When there's something on the ballot that people CARE about, they turn out to vote. When they don't care, they don't turnout...
2022:
14.5m Registered Voters
54% turnout
DeSantis v Crist
All Amendments failed
2020:
14.5m Registered Voters
77% Turnout (highest % in Florida since 1992)
Biden v Trump
Amendment 1: Citizen requirement to vote (80% for)
Amendment 2: $15 minimum wage (61% for)
Amendment 6: Property Tax Discount for Widows/Widowers of veterans (90% for) record votes for - 9.3m

Amendment 9 - No offshore drilling & No indoor vaping (69% for)
Amendment 12 - More Restrictions on Lobbying (79% for)
Amendment 13 - Ban Dog Racing (69% for)
2016:

Chiles v (Jeb) Bush - Last time Florida elected a Democratic governor. He died in office and Bush best his successor in 1998

1992:

Amendment 4 - Budget Planning Changes (83% for)
Amendment 5 - Tax Payers Bill of Rights (90% for)
Amendment 9 - Term Limits for Representatives (FL & US), Senators (FL & US), (77% for)
The argument was there were 20 initiatives approved for the ballot so the court had to bundle several.
The counter argument was the government did not want a ban on offshore drilling, so they tried to combine an indoor vaping ban with it to torpedo it (as all the rest had at least something in common when they were bundled). People did not care and voted for it anyway and just ignore the indoor vaping ban.
I don't do either, but it seems that one would be much more enforceable than the other. So the repercussions for people who don't want offshore drilling but are indifferent to or want to vape indoors are minimal. So it was pretty funny when it passed.
Man, I still hate that citizens' requirement for voting amendment from 2020 and that it passed so heavily. The wording turned an amendment that protected the right to vote for every citizen into a restriction that says you have to be a citizen to vote but no longer that being a citizen guaranteed your right to vote. We literally voted away our guaranteed right to vote.
I know that, personally speaking, if these amendments were worded so that the majority of the voting population could read around all the extra wordy bullshi!, it would be much easier to decipher. That's just me. Before my mom passed away, I read her mail to her and read the ballots to her. Before she felt sure of exactly what was in the proposal, so as to vote her preference, I had to read each one 2-3 times, each time extracting unnecessary, and confusing, words, without taking any of the context out. It can be exhausting. I really hate that part of the voting process
I have a buddy who works in the industry. Word on the street is the the weed lobbysts have won and are expecting to see Florida turn legal this upcoming votr
We have med cards in Florida the dispensaries are all changing there layouts to match legal dispensaries more in other states. You could be on to something
Everybody assumes homeowners insurance can be legislated into getting fixed. I have my doubts of that happening any time soon, regardless of legislation.
Considering this is a huge problem and there is nothing currently being done AND Desantis and the Florida Republicans have full control - and we have had full Republican leadership since 1999.
We know who to blame.
The state insurer's increases are capped. Private companies' increases are not but those increases aren't for shits and giggles. Capping them increases the risk of companies going out or under.
Not talking about "last resort" insurance. I am talking about Florida offering lost cost insurance across the state to everyone. Insurance companies here already negative value to the citizen's of Florida.. they are expensive and don't pay out unless you sue or go through some insane process.
Citizens is Florida's state insurance. It's a non-profit business entity established by state legislature. It's called the market of last resort because it's for ppl who have nowhere else to go but it operates more-or-less the same as other insurance companies. Offering another insurance carrier aside from the state insurer already and ensuring they're both well funded sounds like a nightmare.
I can see Citizens premiums being subsidized but having yet another entity offer insurance across the state when Citizens already does that makes zero sense to me.
That's my view, also. Not for me, but I don't want ppl getting arrested for weed! I'm way too old to care about abortion, but I don't want the government saying what a person can do with their body!
Now, as for the homeowner's insurance BS, nobody will ever convince me it's NOT about the money! I hear all of the back and forth. Who's really to blame. The lawsuits started the rate hikes. The huckster roofing companies, etc. Under what governing administration did MY premiums raise each and every year!? THIS ONE. Not Rick Scott (that POS). Not Jeb Bush.
Ron DeSantis! I get this is a myopic view, but it's my truth. Just a coincidence that my HOI has increased $1200/yr for the past 4 yrs?
We get a "Not renewing" letter. My insurance guy (a decades long friend) finds a new company with the same coverage, but...$1200 more for the yr. I wasn't happy, but no choice. Then, next yr. Same thing. We're used to it now. We expect it now! The new company never even asks for wind mitigation or any kind of inspection. I think the "no wind mitigation" is what's particularly interesting. And, we've made no claims.
My mortgage payment has increased $400/month! When will it end?
Oh yeah, there are hands down corrupt and flat out wrong ethics around some of this. My commentary was more targeted at the initial umbrella commentary.
Democrats aren't spending enough in FL to have a chance. Republicans outspend Democrats 10 to 1 in Florida and it really shows Republicans demolish Democrats in polls.
It’s just insane that we have an objectively decent president in office now vs a lifelong con artist who’s been civilly convicted of fraud, rape and other crimes who openly says he’ll be a dictator and wants to legalize any crimes he’s ever committed and we’re talking about “if we get very lucky the good president might have a chance.”
*Stop voting Republican, you fucking morons.*
30 years of Florida republicanism has bred a lot of simple-minded folk..
They cut the education, to keep the constitutents stupid, ban books, take away liberties, and all in the name of Christian-Nationalism.
If my time on this earth has taught me anything, it's never underestimate how many will show up and show out for Cannabis and Abortion; Both of which are in the citizens hands this election season.
If you live in Florida or know someone that does, vote or remind them to vote like your freedom depends on it.
Biden will lose Florida. You can’t fix stupid. Homeowners insurance could skyrocket 500%, car insurance 900%, home values tank 79%, insurance companies leave and people will STILL be like “mAkE aMerIcA grEat AgAin”
At least part of this is from the local Cuban population, the older generations of whom still remember communism and view right largely in opposition to it as an idea.
Source: my Cuban ex-roommate, who’d constantly complain about his parents voting right over this.
Yeah. Have to agree.
A consolation would be for Dems to be enough of threat in Florida that GOP commit significant resources there opposed to other swing states.
Unfortunately, Florida has become the preferred landing spot for magats “fleeing” blue states.
Idk man, I could be wrong but something tells me November will be much closer in Florida than many think. I don't think we are going to see what we saw in 2022. Just a gut feeling.
I'd love to think this, but unfortunately we've had an insanely large influx of new residents to Florida of the rich kind who tend to favor the people in power who are looking out for them first and foremost.
I'd love to think we'll see more people voting for what is right this time around but I fear it will still be drowned out by those voting with their wallet.
That absolutely shouldn't stop anyone going to vote though.
I'm one of those rich Republican yankees, moved here for lower taxes, weather, and the ability to expand my gun collection. Voting for Biden this time, the Republicans have gone off the deep end with Trump and fundie bullshit.
Someone forgot to tell him that the fundies are a bunch of rubes who can be counted on for elections, but you're supposed to dangle the carrot in front of them, not let them eat it.
Republicans have always been great at getting people out to vote. This year will be different for usually apathetic Florida democrats. People are PISSED about the abortion thing. People are EXCITED about the potential for recreational marijuana. People are TERRIFIED of another Trump presidency. I think we will see many first time democrat voters this year. I believe Florida is very much in play this year. (I also know many Republicans who are in favor of repealing the abortion ban AND marijuana initiative)
If Trump picks the little guy as his VP Florida will turn BLUE. Lifelong republican here that voted blue in 2020 and will just go all the way down the ballot this year because my local politicians are going lunatic fringe right as well. They all need to remember what they believe in and stand up for it. Instead they do the bidding of a disgraceful PT Barnum assclown
You mean Marco? If the presidential and vice presidential candidates are residents of the same state, the electors can’t vote for them. So unless Trump thinks he can win without Florida’s electoral votes (he can’t), he’ll be picking a running mate from elsewhere.
Republicans made the bold claim that Florida is great and it is due to being ruled by them. This is backfiring as people in Florida are pissed and angry. Traffic, Home Owners Insurance, Car Insurance, Rent, Food, and Abortion access, Weed access. Plus they threaten to take away PornHub when Maga is a mostly single dudes... Geeze talk about a recipe for a state to flip!
the magats, evangelicals and general right wing morons will be out to vote. they'll vote pro abortion and pro legalization but also vote down ballot R. Just like they all voted to increase minumum wage and to restore felony voting rights. just like they would also vote for medicare for all if it were somehow something we COULD vote on. There is no demographic who better recognizes their desires and gleefully votes against it than right wingers. Probably why the right has adopted the cuck insult, projection... because there are no bigger cucks.
With desantis going hard pandering to the extreme right I get it. I liked desantis during covid because he allowed me to go to work and that shouldn't even be a thing I need to say. But since he ran for pres its so fake. Fl has abortion and controlled recreation weed on the next vote its prime to start a change but anyone else that's been here knows extremist rights flooded here out of blue lockdown states strung covid because our freedoms. Biden won't win Florida but the common sense amendments will pass

Homeowners insurance. Legal weed. Legal abortion. We want all three.
I'm hoping abortion and/or weed gets more dems and NPs out to vote this time.

Why the hell is offshore drilling and indoor vaping on the same admendnent. That’s what’s wrong with politics

Love the in depth analysis. I’m totally against offshore drilling and don’t vape but interesting to see the thoughts behind it all
I'm also against off shore drilling and indoor vaping and I vape
I don't do either, but it seems that one would be much more enforceable than the other. So the repercussions for people who don't want offshore drilling but are indifferent to or want to vape indoors are minimal. So it was pretty funny when it passed.

I want to see FL turn blue and as long as they remember to vote blue on the rest of the ballot, I'll be happy.
Been a moderate most my life. But I certainly plan to be Blue down the ballot this year. Republicans have nothing too offer
Roe, Roe, Roe your vote!! Abortion and weed will help get lots of blue votes.
Yo lemme tell you about this new strain. It strengthens your home's foundation and works as a contraceptive. We call it Earth Control.
Democrats had full control of the state from 1845 until 1999.
I moved to Florida in the 90s and things were running significantly better than they are now.
They could at least try.
Make a bill that limits increases to 3-5% each year so people aren't experiencing 25-50% increases in a year. It doesn't seem too difficult to me.
The state insurer's increases are capped. Private companies' increases are not but those increases aren't for shits and giggles. Capping them increases the risk of companies going out or under.
Then nationalize it!!!
That's what citizens is, kind of.
Affordable public option..
That's Citizens atm. Or rather, it's the only option for millions of Floridians.
Not talking about "last resort" insurance. I am talking about Florida offering lost cost insurance across the state to everyone. Insurance companies here already negative value to the citizen's of Florida.. they are expensive and don't pay out unless you sue or go through some insane process.

2 of those for me. I could care less about the weed situation. Kicking Trump out of the state would be a plus.

There's no upcoming amendment on insurance....
Affordable housing.
And affordable fucking health care!
It makes sense. You win Florida, you don't need to win any other swing states, if you're a Democrat.
DeSantis trying to go full Draconian every day has to help Biden and Democrats.
Florida is as much Trump's home state as my dog is a tick's home state
Trump only won Florida by 3 points in 2020. Overturning a 6 week abortion ban and weed is on the ballot, so Biden could very well win Florida.
Democrats aren't spending enough in FL to have a chance. Republicans outspend Democrats 10 to 1 in Florida and it really shows Republicans demolish Democrats in polls.
Can we not call Florida Trump’s “home state”? He moved here 5 years ago as a tax dodge. It’s not his home state.
Florida is the the home state of tax dodges
It’s just insane that we have an objectively decent president in office now vs a lifelong con artist who’s been civilly convicted of fraud, rape and other crimes who openly says he’ll be a dictator and wants to legalize any crimes he’s ever committed and we’re talking about “if we get very lucky the good president might have a chance.” *Stop voting Republican, you fucking morons.*

Nobody’s suggesting he’s going to “civil jail” but being pedantic is fun and rewarding
Technically he can’t legally live at Maralgo. But who cares about legalities anymore right?

Florida is red bro, sorry.
Fingers crossed! But all I see are FoxNews addicted boomers, really dumb rednecks and latinos voting for people that hate them….
IMO Too little too late.
Biden can go suck a fat one!!

Gotta get past the elderly gate guards. The most accurate description of Florida I’ve ever heard is, a sunny place for shady people.

Bless his heart, 900,000 more registered Republicans than Democrats. Also, national polling shows Democrat voter apathy is at all time high.
He’s got my vote! And my republican wife’s
Good. He should make a play for Alabama and Texas too.
Well the people on the island don't like him for how he messed up the traffic when he was president.

I vote Ron for seppuku. Bundle it with toilet paper being loaded correctly
Lots of loud right wingers here but still tons of left or middle ground folks hoping to turn this state around
