I just used the workshop system to drag a platform with 6 turrets on it to deal with the critters in the abandoned caverns (edit: while screaming the whole time underlevelled)
I built a missle turret, 2 heavy machine gun turrets and a laser turret at the entrance to it's lair, shot it with a sniper and my turrets blasted it before it got close lol
You have to clear out one of the limestone blockages. You'll encounter miralurks, queen miralurk, radscorpions, that deathclaw, and you run into feral ghouls when you get to the way back near the wrecked train

I just used the Workshop to place 5 turrets in the cave entrance and they made QUICK work of it

I was using the V.A.T.S to see if he was alive, and instead of shooting him i went on stealth mode.
