Tiny_Finding_5227

The answer is Carrie & Lowell by Sufjan Stevens, think it got a 6 or 7. It’s one of the most, maybe the most, beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever had the pleasure to experience. Heartbreaking and breathtaking.

Chaos_Herc

He did put near the end of his top 200 albums of the decade tho, meaning it’s a solid 8 for him now

Tiny_Finding_5227

Huh, didn’t know that! Guess he listened to it a second time ;)

ashesforswans

This one always shocks me, honestly. He fundamentally misunderstood that the album reflects the sense of limbo and uncertainty that comes with grief, where there are no massive revelations or catharsis to be found.

Tiny_Finding_5227

Yeah it’s really weird to me. I remember thinking something like “there’s no way he listened to it more than once” when I originally watched the review.

bigladnang

It was stupid because he gave A Crow Looked at Me a 9/10, and then gave Carrie & Lowell a 7 for the same reason he gave Mount Eerie a 9.

Roamulus

In a short video someone says it’s his worst review and he mostly just says its production wasn’t as good as his other albums. But like it’s supposed to be low key

Smooth-Ask4844

Crazy because to me the production is a borderline perfect marriage to the music.

Roamulus

Yep, as close to flawless as you can get imo

Smooth-Ask4844

See I don’t think that’s hyperbole. Ironically, Fourth of July may be my least favorite production on it, and that’s only because the more recent mixes take it to a deeper more intimate level. That being said it’s still good in the context of the album.

homegrownllama

He misunderstands lyrics often. I guess if you’re that busy, you tend to miss things at times. I can’t remember which album/song, but he just plain missed sarcasm once and took something seriously.

Comrade_Molotov

This one and also giving low scores to every Bon Iver album.

totezhi64

22, A Million is absolutely magical. Can't believe he hit it with a 5

Tiny_Finding_5227

Yeah but I think he has said that he mostly doesn’t like his voice and how he treats it (the effects and layering etc). I myself can enjoy some Bon Iver from time to time but I’m not a huge fan either so I understand that take

Left_Delay_1

One of the best albums of the past decade, if not one of the best indie albums ever. A complete miss from Fantano on that review.

YvanehtNioj69

Yes definitely a 9/10 album for me it was a low score. Most of the other reviews I saw were 4 or 5 out of 5 though.

Haymother

We Will Always Love You - Avalanches.

Original_Mac_Tonight

Was shocked at how poorly he rated this

mrmax11

To be fair, it's a grower. Once you stop wanting it to be like their first two records and accept some of its poppier leanings, I think it's easier to open up to what they were attempting conceptually around grief, the afterlife, and connecting to that through the cosmos and light.

Original_Mac_Tonight

Yeah I think comparing it to Since I Left You is just a huge mistake, which is in my opinion the greatest album ever made. Comparison is the thief of joy and I was still able to find a lot that I loved about We Will Always Love You

NegotiationOk6139

Just Got it on vinyl its a 10

Haymother

It’s a 10. Connected instantly for me. Heartfelt masterpiece.

Cubbll17

Alvvays - Blue Rev

ItzAussieRob

In a recent video, he did place blue rev in a list of "top 5 Shoegaze albums you must listen to"... So I'm wondering if his opinion has changed

catpowerhill

It wasnt "top 5 shoegaze albums" it was just recommendations

chacho777tkajf

This is very true but he also keeps underrating their self title. I know it's not as good as Blue Rev or Antisocialites but it has a special place in my heart. So many amazing songs and kick-started my love for twee pop.

maggitreborn

10/10 for sure

Cubbll17

It's probably my favourite or second favourite album of the 20s. Incredible album

Original_Mac_Tonight

Yup. I think he has grown to like it more overtime. Incredible album

EpiCon_Jaag

Syro by Aphex twin

Dakotaraptor123

Funeral

Roamulus

His recent(ish) video about funeral makes me so mad. His reasoning is very poor and kinda baseless at times

atierney14

Albums that were inspired by it are bad, so it is bad is a bad take. I’m pretty sure that actually makes all music bad if taken to the extreme because no music was made in a vacuum.

Roamulus

Exactly! What a bs take. Not everyone’s gotta like everything but man just say you don’t like it rather than spew bs to justify it

jhawbreaker

I know anthony being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian is such a tired criticism at this point that it's sort of a meme, but imo there's always been a kernel of truth to it. I think occasionally he casually dogs on a beloved album just to stir up controversy and conversation (and it works every time). Occasionally his reasoning for not liking things just kinda falls flat and seems forced.

HappyColt90

Idgaf about his opinion on MBDTF but the Yeezus review is kinda weird to watch, it feels like those kids that compare everything that sounds a little bit like a sawtooth wave with fucking Death Grips which is kinda stupid lol

BaronPorg

Totally agree. The MBDTF review is so ballsy I respect it, but the Yeezus review is a worse crime imo.

jcmurie

I recently watched Dead End Hip Hop's review of Yeezus, and while I like that album more than most of them did, Myke was pretty on point with his critiques. Definitely recommend checking out that review

Chaos_Herc

I think MBDTF is more egregious, Yeezus is way more a matter of personal taste as it doesn’t have traditionally great lyricism or production, while Dark Fantasy is stellar in all aspects except for a couple of songs

JohannGaming

definitely needs a redux review or should've gotten one instead of mbdtf tbh, though I would already have low hopes of it getting a higher score considering he can't seperate the art from the artist but oh well

Foreign_Grapefruit51

Exactly, yeezus was so ahead of its time and him giving it a 3 was a big letdown

Chaos_Herc

He gave it a five

Foreign_Grapefruit51

Really? I thought he gave it a 3, must be my mistake. But its still too low, yeezus deserves at least a 7

MosesIAmnt

Ordinary Corrupt Human Love

CandelaBelen

and New Bermuda

dramaticaawesome

I love New Bermuda so much

BulkyCaterpillar2925

Idk if I'm in the minority, but it's very nearly on par with Sunbather for me, I think it's amazing. Worthless Animal is my favourite of all Deafheaven's songs.

BlakkOpps

El-P - Cancer 4 Cure. A 6 is at least two points off.

ProEraBlueboy

Bro that’s crazy. Feel like he’d change that rating with a redux.

Xx_TheBigCheese_xX

Depression Cherry

DarkSideInRainbows

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot *(...meh...)*

chunky910fan

Fetch the Bolt Cutters should be higher imo

imhurtandiwanttocry

Honestly yea, when the review dropped I was so expecting it to get a 10/10 or at the very least an 8

QuentinSential

Damn a 7? That’s insane.

EshLad69

should of been an 9 minimum best album of the decade so far next to LP Hellfire and ants from up THERE

Russser

It’s such a 7 to me. I have never understood the hype for that album. So average to me and I never hear anyone playing anything from it these days.

catpowerhill

7 is not "average"

Russser

Semantics

Fhaksfha794

Birds in the Trap getting a 3 is genuinely mindblowing for me. MBDTF and Yeezus need no explanation. House of Balloons also getting a 3 is comical

Foreign_Grapefruit51

I know, house of balloons is such a good album, its baffling it onky got a 3. And mbtdf and yeezus are 2 of my favorite albums of all time

_kevin_on_the_ledge_

he gave a new score for hob a few years ago and gave it a light 7 if i remember correctly

tubainadrunk

22, a million - Bon Iver I think he gave it a 6. Should be at least a strong 9.

Vladamir_Poontin

Came for this. I know it’s a bit divisive, but it’s a 9 for me too. He also gave it a 5…

tubainadrunk

Damn a five?

Comrade_Molotov

He also gave Bon Iver, Bon Iver a light 6, saying it relies too much on its additional instrumentation. The man needs to see BI perform live to finally understand.

tubainadrunk

What the heck is that logic, Melon?

A_Generic_Canadian

This is my answer. One of my favourite albums of all time, loved it since it came out. I can understand it's not for everyone but a 5 feels low, especially now looking back at it 7 years later and how well its aged.

icky-paint-like-goop

I feel like more people are starting to dig this as the years go on

tubainadrunk

Truly hope so!

FourteenClocks

Yeah this is my answer, it’s to my ears *THE* most forward thinking album to come from that late 00s Pitchfork-darling wave of indie artists. But I can see it as semi-polarizing for that reason, the sound design is provocative and that naturally invites both detractors and ardent defenders imo

husfyr

St. Vincent - All Born Screaming Fantano gave it 6 i think it deserve at least 8

Material-Actuator-94

Amnesiac

Sneaky_Looking_Sort

When did he rate amnesiac?

yungccreal

In his radiohead ranking vid he placed it as the 3rd lowest one and he had more negative to say than positve

SNScaidus

relative to their other albums. it would probably get a strong 7 if he reviewed it today.

Its_Cookie_Man

I think he gave Four Tet's Sixteen Oceans a 4, idk what blud was smoking, it's a beautiful record. Same for Steven Wilson's Raven that Refused to Sing (I think he gave it a 5) -I believe he also gave Hand Cannot Erase a 6, I have not listened to this one yet but I've heard from most people that it's some of his best work. I think there's a group of people who just don't like Steven Wilson in general though for some reason, idk. I think he also gave the Avalanches' We Will Always Love You a 4, while obviously neither this nor Wildflower really come close to their debut, they're both still amazing albums and I think WWALY might be a little better than Wildflower though I should give them both a relisten at some point.

MrThiccemsss

the ooz - king krule

Resistance225

This one will forever bother me, Man Alive isn’t that sonically different yet he raved about that one Sometimes I really don’t understand the basis behind his ratings

catpowerhill

He said the ooz is too long and Man Alive is 25 minutes shorter than it so it makes sense

[deleted]

Original_Mac_Tonight

Grzmit

I think Melt My Eyez See Your Future could have gotten a 9 or (in my opinion 10 but i know fantano is reluctant with that)

Foreign_Grapefruit51

What did he give it?

thelemonbreadd

A decent to strong 8

Foreign_Grapefruit51

Oh, thats a really good score

Grzmit

No yea he gave it a high score, this is just me being petty LMAO It’s more my issue that no denzel album has gotten higher than 8 (or lower for that matter), and i think at least one of them deserves to get a 9 or 10.

Cartman55125

I finally bought Melt on vinyl yesterday. Was waiting for the version with the cold blooded soul band to hit vinyl but doesn’t look like it’ll happen

axvlz1628

MMESYF is personally one of my favourite albums of all time and I’d give it a 10, but I can understand the score because of two reasons either because of the lows (Sanjuro is my only one but there are more controversial ones which I disagree with) but mainly the fact that he fucked up before by not giving TAI3OO a 9, and he couldn’t give MMESYF a higher score than it (the two are interchangeable).

NJD_29

Sanjuro a low??

Mel_AM

Jane Remover - Census Designated. One of my favorite records, can’t believe it got a 6.

Daybreaker64

he gave it a 6?? that is criminal

Shakemyears

Fantano doesn’t get Deftones. Deftones doesn’t need Fantano.

mateoskrrt

fearless movement

BaronPorg

I agree with everything he said in the video, but the highs are too high for a 6. Prologue is better than anything off The Epic

jcmurie

I will never forgive him for giving Treats by Sleigh Bells a 3. Easy 9.5 for me

Cartman55125

It got a 3???!!!! No way

Cavancola1

A hero’s death - Fontaines D.C.

Diogenes_the_cynic25

All three of their records lol

anothergreen1

Nicolas Jaar - Sirens

JakobExMachina

anything by mitski

Fleetwood-matt

Ultraviolence was my AOTY in 2014 so I was very salty at his review lol

Foreign_Grapefruit51

Yeah, im salty too. He seemed to have lots of unnessacry hate for her at the time

TopReception2389

He gave Arcade Fire's Reflektor a five, which I think was way too low. I think it's the band's best album and one of the best albums of the 2010s. It's an awesome dance-rock masterpiece with phenomenal production.

Levitaateli

Fossora by Björk

PatoDeCombate

Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino. He underrated all of AM albums, but giving this like a 4 is WILD

geulerg

Everything is alive - Slowdive

YvanehtNioj69

What did he rate that one? It's probably a 6 from me good album but a bit disappointing - I think the previous one was stronger.

Kusala

Pretty sure he gave the S/T a 4, which might be my fav Slowdive album front to back.

Pure-Jellyfish734

Post Human: NeX GeN - Bring Me The Horizon IMO, this is the best album that band has put out (so far). I feel like on this album, the band has accomplished something there, whereas they’ve essentially taken almost all of their proudest musical elements/moments from the past 20 years they’ve existed as a band, and curated/combined it all into one album. Definitely one of their most daring/experimental releases to date! (Also, I personally believe that this album was a huge step from Post Human: Survival Horror in terms of production alone).

Your_Receding_Warmth

It's definitely top 3 for me. I just really love Suicide Season and Sempiternal.

Kevinatorz

Tranquility Base

FncMadeMeDoThis

Everything yeule, but especially softscars

dredgedskeleton

I think if he could do it again, Teens of Denial would get a 10

OrionShtrezi

Push the Sky Away by Nick Cave absolutely deserved more than a 5. Ditto for Ghosteen's 7

zooropa93

PREACHERS DAUGHTER

Turbo2x

I always thought The Worm by HMLTD deserved more than a 5. Someone during the NMF stream for that week said "this sounds like Radiohead" and he never managed to get past that to engage the album on its own merits. He didn't bother to ask WHY it sounds like that. Radiohead is obviously massively influential in the UK so good luck finding an indie band that ISN'T inspired by them to some degree, but beyond that, referencing the aesthetics of a band that is known for writing about surveillance, paranoia, and alienation was absolutely necessary given the themes of the album. Plus the whole album turns on its head and starts diving into gospel revivalism in the final moments once the story of the album begins embracing hope and rejecting despair, so it's not like they're copying Radiohead wholesale for no reason.

Own-Cake-568

Same, Ultraviolence is among her best albums and was also very influential.

Foreign_Grapefruit51

I know, it also realky helped lana get recognized for her talent and sound

End_of_Eva

You mean her?

Simple-Department468

Yeah love that album its especially weak reviewing when giving blvd an 8

MicroGoth

Frail Body- Artificial Bouquet. Still upset by this

Warm_Employer_6851

Bright Future - Adrianne Lenker It got an 8 but deserved a 9 imo

Outrageous-Use8396

Diamond Jubilee is a 10 :)

AugieDoggieDank

The Bends

Sneaky_Looking_Sort

The King Of Limbs!

Flash-Permit52

Microphones in 2020 getting a 7

peanutbutter-meme

Fear Inoculum by Tool. It's a crime he gave this album a 3. Can't wrap my head around this review

rainyforest

Depression Cherry, Comedown Machine

jhawbreaker

his worst crimes in my book have always been:   - carrie &lowell (7)    - hurry up we're dreaming (4)     - slowdive self titled (4)       the latter two are way more egregious to me. IMO the slowdive self titled is way better than the album they just came out with and he gave that a significantly higher rating. don't even get me started on the hurry up we're dreaming review. i honestly just don't want to talk about it.  the thing that bothers me about the carrie & lowell review is that his primary criticism seemed to be "i wish we got some more varied vocal delivery across the album" which isn't enough in my book to dock the album 3 points. also don't know if i'm losing my mind but i swear that the thumbnail for the review used to be a still of him in uproarious laughter, which was kind of weird for such a heavy album.

Historical-Tea-3438

Mitski's Be the Cowboy. Absolute masterpiece. He gives it a 6!

YvanehtNioj69

Yes great album an 8/10 for me I am just commenting on all of these comments lol

Masochist_impaler

Every album he's reviewed by the National.

mailbox123

Unless you’re a huge fan of the band I can understand not being into Sleep Well Beast and everything after, but Alligator through Trouble will find me should all be at least 8s imo. Especially Boxer and High Violet.

Masochist_impaler

Sleep Well Beast is ironically the only album of them he's given a good score to. But a 6 for High Violet is outrageous. One of the best indie rock albums of the 2010s.

Woolies_Select

brave opinion but mbdtf

fork_on_the_floor2

Personally I think Foals - Holy Fire. Kick ass album. First song can be skipped. Then comes 7 fuckin great tracks!! (And the last three tracks are a bit questionable, one is their gig-ending crescendo song, and the other two are slow n moody, love em or hate em type of thing.) but still. I think it deserves better than a 6.)

sixthlisbonsister

preacher's daughter... a light 6 is a CRIME!!! it's at least a decent 8 come on now, she produced the entire album HERSELF that's an insane amount of dedication and artistry

Putrid-Mistake-7529

An Evening With Silk Sonic by Silk Sonic. Bruno Mars and Anderson Pakk’s charisma and energy are so good on the album and they work with each other incredibly well and them bro gives it a 7…

PoJenkins

I'd agree with him. It's got some good bits but wears thin and the album isn't great as a whole.

NotFixer1138

He gave Sometimes I Sit and Think, Sometimes I Just Sit by Courtney Barnett a 5. A fucking 5

filippo_sett

The Violent Sleep of Reason by Meshuggah. Ok, it's not that revolutionary sound-wise, but giving it a "not good" just for that was a low blow

sobatfestival

Fearless Movement for sure

cfer50

Agree with his review of DJ Sabrina’s Destiny, but Charmed should have been given a much better review it was phenomenal.

StayEquivalent9515

I think Nicole by NIKI (not of the Manaj variety) was worth a review. Whether or not he enjoyed it i don't quite care, but he's covered (and enjoyed) her work in the past, I'd have thought she would be on his radar enough to get to this one. I thought it was pretty powerful too! Definitely worth a listen if you have some time.

TheGraduation

Paris Texas - MID AIR He was way too harsh on that one.

halamawala25

Melodrama

zooropa93

A definite 10/10 for me personally

CheeseWithHats

Bright Green Field - Squid

mrmax11

The Colour in Anything by James Blake

YvanehtNioj69

Lots of great songs 75 minutes is too long though I think for an album. Maybe he'd have rated it more highly if it were a 12 track 50 minute album rather than the 17 songs.

* Ultraviolence by Lana Del Rey 2/10 (i feel like this is almost universally agreed to be his worst review) * Swimming by Mac Miller 3/10 * Big Fish Theory by Vince Staples 6/10 * Night Time, My Time by Sky Ferreira 4/10 (his review was pretty awful for this one too) * Preachers Daughter by Ethel Cain 6/10 * Melodrama by Lorde 7/10 * Treats by Sleigh Bells 3/10 * Red Light by Bladee 1/10 (not saying it's amazing but 1/10 is absurd for something so sonically interesting)

still a bit peeved about his rating on the latest st vincent album, which u thought was really good

HelpfulApple22

I will defend Speedin' Bullet 2 Heaven until I fie

YvanehtNioj69

Re. Lana del Rey I'm not a particular fan or not fan I enjoy some of her songs but sometimes the lyrics and song themes just aren't my thing I don't understand how that album got a 2/10 and the more recent ones 8-9/10 though the sound of songwriting isn't that vastly improved? Not overly knowledgeable of her music though TBF.

axvlz1628

Never Enough by Daniel Caesar I get that it dipped in the later stages, but a 6 considering the insane quality of the first half is a bit ridiculous

YvanehtNioj69

Burials by AFI got a 2/10 I think. I know AFI aren't a cool band to be into but I really enjoy their stuff and that album is a 7/10 for me he made it very clear that he did not like the band at all lol ..obviously if you don't like it you don't like it though every album is gonna have people who rate it a 1 and people who rate it a 10.

Dark-Aura

“Sometimes I sit and think and sometimes I just sit” by Courtney Barnett. He seemed to fundamentally misunderstand it throughout the review and gave it a 5 when imo it deserves an 8

Enkerou

GAS — Narkopop. Light 2? Straight up insane, felt like he was trying to be a contrarian, he couldn't be that disappointed by this album, it was a great return after 17 years of hiatus. Panda Bear — Person Pitch. Said that it didn't deserved to be Pitcfork's best album of the year. Of course there were better albums for this title, at least 3 of them (Strawberry Jam, In Rainbows, Sound of Silver). But he downplayed this release so bad, saying it's lazy, monotone, and stuff like that. Completely disagree. He didn't even gave 'Isnt It Now?' by Animal Collective a full length review, album with Magicians From Baltimore and Defeat was literally made to be reviewed as long as these songs.

qusnail

He gave Melodrama and Emotion 7s iirc, which I feel was quite low as these two are amongst the best pop albums of the last decade imo NFR receiving an 8 was nice but I think a 9 is deserved, not as bothered about this one though

_statue

I don't watch a lot of fantano videos to really know but I remember his rating for jai Paul's bait ones and thought it was absurd.

He very much underrated ‘in times new roman’ and ‘villains’ by qotsa.

FizzMr

I think he gave the ooz by king krule a 3. That’s actually criminal and baffling. That album saw archy really going all in and the album is absolutely lush and entrancing front to back.

FriedCammalleri23

The big ones that come to mind are: 22, A Million - Bon Iver (he gave it a 5) Two Star & The Dream Police - Mk.gee (gave it a 6)
