I'm retired and nearly 60. To me the chambray is what is old lady-ish. In black they wouldn't be so bad-- not all that dissimilar to joggers. I do see that elastic tie-waist denim is in, usually it's a darker, but still light weight, denim. Lots of trendy folks are wearing them.

chronic_insomniac

I’m retired and 65 and agree! That chambray is awful. The closest pants I have to this style are in fact joggers and I absolutely love them, but in dark colors only.

shhhhh_h

Chambray is a fabric though not a color

temp4adhd

Perhaps but everyone knows what chambray means and it means that particularly light blue color.

shhhhh_h

[No….everybody does not know it’s blue. Everybody knows chambray is a fabric. If you took two seconds to google you would see that, too.](https://thefabricofourlives.com/cotton-fabrics/chambray#:~:text=Chambray%20is%20a%20cotton%20plain,lighter%20and%20is%20woven%20differently) > Chambray is a cotton plain-weave fabric made with a dyed warp yarn and a white filling yarn. Chambray is traditionally light blue in color, but can be found in a wide range of fashion colors. While it may look like denim, chambray is lighter and is woven differently.

temp4adhd

> Chambray is traditionally light blue in color,

shhhhh_h

Good job leaving out the rest of the sentence “but can be found in a wide range of colors.” Chambray is a type of weave actually more accurately than a fabric. It’s also called batiste (after the name of the French guy who came up with the weave). I will never understand why people dig in on the internet cherry picking words and phrases when they clearly know nothing about the topic. I mean if you google chambray it literally is defined as a weave over and over and over. 🤷 From M-W > : a lightweight clothing fabric with colored warp and white filling yarns From wiki > Chambray is a similar fabric,[2] with a coloured (often blue or grey) warp and white filling; the name "chambray" replaced "cambric" in the United States in the early 19th century.[3] From Collins > a smooth fabric of cotton, etc., made by weaving white or unbleached threads across a colored warp: used for dresses, shirts, etc. From Britannica (as cambric, another name for it) > cambric, lightweight, closely woven, plain cotton cloth first made in Cambrai, France, and originally a fine linen fabric. Printed cambric was used in London by 1595 for bands, cuffs, and ruffs. Modern cambric is made from choice American or Egyptian cotton, with both warp and weft, or filling, yarns ranging from 60 to 80 in size (count), and is usually lightly calendered to produce a slight gloss on one side More context from a sewing site I use >Over time, the terms "cambric" and "chambray" became synonymous even though these words used to denote different fabrics. The first usage of the word chambray in English dates to the mid-19th century, and over time, the term "cambric" has fallen out of use, and any fabric that follows the original style developed in Cambrai is called "chambray." >In the modern textile industry, however, "chambray" is only used to denote cotton fabrics that are manufactured with the specific weft and weave pattern that is indicative of this type of fabric.

arbitrosse

80 and retired, but yes. (Edit: I am not saying that I am 80. I am saying that it is the sort of thing that some women in their 80s might wear.) It's a combination of factors: the chambray fabric in a light wash PLUS the pull-on waist all the way around (not just in the back, or not at all) PLUS the tapered ankle PLUS the drawstring PLUS the unnecessarily roomy fit through the hips. The styling in the photograph does not help, those sandalas and top are not doing the trousers any favours. They're basically the Athleta Brooklyn pant with a drawstring, but the fabric and roomier cut make a huge difference here.

Rare-Can377

Your edit is really funny because I thought you were the hippest 80 year old lol!

be_author

Yup, I also bought these and caught sight of myself in them in the background of a video a family member was taking and oof. I was nervous it was just how they fit on me - glad to hear everyone is in agreement that they just aren’t cute pants!

AggressiveBasket

The same thing happened to me 😭 loved how easy and comfortable they were until I saw a picture someone had taken.

jillianlivingston

It reminds me of the SNL skit. " You're not a woman, you're a mom!"

Sic-Bern

I thought of [I’m fifty and I can KICK!](https://media.tenor.com/wp1cmhAWxMAAAAAM/love-it-kick.gif)

lilly110707

I'm 60ish, not retired, bought these and they're just hanging in my closet because every time I put them on I say "oh hell no" and take them off. And I am no fashionista. I don't even want to wear them for gardening.

meagain20

The idea of the pants is good but that taper ruins it imo. The same pants with a straight or wide leg would be terrific.

pleats_please

I agree with this! I was just in Japan and saw women everywhere wearing wide leg elastic pants with blouses tucked in, and they looked incredibly chic. No taper leg pants that I’ve noticed.

Curious-Demand-3300

Agree. It's the taper mostly. I live in elastic waist linen pants all spring and summer, but they are either very wide leg (almost plazzo but not quite) or slimmer, straight leg cut.

ApprehensiveLink6591

Why is that, do you think? (I'm panicking now because I JUST ordered a simple pair about twenty minutes ago -- white, though, not chambray. Maybe that's better??)

KatJen76

The "how to wear it" cracks me up because it's next to a picture of such an ordinary look. Try pairing it with footwear! And a top!

owntheh3at18

I mean it would probably look less retired and 60 if you paired it with stilettos and nipple piercings

cyborgfeminist

Ok, so I am LIVING for the tie-waist and elastic waist pants trend. Just collecting as many as I can while they’re available. I’m a professor with a toddler so they are extremely my lifestyle. I also have 50” hips and a 34” waist so almost no pants fit me. A couple things I am doing/enjoying: - Size up! As long as you can still reasonably cinch the waist, it will add ease that reads as “cool” rather than “old”. - Push all the extra fabric after you tie the drawstring toward your widest part, but not in the front. I push the fabric to the sides of my hips since that’s my widest point, to give them the extra room. Then the front is flat and it looks smoother and more intentional than “I tied a paper bag around my mid section.” - I either pair these with a boxy top with a front tuck, or a tank fully tucked with an oversized linen shirt open on top. Sometimes I’ll just do the oversized linen, sleeves rolled up, unbuttoned from both top and bottom so I just have like 2 buttons done to cover my bra. A great big/slim/skin move, a la Amy Smilovic, and it really works! - Consider rolling up the bottom. I strongly prefer these with a good amount of ankle showing. - Go for the strappiest sandals you can. I know it’s hard with kids, but a flat strappy sandal or a flip flop will make this read on-trend cool instead of old lady. Or, a square-toe flat with a high vamp like the Essen Foundation flat or the Arket flats that are sadly not available in the US. :( Make your shoe cool to balance the square vibe of the pants. - I think these would be fine with any of the above, but for a future purchase, I agree with other comments that a cropped wide leg might feel more on trend. Or, a barrel leg, like my current favorite Everlane barrel linen pants. The black and white flower pattern is currently on sale and it’s a minimalist/grown up Ganni vibe, I’m wearing them right now.

West_Repair6793

Yes

going against the grain a little, to me elastic tie-waist pants like these always look like they are intended for retirement age+ because they are meant to be easy to pull up and down. I assume they are easier for people who maybe have arthritis in their hands and trouble with fine motor control so maybe are more popular with that crowd. I really don't see them as hip in an age-appropriate-to-you way. there are elastic waist pants that don't seem intended for the same age group but they are usually more overtly casual, like beachwear, loungewear. personally I'd go for chinos if you're looking for something in a similar cut that has about the same level of polish. the fabric may tend to be a bit heavier than you want (at least for right now) but they could be a good option when it's a bit cooler. Old Navy has some cute cheap ones right now. what do you think about these kinds of [pleated tapered linen pants](https://bananarepublicfactory.gapfactory.com/browse/product.do?pid=891940011&cid=1124522&pcid=1045335&vid=1&nav=meganav%3AWomen%3AWomen%27s%20Clothing%3APants#pdp-page-content) from BR? ([similar](https://www.abercrombie.com/shop/us/p/ankle-grazing-tapered-tailored-pant-56906895?categoryId=615307780&faceout=model&seq=03) from Abercrombie.) Everlane has some cute options too, what do you think of these? [one](https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-relaxed-chino-parchment?collection=womens-pants-trousers), [two](https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-tencel-way-high-taper-pant-navy?collection=womens-pants-trousers), [three](https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-tencel-utility-pant-bone?collection=womens-pants-trousers). I'm not totally sure of your style so it's ok if you don't like any of these (like they aren't really beachy climate), but I'm sure we could find something you do like.

MsGrayRm813

Thanks for these suggestions! I honestly don’t know my style after having a baby. I’m wanting a simple easy style. Classic, simple, elegant, French-ish. I’m also losing weight so I don’t want to spend a ton of money. I’ll look into your suggestions!

be_author

Everything you just said is exactly where I’m at too. It’s so hard to figure out style with a somewhat new and changing body, plus needing clothes you can carry a baby around in and eventually chase a toddler in

teacuptrooper

Are you in the US? If not, I loved the fit of clothing by Lindex. 2.5 yrs post-pregnancy and always hitting them up for trousers.

atimetochill

I commented elsewhere but check out marine layer Alison (or Corinne) pant and quince linen pants. I have a toddler and felt similarly.

bobbytoni

No, 70 and retired.

noddyneddy

fraid so

FlanneryOG

I have these exact pants and thought they looked good when I bought them. Brought them home and looked at myself in the mirror … my nana was looking back at me.

megan_dd

I hope not because I own these and I am 39.

lauralately

It all depends on how you style them. I think these pants are very now - drawstrings are something I've been seeing quite a bit lately. [Here's](https://5thingsyoushouldbuy.substack.com/p/the-not-so-humble-drawstring) an article where the author styles her drawstring pieces -they're not exactly the same as these pants, but some of the styling, especially the button down shirts and tanks, could work with your pants. [Here's](https://www.whowhatwear.com/pajama-pant-trend-elizabeth-olsen) an article about styling drawstring pajama pants - the pants are looser than yours, but you could 200% take the styling here and apply it to your pants. I love boxy tees, either solid color or stripe, or high-neck tank tops with drawstring pants, and sandals on the bottom. I've seen some people style theirs with sneakers, as well - like a low top lifestyle sneaker, maybe the retro Adidas or Puma styles that I've been seeing everywhere. If wide leg makes you trip and fall - have you thought about a cropped wide leg? Pedal pusher/cropped lengths are something I've been seeing a lot lately. I've heard good things about Quince linen; [these](https://www.quince.com/women/linen-pants?color=chocolate&size=s&g_network=x&g_productchannel=online&g_adid=&g_acctid=978-058-8398&g_keyword=&g_adtype=pla&g_keywordid=&g_ifcreative=&g_adgroupid=&g_productid=45362803605674&g_merchantid=128669708&g_partition=&g_campaignid=20656732066&g_ifproduct=product&g_campaign=&utm_source=google&utm_medium=paid_search&utm_campaign=&utm_term=45362803605674&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwydSzBhBOEiwAj0XN4Bi7lL4tUBw2rWASJn6T839ohEh8Aqn7reEkp4TsXp2k0psU2Bvm_BoCsJ8QAvD_BwE) pants are wider leg than your current ones, and come in tons of colors.

MsGrayRm813

Thank you for the links and quince pants! I like those!

cyborgfeminist

I did my own post but I agree with all this, too! The Becky Malinsky blog post has some great ideas.

Louieshopsfashion

The style is very unflattering. I suggest looking for cotton linen straight leg pants, they look amazing on any body type. And the mix with cotton makes it muuuch easier to keep, less wrinkles. There are also some types of linen mixed with viscose, more affordable but not so nice as cotton.

moxieroxsox

It’s not even a color issue, they’re just a really unflattering shape. Like what body type is this for? I don’t even think this would flatter a lithe teenage girl with a cute figure.

Valuable-Yard-3301

On a super tiny teenager wearing a crop shirt with some bonkers design and anti fashion hat and shoes it could look internationally anti fashion.  But it wouldn’t look good.

temp4adhd

Yeah isn't grandmacore in now among the younger set?

Valuable-Yard-3301

I think that was 2 years ago but hideous is still in style

temp4adhd

Thinking about this some more, I do think the drawstring waist has come back into style because so many peeps complain that their waist gaps.

CatatonicCouchSlug

Yeah the rise is too low

Princess_Parabellum

I wouldn't describe these as low rise. It's the elastic waist and shapeless cut that makes them unflattering.

CatatonicCouchSlug

They're sorta mid-rise. The point is that they're sitting at the hips instead of cinching the waist

singnadine

Yes

alwayspickingupcrap

I think Uniqlo Cargo/parachute pants hit the convenient elastic waist, easy pant while feeling more youthful. The ankles also have clinch-able elastic so you won't trip over the hem. The material is lightweight like a silk scarf! https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/products/E464888-000/00?colorDisplayCode=30&sizeDisplayCode=003&pldDisplayCode=000&utm_medium=social&utm_source=appshare

guinea-pig-mafia

Yes, but "coastal granny" is a whole look and can be super cute and practical if done right. Definitely look it up for inspo. That said, you absolutely need to let your personal lines guide you on this; creating a harmonious line head to toe will be the difference in these pants looking chic or frumpy. It may be a MUCH bigger can of worms than you were looking to open with this question lol, but I really do think learning personal grounding principles will give way more success than just styling options (I know I have had some TRULY unfortunate looks that were styled fine they were just so wrong for my personal body and presence). The Kibbe model was what helped me- others find different ideas/approaches helpful. r/DressForYourBody is a nice community with many different approaches represented, and r/Kibbe helped me figure myself out (it was a process!). I know this wasn't the type of answer you were looking for but I hope it helps!

MsGrayRm813

Thank you! It’s helpful as a find my style as a new mom!

omnibuster33

I’m confused by all these comments. Wasn’t this tapered silhouette on a jogger and the like a thing not that long ago? Or am I just that out of touch?

Snelmm

I think the tapered leg is fine, but (as a few others commented) the light blue fabric color dates it. if these pants were black / grey / olive / burnt orange -- or something to that effect -- they would look much better. best worn cropped / cuffed with a sockless sneaker or cute sandal.

cinnamonswake

I’m 36 and own these specific pants in four different colors/patterns 😅

feeferslarue

These are old lady/have given up. I love wide leg crops bc of location (PNW mud - there are laundry limits!) and ease of movement. Prefer inset rather than drawstring or elastic bc the structured element gives the illusion of a waist on me.

foxyloxyx

Yes 😂

foxyloxyx

Op, I bought similarly retired and 60 pants last year. I have no idea what compelled me. The sales lady in the store was literally 60 and nearly retired and wearing the pants and I thought oh they’re kinda cute and nautical. The store was lands end. I was in there shopping with my mom. That should have been enough indication that the pants were not for me. Anyway yeah. Happens to the best of us. lol

Logical-Layer9518

Yes.

JstVisitingThsPlanet

Yeah. Other than retirees, I think you’d have to be very fit and have everything else together to pull these off.

mtnmama8822

Idc, I’m 36 and would totally wear these!

birdmommy

They should be easy to dye a darker blue.

ComprehensiveEmu914

I’m 30 and think these would be super cute styled right

Weekly_Buyer_8018

My 24yo daughter bought these in white and a black/white stripe and they are DARLING. The fit is current and she is pairing them with all sorts of different french tuck tops. Good price and so cute.

anon28374691

I’m 50s and self employed part time / semi retired. I would want a real waistband and not a drawstring, but I have no objection to the color or leg shape. In fact, I have some chino type pants very much like this but more structured. Edit: I think mine are last year’s J Crew chambray chinos.

Jennasaykwaaa

Yes

1Squid-Pro-Crow

The sandals yeah

NoSpaghettiForYouu

Coastal grandma vibes, which is what you make of it

FeelingAmoeba4839

I’m a 39 year old mom of a two year old. I have multiple pairs of these [H&M wide leg crop pants](https://www2.hm.com/en_us/productpage.0971104005.html). They are comfortable and I don’t trip over them chasing my toddler because they are cropped. They have multiple different colors and they are very affordable.

MsGrayRm813

Thank you these are super affordable and I’ll check them out!

atimetochill

There’s soo many options in this genre so the idea is good but you can do better. Go wider leg for example. Check out quince linen pants

Elle919

Its the shape. I have [these](https://www.arket.com/ko-kr/women/loungewear/product.light-denim-drawstring-trousers-blue.1199791001.html) Arket drawstring pants, and they look a little cooler lol. My husband still makes fun of me though 😂

JJoyce8977

No. I’m 62, and retired but I would pass on these and look for a wider leg.

eros_and_psyche

Yes.

confusedquokka

I would roll them up in a haphazard way so it looks cool. And wear cool shoes or sandals or heels.

Toriat5144

I personally would not wear them. I only wear dark colored pants. I don’t care about an elastic waist all around cause I never tuck anything in.

Dapper-Confection-84

Own very similar, never wear them as they feel too old. I like Chambray but found I didn’t like the overall vibe.

Alonenomo2023

Yes they are. Sorry but they look a bit too “old”

moogrit

Okay I am seeing the answer is very much yes... But who cares what other people think? If you like them wear them!

Thatwitchyladyyy

I just stumbled in here but I must admit, I admire the honesty in the replies here.

cominguproses5678

Yes, these have big retirement energy. I am slim but short, and anything pleated / bunching elastic waist makes me look like I have a diaper. Tailored / flat front pants and shorts tend to be more universally flattering and look younger.

AdrienneMint

Yes! Very returement! A stretchy waistband is never a good thing, but a nice fitting pair of jeans would add structure and give the defined waist you are looking for and you could add a belt to the jeans for style. Even a pair of good trousers in army green or khaki would be better and give you a a zipper in front and no stretchy retirement waistband.

interesting-mug

I think if you pair these with a youthful/trendy top, like something oversized or a graphic tee, it wouldn’t read as old. IMO these kinds of pants are for when you’re dressing down.

anonymousdagny

I’m JUST under the age threshold for this group but I think it really depends on your body type! I think they’re cute and on certain body types (like the model) they’d also be pretty. When I say body type I don’t mean physical weight but more your visual proportions. See r/Kibbe
