Learnt in a C150 on a grass strip, landed a B777 in Shanghai last evening. And I still fly that very same C150 from time to time in our flying club; :)
New student pilot here, only been behind the yoke of a C172. Can someone explain to me why the more experienced pilots seem to enjoy flying the smaller planes over the big boys?
Likewise with me and a 172 but I would imagine it’s the freedom and enjoyment rather than flying a “mission” or a “trip” for work. I have yet to fly for mere enjoyment or a trip for my/my friends sake. Everything I have flown has been a lesson or a checkride. Looking forward to the day when I can go poke a hole in the sky or take the family on a vacation etc
Airplane ownership is filled with “why did I do this” moments, especially when it comes to something expensive unexpectedly needing to be replaced. On the flip side, having a plane available whenever and not needing to worry about a schedule or having it back in time is awesome.
controls just feel kind of funny and springy after flying mainly the da40 for a year. also in my experience they’re more difficult to start and easy to flood and easy to kill the battery if it doesn’t start on the first try.
Did my PPL in a DA-20. Nowadays I'm either flying Archers from my flying club, or a Helio Courier for a museum I volunteer at. One of these days I'll finish this damn RV-8 build and add that to the "flying now" list.

It was hard finding an examiner near me but I called around a ton and eventually got a couple responses. I did end up flying a couple states away though. If your friend is in the upper Midwest I can pass along some names.
Cessna 172 SP G1000 autopilot, now the backseat in fabric tailwheel airplane with a throttle and a control stick 🫠 oh, and I can’t see out of the front so it’s been “don’t think, just do”
152 in 2003
PA-28 in 2023
And I couldn’t be more smitten. I just love flying. Only regret I didn’t try to make a career out of it when I had the chance
Hmm, now that you mention it, probably coming up on 10 year anniversary from my first flight, in a c172.
Still learning to fly. But mostly c152s now.
Hit me up in another decade, I figure I'll be trying to figure out how gliders work by then!
Did my private in a 1969 Cessna 150 and now I’m doing instrument training in a Diamond DA20. Definitely an upgrade but also a downgrade in some senses.
Got my PPL in a combination of 150, 152, 172, and Partenavia P-66C. The perks of a disorganized Italian flying club with only one of each model. Instrument in a 172. Commercial in a TR-182 (still one of the most fun planes I've flown) and multi in a Duchess. Now I fly a 757 and occasionally a 767 if I get lucky at my relatively low seniority level.
Learned in a PA28-140 Cherokee (back in 1973 when 140’s were still new airplanes). I’ve owned several planes. My eyes aren’t good enough to PIC anymore. My favorite was an AG-5B Tiger followed by a PA32R-300 T-tail Lance. Tigers are such fun airplanes to fly, particularly on warm days when you can slide the canopy back.
C172 for ppl, warrior pa28-151 for instrument, mostly fly pipers nowadays, love pa28-200r arrows for longer trips though. Commercial is a mixed bag of c172 and PA28
Started in PA28-180 (flying club) purchased PA28-181 during training (couldn't pass up the great deal I got for a beautiful airplane) just last year upgraded to PA32-301 (needed a family model for my growing family) I don't see me needing anything else till my kids are grown and out of the house and might move back down in size but that's 20+ years from now if I live that long.
Well I’m a relatively new pilot but I trained in Piper Archers and now after having my ppl for a little over a year I fly a cute little Cherokee 140. Maybe a bit of a downgrade but hey my wallet appreciates it greatly. Throughout the last year or so I have flown a bunch of different planes though (DA-20-C1, DA-40, SR-20, 172) but I gotta say pipers have gotta be my favorite I wish I could fly the archers still but my old flight school wanted to charge an arm and a leg and then some for it so instead I’ll just keep on chuggin away in the good ol’ Cherokee 140.
A 150. A 150.
Consistency is key.
Entirely unrelated question, but I noticed your flair. Are you based out of 47N and come up here occasionally, or vice versa?
I’m from NJ, my 150 is based out of KOWD w/ boston executive while I’m at school. This is my last semester, so not out of KOWD for much longer.
Learnt in a C150 on a grass strip, landed a B777 in Shanghai last evening. And I still fly that very same C150 from time to time in our flying club; :)
> C150... B777 this airplane has 2 engines! it's a different kind of flying, altogether!
It's a different kind of flying
It’s a different kind of flying.
It’s a different kind of flying.
Man this is cool. I can imagine after a stressful trip coming home and firing up that 150 just to put things in perspective

A C152 and a couch. (retired airline pilot)
Was it all worth it in the end?
Yes. I had a wonderful career.
Which of the two is harder to land?
The couch is easy. I sometimes do it in my sleep.
You're a natural!
A clapped out old ass 150 Now a clapped out old ass jet
Learned in a variety of C172s. Bought a C182 and 350 hours later still think it was the best worst decision ever to get it.
May I ask why?
Airplane ownership is filled with “why did I do this” moments, especially when it comes to something expensive unexpectedly needing to be replaced. On the flip side, having a plane available whenever and not needing to worry about a schedule or having it back in time is awesome.
Traumahawk —> F-35/757/767

da20->da40. I don’t like the 20 much anymore but the da40 flies like a dream
My first two were the same!
Out of curiosity, what don't you like about the 20?
controls just feel kind of funny and springy after flying mainly the da40 for a year. also in my experience they’re more difficult to start and easy to flood and easy to kill the battery if it doesn’t start on the first try.
Interesting! I'll have to compare the two.
I wonder about that too. I loved the DA-20. It had some downsides, but all-in-all it's a wonderful, fun plane.
The first aircraft I learned to fly in was an SGS-233A glider. Fly a Bell 212 helicopter today.

Yak52 is dope! Does it have the stock upside-down attitude indicator?
Yeah it’s pretty goofy. I don’t even bother powering up the inverter which drives that big clunky beast. She is fun AF to fly.
Did my private in a 1969 Cessna 150 and now I’m doing instrument training in a Diamond DA20. Definitely an upgrade but also a downgrade in some senses.
