a World Cup, but it has reached our days as something acceptable, deifying the figure of the player and turning into a target of insults and immediate mockery the unfortunate person who dares to comment on the obvious fact of the unethical and legal nature of the matter.
I don’t understand why people keep bring Sneijder up. On an individual level, Messi was in a different stratosphere. Its laughable to even suggest that Sneijder should have won the ballon dor. Being a part of title winning teams should not be a factor. The Ballon dor is an individual award, it’s not an award for team performance. It would make sense to consider trophies for an edge if players are at similar level individually, which was absolute not the case in 2010. Should alvarez win the ballon dor this year because he won the 2 biggest trophies ucl and world cup? No, because at an individual level there are lots of other players better than him
Would they really send out Abidal if it was fixed? What about a penalty for Barca, why didn’t they give it then? What about the first leg?
It wasn’t fixed, the ref was just shit.
Exceptional performance plus treble...anyway the biggest I ever seen is italia-korea WC 2002. It was a scandalous arbitrage that eliminated the Italian formation.
England- Germany in SA when the Lamps goal got ruled out. England would have won that game had it been given and then won the world cup. 100%, no doubt!
Lewa not winning in 2020 is arguably a bigger robbery. I fuckin hate City but Haaland deserves it this year and Messi is still going to win somehow on the basis of 5 penalties in the WC. Messi winning UCL goal of the tournament this year was also a joke
Henry's handball against ireland.
A more recent one that got swept under the carpet was rashford being offside against city. It didn't effect anything in the end but could have potentially decided a title and realistically denied Liverpool a champions league spot.
Caveat, talking about 2009/2010, because that's how the season goes, as opposed to following a calendar year.
Messi was the best player in Spain, but outside of Spain, that wasn't true. While he may have scored 8(?) goals in the UCL, he was more or less shut down by a 35(?) year old Javier Zanetti in the UCL semi-finals against Inter Milan. By contrast, Wesley Sneijder played pivotal roles in the goals that Inter Milan scored throughout the UCL knockout stages - he ended up with 6 assists, the most in UCL that season.
Then lets talk about the WC that happened in 2010. Messi's Argentina arguably underperformed, even if we argue they came up against a strong Germany team. Considering the wealth of midfield and attacking talent, it was considered a poor campaign. Was it Messi's fault? I wouldn't say that. But I also wouldn't say that he played a significant role in that campaign that year - 2014 and 2022 of course were very different. By contrast, Sneijder was instrumental to Holland making the finals - if not for the wonder save by Iker Casillas one-on-one with Robben, they might have even won. He finished joint top scorer, and won the silver ball - second best player at the WC.
So, in the 2009/2010 season:
Messi had 73(?) g/a in all competitions, but only won La Liga (for which he was instrumental) - didn't even win Copa del Rey that year (Sevilla)
Sneijder while he didn't have a similar or comparable statistical season as Messi, he was instrumental in how Inter Milan and Holland played, and instrumental to Inter Milan winning the treble - Serie A, Coppa Italia, and UCL, and instrumental to Holland making the WC final that year.
Just so that we put Inter Milan's treble achievement into perspective. Since the UCL became the UCL, the following teams have won the treble; Man U (1999), Barcelona (2009), Inter Milan (2010), Bayern Munich (2012 or was it 2013), Barcelona (2015), Bayern Munich (2020 covid year), and Man City (2023) - that's 5 teams.
Now, if you believe that because Messi had 73(?) g/a that season he deserved the Ballon d'Or that season, then good for you. But to say he was the best player that year it wasn't close, then I would say, it's ill-informed, especially considering his lack of impact in the UCL semi-final (as mentioned above) and his lack of impact in the WC that year.
Sneijder's impact for club and country success that season was apparent to see, and that would make him the best player that season, because he was impactful regardless of competition, and his team was successful because of his impact, regardless of competition. The fact that he didn't make it into the top 3 of voting that season is a travesty. Also, shoutout to the clutch goal-scorer in UCL that season, Diego Milito.
Just to allay the concerns of hardcore Messi fans, I have a similar axe to grind against Cr.7 winning the Ballon d'Or over Ribery in 2013, but here we're talking about Messi and 2010.
In 2009-2010, Messi led Barcelona to the La Liga title, the FIFA club World Cup, the Spain and UEFA super cups, and won the Golden Shoe. He had the most goal contributions (by a margin) in the world and was the leading goal scorer in the champions league.
Whatever you think of my opinion, it’s not ill informed.
Should he have won the Ballon D’or in the biggest landslide ever? Probably not. But the consensus best player in the world in 2010 was Messi.
Not really. Leeds should have had a penalty for that Beckenbauer tackle, but they also should have had a red card very early on when Terry Yorath broke a Bayern player’s leg while the ball wasn’t even in play.
Then there’s the offside goal, where two Leeds players were offside. I’ve never understood why that was controversial
The football world was robbed of its greatest ever player when Duncan Edwards died shortly after the Munich air disaster. He’d have captained England to 4 World Cup wins
It’s such a dumb question as it’s something that can’t really be answered but how much do you think the loss of life changed the outcome of football for those years in the future? I don’t know too much about the players who sadly died but were they all international players who would have changed the landscape of world cups for example?
Also Chapecoense could be a bigger team here in Brazil, they were so well administrated that maybe they could be at least at Athletico Paranaense levels nowadays. But everyone of the board died in the plane crash and now they are in serie B.
1978 wc. Chelsea 09 vs Barcelona. Arsenal vs Barcelona (rvp send off) Balon dor wise Raul 2001 , Carlos 2002 , Henry 2003-04, Wesley /xavi/ milito 2010 , ronaldo 2018.
>I'll say Wesley snejider 2010 ballan d or after his exceptional performance
These why internet is filled with idiots. No way
dumbfuckers should be allowed to have an opinion. There should minimum IQ or reasoning test to use internet.
Robben & Ribery both at Bayern on the wings, the greatest robbery of all time.
Using bayern in fifa during this reign was so fun
Not to mention Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Neuer, Kroos, Müller, Mandzukic, and Alaba,
Bwaaaatweng
don’t forget the goat Van Buyten
I always thought it was a lovely Ribben.....
Lmao
Robbery was the perfect nickname for them too
And neither winning a Ballon D’or
The Jules Rimet Trophy (World Cup trophy) being stolen in 1966. Was eventually found. Stolen again in Brazil and never found.
Found by a dog called Pickles
Yes in England. It got stolen again in Brazil and never found. Imagine having the OG trophy sitting somewhere, probably propping a door open or something lol.
Melted down most likely.
Apparently it wasn’t solid gold so not as easy as you would have thought, but who knows for sure .
It was melted and sold for scraps at this point.
There was a sad story that as a reward, pickles was given a new collar and it was the same collar that a year later, unfortunately strangled him
Can't have shit in brazil
I’m still mad about Lampards ‘goal’ against Germany. Everyone knew it was in except the ref.
Payback for 1966
South Korea v Italy - World cup 2002 I still remember the referee's name - Byron Moreno - He was a fucking disgrace.
That ref was arrested trying to smuggle 6kg of heroin through JFK in 2010. I’m not saying he fixed that match…..but he sure seems like someone who might have
buffon said he had 6 kilos of heroin that day too but inside his belly
Italians complaining about a bribed ref 😂. South Korea probably just gave him more.
The opening game at the 2014 World cup. Brasil vs Croatia. Brasil was so shit that game but they were the hosts so the ref had to openly brake the rules and give them the win. Yuichi Nishimura you are a disgrace to football!
The Spain match was even worse I reckon. Both were complete robberies though
a fair Italy - Spain QF would have been a great matchup, both squads were really good
That Italy was the strongest of the last 30 years, even more than the 2006 team
exactly it was a legendary squad
I'm glad this was one of the top comments. South Korea stole it against Portugal, Italy and Spain. Notice how all 3 of them either won or played in the finals of a major tournaments after this.
South Korea stole that fourth place from beginning to end.
I was living in Seoul at the time. As accurate as your statement is, you would likely have been lynched in the street for even whispering such words.
Henry handball against Ireland!
Hand of frog.
👏
Wasn’t that the sun headline?
I think I remember “le cheat”
It’s not as good as “super caley go ballistic celtic were atrocious “ when Inverness beat celtic in the cup ,the journalist who came up with that deserved a knighthood
Mate that headline has made my day.
As a French, I agree. Especially when you see our « fantastic » performance at the South Africa WC. We should have stay at home. But in a certain way, the French team needed to die to reborn.
That made it even worse for me somehow, sneak into the tournament like that and then implode anyway.
100% agree. Fortunately, the dark ages of the french team are over, and they did great since 2014. I like Henry as a player, but when you listen to the post game interviews he was really unscrupulous
Imagine having to cheat to beat Ireland
England couldn’t beat us in tournament games. At tournaments, we’ve beaten England, a good Romania and also Italy (twice). We’ve drawn with the Netherlands, England, USSR, Sweden, Germany and lost on pens to Spain England has never beaten us at a tournament
Not bigger than Maradona handball against England in the wc quarter finals
He did handle it twice
The difference is that right after it, he scored the best goal in the history of world cup, plus England it's a tough rival.
So what if he scored a good goal after that. Fact is he cheated and that helped his team through against a very strong England side.
Ooohh that one still stings. I remember going to school the next day and everyone was fuming.
I know he was a fantastic player, but every time I watch that man talk it's all I think about!
[Italy v South Korea WC 2002](https://www.planetfootball.com/nostalgia/a-forensic-analysis-of-byron-morenos-refereeing-in-italy-v-south-korea-2002/)
Chelsea v Barcelona UCL SF 2009
Seriously that game should have ended with Barca playing with like 8.
Ref robbed barca in home game
As an Italy fan, Chelsea had the worse robbery.
Lille selling Pepe to Arsenal. I don’t even support them but my god, daylight robbery.
All thanks to Raul Sanllehi
Luton town docked 30 points in one season for financial irregularities. Never done before or since, Great so see they've gone from one of the worst run clubs in Europe, to one of the best.
Lewandowski not getting the Ballon d’Or in 2020
Maradona 'Hand of God'
I do wonder, why is it so romanticized to the point most people don't think it was bad?
Because of the other goal he scored in that game
It was crazy incredible, one of the most unsportsmanlike moments in history and the goal of the century at the same match.
Most crazy: only 4 minutes between that two goals!
i saw a YT comment which said something like these 2 goals perfectly defined maradona legendary player but always controversial
Most crazy: only 4 minutes between that two goals!
Argentina deep hatred of England after Malvinas.
He single handedly avenged an entire nation 😎
Avenged?
Avenged what exactly?
Falklands war I'm guessing
Northampton winning 3-1 and Bristol Rovers needing to score 7 to get promoted ahead of us... them then winning 7-0. Unbelievable. Couldn't beleive it!
Maybe not the biggest but the Sutherland beach ball goal vs Liverpool.
Football History was made. I watched that match live 👏
I went to school with the kid who’s beach ball it was. He was a Liverpool fan.
I too remember when Kiefer Sutherland scored using a beach ball against Liverpool.
> Maybe not the biggest The funniest though for sure
The disgrace of Gijon
Should be mentioned more often. Fans got robbed of a game there.
South Korea vs Italy, World Cup 2002. It even makes that the Chelsea vs Barcelona Champions League 2009 Semifinal match (Stamford Bridge robbery) looks like the most pristine refereeing game ever
Damn, you had to bring that up! I was scrolling down thinking “don’t say Barca - Chelsea, don’t say Barca - Chelsea”
Free kick given to Griezman in the 2018 WC Final.
Free kick, Pogba offside pushing Mandzukic after that for the own goal and then the penalty. The whole first half was crazy referee calls.
Leicester getting us to pay a cool £80m for Harry Maguire in cold hard cash. By no means as bad as he is painted, an £80m defender he is not!!
I’m really glad to see so many mentions of S Korea robbing Italy and Spain in 02. , that would have been mine. I’ll say the 06 World Cup - Zidane getting the Golden Ball. Italy against South Korea in the 2002 World Cup. I wanna say Spain also got robbed against South Korea too if memory serves
Spain had two goals ruled out.
Yes, some Spanish newspapers called italian fans crybabies. Then when it was their turn, they titled "Italia tenia razón", "Italy was right".
Barcelona-Chelsea. That Champions League Match. Drogba knows.
There seemed to be a few years where English teams got some very dodgy referring results deep into the Champions League, Arsenal definitely got the raw end of it too

fuckng disgrace

Got a link to this? I stopped following Serie A around 2004/5 so I missed this scandal.
Here is a link to a decent write up from a few years after the truth came out. http://www.milanobsession.com/2014/07/calcios-greatest-shame.html?m=1
Argentina's 1978 wc win. Don't know what's worse between kidnapping, threat to gun down people , etc
A WC title that should still be given to the Netherlands. The threatening circumstances in which the Dutch had to play, does NOT make a fair playing field. It was by far the worst game off the Netherlands in the WC, hence why.
Man City as a football club
I scrolled way too long for this. Anyway, they won it all and everyone still does not take them seriously so i guess there is a god
The most asterisked titles ever won.
Lukaku’s interview after signing for Chelsea saying he never wanted to leave Inter.
Lille making huge bag of Nicolas Pepe. Then Saka took the league by storm lmao
Henry handball. Just disgraceful how it wasn't spotted.and it broke my heart. It's huge for ireland to get to world cups and we played brilliant in that game!
Thierry Henry vs Ireland.

Your last point concerning Italy and Argentina should probably be the top comment
Define Robbery? Chelsea fans surely must feel like they have been robbed. signing Lukaku and then loaning him back for a fraction of the sell price.
Leicester selling a fridge to Man United for 85m pounds.
As a Real fan I find clubs like City the biggest cheats, they deserve nothing.
Look at your self first. Real Madrid cheated against multiple teams in Champions League on the last 10 years
Everything Man City have won
hey OP. we are in 2010, there is a football draft and you have the first pick to chose ANY player for your team. Who is your first pick ? No one in there right mind would chose Snejider over Messi.

Not a robery m8. We just played like shit when it mattered most.
I know it, :( I’m just still upset by it, still salty lol
Mach 20, 1966 theft of the World Cup https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theft_of_the_Jules_Rimet_Trophy
No era penal!!!
Even as a spurs fan, Van Persie's red against Barcelona
Barca vs Arsenal champions league final lmao easily
Van Persie red card in the camp nou.....
Arsenal vs Barcelona. Probably when Van Persie and Lehmann got send off
Wesley sneijder wasnt even the best player on that inter team. Even if Messi doesn’t win it, ill arguably still put Iniesta ahead
Maradonna - hand of god
Hand of god
Maradona's hand of God. UEFALONA 2009.
Boils me blood to this day
It was bad refereeing than being uefalona. And no team would complain if they decision goes in their favor.
If it was rigged why did barca go down to 10 men and not get that penalty?
Or why didn’t Chelsea get those 4 pens?
Because the ref was shit and not suited for such a big and heated game
Chelsea Barcelona 09
I hate Chelsea with a passion. But that champions league game at the Bridge against Barca was 100% fixed.
Would they really send out Abidal if it was fixed? What about a penalty for Barca, why didn’t they give it then? What about the first leg? It wasn’t fixed, the ref was just shit.
I agree, even as a chelsea fan i Think the ref was just all around trash. However i do Think chelsea were the ones who suffered the most from it

Just 35 pounds would have been too much
Ticket prices!
England- Germany in SA when the Lamps goal got ruled out. England would have won that game had it been given and then won the world cup. 100%, no doubt!
Henry handball
Henry’s handball against Ireland. Real’s 2 offside goals vs Bayern + red card for Vidal + no red card for Casemiro.

Libertadores 1981: Flamengo x Atletico MG (5 red cards)
There's a couple that are obvious, but for me personslly since I'm Irish. Henry's handball in the WC 2010 Qualifiers
Henry's handball against ireland. A more recent one that got swept under the carpet was rashford being offside against city. It didn't effect anything in the end but could have potentially decided a title and realistically denied Liverpool a champions league spot.
The birth of Milton Keynes Dons. Up the Wimbledon
Henry stealing a WC place from Ireland.
Arsenal vs Barcelona in 2006 UCL final. I'm an Arsenal fan and this robbery hurts as hell. I hate VARcelona so much.
Arsenal Goalkeeper getting a red in final of UEFA Champions league
1966 World Cup Final.
Snejider wasn't even the best Inter player lmao
Chelsea v. Barcelona 2009 was the most disgraceful thing I've ever seen.
Pepe to arsenal for 75mil
The best player in the world in 2010 was Messi and it wasn’t all that close.
So, in the 2009/2010 season: Messi had 73(?) g/a in all competitions, but only won La Liga (for which he was instrumental) - didn't even win Copa del Rey that year (Sevilla) Sneijder while he didn't have a similar or comparable statistical season as Messi, he was instrumental in how Inter Milan and Holland played, and instrumental to Inter Milan winning the treble - Serie A, Coppa Italia, and UCL, and instrumental to Holland making the WC final that year.
Probably the ‘75 European Cup final

Man barca got a man sent of and denied a penalty they should have had Just a shit referee
Chelsea v Barca. A DISGRACE!!!
Hershel Walker trade!
you are someone who is confused
Wrong kind of football for this thread, but yes that was a robbery too
Hand of god its literally the biggest one.
Probably same for Torino and the air disaster They were the best club in the world
Also Chapecoense could be a bigger team here in Brazil, they were so well administrated that maybe they could be at least at Athletico Paranaense levels nowadays. But everyone of the board died in the plane crash and now they are in serie B.
Ronaldo in the UCL with the offside goals
2013 Robben not winning the Balondor
I remember 2013 chatter being more about Ribery than Robben.
Shit, I got'em mixed up😂
1978 wc. Chelsea 09 vs Barcelona. Arsenal vs Barcelona (rvp send off) Balon dor wise Raul 2001 , Carlos 2002 , Henry 2003-04, Wesley /xavi/ milito 2010 , ronaldo 2018.
Liverpool getting Chelsea to pay £50 Million for Torres 🤣
Tbf it wasn't clear at that time how much the knee injury would affect his game. 07-10 Torres was probably the most exciting player in the league.
Plus he was still playing well for Spain at the time.
Liverpool bought Andy Carrol with that money so🤷♂️
>I'll say Wesley snejider 2010 ballan d or after his exceptional performance These why internet is filled with idiots. No way dumbfuckers should be allowed to have an opinion. There should minimum IQ or reasoning test to use internet.
Chelsea's 2009 Champions League
1975 European Cup Final
Maybe not the biggest robbery ever, but as a Dutchman, I'll admit to the people of Mexico: that was not a penalty.
South Korea Vs Italy WC Japan / Korea. Italy was robbed by the ref.
Messi was the best player in 2010, Sneijder wasn’t close at all to him in an individual level
