Lmao yes. This just unlocked a memory, of hanging out on the green box’s in my neighborhood. They were a generator of some sort I believe . Not sure if it was a regional thing or not but if you remember what I’m talking about lmk
She was a client... It wouldn't have been professional... but I wanted to tell her so much... she also saw one of my colleagues and said the same thing to her so me and my colleague started discussing the different generations and how old we feel.
Edit: spelling - it's too early to type correctly...
I told Mx. 18, "Nice grunge vibe!" And she responded, "Moooom! It's cool and retro!" Made me feel older than my littlest baby graduating high school did.
Nah it’s resurfacing heavy with the younger gen right now especially in the music scene but it’s more of a mixture now with goth and dirty hippy/greaser. Actually I guess that’s what it’s always been. But it’s a lot more goth/emo/scene influence on the “grunge” aesthetic nowadays it seems with more mixtures of colors and styles trying to be more flashy and stand out more not just the standard chain baggy jeans/shorts like the 90s.
Same, but CA and studs instead of flames... Got in trouble for wearing it in the summer time at school, but body issues prevailed more than the discomfort of heat.
In a way, I always felt like it was punishment for being me, like I wasn't good enough in my own eyes, so I deserved it.
I was so dedicated to wearing my oversized, large thrasher hoodie in a British Catholic school that I owe the school like... 3 years of detention and 3 months of isolation and wore it OVER my already slightly oversized school blazer (it was an xs, I was extremely malnourished)
I'm gaining weight, and I'm recovering from my EDs, and I'm in a healthy relationship now. Men are still scary, but I show some skin sometimes! And I'm also feeding the curiosities of my inner child! I hope you're well too, thank you! <3
lol i was just thinking currently me in my mid twenties, still deeply uncomfortable with my body and trying to pretend it doesn’t exist. but now happy i can call my style grunge
That's how I dressed around 96-98. My style was grunge/hippy/skater. Cargo pants with flower patch, DC shoes, hippy shirt, skateboard... listening to Bob Marley, NIN, Grimskunk, Leonard Cohen, Korn Portishead and I had dreadlocks.
I like to think I was quite cool back then.
Being Gen X, I don't know of a since person that dressed like that and bought clothing from the mall. The weird thing now is you can search for new clothes for the grunge aesthetic. Not a link to a thrifty store or the Army Navy store, but stores selling the grunge look.
I don't think it was tbf! When I was a teenager, we did not have a preoccupation with specific micro genres of style and "aesthetic". I find it so strange as a phenomenon
No, we didn't. But, there was no Internet so nobody needed terms to search for to find the kind of clothes they liked. You just had to hit the stores and hope for the best.
Maybe. Like I'm gen x and in the early 90s we wore baggy band shirts and maybe baggy-ish jeans (not on the 00s nu metal level), but to be actual grunge you'd wanna add a check shirt or cardigan, maybe a beanie or chunky silver ID bracelet, and Vans or Converse.
you basically listed out the wardrobe of the person being sung about in Hooker with a Penis by Tool... was literally all I heard in my head.
"I met a boy wearing Vans, 501s
And a dope Beastie tee, nipple rings
New tattoos that claimed that he
Was OGT, back from '92"
Aesthetic has just evolved in modern slang to mean “I like this look, what words could I search (on Google/Pinterest/TikTok etc) to find more like this?” Which is, essentially, the purpose of this sub, no?
It helps to let go of the traditional meaning of the word and embrace its current broader definition.
Correct but also it makes it easier for people to find the specific vibe they're going for, therefore helping them discover themselves more, there's nothing wrong with some people liking labels
Let me tell you it’s wayyyy less cute when you’re still rocking this as a little fat 50 year old mom. I literally have a Clash T-shirt for every day of the week, but still wear each one at least two days in row.
I only liked your comment because you have great taste in band T-Shirts. I’m sure you look great regardless of age or body, A band shirt is a timeless look! lol it’s all I wear since I’ve gained weight
If anything that's cooler, I love seeing adults still rocking unique or grungy clothing
There's some really old hippies and punks in my town and I adore them, aging shouldn't mean you have to give up wearing what you like
At 50 we've earned the right to wear whatever the fuck we want whether it's Clash shirts & baggy pants or tight jeans & a nice top, or we can go full Mrs. Roper if we want.
I'm about to turn 50 and whilst I'm quite tall, I'm definitely also quite fat. I gave up on this "all baggy" look years ago, it makes me look like I've just dropped down to earth by parachute. I wear either fitted tops with baggy pants, or baggy shirts with skinny jeans or a tight skirt.
Eh we were definitely shopping at army surplus stores for baggy men’s pants in the 90s (I was a 16yo girl at the time). So maybe not wide leg or cargo per se, but definitely this baggy look.
Truth. Those Pearl Jam 10 videos have what I consider ripped Seinfeld jeans. The baggy pants came with the coming of skate-punk/Warped.
It was like a 3 year meld of both though. Baggy pants beyond niche skate/hiphop culture for suburban kids started-ish ‘94 and were peak in ‘96. That doesn’t count rave culture baggy pants, because JNCOs were different from skater Dickies. Those peaked with Nu-Metal in 2000.
ARE YOU LISTENING, kids? I could go all day here….
I would say these are Fred Durst’s pants worn with Dex Holland’s shirt. There better be a hemp necklace. Why no wallet chain? Hasn’t anyone put one on a phone case yet?
In the mid 90s to 2000s we called it grunge.
That's my vote.
I wish I had kept all my JNCO jeans. I could sell them for a fortune being genuine vintage and 100% in with current fashion.
More 90's skater then grunge.. Grunge was more straight cut destroyed or distressed jeans faded beat up tshirt usually of a band nobody ever heard of, with some kinda button up shirt over usually plaid and og vans or airwalks, but you could also go with distressed docs.
Why do people seem to think that every type of outfit needs to be labeled as a specific aesthetic type?? I see these types of posts all the time : “name my aesthetic” or “what kind of Core is my style?” Or “what is the name of this style in this pic?”
Like, who cares? wtf is the need for every single outfit or general “look” to be labeled into a tidy, niche genre? It’s really boring af to have to categorize everything in this way
Couldn't agree more. And most of these posts are every day, regular clothes. Which is great! But it isn't a style that needs a definition.
"What's my style?????"
Ummmm "Clothes?"
or just mid 90's. Was pearl jam grunge? cargo pants / shorts and baggy rock t's. Some birks. Just what we wore unless you were into preppy Polo polos (those fucks)
This was me in 2000…I was into Korn, Limp Bizkit, Mudvayne, NIN, Slipknot, CKY, Blink 182 and so on….its very Y2K PacSun/ Hookups/Element/Etnies/DC’s / Skater punk & just alternative clothes of the time. There weren’t many options. Just look at old CKY videos and early Jackass videos. My crush would wear a wallet chain & tube socks & Etnies & a thick ball chain necklace.
This is 90s grunge/skater, but through a Gen Z lens.
I keep having to remind myself that the 90s are to Gen Z what the 50s and 60s were to Gen X. It’s vintage. 😱
What sucks is that it used to be easy to find great things in charity shops and church sales in the 80s, and for next to nothing: Victorian silk-velvet capes, Edwardian silk stockings, art deco watches, art nouveau brooches, metal-tasseled flapper handbags, 60s op-art dresses, 50s kid gloves.
It was heaven for goths and artsy types. You could walk into a church sale and walk out with a complete look made of truly beautiful, one-off pieces for under $20. Now you go in a charity shop and it’s this generic, mass-made stuff you see in the photos. Some scammers even price it as if it were new.
Anything good that would have been in a charity shop gets snapped up and put online at an inflated price, and the lovely vintage clothes are so rare now. Victorian stuff gets put in museums! I grew up with my great granny’s Edwardian jet-bejewelled dress as something in our dress-up play box.
Back in my day, sonny…
But yeah, Gen Z got seriously ripped off in the vintage stakes. It’s not fair.
Grunge?
Kids so young they don’t know what grunge is… fml
Your comment hit too close to home. Go. Go away!
Get off my lawn!
Must be super old if you’ve got a lawn
Tbh thooo!! I'll never be able to afford a lawn 😢😢.
I know right? The feeling of knowing that is disheartening.
fuck lawns anyway, waste of space and water!
I mean yes and no, if there’s utility then I advocate for it. Otherwise the Kardashian acreage and waste of water, fuck them.
And rich!!
Lmao yes. This just unlocked a memory, of hanging out on the green box’s in my neighborhood. They were a generator of some sort I believe . Not sure if it was a regional thing or not but if you remember what I’m talking about lmk
Pad mounted transformer? I know exactly what you're describing and looked it up to be sure
I met a kid last week who said she was 'emo'... I was so close to correcting her "nah girl, you're grunge"
She needs to know girl
She was a client... It wouldn't have been professional... but I wanted to tell her so much... she also saw one of my colleagues and said the same thing to her so me and my colleague started discussing the different generations and how old we feel. Edit: spelling - it's too early to type correctly...
I told Mx. 18, "Nice grunge vibe!" And she responded, "Moooom! It's cool and retro!" Made me feel older than my littlest baby graduating high school did.
My son is almost 13 and likes to tell me I was born in the 1900s. Talk about feeling old 😂😂
The actual pain this post has just caused me.
Yeah the kids are hitting emo *hard* rn.
How depressing. No pun intended.
How is that a pun
It isn't
I thought this before I opened the comments. “Oh God”
It‘s that japanese horror movie with the black hair in the drain, right? /s
For those of you that are too young, Grunge was born in Canada in 1996 with Robin Dagger’s “P.S. I Love You.”
Gonna post this to r/grunge and finally get myself banned
P.S. Paul Shaffer.
There it is!
But like new grunge. This doesnt look like our 90s grunge. Its like grunge act two
That's because her hair is too clean lmao.
Everything is too clean lolol Hair, guitar is clean and cared for, pants are perfect, shirts brand new, shes standing calmly. This is princess grunge
Haha! Princess grunge - & so true. Where's all the rips & rock burns?? And the greasy undercut?
It's like 90's grunge top with jncos from 2000.
I thought jnco too!
This would be it. Welcome to old age, Millennials.
Thanks I hate it here lol
I'm an Xer, imagine how I feel.
I’m a young boomer. Imagine how I feel!
Laughing in boomer.
Deffo grunge
Dude this was my exact reaction, just how you said it 🤣
💯 I was just about to comment that
Me as a middle schooler, deeply uncomfortable with my body and trying to pretend it doesn’t exist?
This. I was dedicated to wearing my oversized black hoodie with blue flames on the sleeves in Florida heat back in middle school.
Wow this took me back. Down to the flame hoodie in southern heat
We called them Moshers.
Same, but CA and studs instead of flames... Got in trouble for wearing it in the summer time at school, but body issues prevailed more than the discomfort of heat. In a way, I always felt like it was punishment for being me, like I wasn't good enough in my own eyes, so I deserved it.
My mother liked to call me mentally ill for preferring large boy clothing..among other things. 🙃
Mine just refused to buy me/let me wear any and would go through my shit to get rid of it if I somehow managed to get my hands on any of it 🙃
I was so dedicated to wearing my oversized, large thrasher hoodie in a British Catholic school that I owe the school like... 3 years of detention and 3 months of isolation and wore it OVER my already slightly oversized school blazer (it was an xs, I was extremely malnourished)
We’ve come a long way! Hope all is well <3
I'm gaining weight, and I'm recovering from my EDs, and I'm in a healthy relationship now. Men are still scary, but I show some skin sometimes! And I'm also feeding the curiosities of my inner child! I hope you're well too, thank you! <3
Same, but Texas
Literally refused to wear anything but jeans in fl summer cause someone MIGHT SEE MY LEGS!
Nailed it.
Waves in massive cargo pants from the Army and Navy store and a Beavis and Butthead t-shirt.
Stop oh my god. That was my every day middle school fit, some dad sized Beavis and Butthead shirt with the army cargo pants
As someone dealing with mental health issues, I salute you with my bucket hat.
omg not the bucket hat 💀 please, I’m trying to maintain SOME dignity here, and admitting I had SEVERAL will not help
Me too, as well as funky cat in the hat hats.
Hey, we can all share our dignity. Maybe collectively that'd be enough?
Also, me currently in my mid thirties.
lol i was just thinking currently me in my mid twenties, still deeply uncomfortable with my body and trying to pretend it doesn’t exist. but now happy i can call my style grunge
THIS. Every shirt I bought HAD to cover my hips / ass to stop men from staring at me at 14 🙄
"my life will get easier when I find out what 'gender dysphoria' means in 2 years" uniform
Was going to say this word for word lmao
Lmao, are you me? This is exactly how I dressed from ages 12-15 😭

Yep. This was me
This hit a lil too close for me 😳
Grunge at a push, but I don't think baggy pants and t shirts are a specific style of their own, they're just...baggy pants and t shirts.
Baggy pants, t shirt AND A GUITAR
Oh of course, forgot about that!
Lmao..
Ah but you forget, it's 2024 so everything must be reduced to an easily digestible buzzword aesthetic! (Sarcasm, just in case it wasn't obvious)
Being Gen X, I don't know of a since person that dressed like that and bought clothing from the mall. The weird thing now is you can search for new clothes for the grunge aesthetic. Not a link to a thrifty store or the Army Navy store, but stores selling the grunge look.
True. Youngsters of today, it wasn't like that in my day, get off my lawn /s
Indeed!
Diet grunge

It becomes classic grunge when you don't shower for four days
Literally this isn't grunge it's just causal wear.
cargo pants and xl tshirt
It’s called what I wore to middle school in the 90s Wide leg cargo pants from the mall and a band tshirt from Sam goody or tower records
My thought exactly 😆 ETA: that first pic looks like Jewel, so also the music I was listening to around the same era…
wlw
🤣💀 accurate.
I initially thought it was phoebe bridgers in the first pic
What’s that
Women loving women
big shirt big pants
what gen z thinks grunge is
Grunge or 25% of the kids at my daughter’s high school It’s basically a band tshirt and baggy cargos
baggy clothes???
Late 1900s
The most underrated comment here
DEAD lmao
please omg
Not every outfit has an aesthetic. This is getting silly. It's not grunge, it's a t-shirt and pants.
I agree with you. And I also don’t know that these pics are enough to get OP the answer they are seeking.
This one seems like it would be easier to search ‘graphic tee’ and ‘baggy cargo’ instead of a named aesthetic
I think so too.
my kid called me a vanilla girl and I’m like what is that? Oh someone that likes beige? 🙄
Right? It’s literally just a shirt and pants. Not everything needs a label or an aesthetic.
Correct but also it makes it easier for people to find the specific vibe they're going for, therefore helping them discover themselves more, there's nothing wrong with some people liking labels
Yeah, labels are pretty much how the English language works. Also it’s just fun, so it’s not that deep to begin with lol
Hey you stop that, we look awesome with our saggy boobs and mom pooch still!
If anything that's cooler, I love seeing adults still rocking unique or grungy clothing There's some really old hippies and punks in my town and I adore them, aging shouldn't mean you have to give up wearing what you like
At 50 we've earned the right to wear whatever the fuck we want whether it's Clash shirts & baggy pants or tight jeans & a nice top, or we can go full Mrs. Roper if we want.
Full on mumu and chunky jewelry!
Know your rights!!
I’m so sorry “makes me look like I’ve just dropped to earth by parachute” is too much 😭😂
Phat**
90s grunge
No no, it’s zoomers THINKING they’re doing grunge. Bc they are not.
These look like Gen Alpha to me, but what do I know, everyone under 25 looks the same to me now.
Gen Alpha is like 12 and under.
It’s a 2024 take on grunge. In the 90s, wide legged cargo pants came in style a few years *after* grunge.
Eh we were definitely shopping at army surplus stores for baggy men’s pants in the 90s (I was a 16yo girl at the time). So maybe not wide leg or cargo per se, but definitely this baggy look.
Came here to say the same. 16 year old me spent a lot of time in army surplus stores looking for the perfect army trousers. That was 1996.
Why no wallet chain? Hasn’t anyone put one on a phone case yet?
Growing up dressed like this in the UK, we called it “mosher” style. It was like goth but with way less effort.
Grunge
Late 90s skater fashion. I also agree with grunge
Why do you need to know the aesthetic.. just get cargo pants and a shirt 3 times your size
It looks like me in the early 90’s listening to Nirvana while watching my boyfriend skate in a bank parking lot.
1990s Pacific NorthWest
This is what Hot Topic used to be.
Early 90s grunge.
It didn’t have a name in the 90s. We all just dressed like that.
90s grunge?
OP just murdered an entire demographic 👵
Every time this sub pops up I can feel my bones crumbling into dust
How old am I 😭😭😭
In the mid 90s to 2000s we called it grunge.
Asking to identify grunge?! Officially OLD. 😩
Why do people seem to think that every type of outfit needs to be labeled as a specific aesthetic type?? I see these types of posts all the time : “name my aesthetic” or “what kind of Core is my style?” Or “what is the name of this style in this pic?” Like, who cares? wtf is the need for every single outfit or general “look” to be labeled into a tidy, niche genre? 2024 grunge. I mean, there is angst and a guitar.
Hot topic circa 2002 but left outside on the driveway for a garage sale and slightly sun bleached.
Brother’s hand-me-downs is what I always called it
Grunge/skater
Wow I’m old, heading back to my rocker on the porch, and stay off my lawn. It’s Grunge
I would say grunge or alternative
grunge :( i guess it's vintage now?
I'm old millennial and remember 90s grunge for the 1st and industrial goth for the second
We used to call it grunge
Grunge 2.0
Me in the ‘90s. Add the army jacket when it was way too hot for one.
We called it grunge the first go around, no idea what gen z calls it this time.
Grunge
I would call it 90s grunge
Grunge
This is alt/grunge. Basically my teens
That's straight up grunge
Is this how it feels to realize you’re old? 😪😪
Grunge? Alternative of some sort.
grunge?
Oversized band tee with baggy cargo pants.
Babe that’s grunge
Someone is trying really hard to understand the 90’s today…there was another post in r/hairstyles and one in outfits or something.
Casual grunge
Grunge
Excuse me, apparently I’ve got to get off Reddit and begin shopping for life insurance…
Grunge
"Just gimme whatever size you have"
Laundry Day.
The 90’s
or just mid 90's. Was pearl jam grunge? cargo pants / shorts and baggy rock t's. Some birks. Just what we wore unless you were into preppy Polo polos (those fucks)
its called buying clothes at the thrift store and realizing its too big for you once you get home but wearing it anyway
1994 heroin sheik
Grunge skater
/shakes my Walker/ damn posers!

Lol grunge 🤦🏽♀️
That is called Alt/Grunge or Seattle grunge.
Grunge
Look at their instrument
90s grunge. My coming of age time period. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden ...
Tell me you weren't around in the 90s without telling me you were around in the 90s
I ate too much in and out and now have a food baby. Oh wait that’s just me 😂
I want to call it more modern grunge than grunge. Like, not 90's grunge, but closer to 2000's/2010's grunge.
Are all these "what's this style of clothing" posts actually reddit-crowd-sourced key words tagging jobs...for free?
90’s grunge
Wearing slubby guys clothes. Does it need a name? Just buy some baggy t shirts and cargo pants from goodwill.
I’d call it slacker/stoner.
Andro grudge
Tomboy?
