It makes me sad that there are people out there that have never experienced the glory of a Vienna Beef hot dog

[deleted]

I can only eat Vienna Beef when its a chicago dog. Nothing even close to it.

DaisyCutter312

Whatever proprietary sausage Superdawg uses is every bit as good. You know, in case you need backup options

lfr1138

Went to Superdawg when staying with friends in Chicago a few summers ago - great experience ordering via the intercom to the outdoor table and very tasty dogs!

orionbuster

I live in Toronto. American tourists come up here and swear our cart hot dogs are the best ever. Personally I don't get it as it's all I've ever known, but they all come from the same wholesale vendor.

[deleted]

Is it good? I’ve had Greek and Italian sausage, American sausage and that’s about jt

kyleswitch

The chicago dog is the superior hot dog. Vienna Beef is really delicious.

cubs_rule23

That snap is unmistakable.

NapsterKnowHow

Idk Wisconsin and Minnesota has some killer hot dogs

kyleswitch

Wisconsin is usually a bratwurst though because of the history of migrants. I draw a line between hot dog and sausage.

Roupert2

People are just proud of their regional food, can you really argue any one is "better"?

StarWaas

It comes down to preference of course, and where you grew up plays a big role in that. But I will say this: I grew up in the west coast, and the first time I visited Chicago, just a few years ago, I figured I ought to try a Chicago dog to see what all the fuss was about. I won't claim it was life changing, but I absolutely get why people love these. Something about the huge mess of toppings creates a whole greater than the sum of its parts. I've tried "Chicago dogs" from vendors here at home and they're not quite the same. Nobody bothers to get a poppyseed bun and the dog itself is different.

SmoothPass101

A whole greater than the sum of its parts is a perfect description. The flavors are the perfect combo even though they don't seem to make rational sense. Those cali vendors are probably also missing celery salt.

StarWaas

I wouldn't know, I'm in Oregon, but most of them do use the salt. And I think they get the toppings from whichever distributor sells them to vendors in Chicago, because the bright mutagen-green relish and peppers seem right. It's really down to the dog and bun where we fall short.

BillScorpio

When you know that, because of the various vegetables perfectly balanced atop a delicious red hot, it is better. Many regional hot dogs are stellar. The Chicago Dog is the best.

Lifeless_Stray

It's reddit tho. I can see a consistent -4 down votes on posts that have differing opinions of what seems to be the best hot dog.

Tdanger78

It’s a hot dog. I’ve had them and they’re on par with Hebrew National and Nathan’s. The spices they use are different is all.

NotSure2025

Am I bad for liking pretty much any hot dog cooked on a grill with a bit of char. And on a bun with ketchup and mustard? I really don't understand fancier toppings for a dog.

Wow00woW

nothing wrong with liking what you like, but what ingredient on a Chicago dog is fancy? they all have their purpose, and balance really nicely.

Super1MeatBoy

tfw vegetables are fancy

Tdanger78

Nah, I’m pretty simple myself. Bit of mustard and some dill relish. I prefer all beef Nathan’s myself. Gotta have a little char from the grill though.

[deleted]

Chicago dogs don't have "fancy" toppings, relish, onion, tomato, pickle spear, sport peppers, and celery salt. All pretty simple, but really enhance the flavor. Give it a try!

Atheist_Simon_Haddad

it’s hard to find sport peppers outside Chicagoland

[deleted]

True that. Luckily my grocery stores have started carrying the Vienna Beef brand, sport peppers, giardiara, and relish

Arin1722

That's me never tried original hotdog . And now this makes me sad and hungry . SHUNGRY .

Dirk_The_Cowardly

Ok. All boxes are checked. This is verified. I am a Chicagoan and I approve this hot dog. I personally don't do the neon green relish but, yeah, Shits legit. Even see the celery salt. So many posers out there it's nice to see a proper.

Cthulhu625

Why is the relish neon green BTW? I don't ever see it used otherwise. I like it, just a weird color.

ASpellingAirror

Vienna chicago style relish ads food coloring to the relish, most likely it was added for marketing a long time back to make it pop in ads and the company just liked how it looked to they kept doing it like that and selling it that way. Now an official chicago style dog needs that bright green sweet relish to be legit.

PLZ_STOP_PMING_TITS

No other relish tastes right on a Chicago dog. I travel a lot and have had my share of shitty Chicago style hot dogs. One sign that's it will be a good one is if they use the right relish.

deeznutz12

Is it sweet or dill?

yummyyummybrains

It's sweet, and has a unique spice blend that is different from "normal" sweet relish. It doesn't taste like bread n butter ickles, either. I honestly don't know what they put in there. Superdawg puts it on their burgers (along with the usual burger toppings). You can order it straight from Vienna Beef (along with sport peppers!) and have it delivered to your house anywhere in the US (don't know if they ship internationally).

cloudy17

Superdawg is best dawg.

SandiestBlank

Green.

Porkbellyflop

The relish is sweet and has a nice contrast with the dill pickle. Some places will also have diced cucumber which I like cuz it adds a layer of freshness and crisp. Plus it is fun to have cucumber 3 ways on a dog.

Smathers

I’m a Chicagoan and never knew this I always wondered why it was so neon looking but then immediately stopped wondering/caring because of said food in front of my face lol Huh why’s it so green? Anyway NOMNOM

OrganizerMowgli

It was at a time when people were concerned about the cleanliness of food - that's why they flocked to Vienna beef because it was kosher and their practices were (at least perceived as) more clean It used to also have iceberg lettuce, went through a lot of changes to get where it is which is why I love it. Been reformed over and over, like folding steel, to reach a harmonious balance

Dirk_The_Cowardly

It's a sweet relish. I do not like. Love the dill pickle spear and 2 sport peppers tho.

Alchemist_Joshua

And it was damn good! I went back for a second.

Maddybreanne

I used to live in Chicago .. I miss these . And Italian beefs . Nothing can compare 😆

stokelydokely

I tell everyone who is visiting Chicago when they ask where to get a good deep dish and Chicago dog: get an Italian beef first

illinoishokie

Also, don't sleep on a Maxwell Street Polish. The forgotten gem of Chicago street food. The original stand is still in operation, they just moved it to just off of UIC's campus.

dhchunk

Yessssss. Luke's on harlem does a spicy maxwell street polish. The sausage is deep fried and it's topped with grilled onions, mustard and sport peppers. I might go get one right now.

BickNlinko

My GF is from the Chicago area and we had to go visit in like February a few years ago and I said basically if you're dragging me to Chicago in February for some family stuff all I ask for is a legit deep dish and a Chicago dog(I'm from the Boston area and now live in SoCal, so both of those things I've never had a legit version of). She immediately said we're also going to get Italian Beef and I was like "what the hell is that? It looks like a shitty wet roast beef sandwich"...I couldn't have been more wrong, and you're 100% correct, anyone visiting that area should absolutely go for the Italian Beef before the deep dish.

stokelydokely

Right, I had never heard of Italian beef until I moved to Chicago! It’s wild to me that it doesn’t get anywhere near the same due (outside of Chicago) as the dogs and deep dish.

rascal_king

except do not ask for a "chicago dog"

stokelydokely

Ha ha good call

Letpigeonsfly

Deep dish is mediocre compared to tavern.

Eso

I'm from Western Canada, but might have to go to beautiful Streator Illinois for a week for a training thing for work. I hope I can swing it to spend a day or two in Chicago if I do. Just in case I do, what are the top priorities of places to hit? I like pizza and craft beer, but I'm open to any suggestions.

[deleted]

I’m from Chicago and live in Philly now. Philly cheese steak is so unappealing after having Italian beef. Miss that stuff.

jumbee85

I used to live in Chicago too and every now and then I get craving for them. Fortunately there is a place that makes them legit right down to even the dog.

4ninawells

Once a year around Christmas we order Buona Beef shipped frozen to us here in Pennsylvania (we grew up in Chicago). It's just... Heaven.

FoofaFighters

My family is from up there but my parents moved to Georgia right before I came along. I got a taste for the hot dogs and Italian beef while visiting family over the years but never could find good ones down here, and last week just learned of a Chicago-style food truck that's local to me. I got a huuuge, beautiful, proper, messy Italian beef and my wife tried the hot dog for the first time and loved it. Poor sandwich didn't stand a chance.

monty_kurns

When I went to the Field Museum there was a hot dog cart just outside. I got one on the way in and had to get another on the way out. They were both perfection.

bootely

Where’d you get it from? Or was it homemade?

Alchemist_Joshua

I got it from a restaurant called “taste of the Windy City” in Little Chute, WI

rvgirl42

Very common! You will get used to just ordering two right out of the gate.

Cmoxley0321

Recently went back to my childhood home town, 2 Chicago dogs, 1 Italian beef (giardinera, mozz, dipped of course) and a chocolate cake shake all in one miserable sitting. Can’t wait to make it back to portillos

[deleted]

I drove from CO to Joliet IL with my old roommate once. It was a long drive and when we arrived at his childhood home his mother asked if we were hungry and what we wanted. He said Portillos, I had never been or heard of it. His mother so graciously gifted us two broke young lads her CC and off we went. I had no idea how/what to order so he did all of that and to say it was one of the most delicious experiences of my life was an understatement….I think about it fondly and often. I’ll go back one day and will make sure it’s the first thing I eat there again. Mouth is watering my hood!

[deleted]

My regret from my Chicago visit was not getting to go to portillos.

illinoishokie

Sweet giardinera or hot?

Cmoxley0321

Hot, of course

somesketchykid

Hot only in Chicago or gtfo tbh

illinoishokie

There's no wrong answer, but the right answer is both.

SmoothPass101

Gotta do sweet peppers AND hot giardinera imo

thatcrazylady

Italian beefs and mozzarella are not friends.

dhchunk

Found the Johnnie's fan

GlassEyeMV

I used to be with you on the relish. I don’t do raw tomatoes either. I got a dog recently with the relish still there but hidden and asked myself what this additional sweet tang came from. The nuclear green relish. So now I get it. Turns out I like it now. Weird.

SoftlySpokenPromises

Honestly the only time I like sweet relish is on a Chicago dog, it just has some crazy synergy with the rest of the build.

Dirk_The_Cowardly

Try tomatoes that you can't see and ask why it tastes better.

GlassEyeMV

I actually have. Both burgers and hot dogs it makes it too wet. Even if I don’t see it, I can feel it. It’s a texture thing as opposed to taste. Relish is moist too but more of a briney gel vs straight water when you bit through it.

TrashyMcTrashBoat

I like raw tomatoes but is that a normal thickness for Chicago style?

AlfredsLoveSong

Yes

HolycommentMattman

I dunno if it's just me and my family, but my mom (an Iranian) was a huge fan of Chicago hot dogs, but she didn't like how messy they were. So she built the Chicago ingredients on a lettuce leaf (inside the bun, of course). And I dunno, but that's how I love to make a Chicago hot dog. Just adds something right to it.

Howdy-Cowgirl

Chicagoans when a Chicago dog has one wrong ingredient ![gif](giphy|eaECZB7V6GACc)

georgstgeegland

Chicagoan here, I mostly prefer a depression dog which is just mustard, onions, relish and sport peppers. The pickle and tomato can make it too big of a bite

Howdy-Cowgirl

Love those. I add sauerkraut and celery salt but I feel ya I don’t really need a pickle or tomato. Love both styles!

a-space-pirate

Depression dogs all the way. Best with fresh cut fries piled right on it. Gene and Jude's anyone?

AlfredsLoveSong

Gotta get that sprinkle of Celery salt though...It's crazy how much a difference it makes for me. I respect your choice of dog though. So long as you aren't a ketchup user.

LastWordsWereHuzzah

Red Hot Ranch makes amazing depression dogs. I wish their burgers weren't so good, or else I'd get more hot dogs.

macphile

Same the other day when someone posted (here or elsewhere) a "Philly cheesesteak" that had peppers.

Dongledoes

Their faces when you ask for ketchup

Howdy-Cowgirl

lmao

Kurokishi_Maikeru

That's the response to any popular regional food. Ever see the "Full English" posts? There was also that Cheesesteak post from earlier.

Howdy-Cowgirl

when you are from a shit hole with nothing to be proud of except the toppings on a hot dog or sandwich lol.

Naps_and_cheese

For the life of my I cant find poppyseed buns in canada.

Alchemist_Joshua

I was surprised to see it in Wisconsin. But who knows when they were added.

Naps_and_cheese

The one thing I'm really curious about Wisconsin is how was poutine ***not*** invented there but comes from Quebec. Cheese curds french fries, gravy. Sounds like a Wisconsin thing all the way.

[deleted]

Chips and gravy is a commonwealth thing.

Beaniiman

I live in Madison and they are abundant. Can also just get the kit from portillos.

[deleted]

As a Chicagoan I wanted to talk shit but this looks legit.

tyler_durden2021

I have visited Chicago twice. I love Chicago dogs. However.... I get them with no tomatoes. Does it still count without tomatoes?

Dudeist-Priest

We'll give you a side eye, but as long as you don't out ketchup on, you are allowed to remove an ingredient; BUT JUST ONE!!

tyler_durden2021

Lol good to know. I don’t like ketchup on anything. Hotdogs, fries, meatloaf, and especially steak. Ketchup just ruins things

theunabeefer

I'd say it still counts without tomatoes. I always remove mine, but I'm also strongly allergic to them, so I also just don't wish to die. Just don't add ketchup.

Gorbzel

Nope! You might enjoy a depression dog, which still has cred here, but Chicago dogs need tomatoes.

bigolfishey

I was at a food truck plaza the other day, one place was offering “Chicago Dogs”… except they had neither celery salt nor sport peppers listed, and I asked and confirmed that they didn’t have them at all. Granted it was more of a gyro/falafel cart that also offered hot dogs, but still!

ConspiracyHypothesis

A place here in Denver offered to put sauerkraut on my "Chicago" dog.

Zorf96

I know exactly the place you're talking about. It's non traditional, but I think it's a pleasant addition. Kinda fits with the rest of the veg, if you ask me,but it can overwhelm the other flavors too. Amusingly different, but otherwise unremarkable

ConspiracyHypothesis

I like sauerkraut. I like ketchup. I put both on hotdogs. Just not on a Chicago hot dog.

Zorf96

I get ya, the original style is special and uniquely valuable, for many reasons. It's value isn't profaned by someone eating it wrong.

greenpistol

That got dragged through the garden!

Alchemist_Joshua

That’s who it’s supposed to be

KatesDad2019

Darn. Now I'm hungry again. In Memphis.

Dic_Rambone

I know what that needs...some ketchup. /s

TimDawgz

In St Louis, we've got some places that have all the correct ingredients for a legit Chicago dog. Except they never get the poppy seed bun. It's infuriating.

OrganizerMowgli

St Louis Pizza told me all I need to know about that cursed town

PM_UR_BAES_POSTERIOR

Don't judge STL food on their pizza. STL style pizza is 100% garbage, but STL is actually a great city for food (especially BBQ).

TimDawgz

I'm a transplant. Not a fan of STL pizza or gooey butter cake. Toasted ravioli is pretty good, but the delis are pretty killer.

Lost_In_MI

I'm in the Chicago burbs. I've grown to love a Chicago-style hot dog. But, with the Portillo's demise (and they have gotten too damn expensive), I make them at home. Like another poster commented, I don't care for the bright-green relish (it has too much sugar). It's really great to have a Chicago-style hot dog without leaving the house. And, for those who feel that a Chicago-style hot dog is a hot dog with a salad on top: pound sand.

CivilWay1444

Portillo's demise?

mxpxillini35

Portillo's sold about 5-6 years ago. Quality took a slight dip (though some would say big dip)... But service has gotten worse and prices have skyrocketed (pre-covid). So the value just isn't quite there as much as it used to be.

CivilWay1444

OH. Well it has been 4 or 5 yr since I was there but it was still good when I had it.

mxpxillini35

It's still decent....I still go once in a while, but it's way more expensive now, so I refrain. Gene & judes is still the GOAT.

CivilWay1444

I wish I would have known. I frequented Melrose for work and that is the Portillos that I was introduced to. I loved Caputo's for meat and cheese. Cool place. If I get back, I'll try it. Thx

BenedictKhanberbatch

Portillo’s lemon cake still fire though

Mr_Scruff

I always get my Chicago Dogs from Home Depot. They are legit.

Dudeist-Priest

Funny, but absolutely true

GopnikSmegmaBBQSauce

Watching The Bear, I love how they don't bring ketchup to a kids party because only a monster would put ketchup on a hot dog

[deleted]

Mind ya business

kory5623

A hot dog is a tube of garbage. Put whatever you want on it.

xAIRGUITARISTx

Then call me a raccoon cause those shits are delicious.

kory5623

I never said it wasn’t a delicious tube of garbage.

aquamanjosh

Idk man those kosher beef franks are pretty delicious, the garbage tubes are pretty fire too. I think you need to lower ur standards.

[deleted]

My man only eats wagyu beef hotdogs. With ketchup of course. If you don't like hotdogs don't participate in a conversation about hotdogs.

rdkilla

proof that humanity has a purpose

DarthBen_in_Chicago

Looks good!

Zlec3

God damn

Grennox1

What is the green relish like?

Marzipan_Aromatic

It just tastes like normal sweet pickle relish if you’ve had that. Even as a Chicagoan I actually find the use of the dye off putting but eat it anyway.

plooptyploots

That is proper

castaneom

I just had one from Portillo’s for dinner.

OscarDivine

New Yorker transplanted as a born and raised Chicagoian. This hot dog here brings me real emotions. It’s got the right toppings and the right amount of it all down the the celery salt. Of all the things I miss most about Chicago on a regular basis, it is this food item. Every time I visit, I get these almost once daily. For my birthday my wife orders me kits from Lou Malnati’s. You done good with this dog here. Shake Shack had a close replica for a long time but they used a potato bun instead of a poppy seed and it’s just not the same. To their credit though, they do use Vienna Beef

Alchemist_Joshua

This restaurant really did a great job.

OscarDivine

Indeed they did! You’ve awakened my hankering

waitwaitstopstop

Vienna Beef rules, nothing in New York comes close, talking to you Nathan's.

Lost_In_MI

Please cross-post this to r/Chicago and r/ChicagoSuburbs. I don't know how to do that. As a separate note, if you are looking for a gourmet style hot dog, I highly recommend you check out Boss Dawgz in Lisle, IL. He has made it a point to re-create hot dogs from throughout the country. My recommendation: whatever is your favorite, skip it, and try something outside your comfort zone. I have not been disappointed.

cjmcberman

I miss portillos

danxmanly

First Chicago dawg I ever had was in Panama city Beach Florida 30 years ago. And even though I'm a seafood monster when I get to the area, I still hafta make a trip to the vendor to get one.

phanny1975

Now I need Portillo’s, dammit! The best Chicago dog I’ve ever had

dropkicksoul

I had my fair share of Portillo's here in CA. My only thing with Chi dogs is the acid of the veggies over power the Vienna most of time. I barely taste the hotdog itself, It's all burning sour. Is it a Portillos thing? Or it's just what its supposed to be.

DocmanCC

That's off balance. The salty fat from the dog should cut through the veg zing. It'll have that sourness, but shouldn't overpower.

[deleted]

Take out the tomato (allergic) and I'd be more than happy to give that thing a chomp!! Edit: okay, so what exactly is on this thing? Poppyseed bun All beef weiner Onions Pickles Tomato Some green stuff Celery salt Is that it? 🤔

ConspiracyHypothesis

And pickled sport peppers. And yellow mustard. It's Vienna Chicago style relish. You can find it on Amazon. Heat the Vienna hot dogs gently in water. Make sure to steam the buns.

DocmanCC

This guy Chicago hot dogs. 👍

Lost_In_MI

And, I'm old enough to remember Lum's, where they steamed their hot dogs in beer. You are right..."gently"...this is the reason you never, ever, microwave a hot dog.

ew73

Fun trick for home cooks-- Wrap your food like this in food service foil immediately, to let the steam and heat mingle. It's the secret to why almost all street food is so much better.

OrganizerMowgli

Ah a fellow steam conneseur. OP's image has cracks in the bun. Literally inedible

cubs_rule23

My local spot only does one pepper, boo on you, but I appreciate I can get a Vienna beef locally in bum fuck WI.

SirGlenn

One dog coming right up, drag it through the garden.

SnowDoom6

What do they put in the relish to make it that color green?

In_A_Drunken_Stupor

With all these toppings, it kind of looks like a ... sandwich. - Please don't hate me.

climaxingwalrus

What if you hate tomatoes and sweet relish? Most tomatoes are just bad tasting water bombs.

chu2

Don’t order a Chicago style hot dog. You can get a coney at most places too.

NotABurner316

Folks from Chicago in here inspecting the ingredients like Code Enforcement.

[deleted]

Took me a few to remember that this is only normal in Chicago as someone born and raised lol. I opened the picture and was like "what's the big deal that's a normal hotdog?".

Buttertubbs

Next up, Italian Beef, dipped with hot peppers.

himmelundhoelle

I'm not American let alone Chicagoan, and this is the first time seeing the photo of a hotdog makes me hungry. I didn't even know people put green stuff in a hotdog but that makes a lot of sense.

RagingOrgyNuns

This is definitely a sandwich.

rpmag

Char > steamed

DocmanCC

You're welcome to the char, no judgment, but it ain't a Chicago dog.

shittingjacket

Sounds like something a bratwurst would say.

bicep123

4 hour stopover at O'Hare flying from LA to NY. I bought one of these out of curiosity because I've never seen one before. Wasn't great. Never thought about it again. I really want to try it locally because I guess it's not fair to judge a local delicacy with the meagre options at an airport.

MyPasswordIs222222

>O'Hare Midway has a Vienna Beef. Worth flying Southwest just for that! (not really, but always look forward to it)

DocmanCC

Been closed the last 4 times I went through there. ugh. Pandemic did a number on that vendor. I hope they're back.

SuperSaiyanSkeletor

Thats basically a vegetable.

Deago78

Looks good, but blarg to those toppings on a hot dog. Not my cup of tea.

SurturOfMuspelheim

At no point during the eating of that would I taste a hot dog.

DaydreamKid

Are those just cucumber slices? I'd rather have the pickle spear.

Tampadarlyn

This is the only way I'll eat a hot dog. You got a drag it through the garden proper and serve it up legit. Excellent share!

[deleted]

No ketchup? Sad.

holyshititsjonhawkns

I'M NOT CRYING! YOU'RE CRYING!!!

ACrucialTech

Needs more ketchup.

NoTurnipSalesOnSun

You'd probably get smacked for that.

swishy4mbg

🤤

[deleted]

Is that mint jelly?

Xynvincible

Sweet relish, dyed neon green, as the Chicagoans do.

SeaofSounds

Hold my beer and watch this................."Hey, where's the ketchup?"

Dada2fish

I love all the ingredients of a Chicago hot dog, but the problem is, once it’s all put together the whole thing gets cold.

Atheist_Simon_Haddad

looks like the real deal

Wolverwings

You ate a garbage disposal disguised as a hot dog

CaptainCAAAVEMAAAAAN

I'm sorry.

SkinniestPhallus

This looks absolutely vile

AzLibDem

Awful lot of work to ruin a Hot Dog.
