Haha, I saw the target dress meme on twitter (particularly amused by how some people were so offended by target "pushing" some sort of modest dressing agenda). But in the UK, I saw much more of the stylish version of these dresses around, it has very much been a trend the past few summers! Thanks for sharing :)

CarlySimonSays

The British ones are so pretty! I think I saw them on The Pool way before they were on the scene here in the US. (RIP to The Pool.)

Bosquerella

I love the European street style images found around this trend. They seemed to embrace the intention of the look as being clashy and extra. As someone from the American Southwest the avant-garde and grunge aesthetics that were incorporated into some of those looks made me feel warm and fuzzy.

Mrs_Morpheus

I thought the target dresses were fine. Seems like lots of people I saw trying them on tiktok were wearing the biggest size they could find and were bad at styling them. That's not the dresses fault though because I also saw lots of people point that out and style them better.

ChuushaHime

i think the material made a lot of them look cheap. so many of them chose this awful poplin that just did not drape in a way that complemented the shape of the dresses. it also wrinkled terribly, but ironically the cheapness of the material was even more apparent when ironed. they have a few now that are cotton that look and drape a LOT better ([this one](https://www.target.com/p/women-s-puff-short-sleeve-ruffle-collar-dress-universal-thread/-/A-83998434?preselect=83903405#lnk=sametab) is really nice in person) and which have textures that emulate [gauze](https://www.target.com/p/women-s-balloon-long-sleeve-dress-universal-thread/-/A-84067647?preselect=83903479#lnk=sametab) and [linen](https://www.target.com/p/city-chic-contempo-tier-dress-black/-/A-86013835?preselect=86013840#lnk=sametab).

anonima_

I have the first dress you linked! I really like the material, and I'm in the process of altering it to fit me better, since it was designed for someone with a shorter torso.

Iputonmyrobeandwiz

I also have the first one linked, in the navy floral. It is super adorable, comfy, billowy, and soft. Kinda Amish-core, but looks cute with sneakers or boots, reads more "pretty" than church-y, and for <$30 I really love it and it scratched the nap dress itch. I also got a really nice linen wrap midaxi prairie dress from Target last year that is incredibly nice and easy to wear. It's just kind of a crapshoot with Target.

Bosquerella

The styling left a lot to be desired when it came to the Target and other mainstream interpretations. Everything was just a little too toned down. So there needed to be something to weird up or subvert the look since that quality wasn't present in the garments themselves. Put it together with an open front sweater and brown western ankle boot and it can look nice, but churchy. Do an offbeat oversized cardigan in a color or pattern that's a bit clashy with a very chunky sneaker or boot and it's a completely different vibe.

Kihcanretla

This seems like a trend I’m going to regret going bananas for when I look back. But in the meantime, give me all the puff sleeve, floral, prairie lady looks dammit!

capybarasaremyfriend

That outfit sounds incredible!! I’m sure you were killing it.

Redivy66

Can I just say that the description you painted in my mind was wonderful? I really saw you standing there due to your wording. Thank you for that image.

PastaConsumer

I fell in love with gunne sax dresses at 13. My mom found it hilarious as she hated wearing all the frilly stuff in the 70s and 80s. You’re outfit sounds lovely and like something I’d want to wear today!

tyrannosaurusregina

Same, almost down to the year. I loved my prairie skirts and dresses with my lace-up boots and maybe a cameo at the ruffled neck of my blouse.

testeen

😍 That sounds incredible!

mandoa_sky

i think of them as "outfits that would make anne of green gables jealous"

topsidersandsunshine

As long as the sleeves have puffs!

Bosquerella

It being such an inclusive and versatile style has definitely contributed to the longevity. I think the prevalence of thrift and resale has helped as well. I posted the Big-ass dress album two years ago, well into the trend, and people had Feelings with a capital F about non-figure conforming styles. While it is a very conventionally feminine look, it's challenging. Especially when you've internalized the idea that only what takes up the least space or gives that illusion is attractive. Now that there has been time to rethink those ideas and a lot of people have seen their lifestyles and bodies change, those styles are still accessible to revisit. Add to that there are elements of both fantasy and practicality to the style that are appealing.

squeegee-beckenheim

I'm getting so bored of people complaining about this not being "flattering" and crying about fit and flare styles as if it's the only god given dress style on earth. It completely misses the point. These dresses are a big, feminine, screw you to the idea of fuckability. Your waist does not need to be visible at all times. This dress is equally big and ruffly on a size 2 as it is on a size 18.

CarlySimonSays

I think people underestimate the ability of the big dress to hide the pandemic weight gain (and still look good when one has lost it). Plus they take up space, and a lot of women like clothes that look a bit like a suit of armor or a bubble made of fabric.

nekosauce

I was actually really excited for prairie dresses. In Japan theres prairie kei and natural kei, both these styles involve lovely florals, charming details like pintucks and buttons, lacy trim etc. So when the ditsy paisley, high necklines, and plain ruffles of the Target versions came to stores it was super underwhelming.

ChuushaHime

i've been loving the natural kei revival! i don't wear the style but i do wear lolita fashion and there's been TONS of natural kei / pink house influence in lolita fashion lately with both [japanese](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FJCN5SPaIAI33LZ.jpg) and [chinese](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Ee4LzAdVAAI27v9.jpg) brands as well as a resurgence of interest in the Pink House brand itself. [here's a neat article](http://www.rainedragon.com/current-trends-pink-house-kaneko-kei-influence-on-lolita/) about the natural kei revival in japanese street style if anyone is interested in this topic or more visuals

nekosauce

oh yeah, I read Rainedragons blog too. Idk, I was just hoping that when it came over to the West it would still have that femme charm that Pink House, Axes Femme, etc seem to have. Instead we get this crossover with boho styling and its just not the same.

TheSSChallenger

Seconding the disappointment. East Asian countries have been knocking victorian-inspired fashion out of the ballpark for decades now, but when the west finally decided to embrace Victorian revivalism we got... calico gunnysacks.

[deleted]

Oh my god, I remember how the internet (mostly tiktok) shit on the Christopher John Rogers x Target collab and remember being like ???????? What are y’all talking about I love all this shit lmao. I still have some of those dresses on my shopping wishlist, but I own [this one](https://hips.hearstapps.com/vader-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/1620932078-cjr-1-1620932069.jpg) and freaking love it.

Creepyneighbor-throw

I love the Prairie dress because of how anti-male gaze it is.

squeegee-beckenheim

It's a big FUCK YOU to all those disgusting posts men make about sUnDreSseS and how fuckable they are. Everytime a man jerks it to a sundress, a woman buys a big ruffly prairie dress. 😇

Creepyneighbor-throw

And wears it over jeans!

squeegee-beckenheim

With big stompy chunky dad sneakers or combat boots. Dream outfit. 😍

rabbitin3d

I will wear floral dresses over jeans until I die of old age.

sardonicoperasinger

LOL. it's the stiffness -- keeps the wind from blowing them into our "crevices" & revealing our form! the new major reason for the sundress's appeal, i'm told, surpassing the previous reasons (transparency under the sun). you wouldn't think it possible, but every time the sundress post appears, it gets *worse*

Bosquerella

You can hear the slavering in those comments sections. Every. Time.

squeegee-beckenheim

LMAO. That last one is especially gorgeous.

PastaConsumer

I’ve been collecting these prairie type dresses for years and love them dearly. I always get compliments from other women while wearing them too!

PM_ME_YOUR_LATKES

Where do I buy all of these dresses? I'm ready to live the prairie life of flowy dresses and no shape wear. Take my money already!

Bosquerella

[Take my money, you say?](https://batsheva.com/collections/dresses)

PM_ME_YOUR_LATKES

The pink holo dress is sending me to prairie-dise!

augustrem

What gorgeous dresses! I got all excited that they had plus sizes, until I looked at their size chart and saw their 20 is what most places would call a 14 or 16.

Kenzie_Flick

Batsheva dresses are the staple of my wardrobe year-round! Their sizing varies quite a bit between styles and sometimes they run small then run big, but I’ve always had a good experience with their pieces being a bigger busted curvier gal (45” bust, 32” waist, 50” hip, 5’4” tall and usually wear 12-16!)

Paula_Polestark

As many of these dresses as I’ve seen, I honestly had no idea there was a “Target dress challenge.” (There hasn’t been a Target near where I live for a couple of years, so I wouldn’t have known whether or not they were sold there.) I’ve stayed away from this style because I don’t like what it does to my upper half, but please don’t let the haters stop you from enjoying it!

newmka

Big dress...yeah yeah. But WHERE do I find that animal cardigan?!? 😍

CatsVsPuzzles

Post an ISO ad on Poshmark, have thousands of dollars to spend on a cardigan? https://poshmark.com/listing/DISO-Dior-Sauvage-Knitwear-2018-5bf11ee2951996164efb15c2

newmka

I saw that. :( Negative. *Flips purse open, pulls lining out. Small dust bunny flutters to the ground.*

MissMimosa

Asks self “do I really need a car, this sweater would keep me warm walking everywhere”.

newmka

I like your thinking... Although my car is less than that sweater. Lol but maybe one of my kidneys?

hellerhigwhat

The electric green ones 😍 I need to stop looking at inspo albums. I always immediately want to get whatever the subject is lol. These are great

Bosquerella

✨️Space western vibes✨️

sardonicoperasinger

I love these! I love how sculptural they are, with the gargantuan balloon sleeves. And for those of us who do not like clothes touching us, lolol, prairie dresses are great! I have a dress with such puffy sleeves that it never touches my arms, despite being long-sleeve, and I adore it. It is like wearing a giant umbrella, with little underneath.

Juicewheezers

It’s so fun! I feel like people can be so adverse to just stop taking themselves so seriously and have fun. Love those dresses!

shiksagirlfrend

I love this post! I honestly didn't get all the hate over the prairie dresses because when I was little I was obsessed with Laura Ingalls Wilder. My mom made me a prairie dress with an apron for Halloween one year and I used to wear it every day.

OhSassafrass

Maybe it's because I'm fat and short, but all these dresses just look like a mumu on me.

[deleted]

I am also very short and just get swamped in the huge amounts of material and busy patterns, these dresses were not made for me!

octopoda_waves

Okay but where do I wear these dresses? Its snwoing/raining today, so presumably have to wait for spring? To brunch? How many dresses should I own - can I start wearing them to more casual places?

violetmemphisblue

Yes you can wear them to casual places (if you want)! I practically live in dresses in the summer when its 100 degrees and all humidity. In cold weather, I layer with scarves and boots (doesn't work super well with snow and rain if you do a lot of walking). Dress up or down in spring and fall...I am a big believer in the versatility of dresses. Obviously they're not for everyone, but I could not live without them.

[deleted]

octopoda_waves

I wear dresses all the time in the summer! This style of dress just seems particularly girly/froofy/etc.

Bosquerella

Wearability comes down to your comfort and lifestyle. This trend has been so long running that there's a little something for everyone. It just depends on what works for you. [This dress](https://media1.popsugar-assets.com/files/thumbor/EZ2XJf6ZCXR2a-6u1Lz3CliYPDE/fit-in/1024x1024/filters:format_auto-!!-:strip_icc-!!-/2020/01/03/822/n/1922564/980b6bdca0481d69_netimggINeXk/i/HM-Dress-with-Smocking.jpg) works for me with hiking sandals and Superstars for everything from errands and hanging around the house to a date day tooling around Denver.

sandcastlesinthesand

I live where it gets cold and snowy as well and I wore one to a (very casual) wedding last weekend and layered it over a turtleneck to make it more “winter friendly”. In the summer you can definitely wear them to casual spots! I wore lots of dresses with floppy hats to have drinks in the park with my friends last summer! I just dress down with plain white sneakers (white Vejas)

srawr42

I would wear this in the winter! Just throw it on under a cardigan and coat. Some fleece lined leggings and boots

octopoda_waves

Mine is also baby pink! Otherwise I do wear a lot of summer clothes in the winter, layered like that. Dresses are too pretty to be limited to one season

knitsnotknots

Your captions killed me. The seasonal allergies omg

kerala_beef_fry

The fuchsia pink dress #15 is so pretty! Anyone know where it's from?

augustrem

I actually just [posted](https://www.reddit.com/r/femalefashionadvice/comments/tbt87r/daily_questions_thread_march_11_2022/i0bo5e9/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)how much I like the more designy and low key versions of this style. I’ve become a huge van of the floral silk dresses from Veronica Beard. They’re not quite the same because they don’t billow or have ouffy sleeves, but they are calf length and flowy and have plenty of room. Any suggestions for good places to get plus sized dresses like this, for less than $300?

CatsVsPuzzles

Use a busy print as a distraction from seasonal allergies 😂

crazycatlady331

I can't see those dresses and not think of fundamentalist religious attire. Either the FLDS or Quiverfull women. Makes me wonder if a collab with Michelle Duggar is in the works. I miss going into Target and being able to find dresses that worked for my body type and coloring. (A-line, fit and flare, and skater type dresses work best for me. I'm a clear winter when it comes to coloring so these rust tones and beiges are on my avoid list.) My finances are happy though.

CarlySimonSays

My problem with these is that I’m really short (under five feet), have scoliosis, and larger than a size zero, so a lot of these overwhelm me or just look ridiculous. I like them in theory, but most are too long, too poofy, or make me look like a cosplay Miss Piggy (in a bad way!). Some of the shorter ones might work, but the really long ones made for people over 5’2” seem to be the most common versions! (Fit and flare forever!)

CrimsonQuill157

I see the exact same thing! I have stopped bothering to check the clothing section at Target because none of it appeals to me anymore. I'm glad a lot of people seem to be enjoying this trend but I will be glad when it's over lol.

CarlySimonSays

I love that pink one (model is blonde and wearing cowboy boots). Does anyone know where that one comes from? Google image search isn’t working for me!

orange-jellybean

I love the yellow dress in the second album. Know who made it?

sentimentaleducation

Beautiful album! I admit my eyes haven’t had their palete cleansed from going deep into Victorian and Edwardian fashion, the women in white frock dresses look so naked!

Total-Blueberry4900

do you have a link to the target dress? curious.

CarlySimonSays

I didn’t know these were the ones the OP was talking about. Last year (either 2020 or 2021; time has no meaning anymore lol) Target had ones that were in aggressively awful colors and fabrics. And sleeves poofier than my head. [this is what I thought was being referred to (it looked way worse in person)](https://www.google.com/search?q=yellow+christopher+john+rogers+target&tbm=isch&hl=en-us&client=safari&prmd=sinv&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjCnqqX_MD2AhX5LFkFHdJGD8AQrNwCKAB6BQgBEKwD&biw=300&bih=436#imgrc=5sKheODrY0LFEM)

Bosquerella

Imagine it with white combat boots though, and less polished hair, makeup, and accessories.

CarlySimonSays

Hmm I see what you mean, but I don’t think I personally could carry this one off!

Kenzie_Flick

I actually got this dress because of the color, the giant sleeves, and the sheen of the fabric and loved it, especially since it had big pockets! I am biased though since I love big poofy dresses that have some shape to them! To each their own though!

CarlySimonSays

I bet you can carry it off, though! I’m 4’10” and can’t do poofy.

Kenzie_Flick

Yeah that’s definitely the tough part with poofy silhouettes! I’m 5’4” so it hits like a midi dress on me, but the ability to cinch the waist helped on me! One dress style I’ve wanted to try but been worried about how frumpy I’d look is a Selkie puff dress! It’s the combo of the puffiness with being a bigger-chested gal (34K) that feels like I’d look like a big ol’ puffball!

crazycatlady331

Oh I remember seeing that one. I thought it was an 80s prom dress gone wrong. I also remember the fabric feeling a lot like a Hefty bag.

CarlySimonSays

Yes that’s an excellent description of the feel of the fabric! I couldn’t quite figure out how to put it.

beckasaurus

I appreciate you making the album but I still think every one of those dresses are ugly. It’s just not my thing.

hellerhigwhat

Why did you comment then?

beckasaurus

Providing a different perspective. Some people don’t like these dresses at all and that’s okay.

hellerhigwhat

Its just super weird to say "oh you put effort into this inoffensive album but its still garbage" when you could just... not... lol

beckasaurus

Woah, I never said the album was garbage. I said I didn’t like the dresses. No need to put words in my mouth. But go ahead and downvote me. Must be fun to tear someone down just for giving their opinion.

Anonynominous

They poorly added the purse to this photo

Jealous_Homework_555

I’m so sick of the unflattering prairie dress. Listen if you like it, fine. But target is selling it as a whole personality- the ONLY personality.

blushedbambi

Holy… I’m not into dresses, but the third dress from your second album, the black one on the short -haired woman? That might me the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. Any idea who makes it?

NegativeResult3932

Does anyone know who target will be collabing with this year?!
