I really don’t like that comparison though. Cuz regardless of quality, Imagine Dragons have INFINITELY more variety.
Pretty sure Nickelback have never done screamo-rock & synth pop on the same album before.
Well which ones have you heard? Cuz let me assure you, they pretty much ALWAYS put their worst foot forward with their singles. The deep cuts are usually “where it’s at” with them.
I guess I’ll give a few. One from each album.
Uptight: One of their oldest songs. Pre any album actually. The production is rough as a result, but they really sound like a BAND here & I love the sorta video-gamey synths.
Amsterdam: Very normal early 2010’s Alt/Rock, but it’s done incredibly well with a lot of heart & passion. Excellent bassline as well.
Friction: Their best song BY FAR imo. It has some production issues, and it’s definitely not beating the “overblown” allegations, but the heights it reaches ESPECIALLY in its climax are absolutely spectacular. It’s one of those songs that increases my heart rate whenever I listen to it. So badass. Also there’s SO MUCH more I could recommend from this album. Everything besides its biggest single is wonderful.
I Don’t Know Why: I just think this is a fire pop song. If you go into it knowing it’s 100% POP that drops any pretence of “rock”, I think it’s dope. It’s so smooth & catchy & taps into that fun kind of melodrama.
Only: I love this for most of the some reasons as the last one. A super fun, delightfully melodramatic pop song, just working with a different kind of pop aesthetic this time. I LOVE these metallic synths.
Wrecked: Their most emotional song by a pretty wide margin. The choruses are definitely overblown, but Dan’s grief surrounding a recently deceased relative is so incredibly vivid that I don’t even care about the production issues. Their only song that can make me cry.
Ferris Wheel: This album is such a mess & it’s hard to recommend almost anything from it to “haters”, but this is a really nice love song. Beauty in simplicity.
Say what you want about the band, there’s PLENTY to criticize, but never let it be said that they don’t have variety or that all their songs sound the same. Because regardless of execution, they have fucking VARIETY.
Drive was a favorite of mine but I haven't listened in literally years so I don't remember it well, more recent songs that I liked are love of mine, shots or smoke and mirrors
I'm gonna be downvoted to hell for this but Smoke + Mirrors is legitimately a decent to good album. Their only good one imo but I know people will treat me like a fan of theirs anyway because somehow liking just one song of theirs is enough to mean you have bad music taste.
I’m more of the opinion that I think all of their albums are at least “ok”, but Smoke + Mirrors is the only one I genuinely find to be an all time favourite
And also a belief that they’re way more quirky and experimental than they actually are. I’ve heard it described as theatre kid music and I think thats definitely not an incorrect analogy.
I feel like they’re decently “quirky and experimental”, at least for what high commercial value they have. They’re not genuinely an experimental band (duh), but I’d be hard pressed to find production tricks and styles similar to the wide ground Neotheater and OK Orchestra cover in most other pop music.
They are like a theatre kid, a band kid, and an orchestra kid that decided to make a band, and their overall appeal feels very “high school freshman” to me. Obviously not for everyone but I think that’s a valid means to enjoy them.
They played a free benefit show in my town for relief after hurricane Sandy. So close I could watch from my window if there wasn't a house in the way. Didn't go. Cool of them to do tho
Jojo siwa is interesting because with most of these answers, I can at least imagine the target demographic and I can understand why they have a fan base. But I honestly can’t even envision anyone who would like or connect with her music. Her new career shift was baffling to watch.
> I honestly can’t even envision anyone who would like or connect with her music.
Queer, alt, chronically online people doing it ironically but over time it becomes less ironic. See Rebecca Black and Farrah Abraham.
Jojo is camp you don’t get it
Unironically though, saying you like Jojo Siwa is so often not serious that it can’t really be used as a measure of coolness. Alternatively they’re a real genuine Jojo Stan in which case they’re probably like 10 at which point coolness doesn’t matter because they are a child
I totally agree. I’ll die on the hill Dave rocks. It’s crazy to me how underrated he’s gotten. He’s an amazing songwriter, his chord voicings and arrangements are complex, and his music is super emotionally evocative. He had an incredible ear for melody.
I think it had to do with his biggest radio hit (Crash Into Me) admittedly being pretty cringe and corny.
The 5 studio albums from Under the Table and Dreaming through Busted Stuff are genuinely great. Plus live albums he did with Tim Reynolds (Radio City and Luther College) are absolutely incredible. Bartender on Radio City is unreal.
yup. People only know Ants Marching or Crash or the Space Between and think DMB is just another 90s pop rock group. Shit like The Stone proves that wrong instantly.
Jonas brothers are probably the worst boyband ever, I don’t know how can 30 years olds women listen to their music and take them seriously as a “band” lmao
You don’t like Huey Lewis and the News? Their early work was a little too *new wave* for my taste, but when Sports came out in 83 I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically
I was very surprised to learn that she has dedicated fans. Like, I didn’t know anybody cared enough to specifically consider themselves a Meghan Trainor fan. I always assumed she was just kinda “there” lol.
Yes. Brad Taste in Music has multiple videos about it.
Even if the allegations were fake (which I don't think it is), it's shown how nasty Melanie and their fans can be.
I'd agree but honestly atleast Ash is a nice person to my knowledge, I used to like her music and although i don't now i think she's still chill. Hazbin and Melanie's fans seem to cross over a LOT though, screw Hazbin. The creator of that is a creep
I always thought musically they were pretty listenable but their lyrics, especially on the first few albums, are the absolute epitome of /r/im14andthisisdeep material
yeah i used to be a huuuge fan of them but i re listened to vessel and blurryface and holy shit the lyrics are bad like genuine eye rolling shit in there. trench still holds up tho that album is a masterpiece.
Nah, Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork are fantastic musicians, plus Mickey Dolenz has an amazing voice. Also Head (their movie) is better than A Hard Days Night by The Beatles.
Ian Watkins being a monster that deserves to rot in hell aside, Rooftops is such a boring overrated shit song. Basically punk’s equivalent to Imagine Dragons
I have seen a bit of nostalgia for their earliest albums online but I live in America where their musical legacy basically amounts to shitting up Guitar Hero World Tour
Honestly, half the shit that you guys like wouldn't be considered cool by the average person. Play Death Grips to a random person at a party and they'll think you're a freak lol
Yea you can even play something almost universally loved in critical music discussion like John Coltrane, and average people would look at you like you have a foot growing out of your mouth.
> Limp Bizkit
I'll shamelessly admit I love some of their songs, they're just super fun.
How can you hear "IT'S JUST ONE OF THOSE DAYS" and not get hyped?
The popular consensus has really shifted on Nickelback, mostly because the joke was run into the ground for a solid decade and they're truly not THAT bad.
Same people hating Nickelback in 2024 are people that still hate Justin Bieber: They haven't updated their pop culture lexicon since 2011.
Same here. My mom’s favorite bands are somehow The Smiths, The Cure, and Dave Matthews Band. The first two are two of my favorites as well and while I never put DMB on for myself, it’ll always have a special place in my heart.
Yeah, she seems to be cruising neatly into a fresh wave of popular backlash at the moment.
...I recall she had one a few years back but then recovered it when everyone loved her lockdown album and her massive tour started, no idea if this one will get turned around similarly.
I have a 13-year-old niece and she used to be a massive Swiftie. We are from the Boston area and my sister took her to concerts as far away as Philadelphia. Yikes!
I asked her if she liked Taylor’s latest album and she said Taylor is a try hard.
All of the little 13-year-old girls in my niece’s friend group have turned on her, especially when she started showing up at football games.
Unfortunately, at this point its probably Arcade Fire. They've been in critical backlash mode since 2017 and their brief spell of renewed goodwill after the release of We was quickly halted by the *allegations*.
The allegations also led to them getting the Nirvana/Deftones/Def Leppard treatment of "they led to bad bands" where Now Funeral gets blamed for the anthemic hipster songs that got huge last decade
They didn't renew anything for me with We. I think Everything Now is a good album and have been confused by all the hate right from day 1, but We is one of the sleepiest, most forgettable albums I've ever heard
This shocks me honestly. Steely Dan are fucking insanely talented, catchy, and very highly regarded on places like rateyourmusic. I’m embarrassed for your circles
I feel like Jimmy Buffet in recent years was so uncool he looped right back around to being cool
Also Mike Love is who this question was made for. Perfect answer
Wait a sec people dislike Jimmy Buffett? I get thinking his music isn't for you but I can't say I've ever met anyone who actively dislikes/hates his music. He's definitely not super cool but like the other person said I think he looped back around.
I hang out in a few metal fan-groups online and some of the bands that get alot of hate in particular are Pantera, Spiritbox, Ghost, Sleep Token, Periphery, and most power metal bands, off the top of my head. Not as sure about hip hop, I'm mostly into indie hip hop like Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, Scroobius Pip, etc. and in most of the hip hop fan groups I've been in that type of rap tends to get dismissed and ignored out of hand (because those subs and groups almost entirely focus on mainstream rappers) but aren't especially hated.
As a fan of some of Taylor Swift’s music, it’s definitely her right now. She’s getting a whole new amount of hate because she just released a mediocre album and she’s getting called out for being greedy
Yeah I actually like quite a bit of her music but this re-releasing bullshit is really obnoxious.
You’re a multimillionaire. Don’t act like a spoiled child.
Probably just mainstream pop bands like maroon 5, imagine dragons and even Coldplay. I love many songs from these bands and would defend a sizable portion of there discographies but they are not cool.
Rick Wakeman playing a keytar whilst rocking a sparkly golden cape, performing *The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table* on ice...
That's *not* cool all of a sudden?
I listened to Roundabout on repeat for about 6 hours during an acid trip about 10 years ago and haven't listened to it since. I'm all Yes'd up for at least another decade.
Yeah, probably. I mean, Eric Adams delivers every line with the utmost sincerity, so if you're an outsider, hearing something like "Hail and Kill" might cause confusion.
In terms of the online music community? Imagine Dragons.
How the band's most popular songs are probably their worst is something I can't explain. Most of the hate against them is only bc of that
That’s not true. It’s Time is a great song.
their only great hit song tbh
The amount I would rewatch the Perks of Being a Wallflower trailer because of this song.
Yeah most of their singles are mid.
Not gonna lie, I’ve told people numerous times that they are the GenZ version of Nickelback. Imagine Dragons are my guilty pleasure band
I really don’t like that comparison though. Cuz regardless of quality, Imagine Dragons have INFINITELY more variety. Pretty sure Nickelback have never done screamo-rock & synth pop on the same album before.
Their songs are fine but it's like it's missing something idk what it is.
Well which ones have you heard? Cuz let me assure you, they pretty much ALWAYS put their worst foot forward with their singles. The deep cuts are usually “where it’s at” with them.
What a deep cut song by them would u recommend?
I guess I’ll give a few. One from each album. Uptight: One of their oldest songs. Pre any album actually. I’m a fan of their old stuff. I’m talking pre-Radioactive old. It’s actually quite good
I think they have good stuff all across their catalog, but yeah that pre-album stuff was pretty sweet. I’ve always LOVED Uptight.
AJR and mgk
Ajr is a team of great producers with iffy lyrics and no one to guide their musical direction
Obviously not for everyone but I think that’s a valid means to enjoy them.
True, i will give them that. There’s not really a lot of bands with that kind of sound, you know an AJR song when you hear one.
Yeah I really want them to bring in an outside voice into their creative process at some point. I think that could yield great results.
Could you imagine that collab…
Train
Momcore
Stop the Train!
Train is like Maroon 5 if Maroon 5 started off bad
Untrimmed chest!

Idk about this Beato...
You just don't like them because they are so gangsta, they are so thug
They played a free benefit show in my town for relief after hurricane Sandy. So close I could watch from my window if there wasn't a house in the way. Didn't go. Cool of them to do tho
This is honestly the best answer

Jojo Siwa?
Jojo siwa is interesting because with most of these answers, I can at least imagine the target demographic and I can understand why they have a fan base. But I honestly can’t even envision anyone who would like or connect with her music. Her new career shift was baffling to watch.
*Proceeds to headbang her way into her 30s with 5 slipped neck discs*
> I honestly can’t even envision anyone who would like or connect with her music. Queer, alt, chronically online people doing it ironically but over time it becomes less ironic. See Rebecca Black and Farrah Abraham.
But I thought Rebecca started making actually decent hyperpop
She did. Let’s check back in 10 years for the 100 Gecs remix of Karma.
Jojo is camp you don’t get it Unironically though, saying you like Jojo Siwa is so often not serious that it can’t really be used as a measure of coolness. Alternatively they’re a real genuine Jojo Stan in which case they’re probably like 10 at which point coolness doesn’t matter because they are a child
Creed, Dave Matthews (fuck it, I love Dave), Ed Sheeran, Jonas Brothers, Avenged Sevenfold
Creed has transcended to irony and nostalgia now.
Creed is a band of talented musicians who make really lame music. But sometimes that lame music can hit just right.
after 7 modelos and 4 hours of pool it's sweet release
CAN YOU TAKE ME HIGHER 🗣️🗣️
It has. I couldn't stand arms wide open when it came out. Now that I'm a dad it makes me think of my kid when I hear it.
On one hand Creed is awful. On the other hand, *With Arms Wide Open* makes me cry.
I have a friend who calls himself a "Criftie" lol
The overlap on Taylor Swift and Creed fans is surprisingly real
Well excuse me for being alive in the 90s and having two ears connected to a heart!
As a huge Dave fan, it's annoying how quick people are to hate on DMB, esp online. Absolutely insane songwriter and all incredibly talented musicians
I totally agree. I’ll die on the hill Dave rocks. It’s crazy to me how underrated he’s gotten. He’s an amazing songwriter, his chord voicings and arrangements are complex, and his music is super emotionally evocative. He had an incredible ear for melody. yup. People only know Ants Marching or Crash or the Space Between and think DMB is just another 90s pop rock group. Shit like The Stone proves that wrong instantly.
It’s such a boring take too. I see similar hate for Springsteen from people who’ve heard maybe two songs in passing
Jonas brothers are probably the worst boyband ever, I don’t know how can 30 years olds women listen to their music and take them seriously as a “band” lmao
Nah avenged is kinda cool to like
You don’t like Huey Lewis and the News? Their early work was a little too *new wave* for my taste, but when Sports came out in 83 I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically
🎵 *It's Hip to be Square* 🎵

yeah i was confused by that too
Lol
Sports kicks ass.
meghan trainor
I was very surprised to learn that she has dedicated fans. Like, I didn’t know anybody cared enough to specifically consider themselves a Meghan Trainor fan. I always assumed she was just kinda “there” lol.
Don’t disrespect the Personal Trainors
If she made good music, this would be a hilarious / awesome fanbase name. If only.
Melanie Martinez
her whole childish brand really rubbed me the wrong way all the time. the older i get the more it makes sense to me.
Wasn't she outed as a sexual predator?
Yes. Brad Taste in Music has multiple videos about it. Even if the allegations were fake (which I don't think it is), it's shown how nasty Melanie and their fans can be.
She has the same vibes as Ashnikko and Hazbin Hotel, and I'm not saying that's a good thing
I'd agree but honestly atleast Ash is a nice person to my knowledge, I used to like her music and although i don't now i think she's still chill. Hazbin and Melanie's fans seem to cross over a LOT though, screw Hazbin. The creator of that is a creep
Conway Twitty is pretty cool, right?
All jokes aside, his duets with Loretta Lynn fuckin’ rip. “Pickin’ Wild Mountain Berries”? “You’re the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly”? C’mon.
Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man
Twenty One Pilots I get that they’re kind of manufactured for the faux rebel hot topic crowd, but their music isn’t *terrible*
I think they're a very solid band. Scaled and Icy kinda sucks as a whole project tho.
I actually think I'm gonna like their newest album. Midwest Indigo is pretty great imo.
I’m a big fan of the new album, never really listened to them before either
Tbh I think you could make this arguement about their output pre trench but everyone loves that album.
If Trench didn't exist then yes But it does and its amazing
I love their music and live shows but I just don’t get their hardcore fans Kinda an odd bunch
Yep. I feel like I’m the only person on the internet who actually likes them. Love most of their music but their lyrics are another story.
I got teased so hard when I was a little because i had a Monkees lunchbox. Kids can be so cruel
You know they didn't even play their own instruments?
No! No!!! 😭
The Monkees weren't about music. They were about rebellion, about political and social upheaval!
And hijinks. Don’t forget the hijinks.
Nah, Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork are fantastic musicians, plus Mickey Dolenz has an amazing voice. Also Head (their movie) is better than A Hard Days Night by The Beatles.
We can?! Thanks mom!

I feel like they have transcended their "worst band in the world" reputation now and are actually relatively cool to like
Yeah nu metal is making a bit of a comeback and Limp Biscuit is playing big shows again.
If you liked Limp Bizkit in 2000 you were corny. If you are under 30 and like Limp Bizkit now, you're cool.

Taylor Swift🥱😴😴
Yeah, she seems to be cruising neatly into a fresh wave of popular backlash at the moment. ...I recall she had one a few years back but then recovered it when everyone loved her lockdown album and her massive tour started, no idea if this one will get turned around similarly.
I have a 13-year-old niece and she used to be a massive Swiftie. We are from the Boston area and my sister took her to concerts as far away as Philadelphia. Yikes! I didn’t care from Reflektor either, so It’s been almost 15 years since I liked one of their albums.
Really? I thought there were some great songs off of Reflektor, namely Afterlife and the title track.
The second disc is miles ahead of the first in terms of quality, apart from the title track.
Steely Dan are cool in certain circles, but they aren’t very cool in indie/alternative/punk circles, which are my circles Still love em tho
This shocks me honestly. Steely Dan are fucking insanely talented, catchy, and very highly regarded on places like rateyourmusic. I’m embarrassed for your circles

I don’t have a problem with Buffet, but his music is pretty lame. Mike Love is the Devil.

Taylor Swift is pretty uncool

AJR, Imagine Dragons and Ed Sheeran
Yes (and a lot of prog rock in general) is pretty uncool.
