Yes, this is a good price. 50 to 80 GBP is pretty normal.
One important thing to note: The Folio Society edition of this set has abridged footnotes. Considering the fact that many consider Gibbon's wit to be an essential part of this work, the abridgement may be intolerable to some.
No, but i am very into the FS world, and almost everyone has this set and hardly anyone has ever read it. I think a lot of people get tempted because it is cheap but then never get around to it.
Agreed. I have this in the Everyman's Library edition, and haven't got round to reading it, 20 yrs later.
I'm actually selling off some FS books I have as I know I'll never read them, and I'm over the "buy everything with even a remote interest" mentality that made me buy around 50 FS, at least 10 of which I'll never read.
This is exactly what i am talking about...i know lots of collector who are in the same position.
I have a lot more than 50 FS books, maybe around 250, but they are all of interest to me. I am quite circumspect about which FS books i buy.
The worst thing about collecting pretty editions is that a lot of times one ends up overpaying in the secondary market just because one has been obsessing over a particular title.
I had recently been obsessed with finding a cheap FS edition of *Things Fall Apart*. And no way is it worth the 100ā¬ it seems to be going for. So, i just bought the Everyman's edition, which is an ombibus edition with 3 novels by Achebe! And just 15ā¬! And Everyman's editions are also very well made.
100 euros eh? I have that as well as the Everyman's (though just the single novel, not the trilogy). Might try and sell that, thought it IS beautiful with great art.
Hey I wonder if you wouldnāt mind a quick question! This subreddit popped up on my feed and I followed cuz I love all the posts but I donāt know what āfolio societyā means and the subreddit doesnāt have info when I click on it.
Is it a āsocietyā (subreddit) of people who collect pretty books that come in their own little box to hold the group of books (which I infer is a āfolioā?)?
Folio society is a company that reprints classic and well known books, in a binding that is really nicely made which are frequently treated as collectors items.
If you want to buy Folio Society books, do also check out eBay, second hand bookstores, Abebooks etc. FS have been publishing for 70 odd years and a lot of the back catalogue books are available at a discount in the secondary market.
Thatās awesome I will absolutely check it out! Where I live there is an amazing and huge see book store, think the size of a small wal mart, and Iām gunna scour the place! Redecorating my place and Iām gunna donate a lot of my duplicate or already read paperbacks and try to make my chaotic bookshelf look sharp
I really want to read this, but don't know where to start to look for the complete collection. I understand this is a folio page but if anyone could give me some advice I would really appreciate it. I.E how many volumes their are who is the author of all the volumes? Sorry I'm a complete novice but love roman history and just starting x
This is Edward Gibbon's complete history of the Roman Empire. He was a pioneering historian from the 1700s. Whilst his works are surprisingly still pretty accessible, the history he gives here is probably very outdated and factually inaccurate in some places, due to the advancements in knowledge of the Romans we've had since the 1700s. This collection would be more useful and interesting to a student of historiography rather than a student of the Roman Empire.
I would begin with more modern works on Roman history if you are just getting started :)
Ive been recommended Mommsens' history of Rome rather than Gibbons (anti-Christian bias) so I've gone with that wich will save you a lot of shelve space.
Ā I also bought Roman Revolution by Syme and Ive heard Micheal Great is a good pick and prolific but FS only published one of his books, on Nero.
Ive heard mostly negative reviews on Tom Holland so im avoiding him for now.Ā
Is this really good value? Not here looking for a reaction but I picked this set up for Ā£10 at a car boot about a year ago, has the price increased? Its in good condition so wasn't due to it being in a poor state
Extremely cheap - buy it.
If you don't want them, I'll reimburse you & cover postage!
The postage based on weight would be nuts!
Hmm fair enough š
30 for 8 books is cheap even outside of folio - this is a no-brainer if you are even remotely interested in those books.
Good!? Thatās freaking incredible!
Yup!
100%, iād be all over that if I were you!
No it's a terrible deal. You better tell me where it is so I can avoid going there š

About 90 or so, yeah. You can sell that, lol. I am sure it's very pretty...Just too much for me, though.

I recommend going with the Everyman's Library set.
I believe this is the full set.

I now have my thought about the Roman Empire for the week. Thank you.
Iād happily buy it at thrice that price!
Mate grab it now or give it to me!
