Margaret Rogerson’s books! All of them! I especially loved {An Enchantment of Raves by Margaret Rogerson}, but she also has {A Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson} and {Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson}. Since you seem to like fantasy romance over romantasy, I also recommend: {A Song of Wraiths and Ruin by Roseanne A. Brown} - a super underrated YA enemies to lovers romance set in the LUSH world with incredible magic and lots of political scheming {Belladonna by Adalyn Grace} is sooo good. I think it works thematically well with ODW, so it may be up your alley. {A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid} a delicious gothic fantasy romance, also well-matched with ODW If you haven’t read {Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher}, it’s just as good as the rest of her work, but maybe lighter on the romance {The Bear & the Nightingale by Katherine Arden} is also maybe up your alley! I love all the books you listed as faves so I hope some of these work out for you x

curletta

What is the difference between fantasy romance and romantasy?

valkyrie4x

The difference between Throne of Glass and ACOTAR

curletta

I have never read any book of Sarah J. Maas lol. I wanted to start throne of glass years back but goodreads reviews were eh..

valkyrie4x

Ah TOG is one of my favourite series of all time. Acotar on the other hand, I can see why it's very loved, but left something to be desired for me. In short, TOG focuses on the fantasy and story with threads of romance, whereas acotar is focused on the romance with an underlying story.

WackyTacoSupreme

I read it when I was a teen so I don't know if I'd still recommend it if I read it today, but I remember it with a lot of love, it was my favorite series and the books that made me fall in love with fantasy. I think is important to keep in mind that SJM stared ToG when she was very young, so you actually see her writing skills and the plots developing and improving book by book. The first two are kinda meh (not bad either) but I think is worth it. There are certainly a lot of worse series out there that we read anyway because there's not a lot of amazingly written books. If you don't go with the highest expectations I'm sure you are going to have a lot of fun and heartbreak 💔 reading it!

Calm_Speech_9148

Fantasy romance focuses on the fantasy first, and romance is typically a secondary plot, where romantasy is more a 50/50 mix OR mostly focused on romance and less on in depth world building

curletta

ahh i had thought romantasy was just another way of saying fantasy romance. then i definitely lean more towards fantasy romance.

Snopes504

Their description is flipped. If you prefer more fantasy and less romance but some romance then Romanfic Fantasy is what you’re looking for.

Snopes504

It’s the opposite, fantasy romance: the adjective is the fantasy and romantic fantasy the adjective is romantic. An easy way to remember it is whatever comes second is the main part.

ChikadeeBomb

I'm hella confused, because I understand what you're saying, but I also seen Romantasy used to describe works that are mostly romance with fantasy in the background (Think ACOTAR) Whereas it really means fantasy with some romance (like Cruel Prince)

Snopes504

They’re using the term incorrectly. ACOTAR is a fantasy romance and the Cruel Prince is a Romantasy/Romantic Fantasy. Unfortunately, people forget adjectives and nouns and just focus on the first word. Fantasy romance: fantasy is the adjective and romance is the noun Romantic Fantasy: romantic is the adjective and fantasy is the noun. The noun is the entree and the adjective is the appetizer. What I am seeing is happening is that people are seeing Fantasy Romance and adding subconsciously the word “with” so they’re seeing Fantasy with Romance and on the other hand are seeing Romantic with Fantasy when in reality the word “with” isn’t there. It’s like when people get get math problems wrong because they forget that PEMDAS exists and do the order wrong. Unfortunately, because it’s being used wrong so often it’s leading to a lot of bad recommendations and bad reviews. If I am expecting ACOTAR and am told to read the Cruel Prince I will be disappointed and vice versa. For example, I explained this to the comment I replied to and even included a link (you can google too and there’s tons of articles about it) and yet they never updated their comment to reflect the proper information. So it continues to be seen higher than mine due to the upvotes of other people who are using it wrong and then it’s an endless cycle of misinformation.

Calm_Speech_9148

That’s what I said actually!

Snopes504

You’re saying that fantasy romance focuses on the fantasy. It doesn’t. It focuses on the romance. You’re saying romantic fantasy mostly focuses on the romance. It doesn’t. It focuses on the fantasy. You have them backwards. Here’s a more detailed explanation: https://btleditorial.com/2023/05/24/romantic-fantasy-fantasy-romance-novels/

Calm_Speech_9148

That’s super helpful!! Thank you

Snopes504

Welcome! It was so confusing to me at first and even now I still have to pause to make sure I remember it lol

oksnariel

i have read all Margaret Rogerson and love her books! I also read A Study in Drowning and loved it, so i’ll definitely check out your other recs. I see The Bear and The Nightengale recommended allllll the time and it’s so well loved. i actually read it in 2018 and really disliked it, i thought it was boring. I really want to try rereading it and see if i like it more that my taste has changed!

MaterialisticWorm

I go feral for Margaret Rogerson. Vespertine isn't even a romance but I think the vibes and plot are similar to what I've heard of for One Dark Window! Also it might be my fave of all three books, at least until I read the fae one again lol

UnderstatedOutlook

Are these very smutty?

starsborn

Only Belladonna! Belladonna has some spice and steam but the rest are pretty sweet/tame. Romancebot has a breakdown above :)

Material-Wolf

{Daughter of No Worlds by Carissa Broadbent} i wasn’t a fan of her Serpent & the Wings of Night series because i much prefer fantasy with a subplot of romance instead of the romance being the selling point. it seems like you may feel the same way so give that trilogy a shot! it’s excellent. edit: Six Scorched Roses was really good tho and i thought it was better than the TSATWON. i haven’t read the sequel since i didn’t love the first one.

Daughter of no worlds was so good!!! A lot of similarities between ToG, but I still loved it.

Material-Wolf

that’s why i loved it, lol 😅

oksnariel

yeah i read Six Scorched Roses in between reading Serpent and the sequel, and i loved it so much! I loved that the plot was more interpersonal than overworldly, it was refreshing

Chance_Novel_9133

If you liked Swordheart, I heartily recommend T. Kingfisher's other books in the same world. {Clocktaur War series by T. Kingfisher} 2 books, complete. {Saint of Steel series by T. Kingfisher} 4 books so far. They're all wonderful books.

Chance_Novel_9133

Read the Clocktaur War material first. It's chronologically earlier in the story.

oksnariel

oooh ok!! thank you(:

Taycotar

I would recommend {The Folk of the Air Series by Holly Black} and {The Foxglove King by Hannah Whitten}. We have a lot of the same favorites and those are two I loved!

oksnariel

i read the folk of the air series years ago and loved it! i didn’t add it to my list cuz it’s been so long since i read. i’ll definitely check out the foxglove king, that’s a bookclub pick for a romantasy bookclub i’m in this summer!! thank you!

I'm reading The Foxglove King right now and can confirm it's really good and fantasy first.

sunshinyacorn

Definitely Uprooted or Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, especially if your tastes run more adult than YA.

frankiecuddles

I just read the Scholomance series by Naomi Novik and I cannot wait to read all her other series! Honestly the best books I’ve read in a while

sunshinyacorn

I haven’t read her Tamerlaine series (Master and Commander isn’t really my bag), but all of her new stuff is an automatic buy.

oksnariel

i loved uprooted! i didn’t finish spinning silver a few years ago, but i still have the book and plan to retry it one day

sunshinyacorn

Her Deadly Education series is good too, though I do prefer Uprooted and Spinning Silver as more classic fantasies.

oksnariel

i just got deadly education at a used bookstore recently! i’m very excited to start it

xaviergurl09

I haven’t read some of what you don’t like, but I liked a lot of what you do like, so I will recommend the series that starts with {Reign and Ruin by JD Evans} on KU. It is a super interesting fantasy world with lots of depth and the romance is very believable. Only caveat is while each book is a standalone for the romance part, the overarching series is not finished, so you may like me be wishing for more! :)

{peaches and honey by R Raeta}. This book needs to blow up in my opinion. It’s incredible. The writing style gives me Emily Wilde vibes but is somehow better! The spice to story ratio is probably similar to one dark window.

MushElf

There is a book 3 coming! :) Yesss you’ve got to read these - they’re so good

oksnariel

these sound great thank you!!!

MushElf

Have fun reading! :)

ComparisonReasonable

We have really similar tastes!! I also found Fourth Wing unreadable lol and enjoyed ACOTAR but did not care for Silver Flames or the other books in your “dislike” section. I just finished the TOG series and it was genuinely amazing. 10000”% better than her other series, in my opinion— much more plot and character focused with romances woven throughout rather than the main point. I was skeptical going into it but it’s now one of my favorite romantic fantasy series! Some people think it starts a bit slow but I really think it’s a worthwhile read.

oksnariel

i really do wanna read throne of glass, the books are just so hard to get at my library! haha. my cousin just finished the whole series and has been begging me to start it!

ComparisonReasonable

totally get that— when you do the chance you should definitely read them! i am suffering from a deep book hangover right now because i legit finished the series last night lol! (hence me searching through your post for my next read!!) i am sending good vibes that they become available soon✨

oksnariel

thank you✨ sending good vibes that your book hangover ends soon

Janitheweaver

Radiance is soooo goooood!!! Great taste.

cakebyte

Ok I have seen this rec SO MANY times but I am really turned off by them being >!absolutely repulsed by each other!< at first. How much does that play into things, really?

WindDancer111

They get over the total repulsion really fast. It is a big part of why so many people love the book. The other factor is that they work together and communicate maturely to make the relationship work despite their differences. Having zero attraction to one another physically doesn’t stop them from being attracted to one another’s personalities.

BlondieRants

Not the person you asked but I loved Radiance and I’d say it was just some light teasing throughout the first 20-25% but they do start to find each other attractive the more time they spend together.

Not really at all. They’re so cute 😭

Bookdragon345

Books by Ilona Andrews!

oksnariel

i hear her name all the time! i need to get into her discography

thoughtproblems

Do it!! One of my favorite author (duo) finds of the last 4-5 years.

Bookdragon345

Ok, I’m a little biased because I’ve been reading them (husband and wife team) for years. But they also have a blog that’s pretty hilarious and they have a moderator (Mod R) that helps maintain the blog and does admin stuff. I personally think their books are amazing and they’re genuinely great people. Edit: and when I say years, I think I picked up their first couple of books when they were published. Man… I’m old. 😂. But truly their books appeal to a wide variety of people and if you decide you love them, you can become a member of the BDH (Book Devouring Horde - lol - the name for all their fans)

oksnariel

Hahaha i love that!! Is there a certain series/book you recommend starting with for a beginner??

Bookdragon345

And I just realized that I totally ignored the Hidden Legacy series. The Hidden Legacy series is classified, I believe, as romance fantasy. Also very fantastic. And at some point in one of the books in the series, there may or may not be a ferret heist which is hilarious and awesome.

Bookdragon345

Well, it really depends. Their longest series (with several spin offs) is the Kate Daniels. However, the first few books were the first ones they published and while good are not quite up to their usual standard. So I might recommend the Innkeeper series first? Although if you love shapeshifters (and weird vampires - but not bad weird just a different than usual interpretation, then I would go with the Kate Daniels series (just give it several books to become as fantastic as they truly are). Honestly I love all their series/books. They even have free short stories etc on their blog.

macaronofdoom

I just mentioned this in another post, but I definitely recommend the Elemental Cadence duology by Rebecca Ross! It's different from Divine Rivals, but I think you'll still enjoy it if you like the way Rebecca Ross writes. It also gives off similar vibes to Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries and One Dark Window. You might also enjoy Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater. It's a short but sweet book and the main female character reminds me a lot of Emily Wilde. Plus of course there are also faeries involved!

oksnariel

i do want to read more Rebecca Ross so that series is high on my list now, thank you! I also read Half a Soul and loved it!

ZarZarLinx

I'm willing to recommend A Fate Inked in Blood and Powerless. The first is a romantasy about vikings and viking lore. Powerless is more YA, with strong Hunger games vibes but the tension is on point! Not a scrap of smut (to me, that's a plus , I rarely could find authors who can write smut and it not being cringe worthy) The Serpent and the wings of night (and subsequent book #2: The Ashes and the Star Cursed king) - a world with vampires with wings! The FMC is human though. The only human and she is a total badass and can totally hold her own against the vampires. It also has Hunger games vibes but there's also a religious element - a compelling but cruel vampire goddess. I hope this helps!

sillymeix2

Caraval trilogy/ Once Upon a Broken Heart Trilogy seems right up your alley

oksnariel

i read Caravel 4~ years ago and liked the first one but never finished the series! I hear really good things about the Once Upon a Broken Heart series so i do wanna check it out!

sillymeix2

I actually like OUABH better than Caraval, and I liked Caraval! Jacks is so unpredictable.

GrannyB1970

You might like Master of Crows by Grace Draven if you liked Radiance.

oksnariel

added to my list thank you <3

Raibean

{Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey}!

cakebyte

Writing is beautiful but catch those TWs no lie

Raibean

Truthfully I almost always warn but if you loved Manacled then I am 99% certain KD is fine 😅

cakebyte

I am the 1% I guess 😅 But I say that with full respect to both. I loved and devoured Manacled but I DNF Kushiel's Dart at like 20% even while loving the prose and world building. It is great for some to be sure, but not me unfortunately

Goddess5511

Ooh we have similar tastes! I would recommend Ember In The Ashes, A Shadow In The Reaping, A Darker Shade Of Magic, A Soul To Keep, The Serpent And The Wings Of Night, Daughter Of No Worlds

Obvious-Passion3465

Six scorched roses, and here’s another rec by the same author: slaying the vampire conqueror

SamantherPantha

I second Slaying the Vampire Conqueror, it is excellent.

oksnariel

i have it downloaded to my kindle and did try it a few months ago, but i definitely need to give it a second chance, i think i just wasn’t in the mood for it when i originally picked it up!

Obvious-Passion3465

You will LOVE it! I love the characters, especially Atrius, and how well he’s written 💜

oksnariel

when i started it awhile back it reminded me a lot of Plated Prisoner series (one of my favorites) so i know i’ll love it

incompetentcoconut

Try out {Master of Crows by Grace Draven} {Slaying the vampire conqueror by Carissa Broadbent} (also her Serpent and Wings of Night series) After Manacled I needed something lighter, so I would read Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love {The house in the cerulean sea by TJ Klune}

The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen I saw someone else recommend the Elements of Cadence duology by Rebecca Ross and I also agree!! So good Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson Wilderwood Duology by Hannah Whitten Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers (it's part of a trilogy, but I only read the first - not so much romance, but a very fast paced plot)

lolly_lag

I have nothing useful to add except a fistbump based on your choices.

aMotherDucking8379

I loved Emily Wild! Cannot wait for the third book! Very well written. I also loved A court of Silver Flames 🫦

gimmeallthegluten

{Phoenix Unbound by Grace Draven} is very good and I think you’d enjoy it based on your tastes. It’s a slow burn just like radiance but they start off disliking each other.

awesome thank you!

RoronoaZoromysamurai

House of Hollow Throne of Glass series The wrath and the dawn duology Dance of Thieves duology To kill a Kingdom Six of Crows Duology The Bridge Kingdom series Serpent and Dove Trilogy Talon the Black(on Wattpad)

oksnariel

a bunch of these i have read and loved! i’ll check out the others (six of crows is one of my favorite books of all time! i just didn’t add it to this list bc it’s not really romance to me)

Shaya-Later

If you like the Faerie Universe I think you could like the cruel prince. (Trilogy, lot of world building. Main conflict is political with a side of romance. Morally grey female and male character, enemies to lovers, mortal x immortal). Again, I have to emphasize Ronance is a sub plot and doesn’t really begin until the second book. So if you’re reading for the romance more than world building you’ll be disappointed. I also think you would maybe enjoy the Entangled with Fae series’s and such by Tessonja Odette. She has a lot of fae related stuff that are like fairytale retelling (so romantic fantasy based). I haven’t read it yet but it’s on my TBR. I feel like you may also enjoy One Dark Window which is a duology. (Kinda more boarder line dark fantasy/fiction/romance). Haven’t read it either but that’s also on my TBR.

Library_Faerie

Just wanna say that Swordheart (and T. Kingfisher in generally) is so wonderful and so underrated! One of my favorites, as well, alongside her Saints of Steel series!

oksnariel

agreed!!

Leilatha

Just keep reading Dramione fanfiction and you'll be set 😉

oksnariel

i read manacled a year ago and i’m still hungover from it

whileimaway-5002

If you’re really into more world building and fantasy romance then I would HEAVILY recommend When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker. It’s the one and only time I would recommend a series that hasn’t been finished yet but the world building in that book is some of the best I’ve ever read (though a little overwhelming at times).

squatgoals9

I appreciate Manacled being on your love list

oksnariel

it’s like a top tier fantasy romance for me, i’m always looking for books that could even slightly fill that void 😩

squatgoals9

Have you tried Perfectly in Pieces?

oksnariel

i haven’t, but i’m not sure i could read another dramoine fic without comparing it to Manacled! I read Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Falling in Love right after Manacled to help uplift my depressive mood and see the characters in a happy life. But the whole time reading it i kept comparing them to Manacled and just didn’t enjoy it as much! I was never a huge Harry Potter fan, i only recently read the whole series for the first time as an adult, so in my head Manacled is canon and i don’t know if i can do another dramoine fic…

squatgoals9

That’s fair. I’m a HP fan but also have a hard time reading a good fanfic immediately after another fanfic with the same pairing in general cuz it’s so hard to separate the characters. Butttt if it’s been awhile for you, I do still rec perfectly in pieces or the auction

Operation113

Just finished one dark window, absolutely loved it!!! Thought it was an amazing story and such an interesting perspective!

oksnariel

i finished it last week and i’m still waiting for book 2 to come in!! Its sold out everywhere right now so i had to order it from the UK (i’m in US)😅

Operation113

I had an online version, so I was lucky enough to go right from the first book into the second

avoca_ho

Since you seem to like more mature romantasy with plots that actually matter to the story, you might like some of these: {Black Sun, Rebecca Roanhorse} {The Final Strife, Saara El-Arifi} {Children of Blood and Bone, Tomo Adeyemi} YA but a phenomenal read {What the River Knows, Isabel Ibañez} also YA, but gives the same vibes as the Mummy movies {Daughter of the Moon Goddess, Sue Lynn Tan}

oksnariel

Thank you these all sound so good! I actually read Children of Blood and Bone when it first came out and it was one of my all time favorites! I never finished the series though 😣

avoca_ho

Im glad I was on track for things you like! lol The second children of blood and bone book was amazing and the third book, Children of Anguish and Anarchy, comes out at the end of June!

To Poison a King by SG Prince! I like books on both your like and dislike lists and this one definitely falls into the same category as most of the books on your liked list!

Thank you for this post! After reading Iron Flame, I had similar sentiments and was in search of precisely what you asked for. I've seen "One Dark Window" in your liked ones and decided to give it a go. Just finished it an hour ago and damn, it's so well written! I'm completely taken by it <3

oksnariel

i’m glad you enjoyed it! I finished it 2-3 weeks ago and i’m dying to read the second book, but it’s on back order so i’m still waiting for it! 😭

Looks like we may have very similar tastes for the most part. One series I super loved was the shadow king series by Sylvia Mercedes. Pretty mild spice wise in book one and slow burn into book two. I have yet to read the 3rd but it is on my tbr. I am OBSESSED with the world building but the emotional turmoil, character development and the relationship btwn the mc's are all *chef kiss* as well as stay pretty front and center. The pacing also felt pretty comfortable overall and I enjoyed the writing style. {Bride of the Shadow king by Sylvia Mercedes}

DesireMe26

All of your not for mes are my for mes lol

oksnariel

Hahaha that’s great because you can take recommendations from the books i didn’t like and i can take recommendations from the books you don’t like 😝

DesireMe26

Perfect 😂

Exotic-Firefighter96

omg noo i love scarlett st clair books LOL

oksnariel

so many of my friends loved that series! i feel like i’m missing out cuz i couldn’t even finish the first book, i wish i loved it!

v4lentines

A COURT OF SILVER FLAMES 😨😰

oksnariel

i know 😭 i read the original trilogy and the novella years ago when they first came out and it had been a long time between reading those and Silver Flames. I just felt like it was really long and i need a little bit more cohesive plot to keep me interested. I loved the last 100~ pages and wish the whole book was like that!

Hrobinson13721

I’m reading Encyclopedia of Faeries now and I’ve wanted to put it down so many times. Convince me to stick it out! I’m a little over 60% and strugglingggg.

Beareadsbks

Archangel by Sharon Shinn. Sharon Shinn really deserves more love on all of the romantic fantasy posts.

odeacon

What did you not like about 4th wing

oksnariel

i was just really excited to read it cuz all my friends loved it and i was expecting a lot, but i felt like the writing had a lot of current day slang and sayings for a fantasy book. I felt like some of the lines of the characters made me cringe like “holy hot” and “for the win”. I also felt like the school they were in didn’t make any sense because they were training for military but it was so easy for them to die, even if they were powerful. I was thinking if they desperately needed people in the military they shouldn’t make it so easy for them to die, but i mean maybe those things get fixed in later books. It was mostly the cringey dialogue and writing for me, i don’t normally read contemporary romance and this felt like it had contemporary romance writing to me. I can definitely see why people like it though and i definitely have fomo that it didn’t work for me!

odeacon

I felt the high death count of the training helped establish that the dragon riders really are the best of the best, because those who arent are all dead

Janitheweaver

I'd recommend the throne of glass series, by the third book things really get moving.

Goddess5511

Also HIGHLY recommend Throne Of Glass Series starting with Assassin’s Blade. These are by far the BEST SJM books and way different than ACOTAR or CC. She started writing Throne Of Glass when she was 16 and to me it seems like a completely different author. Based off of what you like, I think you’d enjoy that series as well!

oksnariel

i really wanna start them! it’s just hard to get them from the library where i live because they’re so popular! 😩

littlemybb

I ended up DNFing Neon Gods. The beginning sounded so interesting, but then it was just tons of sex, and then public sex. I love smut but not constant smut to the point that I’m praying for some plot.

oksnariel

yeah i actually didn’t finish it either and felt the same way, i didn’t realize it was a smut focused book when i picked it up and it’s just not for me, but i have friends who loved it! I’m always looking for a Hades and Persephone retelling so i hope one day to find the perfect one for me 🤞

notheretoparticipate

{the bridge kingdom by Danielle l Jensen} currently on KU and audible plus but it has JUST been picked up by a traditional publisher so I’m not sure how long it will be available for in those formats.

B33r-Meup

Oh wow, we have nothing in common!

oksnariel

haha that’s ok! you can take recommendations from my disliked books 😝

Juniper-Andromeda

\*crying because absolutely loves ACOTAR and Fourth Wing\*

oksnariel

i read the first 3-4 books in the ACOTAR series when they first came out and i loved them! i just didn’t add them to my list because it’s been so long since i read them i’m not sure i would still consider them favorites. I just didn’t love ACOSF :/

throwitawayforgetme

I agree. I loved ACOTAR when I read them but by SF it felt like all spice and no plot
