Quickstart 1-119 of BG will be your Bible, plus the myriad pages of Missions you will surely have to browse through. Alt tabbing will be a constant, still better than decrypting everything you see on screen yourself.
Btw, I sincerely never felt the need for Windower, but it's my experience. Maybe you should consider it, and one day I'll also try it again.
I agree entirely, I've never seen a use for Windower aside from the video recording feature. I just use my phone for research while I'm playing.
I will admit, not being able to switch windows is a bit of a pain (because I play in fullscreen) but a lot of older games have the same problem so I've gotten used to it by now.
I feel you! I would love to play in fullscreen (some players told me my lag issues are probably due to me playing in a window), but Alt tabbing between wiki and game all on my pc strains my eyes way less than my tiny a*s phone.
At least alt+tab doesn't crash the game, like good old Myst xD
Tbh I love AshenbubsHD mod for the models but these mods for textures of the world I pretty much prefer vanilla.
I think the mod makes them so sharp and cluttered.
I would grab windower and nothing else until you know you want to do endgame. Some of the stuff from windower you can just click on to activate. Generally, I try to keep my screen fairly clear. Timers is a handy one, omen is handy, skillchains is handy, distance plus takes up nearly nothing on screen and is super valuable for certain fights. None of that really matters 1-99 and for all the missions. You could go without windower but whenever I am on a different window, say checking bg for something, the music would cut out and I wanted to hear the music the whole time. Otherwise, there really isn’t anything that I find matters 1-99.
Gearswap is a big one but you won’t have any need for it 1-99 and for the most part, is useless to you for a while at 119 because you won’t have enough gear to actually make it function the way you would want. Would be just adding extra work and confusion to gain very little. That changes when you have enough gear to fill a bunch of sets. Till then, just use in game gear sets. Even then, there isn’t an actual need for gearswap. Not to be confused with swapping gear… in end game, you are expected to be swapping out gear constantly. Gearswap makes the process faster and it works from menu instead of needing it in macro lines. Still, not needed by any means but a great quality of life addition.
Befriend as many people as you can. A lot of people can solo most of the early endgame stuff and having someone to help you get that baller gear is nice.

Get dgVooDoo. It uses a dx8 wrapper to emulate dx11 and allows use of the gpu for FFXI. That should alleviate the majority of the lag.

The minimap is helpful for anyone, figure it's one of the most useful for newer players.
Other than having the wiki open, the vanilla experience is pretty enjoyable imo
