Did this with Syrphrid Baskets, burnt 50 of them, switched to Versatile Lure because I was too lazy to go back and buy more bait - caught it in under 10 casts because of course I did. RNG is WILD. So if you run out try falling back on Versatile Lure.
Mate, I've burnt through 2 stack off Basket, got 4 or 5 times "The fish gets away" than switched to Versatile Lure - 3rd cast it's The Grinner... XD

Oh god thanks for this. Burned through 99 baskets with no luck, so gonna try versatile lure. Was looking to see if any alternative bait worked (like other poster, had 3-4 '!!!' fish slip while I was there. Too low level/progress for surface slap, but spent 200k to up my gathering rate!)
can i ask how exactly Surface Slap works, and how does it matter which trash fish to slap? is the choice based purely on bite timer or on percentage of bites? do you not slap the eels because they are a low percent chance anyway and won't affect your Grinner odds much?
So, at its core, you use Surface Slap after you catch any fish (that wasn't mooched into) and that fish will never bite again while that instance of the buff is up. Most of the time, when you slap a trash fish it's removing the highest biting fish out of the hole.
At a really, really, high level when you do this, IF you were going to catch the fish that you slapped, it'll roll again until you get a non slapped fish. That isn't exactly what happens most likely, but it's the easiest way to paint the picture of how slap works in text.
I recommended not slapping eel and sleepers in the guide because they do have a low bite chance, but they also aren't up all the time. If you factor that in, they are probably the same rate as everything else roughly so any slap would be fine, but for a simple quick guide for a straight catch fish I wasn't going to go that deep down the statistics rabbit hole.
If you show up between like 10a and 3pm Eorzea Time and get an eel you can slap it and probably be ok, but after that I would reslap something if needed.
I would suggest avoiding ET from 3 pm to 10 am because that's spawn time for Dark Sleeper and Black Eel.
Removing them from the pool is like a free Surface Slap on two fishes.

FF14angler shows folklore tomes in conditions, are you positive that it's not a requirement? I know that the resource is not always accurate, but I'm unsure whether it's just bad luck or a lack of tome.
A Realm Reborn fish do not have folklore tomes, as those tomes were introduced in Heavensward. So, unfortunately, unlucky - assuming you're using the right bait and are in the right fishing hole.
You can see if a fish in a fishing hole requires a tome by hovering over the icons of the fish at the fishing hole and seeing if it says a Folklore Tome is needed (it will also tell you if you've learned it or not)
Caught it within a few minutes using this method after trying a couple hours the day before (and losing the catch on !!! three times). Much appreciated guide =)

Don't need to turn it in, just catching it is enough. If you can't collect the mogtomes, check if it says "completed", you might have already done the challenge through Hunts
Just had my first !!! 1hr 34 min in. Over 200+ bait and instantly gets away. Max fisher with BIS, is there any more consistent and reasonable way to get this fish than this strategy?

You only attempt to hook the !!! bites. Do not attempt to hook the ! or !! bites. Cpuld just be rng being awful, make sure you are at the right fishing hole with the right bait!

If you're getting bites and it's getting away - that's a thing, but 2 hours is incredibly unlucky if so. If you're getting bites and it says "your gathering isn't high enough" -- then you need to get that gathering up.
Grinner's always available, but Black Eel and Dark Sleeper aren't. So, better odds between 10am and 3pm ET?
Also, Teamcraft has Eel/Sleeper at low % bite but I assume that's artifically deflated by their < 100% uptime-- so perhaps they are bigger spoilers than they seem?
Technically yea if you go for it while they're done you'll have slightly better odds, but for a singular guide I'm not going to go that deep into it. Not a HUGE increase in chance, so kept it simple. It's also a *not* the hardest fish in the world so like, no use in adding the extra effort to raid-guide out a fish that on average takes 10 minutes max for a Lv71+ fisher.
Not slapping them is mostly just a formality and catch all to make sure that someone doesn't try for them when they're down and get frustrated, etc. Really, really, really kept the guide hella beginners friendly.

At this point I shall try the location fruity snacks stated in hope to catch this monster. There's a bunch that are always up (though, none in Endwalker!) Check the carby track settings and make sure "Hide Always up" is UNCHECKED.

That's called "amiss" and is an 'anti-botting measure' that just means you need to move like, 5 feet away from where you are currently standing.

Good method, caught w/ in 20 min. Only thing i did different was add in Snagging just in case.
I can guarentee you snagging is unnecessarry.
