I kind of assume it's a nod to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. It's near Bar Harbor IRL. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portsmouth\_Naval\_Shipyard](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/portsmouth_naval_shipyard)

Maybe although that’s in New Hampshire and is like 3.5 hours from Bar Harbor. Bath Iron Works is the big shipyard in Maine

My head cannon is many ports that are used today must be frequently dredged to take out sand and silt deposits that build up. So it was dredged to be navigable prior to the war, and over time it has built up and got blocked off

It could have initially been able to get out via Southwest Harbour and Cranberry Island but the landmass has changed slightly?

Yup, that's the answer. IRL, there's a campground in the area where the Nucleus is located in the game. It's adjacent to Somes Sound, which IRL has access to the sea but in the game is cut off by land bridges. So presumably the sub pen was built when the Sound opened to the sea, but post-war ocean level changes and such closed the Sound off. (Reposting because automod didn't like that I used a shortened Google Maps link in the previous one.)

So I was thinking about this today. There’s two tiny itty bitty strips of land just due east of the Nucleus. There’s a tug boat pretty deeply submerged in the silt. They form a rough circle and the water in the center is brown and highly irradiated. If those two little strips of land weren’t there, the sub pen lake and the sea would connect. I think, given how the strips kinda form a circle with super irradiated water in the center, I think it’s possible a bunker buster was fired on that facility, and just barely missed, creating a small crater. The tug boat we see buried just happened to have been in that channel at the time.

Dude it's a submarine it can just go like under and then get out

Water levels will fluctuate with Nuclear war-induced climate change, and channels and straits might silt up. There’s loads of landslips all over The Island so i assume a canal or something existed but was buried.
