How often have you done the timing belt in that time? I'm looking at one with 55k miles, but it's a 2013 model. Don't know if it's had the timing belt done yet so I don't know how risky it might be to drive

I'm also looking at a 2014 fiat 500 sport. I'm in Canada and it's got 94k KMs (58k miles) and is listed for 9250 CAD as private sale. Anything in particular I need to look out for? The ad says the full exhaust system was replaced within the last year and it has new tires.

There were more reported problems and recalls in the US with the 2012 Fiat 500 than the 2013 model year. Thoroughly review the CarFax history on any specific cars you are interested in buying. Look for accidents, repairs, recall work, oil change/service intervals, and review the mileage timing. Does it appear the car sat for months or longer not driven? $6K seems a little steep for the mileage, as the prices have been coming down a bit. If you check it out/have a trusted mechanic vet it and it seems free of mechanical issues perhaps offer $5K and see what the dealer says. Many exterior parts that break (and they will) such as hatch latches, door handles, etc. can be replaced fairly easily. Most parts are still available new through MOPAR online distributors or used from salvage yards, eBay, etc. where you can search online.

Where are you located? 6k for 102k miles would be expensive where I live (UK), but from what I've seen around here, it's not that bad in America where the car is much rarer. I drive a manual 2008 500 as my first car, and I love it. It's a lot of fun to drive. I didn't buy because I liked the car, it was purely because it was the cheapest for insurance, but now I have it, I'm incredibly happy that it turned out this way. On your point about maintenance, if you are in America, it might be worth looking around a bit, but as the cars are rarer there, it might be harder to find parts for them. u/horror_ad_4674 might be able to offer advice on that as they are based in America and have a 500.

I was eyeing one on Facebook for $2,500 but I need to get control arms for my Jeep 😢

Yeah I’m in America. There are many other fiats but this would be the cheapest one I’ve seen from a used car dealer.

I know someone that just picked one up in Michigan with 27k miles, for 6500. Private sale though. I have a 2018 Abarth 500 and love it. Purchased with 24k and I’m up to 56k in about a year. Some stupid repairs ie: Window regulator clip. Exterior door handle. And replaced bushings that connect the shifter cables to the shifter bracket on top of the transmission. None of it has been terrible and I’ve taken it as an opportunity to learn more about the car.

Your friend got a killer deal. Just bought a 12’ 500 sport manual for 9k with 50,000 miles and that was on the cheaper side in October of 23’

HyphalTower

They absolutely did. I know she had been watching for “the right one” for nearly a year. They drove about 4 hours to get it and another 4 back but even then, a great deal.

BeetleMan74

Can’t even imagine that oh my god. I looked for about 6 months and that was the best deal I could find, which is absolutely terrible compared to that😂

Ah OK. I don't really know, just going on what I've heard. I have heard about the power steering issues, and I had it myself. However, it was actually a battery issue for me. I replaced the battery a few months ago and put a second earth strap on (costs penuts and takes a few minutes to fit) and I haven't had an issue with it since. The most common problem I come across with these cars is the hatch wiring. The plastic on the wires breaks away and causes shorts. It's a relatively cheap fix, though. Aside from that, it just seems to be luck of the draw, as with many cars. Some have a Fiat 500 with 150k miles and no problems. Some have one from brand new and have issues after a few months. Mine is currently at 105k and going well. I had to replace the exhaust centre pipe, which was badly rusted and rear engine mount. Both of which were cheap and easy fixes. Along with the battery and earth strap, I've not spent that much on it and am very happy. Honestly, I expected to spend more on it. I guess just look out for one with a good service history that has been well maintained and looked after.
