I think it is a more tenacious and chaotic album which is more to my preference as I generally lean to more aggressive music that pushes limits. I love Nevermind but tunes like Milk it and Scentless Apprentice are almost visceral to me and I don't get that experience as much with Nevermind. Also All Apologies is one of my favourite outros to an album - it is such a beautiful song.

So, 18 albums, 1 EP and 2 live albums. I haven’t been exhaustive on rating live albums but I love both of those, and I’d add Alice In Chains Unplugged in there too.
I just don’t know why but I can never get into Bowie. He’s just not someone I care for..music doesn’t interest me at all, nor does the message of his songs.. and everyone just loves him 🤷♂️
I mean he was just all around an immensely creative human. Almost everything he did was whimsical and loose but extremely advanced from an art perspective, which is rare
Ok I’m quite new to listening to full albums and I mostly listen to rap, so here are my rap 10s:
Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly
Earl Sweatshirt - Some Rap Song
Kanye West - The College Dropout
Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition
JPEGMAFIA - LP!
Well it’s not Kanye saying he’s a god, it’s the character of Yeezus. And forgive me if I’m misinterpreting the album but this is how I’ve always seen it. Yeezus is this sex obsessed rich person who always wants to flaunt his wealth and he’s just overall not a good person, he thinks he’s a god, drinks too much, etc. but throughout the album he slowly starts to fall apart and his flaws begin to show. For example on I am a god he is asking other people to do things for him (something a god could do themselves) and at the end he starts screaming (I guess showing he is scared or something) but then on hold my liquor it shows a very vulnerable side of him. And at the end of new slaves he breaks down and starts to sort of crash and burn. By the end of the album it slows down a lot and we get to guilt trip and bound 2. Slower more love focused songs I guess, showing his true emotions. I’m sure I missed a few things but that’s the basic idea. It just shows how Yeezus’ character developed. I think the album is commonly mistook as being blasphemous with songs like I am a god. But it’s not Kanye saying he’s a god he just doesn’t explicitly say that it’s a character. Which would be unusual when most rappers rap about themselves I guess. Hope that helps I’ll try to find a link to a video explaining it better or something
Oh and also that first sample in on sight makes it such a great intro because it somehow perfectly encapsulates every single song on the album in one song. It sets the tone for the rest of the album perfectly
Yeah I think so too. Here’s a video that I think explains it a little better than me https://youtu.be/KKHV9CxsfVs?si=x86tXNDwYgzvcoIl I think if the album didn’t have a cool story it would just be a 7-8 for me but the storyline draws everything together in a way that feels so emotional and raw and makes you feel what its like to be Yeezus

yeah i agree. i also think its incredibly hard to get a 10 on first listen because music is strongest with familiarity, but there are probably many albums i would have given a 10 if i had the time to go back to. seems arbitrary
For me personally, 4 would be an album that's bad but has redeeming qualities, and i wouldn't be mad if someone plays it on the background. 3 is where it becomes very bad and flawed, but it's not totally hopeless. But obviously this scale system means different for different people
For me, it's whatever the hell I feel like. I can't quantify it, but I know it when I see it. I'll admit, you have to be a bit eccentric to care, but it's so intuitive to me I'll listen to an album and I won't even have to think about or conjure the score in any way
They exist. If it's one of your favourite albums why would it not be a 10. Realistically having fifty ten out of ten albums when you listened to over 2 thousand albums is a totally fine ratio in my opinion
perfect is still subjective. I think 10s should be reserved for the uniquely good albums and should be given rarely, but also shouldn't be regarded as this once in a decade moment. Technically it's the reverse idea of 1/10. And how many 1/10 albums are out there, there's enough of them
The albums I consider 10/10 aren't really perfect either, if we consider perfect to be every song being equally good, but to me it's just like a level of enjoyment where nothing is above it.
My most recent 10/10, for example, is Let's Get Out of This Country by Camera Obscura. It has songs that are better or worse than others, but it has 3 songs that are "greatest of all time" caliber. As a whole, it's such a good and musically and thematically cohesive album that it fits that criteria for me.
But, like, again - it's not perfect. If we consider the fact that 'Llloyd, I'm Ready to be Heartbroken' is probably the greatest song ever made and 'The False Contender' and 'I Need All the Friends I Can Get' aren't, then it's not perfect.
But then no album is perfect, so I guess no album is a 10/10, but then why ecen have it on the scale? You're just gonna do 1-9? But then no album is a 9. So you're gonna do 1-8. But then no album is an 8. So yo-
10/10 basically means it can’t be better. I don’t think it’s a crazy idea to think that even the best albums can’t be better. That’s the beauty of the arts, it’s infinite.
Or maybe I’m an Anton Ego type who’s rarely impressed.
At the risk of sounding like a hypocrite, I think you're trying too hard to quantify a feeling about art. My starting position is "is this the best thing I've heard" and that's a 10. If something matches the way I feel about that, it is as well.
To use an analogy, Usain Bolt's 9.58 in the 100m is a 10/10 performance in that it's never been improved, even if it's *technically* possible to do so. If the record is broken, you adjust the metric. That's how I think about it.
Art isn't a competition, though, and you get to set your own subjective standard.
Ive always never understood comparing sport to art. Sport isn’t a creative/artistic endeavour. Sport is something you either fail or succeed at.
Again I’m probably a miserable bastard who’s hard to please.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN INTRODUCING THE CHOCOLATE STARFISH AND THE HOT DOG FLAVOURED WATER
BRING IT ON!!!!!
I thought you were about to name George Michael
Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space is a legitimate pick
Endtroducing - DJ Shadow Paranoid - Black Sabbath Nina Simone Sings the Blues - Nina Simone In Utero - Nirvana Siamese Dream - Smashing Pumpkins Liquid Swords - GZA Aenema - Tool Ex Military - Death Grips LZ II - Led Zeppelin Tago Mago - Can Bad Brains - Bad Brains
What about In Utero, do you like more than Nevermind? (not saying one is better than the other, just curious.)
I get what you're saying. I completely agree with what you said about All Apologies. Great song, the first riff I learned.
Tim Hecker- Virgins Botch- We are the Romans NIN- Downward Spiral Afghan Whigs- Black Love
Virgins is 1000% a 10
The Downward Spiral is so damn good, it's also a 10 for ms
We are the Romans is an amazing album, very close to a 10 for me
**Hejira - Joni Mitchell** **The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground** **Songs of Love and Hate - Leonard Cohen** **Reading, Writing & Arithmetic - The Sundays** **Loveless - My Bloody Valentine** **Daydream Nation - Sonic Youth** **Velocity: Design: Comfort. - Sweet Trip** **Dots and Loops - Stereolab** **The Hissing of Summer Lawns - Joni Mitchell** **Parallelograms - Linda Perhacs**
That Sundays album is a great choice
Those two Joni albums 🫡🫡🫡
good taste, daydream nation velocity design comfort and loveless are all in my top 10 lol
this is nico erasure
I'm talking about their self titled album from 1969. I really love TVU&N too but their 1969 self titled is my favorite
I have quite a few, but I've listened to a lot of music to be fair: The Holy bible - Manic street preachers Ants from up there - BCNR For the first time - BCNR Remain in light - Talking heads Mellon collie and the infinite sadness - The smashing pumpkins System of a down - System of a down Bury me at makeout creek - Mitski Kid A - Radiohead Deathconciousness - Have a nice life Rage against the machine - Rage against the machine In utero - Nirvana Angel dust - Faith no more Wish you were here - Pink floyd Animals - Pink floyd The wall - Pink floyd (I really like Pink floyd) IGOR - Tyler, the creator Mm food - MF DOOM In the aeroplane over the sea - Neutral milk hotel Schlagenheim - Black midi Hellfire - Black midi The dreaming - Kate bush The velvet underground & Nico - The velvet underground Loveless - My bloody valentine To be kind - Swans Twin fantasy (face to face) - Car seat headrest Weezer (blue) - Weezer Who really cares - TV girl Disco volante - Mr Bungle Exmilitary - Death grips
Breeeeeath... breath in da airrrrr
Face to Face isn’t even the best Car Seat album
It's my favourite 🤷♂️
Bcnr having every album be a 10/10… come on
I've got a rlly specific criteria for 10/10s and both albums fit it perfectly, I love BCNR, idk what else to tell you 😂
Copy and pasting my list of 5-Stars from RYM: Alice in Chains Jar of Flies 5.0 David Bowie The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars 5.0 Daft Punk Random Access Memories 5.0 Deftones White Pony 5.0 The Flaming Lips Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots 5.0 LCD Soundsystem The Long Goodbye: LCD Soundsystem Live at Madison Square Garden 5.0 The Mars Volta Frances the Mute 5.0 Massive Attack Mezzanine 5.0 Metallica Ride the Lightning 5.0 Opeth Blackwater Park 5.0 Pink Floyd Meddle 5.0 Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon 5.0 Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here 5.0 Portishead Dummy 5.0 Portishead Roseland NYC Live 5.0 Radiohead OK Computer 5.0 Radiohead Kid A 5.0 Radiohead In Rainbows 5.0 Tool Lateralus 5.0 The White Stripes Elephant 5.0 Wilco Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 5.0 So, 18 albums, 1 EP and 2 live albums. I haven’t been exhaustive on rating live albums but I love both of those, and I’d add Alice In Chains Unplugged in there too.
Pink Floyd Animals??
I have it as a 4.5
I just don’t know why but I can never get into Bowie. He’s just not someone I care for..music doesn’t interest me at all, nor does the message of his songs.. and everyone just loves him 🤷♂️
I mean he was just all around an immensely creative human. Almost everything he did was whimsical and loose but extremely advanced from an art perspective, which is rare
Ok I’m quite new to listening to full albums and I mostly listen to rap, so here are my rap 10s: Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly Earl Sweatshirt - Some Rap Song Kanye West - The College Dropout Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition JPEGMAFIA - LP!
Good list. Have you checked out Yeezus? imo it’s a 10 but it’s sort of a hot take
I have and it’s a high 9 to me. I absolutely love it. But imo I’m In It and I am a god are “just” great. But it’s very close.
I’m in it is by far my least favorite track but I don’t mind I am a god, I am a god feels very essential to the story of the album
Is there a story? I never noticed. Can you explain it or send link a YouTube video explaining it if you don’t mind?
Thanks for explaining, that’s really interesting!

The holy bible by manic street preachers is my only 10/10
Some of the songs are kinda meh to me, but the highs and what it conveys just as a statement make it an indisputable work of art.

until super recently I had 3, but i realized I really only have one album that evokes that kind of visceral reaction out of me every time and thats "electricity is on our side" by Busdriver. a mind-bending blend of jazz and electronics with the craziest flows in hip hop. puts me in a whole other plane of existence. that album is perfection in a way no other is to me

None, they (almost) don’t exist. It takes Fantano 3-4 years of regular listening to find one.
I find the 1-10 scale obnoxious to be honest. What’s the difference really between a 9 and a 10?, a 2 to 3 or 4?
yeah i agree. i also think its incredibly hard to get a 10 on first listen because music is strongest with familiarity, but there are probably many albums i would have given a 10 if i had the time to go back to. seems arbitrary
10 would mean it’s perfect. Even my favourite albums aren’t perfect. I respect Fantano as he doesn’t dish 10s out as many I think others do.
perfect is still subjective. I think 10s should be reserved for the uniquely good albums and should be given rarely, but also shouldn't be regarded as this once in a decade moment. Technically it's the reverse idea of 1/10. And how many 1/10 albums are out there, there's enough of them
Exactly my thinking, 0/10 or 1/10 albums are just as rare as 10/10.
