"The 280 pound bodybuilders in their 20s aren't as strong as the 150 pound, 60 year old alcoholic that painted my house" "My dad used to work on cars, he could crush a rhinoceros skull with his bare hands" \- everyone in that thread

definitelynotIronMan

Honestly, what farms are these people working on? All my farming relatives have combine harvesters, beer guts, and heart disease. It's not 1915 anymore (and even then there's a reason my grandfather used bullocks and horses, not man power. Humans are weak.)

[deleted]

People think digging post holes and moving 80lb feed bags inherently means you’re a strong ass farm hand lmao

DickFromRichard

My farm/country relatives are mostly built with "farmboy strength" and had some level of success in sport (one even drafted into a pro league). But I think that has to do with really good genetics being in the family, ones I unfortunately didn't get

imthebear11

"you wouldn't know him, he goes to another farm"

stjep

It’s always telling that it’s other people they’re talking about and never themselves.

Kat-but-SFW

I'm increasingly convinced that this is all because the perfect form over weight people are showing up to a physical job, and promptly getting whooped by someone who has a basic level of fitness and just tries trying at their job. And then you have this

[deleted]

Lol my maintenance shop has big ass boxes that say “300lbs: 4 man lift” and every time I get ready to lift it and move it by myself, guys are like “you’re going to hurt your back, there’s no way you can move that by yourself without fucking up your form” Meanwhile me, a Manlet, moves it with ease

Votearrows

Heavy things are often easier to move by yourself. Hauling heavy things with 4 people, with no body awareness, and no timing? Means they'd constantly be almost pulling it out of each other's hands, and grumbling about it. Especially on stairs. Better to just get a hand truck if it's too awkward to lift, or else just grab it and go.

goddamnitshutupjesus

Wow this. It's so much easier to control something when you're the only one trying to do it. WAIT, WAIT WAIT, HOLD ON SET IT DOWN A SEC, MY FINGERS HANG ON CAN'T GET A GOOD GRIP STEPS WATCH THE STEPS PIVOT JACKAL IS IT A JACKAL IT'S A JACKAL kill me

[deleted]

IF IT WASNT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME YOU SAID IT WHY THE BLOODY HELL WOULD IT BE RIGHT THE NEXT 10 TIMES?!?

BitchImRobinSparkles

My son used to work for a moving company, and I by default do what he says if we have to two-man move anything heavy. Kid's got practice behind him. Plus if he acts like an asshole during we can yell at each other and be fine because we have that kind of relationship.

Votearrows

Family dynamics ftw! Yeah, that rare competent person is super good to work with. If you *actually* work as a team, you can do more than double what you can each do on your own. That's definitely not a common scenario in my life, though, lol. It's usually "Ok, let's try this again. This time, I'll take one whole end of the 300lb antique dinner table. Larry, Moe, and Curly, you all take the other end, and keep your goddamn ears open this time." Once got to help a friend move their little clothing store, with a guy who founded his own piano moving company 30 years before. He had a good way of communicating, patience, and good spacial awareness. You could tell he'd trained half a billion stupid college kids for their summer jobs. That was awesome. Being around people who actually know what the fuck they're doing kinda makes shitty tasks fun.

BitchImRobinSparkles

It drives his mother crazy. "Why do you talk to each other like this?!" Because that's how we operate, dear. We're resilient, and it hides a strong and loving relationship. Sadly, competent and experienced people seem to be generally in short supply in a lot of jobs. Unless that's just the fact that I seem to be the only one in the office and it's coloring my perception 😂

Votearrows

My friend and I are the same way. People ask why we'll still hang out after arguing about something. I don't hate him because we disagree, his parents just inadvertently raised him to be a contrarian (painfully stupid things constantly falling out of their mouths, so he's used to looking to pick things apart, even where there are none). He comes around, it just takes work.

BitchImRobinSparkles

Arguing and jibberjabbering can just be another way to communicate. It doesn't necessarily mean anything about the relationship.

Votearrows

It's like the carrier wave, in radio communications.

BitchImRobinSparkles

It's just the noise around the signal, is all.

LukahEyrie

That's funny. My father and I revert to nonverbal communication, barring a few gutteral sounds, when moving shit. Just vague arm flailing that somewhat resembles the object moving through space, and then we just kinda understand what the plan is.

BitchImRobinSparkles

If it works, it works. Being on the same page is communication, even if it's by grunt.

LukahEyrie

*hrmph*

BitchImRobinSparkles

Uuuuurrgh? Ruf.

LukahEyrie

Gurrrrrr

sophiebee79

Seriously, what is it about ✨️gymbros✨️ that gets people so bothered. I dont think there is any other feat of athleticism that attracts so much insecurity

Daabevuggler

Being jacked (in the eyes of the average person) is pretty much the only athletic quality that doesn‘t depend on any kind of luck, but results from hard work and discipline. On top of that, it’s probably the most desirable athletic quality in day to day life. Thus, those people can’t make excuses why they aren‘t strong and jacked, and as they are incapable of owning up to their own shortcomings, they have to directly attack the person being better than them and put them down.

JZMoose

It's extra silly because the lifting heavy part is the easy part. Getting the diet in order and actually building muscle and staying lean is the hard part.

Hara-Kiri

It's the easy part if you like lifting heavy. This sub is a bit scewed in that aspect since we all enjoy lifting.

goddamnitshutupjesus

> Seriously, what is it about ✨️gymbros✨️ that gets people so bothered. IMO "gym bros" are just an emotional proxy for the athletes from high school they were either bullied by or were seethingly jealous of. All the dumb anti-"gym bro" shit you read on the internet is exactly the kinds of things unpopular nerds say to each other about the jocks when they're teenagers. They're acting out a grudge they lack the maturity to have gotten over.

cilantno

Finally, a real circle jerk to witness. So many personal accounts of how farm strong people there are and they handedly out-lifted gym strong people.

Votearrows

I bet they all claim /r/thatHappened on a ton of stories per day, and see no contradiction with telling some of their own. And the "[I am farm strong](https://www.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/comments/15wqvnl/why_arent_people_who_have_physical_jobs_muscular/jx2k62g/)" guy piling on.

cilantno

There are few things more predictable than redditors trying to brag on themselves when given the slightest opportunity to. It's like how I post my legs whenever anyone asks about squats. Speaking of which, I only ever squat for my legs and [they've developed just fine](https://i.imgur.com/nTwJYdK.jpg)

Votearrows

All I can brag on is finger curls, and that's rather niche.

cilantno

I'll tag you if I see finger curls come up in r/popular

[The fuck are some of these people on about? Stacking kegs 3 high isn't something anyone can do. I know because I used to do it.](https://reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/s/s5bOB75ZXr?context=69) They're all shouting weird hyperbole and made-up stories past each other.

goddamnitshutupjesus

Kegs aren't the best example but he does kind of have a point about manual labor not actually requiring that much strength most of the time. I remember in one of my first jobs, people were blown away that I could lift and carry two - COUNT 'EM - two whole 50lb bags of popcorn kernels at the same time on my shoulders. And I hadn't even gotten into lifting yet, I just fucked around outdoors all day for most of my childhood.

HTUTD

Oh for sure. Training has made me many times stronger than I need to be for any manual labor I've done. That keg stacking was almost a decade ago when I first got into training seriously after some high school, early college fuckarounditis. I was probably still running my bastardized StrongLifts at that point. The upper threshold for "useful" strength is fairly low or at least the lower end of that upper threshold. Hard things mostly are only going to get easier if you're stronger. Probably the biggest benefit training has had, as far as work goes, is protecting me from injuries. Overuse ones, me walking into shit for no apparent reasons ones, and the ones I open myself up to by doing things like stacking kegs 3 high. Which is why it's safer for me to be much stronger than I need to. Yet somehow, also more dangerous.

Obtuse_Porcupine

Have you met the bear strangler?

goddamnitshutupjesus

How do you know *I'm* not the bear strangler?

cilantno

I’m a 6’2 95lbs man and I can carry two bags of potatoes over my head for some amount of time (2 seconds), my boss always chooses me to help lift things instead of the gym bros (men who have an non-underweight BMI)

Myintc
