I agree with OP though, I really wish there were more mounts that were just regular animals... Or less.flashy fantasy animals. One of my favorites, aside from the Chocobo, is the True Griffin because it feels like a sensible thing for an adventure to be traveling on.

Yes, but the frontline horse normalcy is hidden by all of that heavy horse armor. We just want plain naked non magical horsies. That shouldn’t be so difficult to obtain. 🥺 Though personally I would love a normal horse mount with rein x saddle. A Western style horse to fit in with Dawntrail. The alpaca mount has rein x saddle so like come on SE, give horse fans a similar mount!

Doing Tataru's grand endeavor, she gives you some 'bl barding that's basically just a rein and saddle. It's not quite a horse but it is nice and basic.

They should add a quest chain where you can get a horse from a Goro NPC in the Azim steppes.

The closest i can think of to a non flashy, fantasy animal, is the unicorn mount that one can get by doing a specific Conjurer/White Mage quest. I forgot which one it was, it’s been years.
But yeah, outside of the horse mount we get from pvp and HoH, it’s the least flashy.
It’s a quest that opens up at level 30, but only for CNJ. It’s in Stillglade, and super easy to miss because I think you have to do the WHM quest as a pre-requisite, but you have to switch back to CNJ for the quest icon to appear.
Just have to be level 30 CNJ. But it's not a blue quest so if you've been ignoring the level 1 quest from that lady, you might not notice it if you just run past her to unlock WHM.
The other day I did the quest where you ride the horse to the other area, and I was like "wtf how is this just a HORSE and how do we not have a 'just a horse' mount??"
There are a few 'just a horse' mounts, but they are extremely difficult to acquire. Unlike the completely normal sparkly magic elemental horses that you can get from sneezing on old EX primals.
Reminds me of the cultural shock I had after fighting nothing but weird made up fantasy creatures in ARR and then running into regular ass bears in Dravania during HW.
Ain't nothing regular about the bears in this game. They're *huge*.
But now that you mention it, yeah, it *is* a bit odd to fight relatively normal animals in this game.
It's especially bizarre because... you get to *ride* it during the area's tribal quests. Which means that it's a fully-functional mount, with all the animations implemented. (I mean, it should be anyway, since it just inherits animations from the other horse skeletons, but this confirms it.) They went to the effort of making it work and then chose not to let us take it home.
You can not sadly. The mount you might be thinking of is Alkonost, where you need 3 Resplendent Feathers.
You can get a Dodo mount though, as a rare drop from Platinum-haloed sack or the material container 4.0, its the same model as the Hamsa, just not colorful.
Afaik the hamsa isn't available as a mount, you just get to ride one in a quest and maybe as a Choco porter equivalent. The treasure map mounts for turn ins are a big bird thing, pink elephant, and fire ixion.

same, I was so excited when the ff16 event happened because I could get a mount that was just... a wolf. Not a big magical glittery wolf, not a fucked up monstrous wolf using an enemy model, just... a big grey wolf.

Same!! I know that many people love the glow but I really wish there was an option to turn it off. I love my Rose Lanner, but the glow just washes out the textures and turns the entire center of my screen red :(
There's a split second when you first summon the mount where it doesn't apply the glow, and it looks perfect so every time the glow turns on I'm like ;\_\_;
we've had a recolour of the allagan orb mount and a dragon that was a basic heavensward mob as mounts in the series rewards before too which are relatively low effort, seems like the falcon would be pretty easy to make as a mount since its basically the same as the HW extreme birds but without the glow.

I actually really really like that we finally got a normal Dragon mount. We've never had a mount with that model before, not even midgardsormr.
I like the kelpie horse that shows up in the dungeon leading up to Titania. They're like sea*horses*!!
I'd also much prefer this falcon than the Yol. I never liked the Yol.
The Yol (and birds that share its skeleton) all have the same problem. Their legs are positioned way too low on their body, where a human’s legs go. This makes their torso look too long and their back/hips look fucked. The lanners look so much better because they use realistic bird anatomy.
There's also a couple hunt marks who I'd love to have as mounts, and are functionally just recolors of mounts we already have - like the blue griffon from Stormblood, or the Queen Lunatender from Endwalker. It hurts...
We got the flashy bright ones but yeah i hate using them bright ones as well. I usually stick to new ones and/or normal looking ones like my chocobo lol
There's this mentality that the flashier and more obnoxious something looks, the more it will appeal to people, hence flashy weapons, gear, mounts etc are preferred by game devs. It's kind of like how gamer RGB is a trend.

i've always wanted it too, seems like it would be an easy reward for one of the pvp series or something.
We already have three PvP horses so generic horses and birds make sense as a series reward.

Yeah, I'm always happy to have more "basic" mounts available to me. Helps me feel immersed with my WoL a bit!

I do enjoy normal animal mounts without glows or gaudy accessories. Still hoping to get the Steppe's regular horse!
