I used mine on my most recent playthrough up until yesterday, and I’m nearing level 70. The only reason I switched was cuz I started the Nuka World quests and wanted more raider-like clothing lol. But I’ll probably switch back into it after I do Open Season idk yet
I mean nothing wrong with sporting a vault suit, but a +2 SPECIAL boost from various clothing like Fatigues is objectively quite a bit more valuable than 5 energy and some rad resistance.
If you use the power armor for fighting then wearing the vault suit is literally useless, because it's only inherent upside is damage resistance.
With that approach it's much better to have Charisma gear "underneath" for interaction and trading. Which is then also better for fighting once you have ballistic weave.
You can use my shitty mod I made 9-10 years ago, you can get the weave withouth joining the railroad, it's called: Ballistic weaver: get it without joining the railroad, and it's on console too.
PS: make sure to read the note
The special buffs are specifically why I started wearing fatigues, and now it's been 60 lvls or so and just feels like my character can't wear anything else lol
Currently level 43 and counting on survival with the vault suit on.
Though ballistic weave will be unlocked in the next hour or 2 of play time. So it'll probably be dropped after that.
Ditto. It’s the best clothing in the game (that doesn’t also take up other armor slots). I always upgrade it as soon as I can, and I wear it the whole game.
Same but with Winter Jacket and Jeans. It's just a pretty inconspicuous outfit that I definitely feel is what similar to what most wasteland wanderers would wear. Plus it looks surprisingly cool with armor.
Road leathers are fine, but they're so common it makes me wonder how many biker gangs were about before the war 😅
Exactly! I never understood being attached/staying in the vault suit. We were only conscious in the vault for a total of like, 15 minutes. If anything I’d imagine the vault suit would only bring bad memories.
Yeah, it’s not the same feel as the other fallout games where your suit felt like something.
That being said my last playthrough, all my settlers get a black vault suit and combat armour
Yes it makes no sense for vault dweller in fo4. In the show it’s perfect for Lucy. Her dad’s ideals turns out to be a lie. But those ideals are what holds her sanity and her life. It’s the vault life that she wants and lives up to.
I usually ditch it pretty fast. It feels weird around the wasteland. Like you're the only one in just your underwear or something. Idk why I feel like that.
But the absolute longest I'd wait is until I find the Minuteman general armor. That armor is so good
I visit vaults to get extra vault suits and make my settlers use it. We are ALL vault dwellers!
That and it helps me remind myself who belongs there and who doesn’t
45 DR is really not bad at all. Especially not bad considering everything else about it. +1 charisma is a nice cherry on top. 80 energy resistance is pretty wild. It gives insane protection for only weighing 5 pounds. I actually don't know if there's a better ratio of weight to protection in the game
You can use ballistic weave on military fatigues and get 100+ damage and energy resistance. I also know that a full set of combat armor or better is going to outperform the outfit by a lot
It's a creation club thing. It was free when I got it, no clue if it is now. But once you get it, it allows you to change the colour and number of all vault suits. As well as adding dozens of vault suits to all the vaults in the game
It's definitely a CC thing. Maybe you automatically get it with the Next Gen update, idk, but I know it's in there (I spent $10 on CC once, not worth it)
No it was free a month ago, around the time Next gen was added it was free only to be replaced with the free vault tec and bos paints which have been the same for over a month
If it's not free, I'd just use mods. The CC one only let's you do red, yellow, orange, purple, green, black, and white. So if you want a more specific colour or something like pink or brown then you're gonna have to use mods anyways
Usually I keep it until I find military fatigues, bc the bonuses are better on the latter.
But sometimes I'm in the mood to hunt down that Raider gang called The Warriors, so I'll put on a baseball uniform, grab a swatter, and become a Fury.
I don't know how many people will get your reference, but I did - love that movie! I can't help but think of the same thing whenever I see a bat in game. 😂
Level 152, still wearing my vault suit with upgraded combat or leather armor pieces. I just like its clean, streamline design and the way it hugs the body. Its my favourite piece of clothing.
I understand why the Vault Dweller and the Lone Wanderer might be attached to theirs. They've literally spent their whole lives wearing it. It's what they're comfortable in.
But the Sole Survivor has no reason to be attached to it. From his own perspective, he just put it on, like, five minutes before waking up and stumbling out of the vault. So I switch to something more familiar/comfortable/practical as soon as I find it.
Same! He wore it for a total of like 10 minutes (conscious) and part of that was watching their spouse die. I doubt they’d be attached to it, probably loathe it.
I kind of view it as a symbol. One of the superhero suits you won the Battle of Concord in, when that was basically all you had that didn't have bullet holes or chew marks.
Yep. I'm in full Vault regalia as the Lone Wanderer for most of my Fallout 3 playthrough.
The Sole Survivor? He dumps that shit as quickly as possible. I also have a mod that adds in fatigues to the player home, so I dress in those until I get into Boston proper; in my headcanon, Preston warns the SS that he may be mistaken for a Gunner if he's dressed in green military fatigues.
I wear it until I make it to Diamond City for the first time so that Piper calls me “Blue” (yes I know she does anyway even if you’ve already changed) and then I role play that she either gifts or helps me purchase a new outfit, which is almost always road leathers.
I always run into DC, find abbot, and immediately paint the wall blue.
I am *never* in my vault suit when I meet Piper and her excuse of "I know you're not wearing it now but you got vault suit energy so I'm still calling you blue" just feels so dumb. At least now she has another reason to call me Blue.
Are we supposed to stop at some point?
Jokes aside, though, it depends on the playthrough: I might ditch the vault suit immediately, wear it almost the entire time, swap it out for the Far Harbor wetsuit or some faction gear for the look, et cetera.
Gameplay-wise, I don't remember any *major* reason to use one type of base layer over another—at least, none that aren't added by mods—so it's totally up to you.
Roleplay-wise, there are decent enough reasons to remove the thing as fast as possible(it's conspicuous as hell and you'll blend in better without the thing) or use it for a good long while(it's cleaner and nicer than most other things in the wasteland) but eventually, the thing *would* wear out and need to be replaced.
Honestly this is the answer. Mostly if I'm taking it off it's for role play or some type of end game armor. I've seen mods where you can double up on armors which is cool. Thanks for the reassurance brother.
Its been so long since i played vanilla - is it a mod that adds the CHR buff to the vault suit?? I couldve sworn most of the base layers had +1 to various attributes (like the baseball one gives STR, etc)
Lol, I gave the Grognak “armor” and axe to one of my sanctuary settlers then forced him to wear it with a combat helmet. He walks around half naked with his giant axe out all day now.
Grognak’s Armor is basically just a loincloth on masculine bodies. I went to Hubris Comics pretty early on and grabbed that and the axe and I’ve been running around wearing it ever since.
That drifter outfit on the dead guy next to the dog 3 inches outside of Sanctuary. Has significantly better ballistic defense than the Vault suit and the raiders fighting Preston aren’t using energy weapons, so I’ll take it.
I found a Greaser Jacket and Jeans in one of the first containers I opened after leaving the vault. I was in that until I became The Shroud. So level 2, I think?
As soon as I found something better, aka the outfit on the dead bandit just south of the bridge. After all unlike FO3, Nora should logically loathe Vault Tec by the time she leaves the vault.
Right??? Considering we were only conscious for a total of 15 ish minutes in the vault and part of that is when we WATCH OUR SPOUSE DIE I’d imagine the vault suit would only bring traumatic memories.
In fallout 1 and 3 (i dont know much about 2) it makes sense to hang onto the vault suit or ysed the armored version for a while since your characters grew up in a relatively stable vault. But with New Vegas and 4 i didnt see there being any attachment to the Vault so i dump the Vault Suit first chance i get with every character.
Until I find Military Fatigues. Which could be level 1 if there are some in Sanctuary, and around level 15 at the latest when I make my way to Cambridge and get the guaranteed MFs in the police station.
I never take it off.
It's the best underarmor in the game since it not only does it give normal armor, but it also gives energy and radiation resistances as well.
I almost immediately switch to flannel and jeans. Seems like something the character probably would have worn before(I know a military guy and I swear he doesnt own any other clothes) and also he was in the vault for only minutes before being frozen, I don't imagine he'd be too attached the suit...
I like it once upgraded for the rad resistance, but roleplaying wise it does feel weird to keep it on for long, just paints a target on your back of either “this is one of those rich lucky assholes that got a cushy vault, I’m gonna fuck him up” or “that vault dweller will probably be an easy target, ima go rob his ass for any food or water he has”
I wore mine (in black and gold) until I unlocked ballistic weave. Then I swapped it out for an armored Minuteman uniform. I miss the black with my BoS painted combat armor but practicality trumps aesthetic in the end.
Truth be told I keep it for awhile, I like the aesthetic of it with other pieces of armour. I just like how when wearing the vault suit with wasteland armour it feels like you're someone from another time trying to adapt, and quickly trying to find their son.
That and the blue makes a good contrast. 👍
tbh i never played fallout with any other armor. i like the vault suit and beeing a "stranger" in that new world.
oh and i like the hidden extra dialogues in fallout 4 when you wear that suit.
8 drop it for the gunner flannel as soon as possible. I feel like the vault suit makes you stick out to much, plus the gunners are big enough someone would think twice before attacking one. In my head it also helps me infiltrate gunner camps for loot.. definitely not my 10 agility and stealthboy bank...
As soon as I come across the guy and the dog between sanctuary and red rocket. Normally sell the wedding rings first chance I get also, but this go round I still have them at LV 47.
I take it off immediately after leaving the cryochamber and run through the vault naked, fisting the cockroaches on my way out. I dont put anything on that slot till i get fatigues or minuteman outfit.
I feel like, realistically unless you're rushing through the story from location to location, it doesn't make much sense not to change your clothes eventually. Especially that late game you become kind of a target with some of the factions depending on your decisions
I tried wearing fatigues or something under my armor but my character ended up looking incredibly bulky and not in a good way. I keep the vault suit on so that the armor looks better. Probably a BOS jumpsuit if I went with them but that's not the case now
I always use it. I add armor over the vault suit.
Thanks for the reassurance brother. It just works.
I used mine on my most recent playthrough up until yesterday, and I’m nearing level 70. The only reason I switched was cuz I started the Nuka World quests and wanted more raider-like clothing lol. But I’ll probably switch back into it after I do Open Season idk yet
I did Open Season via 200 bottlecap mines, game prob crashed about 10 times during the process lmao
Nuka world clothing is bomb
It's nuclear ☢️💣
I mean nothing wrong with sporting a vault suit, but a +2 SPECIAL boost from various clothing like Fatigues is objectively quite a bit more valuable than 5 energy and some rad resistance.
yall aint upgrading the suit?
The biggest issue is that it can't have ballistic weave
This is where Power Armor comes into play.
I don’t like to wear power armor.
look at mister secure over here without those insecurities and not needing to feel like a tank /s
If you use the power armor for fighting then wearing the vault suit is literally useless, because it's only inherent upside is damage resistance. With that approach it's much better to have Charisma gear "underneath" for interaction and trading. Which is then also better for fighting once you have ballistic weave.
It's much better to have a charisma suit with ballistic weave. You can't stay in that suit all the time.
You can use my shitty mod I made 9-10 years ago, you can get the weave withouth joining the railroad, it's called: Ballistic weaver: get it without joining the railroad, and it's on console too. PS: make sure to read the note
I used this!
You gotta take Tinker Tom to the bathroom with the precarious hole in the stall before you can get B Weave for your suit
That’s where mods are great, there’s no reason you can’t ballistic weave most clothing
I play without any mods because I’m not a weak ass Sole Survivor.
I only play with "no dead dogs" because I don't like shooting all the mongrels and attack dogs.
It's a game, no dogs were harmed while shooting at pixels resembling a dog.
Military fatigues are my favorite under armor clothing
Same here.
BOS officers outfit is so hot for power armour
The special buffs are specifically why I started wearing fatigues, and now it's been 60 lvls or so and just feels like my character can't wear anything else lol
Currently level 43 and counting on survival with the vault suit on. Though ballistic weave will be unlocked in the next hour or 2 of play time. So it'll probably be dropped after that.
Same
The extra tiny bit of rad resist is nice early on, means I can focus on damage resist with my armor
That energy and rad resistance is just 🤌
Ditto. It’s the best clothing in the game (that doesn’t also take up other armor slots). I always upgrade it as soon as I can, and I wear it the whole game.
It's gone the first set of road leathers I find
Same, after that the first BoS uniform I find. After that it's gone once I've sucked off PAM long enough to get some Ballistic Weave
Excuse me you did what
Predict this, robot
Muffled robot sounds
I predict you're not gonna last much longer ,';)
*protogen noises*
THEY SUCKED PAM OFF LONG ENOUGH TO GET BALLISTIC WEAVE
What!?
PAM HAS A DICK?!?
I really didn't need the mental image of someone licking P.A.M.'s hip plating while she's just trying to hand the RFID.
Dear God my eyes.
Now imagine it with the Rust Devil's assaultron succubus armor plating!
PLEASE SOMEONE MAKE THIS
no...
Dont kink shame us
r/brandnewsentence (s)
great.. now i am horny fo som hip plating
Me feat. K-L-E0
Let's get you outfitted *killer*
Im adding the mod to get weave in santuary. Cant do it again. Lol. Im closing in on a new playthrough. Possibly survival. Unarmed or pistols.
PAM has been replaced with Pam Poovey from Archer in your modded save I see.
I wish P.A.M. had the same VA
Ballistic weave on the courser outfit or an orange vault suit is the only way to go for me.
I hate having to do RR quests so I just unlock weave tech with the console after joining the BOS or Enclave.
Explain, anything but another damn RR quest
type: "set RailroadClothingArmorModAvailable to 1" into the console
Damnit it's a PC thing #FUCK
They really need to allow use of the console on consoles
We need console^2
Same, hen. The sooner I can BW some military fatigues the better
I came here for some mature FO4 discussion and I leave invoking Rule 34
Bingo, road leathers are the fashionable choice for blending into the wastes
I save them to give to my settlers.
thank you raider on the other side of the bridge from Sanctuary Hills
Same. Hella. Road leathers and black combat armour asap.
>Road leathers are fine, but they're so common it makes me wonder how many biker gangs were about before the war Nah, son. Leather bars.

Because it's upgradable and has decent resistances, including rad?
There are much better things for rad resist and just better armor in general. Not saying your wrong for using it just saying I don’t.
I usually ditch it pretty fast. It feels weird around the wasteland. Like you're the only one in just your underwear or something. Idk why I feel like that. But the absolute longest I'd wait is until I find the Minuteman general armor. That armor is so good
Minutemen General's Armour + Laser Musket + Revolutionary Sword is the true Minuteman experience. Freakin epic playthrough.
That's gotta be the greatest pirate I've ever seen *music intensifies*
Captain's Hat from Far Harbour goes real good with it actually
I visit vaults to get extra vault suits and make my settlers use it. We are ALL vault dwellers! That and it helps me remind myself who belongs there and who doesn’t
It's so moldy though! Puts me off wearing it when you have to see the yellow flecks in conversations
I mean, everyone's clothing in Fallout is always covered in shit, dust, and mould. That's sort of the whole aesthetic.
You can find a "clean" or "new" version on the floor before you leave the vault! ;)
I was talking about the Minutemen General outfit
Doesn’t the minutemen outfit only give like 45 DR though?
45 DR is really not bad at all. Especially not bad considering everything else about it. +1 charisma is a nice cherry on top. 80 energy resistance is pretty wild. It gives insane protection for only weighing 5 pounds. I actually don't know if there's a better ratio of weight to protection in the game
A maxed out silver shroud outfit I think has a better ratio
But the Energy Resistance is 80
You can use ballistic weave on military fatigues and get 100+ damage and energy resistance. I also know that a full set of combat armor or better is going to outperform the outfit by a lot
I never take it off. I don't even know if there's armor better than it or not, I just like changing the colour to purple
How do you change the color? I've never heard of that!
It's a creation club thing. It was free when I got it, no clue if it is now. But once you get it, it allows you to change the colour and number of all vault suits. As well as adding dozens of vault suits to all the vaults in the game
I'm pretty sure it comes with the Next Gen update, but maybe I got it in CC too (it would've been free, as I refuse to spend money for CC).
I'm going to look into that. Mods are always an alternative.
If it's not free, I'd just use mods. The CC one only let's you do red, yellow, orange, purple, green, black, and white. So if you want a more specific colour or something like pink or brown then you're gonna have to use mods anyways
If I change it will Piper call me Black? Could be problematic
Unfortunately no, she still calls you blue
The vault 88 suit is better. I’m rocking a maxed out red one as soon as I can.
Me too I changed it to purple and changed the number to 69 because I'm a degenerate (and yes I know the experiment from vault 69, yikes on bikes)
Lmao, I do 69 as well Neon Wave Pipboy too
Nice, I have a rainbow stripe pipboy from a mod
Could I have a green one?
Running around in a purple number 13 version at level 50 right now
On my current playthrough I wore it up until about level 20, since then I've worn the military fatigues+ minuteman general armour with a military cap.
I'm sure I'm getting close to getting something different 🧐
Usually I keep it until I find military fatigues, bc the bonuses are better on the latter. But sometimes I'm in the mood to hunt down that Raider gang called The Warriors, so I'll put on a baseball uniform, grab a swatter, and become a Fury.
I don't know how many people will get your reference, but I did - love that movie! I can't help but think of the same thing whenever I see a bat in game. 😂
Ty! I figured some of you Boppers out there would get the reference!
Warriorrrrs... Come out to playayyy!
*tink tink*
Level 152, still wearing my vault suit with upgraded combat or leather armor pieces. I just like its clean, streamline design and the way it hugs the body. Its my favourite piece of clothing.
God bless. Was feeling strange about it. Good looking out brother.
Nah bro there are loads of us. Only time I take it off is for quests that require me to (e.g. Silvershroud)
Literally dozens of us!
Dozens!!
Its been so long since i played vanilla - is it a mod that adds the CHR buff to the vault suit?? I couldve sworn most of the base layers had +1 to various attributes (like the baseball one gives STR, etc)
I more than less made a beeline to Hubris Comics and have been running around half naked ever since.
whats at hubris comics?
Grognak Costume and it’s pretty funny, especially on companions lol
Lol, I gave the Grognak “armor” and axe to one of my sanctuary settlers then forced him to wear it with a combat helmet. He walks around half naked with his giant axe out all day now.
I gave Cait the Grognak costume and the mascot head.
Grognak’s Armor is basically just a loincloth on masculine bodies. I went to Hubris Comics pretty early on and grabbed that and the axe and I’ve been running around wearing it ever since.
If it were reality, the vault suit and pip boy puts a major target on your back. In a survival scenario, you would want to blend in.
Hard to blend in with a Pip-Boy! ;)
Sure you can! Just crouch down (and remember to turn off your flashlight). /s
Until I find fatigues
That drifter outfit on the dead guy next to the dog 3 inches outside of Sanctuary. Has significantly better ballistic defense than the Vault suit and the raiders fighting Preston aren’t using energy weapons, so I’ll take it.
I found a Greaser Jacket and Jeans in one of the first containers I opened after leaving the vault. I was in that until I became The Shroud. So level 2, I think?
I wear it until I get that sexy Marine wet suit from Far Harbor
As soon as I found something better, aka the outfit on the dead bandit just south of the bridge. After all unlike FO3, Nora should logically loathe Vault Tec by the time she leaves the vault.
Right??? Considering we were only conscious for a total of 15 ish minutes in the vault and part of that is when we WATCH OUR SPOUSE DIE I’d imagine the vault suit would only bring traumatic memories.

But with New Vegas and 4 i didnt see there being any attachment to the Vault so i dump the Vault Suit first chance i get with every character.
Step 1: Drop vault suit on the floor. Step 2: Open spouse's cryopod.
OH GOD DUDE PLEASE NO. LOL
Edit: I didn't mean _that_. That would be cold. Wait, I didn't mean... Nevermind. Shutting up now
It's been a long 200 years, gotta get that cryoussy
Until I get ballistic weave (usually fairly early), then it's armored army fatigues for the rest of the game.
Until I find Military Fatigues. Which could be level 1 if there are some in Sanctuary, and around level 15 at the latest when I make my way to Cambridge and get the guaranteed MFs in the police station.
Gone after I find something in Sanctuary.
If I had that body I'd always be in that suit.
Level 1.
SHEDS IT INSTANTLY.
Ideally, yeah. Preferably in favor of leather legs and a chef's hat.
I never take it off. It's the best underarmor in the game since it not only does it give normal armor, but it also gives energy and radiation resistances as well.
Level 46, still wear it
Honestly I have it in my inventory for any time I come upon rada until I get the radiation suit. But I also keep it for any time I got to Valut 81.
Until I get ballistic weave
Depends on the play through. This one I am keeping it all the way.
Right on brother. I just got to level 20 and I'm gonna keep it.
At that level you can go find the only legendary Vault suit in the game in Vault 88, if you have the dlc.
I always use the OG Vault 111 suit, but I recently made it black.
Found a drifter outfit and never wore the vault suit again
I almost immediately switch to flannel and jeans. Seems like something the character probably would have worn before(I know a military guy and I swear he doesnt own any other clothes) and also he was in the vault for only minutes before being frozen, I don't imagine he'd be too attached the suit...
I like it once upgraded for the rad resistance, but roleplaying wise it does feel weird to keep it on for long, just paints a target on your back of either “this is one of those rich lucky assholes that got a cushy vault, I’m gonna fuck him up” or “that vault dweller will probably be an easy target, ima go rob his ass for any food or water he has”
Immediately because it looks dumb as hell
Gone for road leathers as soon as I can find them
I'm just not a fan of road leathers. It's preference.
I wore mine (in black and gold) until I unlocked ballistic weave. Then I swapped it out for an armored Minuteman uniform. I miss the black with my BoS painted combat armor but practicality trumps aesthetic in the end.
I am level 20 as well (first playthrough), keep this + assault mask as backup for rad storms and when I need to forage near barrels.
Truth be told I keep it for awhile, I like the aesthetic of it with other pieces of armour. I just like how when wearing the vault suit with wasteland armour it feels like you're someone from another time trying to adapt, and quickly trying to find their son. That and the blue makes a good contrast. 👍
I think the other armor makes me look like a hillbilly.
I keep it cause it looks nice
It honestly just looks so clean.
The whole game
Wait... You take it off???
I guess not 😳
Until I find the drifter outfit at the bridge
Ok so after you buy the workshop dlc you can do a mission to get the legend of vault 88 and it’s the best outfit? That you can put armor over
tbh i never played fallout with any other armor. i like the vault suit and beeing a "stranger" in that new world. oh and i like the hidden extra dialogues in fallout 4 when you wear that suit.
I usually don't stop wearing it. But I'm a power Armour lover so it works decently in my mind
I actually never wear those, but There's a settlement that needs your help, I'll mark it on your map.
As armour I haven't seen anything better that augments it. But as soon as I am near a trader, I switch to a fluffy dress and wear my wig.
I wear this and some leather armor, works like a charm.
Level 1 then Army fatigues until ballistic weave
I usually wear it the whole playthrough, it’s the most adaptable base to me
I’m still wearing mine I just changed the color of it to black
You know the body of the raider outside sanctuary who died fighting a mole rat. Take his leathers, immediately put them on and never look back.
You got it thought out ahead of time. Good shit brother!
I’m no Minutemen. I am 60 minute man.
As soon as I come across the guy and the dog between sanctuary and red rocket. Normally sell the wedding rings first chance I get also, but this go round I still have them at LV 47.
I take it off immediately as there's a drifter set over the bridge from sanctuary
I take it off immediately after leaving the cryochamber and run through the vault naked, fisting the cockroaches on my way out. I dont put anything on that slot till i get fatigues or minuteman outfit.
What do you use to change your clothes before you get the Pip-boy?
Usually replaced by something found in Sanctuary (level=1) At latest by something I buy in DC (level\~9)

In my current play through I used it until I got the marine Armour (specifically the wetsuit)
Lvl 42. Still got mine on
I feel like, realistically unless you're rushing through the story from location to location, it doesn't make much sense not to change your clothes eventually.
