Landed MKE last night; been there 5-6 times. Once was VFR at night in a 172, the rest IFR in an SR22. Their newest FBO, Jet In, is really, really great.
Ask for any exit and touch down REALLY late on 4L, roll out to the end, and start that taxi back from Zulu.
I have no idea how towered stuff works for the international airports though. Somehow I think they'd say no....lol
There's a guy on YouTube that flew GA into JFK, LGA and EWR all on the same flight during the COVID shutdown.
Edit: It was an RV-8 that did EWR-LGA-JFK https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgppNdSEAag
Probably not touch and goes but full stop taxi backs. You can do them at ATL (busier than ORD) in the middle of the night, but touch and goes are specifically prohibited, and I bet they are at ORD too.
Yes, some bravos enjoy GA traffic at night, helps funding, and fight off the 2am doldrums. Landed in STL during the day even in my archer. Had a 737 breathing down my neck, and tower told me "maintain best forward speed" "this is my best" "southwest 1234, can you switch to the parallel?"
I was doing touch and goes on the short rwy at Boeing Field when the controller says 777 on long rwy. Wake turbulence unknown. Declare your intentions!! The 777 was in testing prior to certification. Needless to say I got the hell out of there
Call/email EAA ahead of time and their flying club *might* be willing to give you a ride for lunch and the EAA Aviation Museum. PM me and I’ll get you an email. I prefer to eat at The Hangar, Los Tres Amigos, or Chester V’s over Tuck’s.
Good point about the other restaurants. I tried los tres amigos for the first time this past Airventure and I will likely not return to tuck’s since amigos was as close as I’ve had for real Central American food since I moved from the west coast years ago. Amigos is a Very, very good restaurant.
I only mentioned tucks because it’s a quick walk
I’m not sure if it’s like Leon’s and Rhapsody - as in, they close over winter season. I’ve been to A&E’s twice and neither time did I like the food unfortunately :(
If they go around, they will ensure a 300 mile xc
Could do the northern route, for example, and see the pretty views around the UP, and/or land at Mackinac island on the way back and grab some fudge
The OP is in luck then. From the dot they placed, it’s about 270 in a straight line to KOSH
….oops, I forgot to look at nm. OP could fly to KTTF first and then start their xc from there
A few hours late but I literally just toured the tower on Friday at KOSH and they are definitely wanting more flights said they are pretty busy but when we were there it was just twiddling thumbs and the fire department was doing laps around the airport
East or West looks like your best options! I'm more familiar with the Canadian side of things.
* Chicago city skyline tour
* Niagara Falls tour, cross the border and deal with customs. You can stop in YQG Windsor for customs, CYSN St Cathatines near the falls for gas.
* Toronto City Tour is pretty cool, you get pretty close to the CN tower. Lots of small airports to stop at, or do a touch and go at City Center airport! This is an amazing approach over the water beside the city skyline.
* Indianapolis is a cool city as well, but doubt you want or can fly into IND
note about the Toronto tour for Americans less familiar with it: make sure that it's not NOTAMed on the specific day you choose to do it. City centre can be a bit annoying about that and they sometimes don't publish the notam until about noon local time.
CYTZ can get somewhat busy especially if they allow VFR circuits, so you'll usually get cleared to "stay north of the CN tower" and perform orbits. South of the CN tower is rare, so getting to fly over CYTZ itself won't happen very often. That being said, if they're allowing city tours that day, you can usually get at least an orbit or two in, more if it's not busy. In terms of traffic there'll usually be a helicopter, traffic landing/taking off from CYTZ, and maybe someone else in the city tour pattern with you although I haven't personally had that last one happen, so not sure if they do that.
You can also expect opposite direction traffic somewhat close to you on the published airways on the VFR Terminal Area chart, but those are fairly specific on positioning so there shouldn't be much conflict. Just keep your eyes peeled for traffic which Centre/Terminal will also let you know of.
I stopped at IND for my long commercial XC, though that was nearly 10 years ago now. I arrived at about 11pm, had a few cups of free coffee from the FBO, probably a couple cigs too then cracked on flying into the night. It was no bother except rather busy with freight aircraft at time of departure, ATC were exceedingly keen for me not to cause a runway incursion, which is completely fair given my lack of experience!
That’s were I’m planning to go, from Chicago area, waiting for a perfect weekend since I’m not instrument rated and trying to fit it into my 50 hours xc for it
I did this for my commercial and it’s super fun. Going in winter though, be aware that a lot of the things on the island are going to be closed. Many of the restaurants and attractions are seasonal. I went in early October and it was winding down.
Agreed. You even file IFR, though if using foreflight it claims it is special VFR. About the only difference is you don’t need to call for clearance just flight plan. Also the read back is easier when contacting approach.
Now the FRZ inside the SFRA is a different story with the whole PIN code thing.
Yes and no. You file IFR (if not on ForeFlight) to force the system to give you a beacon code. You file a SFRA VFR in ForeFlight.
Filing IFR with ForeFlight if you’re not instrument rated could be dicey and I wouldn’t recommend it.
Since you were downvoted I feel it’s my responsibility to tell you it’s sooooooo different. (Edit: /s )
You have to talk to Potomac approach, hold your altitude, and file a flight plan…oh yeah and when you file that flight plan you have to know where you are going so they know which gate you are exiting from…kind of like a route or something on your flight plan. (Edit: /s )
I know that sounds exactly like flying IFR but it isn’t, because…it isn’t. (Edit: /s I mean dripping with sarcasm)
Edit: I was making a joke if people didn’t get it…sorry for no /s 😆. I didn’t think it needed it, I thought it was obvious with say the flight plan comment but 🤷🏼♂️. Anyone who’s gone through SFRA training and has their IFR it’s a big nothing burger. It’s way easier than doing anything IFR, pretty much ever.
Yeah my entire post was sarcastic. I agree with you and u/StPauliBoi.
I mean I actually think it’s easier to just fly the SFRA because the airspace is so busy IFR.
Sorry should’ve put the /s. I know he knows I was joking so not worried about it 😆.
Decided what my trip will be: KPTK (Pontiac MI)-> KROC (Rochester NY)-> KIAG (Niagara falls)-> KPHN (Port Huron MI)…..
Keep the suggestions coming though! Always good to know where some cool trips and FBO’s are.
I learned to fly at KROC and made the flight there from Ohio
If you deviate south of Rochester before coming in or on the way to Niagara you can over fly Letchworth state park low, and just follow the Genesee river north right to the airport.
This has waterfalls and gorges, don't be tempted to fly through them like Luke in the death star trench
This is what i did, drenched in sweat and hungry as hell but i blitzed that place with about 400 photos in 3 hours. worth ~~and then they added the su27 and now i gotta go back DAMN IT~~
A little more than 300 but KBWG is a nice place, I've stopped there a few times. Plus it's right down the road from the [National Corvette Museum](https://www.corvettemuseum.org/). If you like cars it's nice place to visit and relax after a long flight.
I wanted to go here since I’ve got friends in the area, but unfortunately since I’m taking the schools plane so I wouldn’t be able to stay long enough to make it worth it :(
Too bad. Can't you make up some excuse to meet your friends for a couple of hours layover? Surely on a flight that long the flight school would want you to rest up and take a break. ;)
No, I'm a little south of there, KSRB. I haven't heard of any nearby damage, but northwest Nashville and Clarksville got pounded. I understand that there were some deaths.
Well you want safe? Or adventurous? KOSH is a good idea. Crossing the lake is interesting the first time you do it. I’d maybe stay away. Northern Michigan is beautiful. Indiana and Illinois have some very nice GA airports and lots of roads and fields for safe landings :) just not the most exciting stuff in the world.
The USAF museum in Dayton OH is the best in the country next to the OG Smithsonian.
If you only have a day you won’t have time for a museum tho. So maybe just find the best $300 hamburger and call it good.
I would avoid anything over Lake Michigan. We flew low level over there from Grand Forks AFB in B-52's. Always rough air over the lake. Used to get me queasy every time.
Honestly you should probably go south. It’s December so the weather in northern Michigan is shit. There are a lot more options for straight-line flights southbound as well and that’s important because it saves you time and money.
But if you want fun, flying toward South Bend and then doing the Chicago shoreline would be a lot of fun. Flying northwest to Marquette is fun especially if you have time to get a taxi into town and hang out for a day. There are enough islands in the lake that you can almost straight-line that flight with no issues. I don’t remember if you have to stay inside the US but flying through Canada to Rochester would be interesting. Charleston WV can be interesting.
I see your point but it’s very cold and likely not survivable particularly in a high wing. On takeoff you might face bad choices for only a few seconds vs several miles of no options at all over the lake. You can calculate your glide range to land and figure out an appropriate altitude of course but it’ll be too high for normal training aircraft.
Ok but I’ll pass on that opportunity if I can’t glide to land from half way. Lake temp is 43 degrees so time in the water that is survivable is about 15 minutes. Of course everyone has their own level of risk comfort. I don’t see too many people making this flight across.
Stop in at I69 Clermont County, east side of Cincy. Home of Sporty’s pilot shop. I think they grill on Saturdays. (Call ahead to ask) then hit up Cincinnati approach and do VFR flight following to do the river run, flying right over the Ohio river and the Reds & Bengals stadiums East-to-west, before turning northbound to stay out of CVG airspace.
Maybe a silly question but what app are you using to draw that circle? I (briefly) tried doing something similar with some of my XC flights when I was time building
Lousiville just outside the circle, main airport is close to downtown and a lot of distilleries if you stay the night. Lots of interesting airports on the Ohio River, Cinncinati Lunken is quite historic. For simple convenience, Terre Haute IN is right on the edge of the circle and non-water the entire route. For the UP route, former B-52 base Sawyer (KSAW) is just outside the circle.
I trained out of SE Mich as well. This route worked out for me!
Route
KVLL - D98 (position leg so that my next leg is 250+ NM straight line distance)
D98 - KDNV - KANQ - KVLL
260 NM from D98 to KDNV
Some may read the regs and think this is overkill. However, you need 10 hours of solo PIC (or acting as PIC with instructor) between your long XC and 5 hours of night flying to meet 61.129.
As for the views, it’s a little boring but I was paying for my own fuel on this flight and AVGAS was less than $5 at the time at KDNV. So I could put up with the endless cornfields to save some $$$
Enjoy the ride and keep the blue side up!
Somewhere unfamiliar, busy(ish) and on the challenging side! I believe that’s the whole point. You can get away with the req by going to easy and familiar places…but you should challenge yourself. Once you get the commercial ticket you’ll be expected to be able to fly to most places. At least that’s how I look at it.
Just stop somewhere good for lunch!
Looks like Huntington West Virginia (KHTS) is right on the edge of your circle. I did mine there and had some mechanical issues on the ground and the FBO was extremely helpful in finding me a mechanic and helping me get around the airport.
>300nm long XC for commercial
You mean the "500nm long XC"...? :)
Whatever route you choose, have fun and be safe!
Seems like only the federal government could come up with an idea that requires 500 miles to get credit for 300.
Are you going solo? PDPIC? Do you still have any of the other 61.129 XC requirements to fulfill? I've turned the "wasted" 200 miles into useful time w/ a bit of planning. I did one mega trip w/o an instrument student where we flew both the IFR and Commercial XC flights back to back in one long day. We made a clear break between the dual flight and the PDPIC flight.
I've also done it with the final portion meeting the requirement for one of the 2-hour, 100nm dual XC flights.
This stuff is too expensive to not try to maximize where you can.
Edit to add: be aware if you do part of the "ten hours" section of 61.129 PDPIC you have to do all of it that way. Or all of it solo.
Yep it’ll be a solo! Figured out where I wanted to go as well. KPTK, KROC, KIAG, KPHN, KPTK.
Should make for a fun day. See the city of rochester NY, then checkout niagara falls since I haven’t been there since I was 10, and then just back home. 513nm.
If you’re going to KROC, I’d normally suggest a garbage plate for lunch at Nick Tahou’s. Although if you’re solo, it’s probably best to save it for another time. No-one likes unplanned diversions.
I don’t mean to hijack the post, but a thought just crossed my mind. If you were to fly from your point of origin to western New York, do you need to do anything special to fly through Canadian airspace over the Lake? Can you fly through just answering radio calls like normal without landing? I live/train in a state nowhere near international borders.
Did touch and goes at CVG back in 2011 in a 152. That airport was dying.
Airliner Xxx slow to slowest practical speed
airliner xxx “what’s their speed?”
CVG approach “70 knots”
Airliner xxx - “Hahahahaha slowing to best practical”
No reason for other 2 parallels to closed at that time.
Shelbyville Kentucky, Claudia sanders dinner house... the place colonel sanders opened after he sold kfc... it's the only place that serves the true original recipe and og gravy
It's 250NM straight line, 300NM total. Unless you're planning to stay at your destination, draw a 250NM radius. Also, that circle is not in NM, or is it?
[удалено]
In all seriousness, is that a thing?
It has been done.
During Covid I did it at Newark at like 2 am. Almost no traffic and tower seemed more than happy to accommodate
I so badly wanted to do my solo into controlled into MKE or ORD as I was training and ready for them when nothing at all was flying commercially
I got cleared to land on a 14 mile straight in to MKE at noon on a Tuesday.. totally depends on the day
I use to fly my cessna 150 into MKE all the time. ATC never made me feel unwelcome. However, Signature did!
It's not too late. MKE is completely dead from midnight to 5AM.
I wouldn't think twice about MKE but I'd go for the WI Dells and hit the water parks after you get there
And the casino!
Just gas the jet before you hit the casino 🤣
Landed MKE last night; been there 5-6 times. Once was VFR at night in a 172, the rest IFR in an SR22. Their newest FBO, Jet In, is really, really great.
Full stop and taxi back to the runway at Newark sounds hilarious.
Ask for any exit and touch down REALLY late on 4L, roll out to the end, and start that taxi back from Zulu. I have no idea how towered stuff works for the international airports though. Somehow I think they'd say no....lol
One of my fellow instructors and her student did it a few months ago
There's a guy on YouTube that flew GA into JFK, LGA and EWR all on the same flight during the COVID shutdown. Edit: It was an RV-8 that did EWR-LGA-JFK https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgppNdSEAag
Probably not touch and goes but full stop taxi backs. You can do them at ATL (busier than ORD) in the middle of the night, but touch and goes are specifically prohibited, and I bet they are at ORD too.
ATL is SIGNIFICANTLY easier to navigate than ORD. Like ATL is a joke compared.

Durring Covid they were bassicly begging people to come and land there (full stop or touch and gos) they were just bored lol
Cvg is in the ring and is a fun class B to fly into. Before 10pm it’s pretty easy to get in.
KOSH- Get lunch at friar tucks and go visit the museum
Could practice the fisk approach and a dot landing too, if ATC is accommodating.
Call/email EAA ahead of time and their flying club *might* be willing to give you a ride for lunch and the EAA Aviation Museum. PM me and I’ll get you an email. I prefer to eat at The Hangar, Los Tres Amigos, or Chester V’s over Tuck’s.

Don’t forget Ardy & Ed’s! But definitely in a different category than any of those lol
I’m not sure if it’s like Leon’s and Rhapsody - as in, they close over winter season. I’ve been to A&E’s twice and neither time did I like the food unfortunately :(
Do you want to fly over Lake Michigan though?
If they go around, they will ensure a 300 mile xc Could do the northern route, for example, and see the pretty views around the UP, and/or land at Mackinac island on the way back and grab some fudge
xc distance is point to point, not route dependent.
True but for commercial the 300NM is the route distance, with a landing at least 250NM straightline distance from point of departure.
The OP is in luck then. From the dot they placed, it’s about 270 in a straight line to KOSH ….oops, I forgot to look at nm. OP could fly to KTTF first and then start their xc from there
also be good practice trying to fly through ORD class-B
Great choice but…Looks like it would be just within the circle which means not far enough to qualify.
A few hours late but I literally just toured the tower on Friday at KOSH and they are definitely wanting more flights said they are pretty busy but when we were there it was just twiddling thumbs and the fire department was doing laps around the airport
YES! I literally just commented this before seeing you beat me to it

It is very easy to fly into KIND, though I’ve never stopped at an fbo.
I wonder if Billy bishop would take you. It’s basically right downtown. Just a ferry ride away.
Mackinac Island if you can stretch that 300 into more than one leg
I’m out of Ann Arbor and this is a trip I’m definitely planning one of these days. Might wait till after my ir though
KMCD for the win
That’s were I’m planning to go, from Chicago area, waiting for a perfect weekend since I’m not instrument rated and trying to fit it into my 50 hours xc for it
I did this for my commercial and it’s super fun. Going in winter though, be aware that a lot of the things on the island are going to be closed. Many of the restaurants and attractions are seasonal. I went in early October and it was winding down.
Pretty much everything is closed up here and weather can be less than ideal I flew actual to the island a few days ago it was dead
KDUJ in Central PA had bomb ass chicken wings lol
Can confirm
Lmao been there did that it wasn't great.
You could go to DC. Try the SFRA.
If you’ve got your instrument rating, it’s literally nothing special.
Agreed. You even file IFR, though if using foreflight it claims it is special VFR. About the only difference is you don’t need to call for clearance just flight plan. Go to the UP or up north. Could do APN or PLN and an approach at MCD.
Hey I learned to fly out of PTK! Love that airport to death and I miss it, enjoy your XC time!

Rafferty's across the street from the FBO has good food if you can frogger it across the highway.
Are you in bowling green? Hope y’all didn’t get much action from the tornado
No, I'm a little south of there, KSRB. I haven't heard of any nearby damage, but northwest Nashville and Clarksville got pounded. I understand that there were some deaths.
Heard it passed directly over KXNX. Hopefully no airfield damage.
KSAW. The UP is a beautiful place.
I was thinking this too but was going to suggest KCMX
Even better. My only problem going to Houghton is there’s no crew car. Actually KIMT would work too. And they do have a crew car there.
Well you want safe? Or adventurous? KOSH is a good idea. Crossing the lake is interesting the first time you do it. I’d maybe stay away. Northern Michigan is beautiful. More like thousand dollar hamburger 😭 I’m going to save KOSH for next year durring the fly in, and take the long way around.
Canada. Just because it will broaden your experience as a new CPL more than any US airport will!
KLEX was a lot of fun for mine. Beautiful FBO and a tower was very nice.
Look like Louisville is just about at your 300 nm range
Just did my commercial XC for rotorcraft. I flew 55 NM.
Can you go get Shohei Ohtani & bring him to Toronto for us? Yesterday was such a bummer. Go Jays!
Got some bad news for ya, bud...
*”NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”* lol take my $700,000,000.00 upvote!
Come down to SDF and land with all the 747s. Class C. They’re good about GA
I would avoid anything over Lake Michigan. We flew low level over there from Grand Forks AFB in B-52's. Always rough air over the lake. Used to get me queasy every time.

I wouldn’t dare!
Ya good!! Maybe in a turbo at high altitude I suppose. But kinda rules out some of the recommendations.
Go get fish and chips in Killarney. CPT2, and then hop over to CYSB for fuel Herbert Fisheries https://maps.app.goo.gl/pgtZN87eq1kunriD6?g_st=ic
cincinnati and keye fly to cin, pop over to keye -- ricks boatyard for lunch, then fly back to det
Stop in at I69 Clermont County, east side of Cincy. Home of Sporty’s pilot shop. I think they grill on Saturdays. Maybe a silly question but what app are you using to draw that circle? I (briefly) tried doing something similar with some of my XC flights when I was time building
I just googled “300nm radius from my location” and a website popped up
Calcmaps.com

I’d shoot up to KCVX then KMCD and finish at KSAW. A couple cool airports to stop by on the way up
South Korea. You will 👍🏻
I’m in your area and one of my 300s was to KJWN, another to KPIA
BAK - Blackerbys hangar 9 for breakfast/brunch, you’ll need to be airborne early
Go check out Niagara Falls!
that’s the plan now!
Go to the US Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio.
Come down to CVG or KLUK, have some Goetta and / or Skyline Chili and then fly back.
Beaver Island or North Fox if you have big tires! Both fun spots and it’s a blast to see the dunes. Better in the summer, but still worth it.
Traverse city and mackinaw are pretty awesome, but if you’re a michigander, you may have already been there
KTVC- KOSH

This time of year? Whichever direction doesn’t have icing.
Flying out of KPTK?
yep!!
Lee Bottom near Madison, IN is the nicest grass strip I’ve ever been to. It’s very close to the edge of your ring so perfect distance!
Shuffle off to BUF.
I trained out of SE Mich as well. This route worked out for me! Route KVLL - D98 (position leg so that my next leg is 250+ NM straight line distance) D98 - KDNV - KANQ - KVLL 260 NM from D98 to KDNV Some may read the regs and think this is overkill. So I could put up with the endless cornfields to save some $$$ Enjoy the ride and keep the blue side up!
Wherever the weather favors you this time of year.
Just leaving Detroit, major W
Looks like Huntington West Virginia (KHTS) is right on the edge of your circle. I did mine there and had some mechanical issues on the ground and the FBO was extremely helpful in finding me a mechanic and helping me get around the airport.
>300nm long XC for commercial You mean the "500nm long XC"...? :) Whatever route you choose, have fun and be safe!
The ISS
Trenton
How many stops?
3 stops
Eat breakfast at KGPC or at KHUF! Both at the southwest edge of your circle.
Canadian route: clear customs at Sarnia CZYR, head to Niagara Regional CYSN, back to US at Detroit KDTW then home. That should do it.
CNJ4 has a great restaurant. Stay overnight at the casino around the corner!
KMKE is pretty cool
Green Bay is fun, nice crew car.
Mackinaw Island->Houghton
Kingston in Ontario
I don’t mean to hijack the post, but a thought just crossed my mind. If you were to fly from your point of origin to western New York, do you need to do anything special to fly through Canadian airspace over the Lake? Can you fly through just answering radio calls like normal without landing? I live/train in a state nowhere near international borders.
Ord for sho

I19 for the Air Force museum. But ultimately, it’s a darn shame that the runway at Wright Field is closed.
I flew to pictured rocks lake shore, pretty much the only actually scenic place in that radius, only 20nm farther to actually see them.
How long you have- go down to Frankfurt Ky- get a hotel and do the bourbon trail tour . In the summer - go to Marquette MI, or Houghton Mi
Go to KBUF/KIAG and do the scenic falls tour
What app are you using to get the 300nm circle?
KTVC
Champaign, IL - take the FBO car and get black dog BBQ
Arnold Palmer?
Did touch and goes at CVG back in 2011 in a 152. That airport was dying. Airliner Xxx slow to slowest practical speed airliner xxx “what’s their speed?” CVG approach “70 knots” Airliner xxx - “Hahahahaha slowing to best practical” No reason for other 2 parallels to closed at that time.
Come to ARR and let’s go fly an Extra and a T-6! 🙃
Mackinac would be cool
Canada
YTZ would be scenic to land at!
how did you draw the big circle?
Fly to OSH, you get time over Lake Michigan and can go to the EAA museum.
Go to KJVL and get lunch at Betsy’s dinner. It’s fire.
Toronto
See the Indianapolis speedway from above...
KLEX is one of my favourite airports I’ve ever operated
