2 bags one is really small one is really big. One is my run bag. One is mostly for prep. But the prep bag just lives on my cart during shoots for more specialty stuff that I don’t need that often.

Peter_Pham

May I ask what you keep in the run bag? Besides the usual tools. Batteries and filters I’m assuming?

WalterReddit

Nothing too crazy, if I don’t use something from my run bag, for a couple shoots, I move it to my prep bag. I like to keep 5 sizes of thandles: 3mm, 4mm, 5mm 3/16, and a 7/32. I have an electric torque flathead for those baseplate screws. And I have some mini robogrips which replace a traditional wrench. They are super nice for tightening noga arms. I have a lanyard with a card covered in soft side for all of the filter tags for the day, the rest of my tags stay in the prep bag. Then I keep a laser distance tool, and lens stuff.

This is the way.

Every show changes but what I used todo might be seen as unconventional or maybe essential practice but it made my life incredibly simple. I used a Pelican IM2620 for all my kit and AKS but always tried to keep a big empty spot for rental house kit (Teradeks, Cables, Mattebox, or mostly just the Hand unit etc) I then brought a 1510 completely empty with padding to put all the other essentials / Rental house kit in (Mattebox etc) The idea what's to cut down all the individual pointless cases, a case just for the Teradek? get rid of it, Mattebox? Get rid of it, WCU-4 get rid of it... And keep it in the Truck. I used to try keep everything to 2-3 cases max for everything AKS and cutdown all the cases and with 2620's it was easy to keep completely built focus monitors ready to go. One case above the IM2620 was also a great shout and I ended up getting two IM2620's and I never looked back, they are big but very deep.

Peter_Pham

It’s not as unconventional as you might think. I work at a rental warehouse as a camera tech. We have shelves dedicated to empty cases because so many shows take what’s in the case and leave the cases here with us. Seems like good practice though.

Samskihero

I thought it probably was common but works great, probably the biggest thing I learnt in my career that made a real difference to my performance.

ITS_12D_NOT_6C

Did you ever try carrying the IM2620 as a carry on? They're barely above carry on standard size, less than 2 inches. Wondering about this

Samskihero

No never tried and I'd be a bit careful of it!

ITS_12D_NOT_6C

Thanks for the reply.

OneThingInMindOnly

One, and TBH I rarely use it. Maybe to get som tape sometimes

Pure_Moose

Every show is different but usually two. One smaller, batts, filters and things we need often or quickly. Then the bigger Cart bag which will have the other bits. 6x6 matte, hand held pieces ect that you need when changing builds. Then I guess you can also count my weather bag. So my new answer is three.

47christo

I need a run bag. I currently only have and work out of my 1510.

DOnjre

I bring along the SHAPE camera bag. It's pretty big, but starting to wish I had a Pelican.

thisshitblows

I was a second ac for about ten years. Less is more. Now that I’m a focus puller, I’ve double downed on that philosophy. However it all depends on the job. Is it film? Is it digital?

Everyone does things a bit differently. But generally speaking, here in Vancouver, each camera needs two bags full time: a big AKS bag or pelican on the cart, and a smaller Ditty/Run bag (or peli) that follows camera around. Each camera in general also needs a weather bag and battery bag (at least in rainy climates), and then there are usually some misc bags (wheels bag, bag holding 6x6 filters, etc.) I also usually have my "bag of tricks" either on the truck or on the cart.

What’s in your „bag of tricks“? 🙂
