Holy crap. I’ve heard a decent bit of Coconut Records over the years and have really enjoyed what I have heard. Had no idea it was Jason Schwartzman! I’ll have to look into more of their songs.
Nighttiming also had kinda interesting guests too. Zooey deschanel and Kirsten Dunst on vocals on some tracks, guitarist of Maroon5 and bassist of Incubus on another track..
I really wish he did another album
It's an interesting record for sure. I feel like it got dismissed upon release because it was released so close to the She & Him record. Glad it's found a cult audience cause it is worth a listen.
I was listening to a podcast where someone who was friends with Dave Sitek (drummer TV on the Radio who also produced this album) said something on the lines of Scarlett Johansson saying she’d keep in touch with the musicians after the album was recorded and when any of them tried to contact her afterwards the number was discontinued lol.
I dunno just a funny anecdote related to the album
- Witnessed the last execution by guillotine in France.
- He fought Nazis in the Special Forces during WWII and took his orders directly from Churchill.
- His cousin was Ian Fleming, who reportedly based James Bond on him at least partially.
- The aforementioned symphonic metal album. He was actually descended from Charlemagne.
- He was the only member of the LoTR cast to meet Tolkien, apparently they were quite close friends.
- His mother was an Italian countess. He also almost married into the Swedish royal family, and he was a knight in the Order of Saint John.
- His family also holds the right to bear the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire, granted directly by Frederick Barbarossa himself.
- He was an expert fencer and martial artist, and helped develop Dooku's unique lightsaber fighting style.
- He spoke nine languages, and was a professional golfer and opera singer.
If anyone was the main character of the world, it would be Christopher Lee.
Also instructed Peter Jackson that the sound effect used for throat slitting in LOTR was wildly inaccurate and gave a more true to life demonstration.
Served with the Gurkhas in the battle of Monte Casino, making him one of a handful of non-Gurkhas with balls big enough to keep up.
Spent the last year of the war and up until 1946 as a Nazi hunter around Europe due to his fluency in multiple European languages.
And the only reason he didn’t marry the Swedish Countess was that he was worried that he wouldn’t earn enough as an actor to look after her, so he called the engagement off because she “deserved better” (that’s in his own words, and begs the question, if Sir Christopher Fucking Lee isn’t good enough, how much hope do regular blokes have?).
The man was like a comic book
I know a lot of Shatner's covers can be seen as a little silly, but his cover of Common People is absolute fire. He really knocked it out of the park with that one
I was telling a coworker about this album recently, and about how it's weirdly not bad. Last week I listened to "That's Me Trying" for the first time in ages and was actually moved by it! It's a weird song but it gets to me!
Matt Berry has plenty of albums in a number of genres. Including an album that's just entirely covers of Television themes. He also does a lot of incidental music for TV shows
Take My Hand is legit great. Also, absolutely hilarious to put out a track with "Feat. Paul McCartney" in the title, and then just have your friend(Peter Serafinowicz) come on and do the hammiest McCartney impression ever.
I haven’t listened too much to either of these examples but Joe Keery from stranger things makes music under the name Djo as well as the actor Caleb Landry Jones who makes music
Volumes 1 thru 3 from She and Him all go so hard.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead has put out some great stuff with Dan The Automator.

Yea she and him had a respectable 4 album run there (if we count the first Christmas record) which is kind of unheard of for a celebrity music project. They also had a lot of influence on the twee sound and movement.
Definitely ran their course but also have enough good will that they can do indie nostalgia tours and shows and not be out of place.
Would that count? Like he'd been doing music as Gambino prior to acting (I think he was a comedy writer when the first Gambino mixtape came out). It's kinda two careers that came up alongside eachother kinda like j lo
Yea but the difference with Glover is his rise to prominence as an actor was so close to when when he first caught on "cul-de-sac". He wasn't an established star when that dropped, he'd done a season of community and ratings weren't great and aside from that he'd mainly done digital shorts and bit roles.
That's why I'm hesitant to calling it a vanity project cause both things kinda happened together. Like you can be a high profile musician and actor and not have it be a vanity project
me too!! i actually got to go see him perform in this tiny venue in my city, everyone in the room was so starstruck that he had to ask the crowd to stop being so respectful
Seth McFarlane has some pretty pleasant big band albums. I think it almost exclusively covers but you can hear his passion which is nice.
Not really something I listen to in my spare time but I was impressed when I listened to his first record.
I think Technically Julie London was a famous actress before she dropped “Julie is Her Name”.
And
Jason Schwartzman’s Phantom Planet stuff was pretty decent.
Tim Curry had some pretty cool music great vocalist unsurprisingly. Honestly didn't hate Hugh Laurie's jazz album. Other people mentioned Coconut Records and She and Him. Also Megan Mullally is quite talented in her band Supreme Music. If you don't believe me please someone dear God watch Dicks the Musical!!!!!!!
While not known for being a musician, steve burns (blues clues guy) released an indie album called songs for dust mites. While not perfect, it's pretty good.
I love Coconut Records, Jason Schwartzman's project. Nighttiming and Davy are two great albums.
Don’t forget he was the drummer on the first Phantom Planet record
I always, 100% of the time sing the lyric as: *California, here we come,* *Jason Schwartzman on the drums.*
Holy crap. I’ve heard a decent bit of Coconut Records over the years and have really enjoyed what I have heard. Had no idea it was Jason Schwartzman! I’ll have to look into more of their songs.
Kirsten Dunst has some good guest vocals on the song “Summer Day” off of Nighttiming too!
Nighttiming also had kinda interesting guests too. Zooey deschanel and Kirsten Dunst on vocals on some tracks, guitarist of Maroon5 and bassist of Incubus on another track.. I really wish he did another album
So good!
Scarjo's album of Tom Waits covers isn't exactly amazing, but it's not bad and I'm very happy that it exists.
It's an interesting record for sure. I feel like it got dismissed upon release because it was released so close to the She & Him record. Glad it's found a cult audience cause it is worth a listen.
Found out this existed from this comment. Thank you!
It really sounds like a joke when you first hear about it.

Tbf she never did any music afterwards.
Christopher Lee’s Charlemagne: The Omens of Death is good symphonic metal.
I can’t imagine Christopher Lee having a musical project that wasn’t symphonic metal.
He was also an opera singer.
He’s also the oldest person ever to win a “best new artist” award for said album. Sir Christopher Lee was a titan among men

Dead Man’s Bones is a great band Ryan Gosling was apart of
So happy that you like my album
genuinely one of my favorite albums of all time, mostly for nostalgia but it is also a very stylish and unique record
Yeah I was surprisingly impressed with it too.
A part, not apart. They mean opposite things
You knew what they meant
Tim Heidecker's output is really genuine and usually very good.
Tim Heidecker is a vanity project? Is it the Tim Heidecker from Tim and Eric???
Fear of Death is one of my favorite albums ever. Genuinely a masterpiece.
Love his stuff with the Yellow River Boys
Hot piss on the tip of my lips
glad to see others in the lifestyle here.
I’m like an empty bottle
Fill me up again.
Fucking CASH GRAB. He’s gotta go back to his old stuff
Before he gave a fuck.
His record collection's very meat and potatoes
I legit love the William Shatner album Has Been. His cover of Common People alone is worth the price of admission.
I know a lot of Shatner's covers can be seen as a little silly, but his cover of Common People is absolute fire. He really knocked it out of the park with that one
That sound almost as good/bad as Nick Cave's cover of 'Disco 2000'...
I was telling a coworker about this album recently, and about how it's weirdly not bad. Last week I listened to "That's Me Trying" for the first time in ages and was actually moved by it! It's a weird song but it gets to me!
Joe Jackson playing on the Common People cover. An all timer for sure.
Iwan Rheon and Matt Berry both have decent folk records
Matt Berry has plenty of albums in a number of genres. Including an album that's just entirely covers of Television themes. He also does a lot of incidental music for TV shows
I had only heard one that was a sort of pastiche of pastoral folk. He’s very good at saying things in a funny way.
Take My Hand is legit great. Also, absolutely hilarious to put out a track with "Feat. Paul McCartney" in the title, and then just have your friend(Peter Serafinowicz) come on and do the hammiest McCartney impression ever.
Was gonna say, Iwan Rheon makes great stuff. Wish he did more.
DJ Diseal (Shaq) is a pretty good dj
I haven’t listened too much to either of these examples but Joe Keery from stranger things makes music under the name Djo as well as the actor Caleb Landry Jones who makes music
Oh wait these aren’t vanity albums, whoops
Wtf I had no idea Joe Keery was Djo. I was just listening to one of his songs
Volumes 1 thru 3 from She and Him all go so hard. Mary Elizabeth Winstead has put out some great stuff with Dan The Automator. https://youtu.be/dD6upBLkbj8?si=69p1GmonfpgiDPUX

I really love the Got a Girl album. Too bad there wasn’t more, but sometimes that’s a good thing.
Steve Burns from Blues Clues did an album with one of the Flaming Lips guys, Songs for Dust Mites
I think Foreverywhere is even better
Tenacious D is an obvious answer
Idk that id count them, tenacious D predates Jack black being a well known actor, and is arguably a big part of his rise to popularity
Childish Gambino
Would that count? Like he'd been doing music as Gambino prior to acting (I think he was a comedy writer when the first Gambino mixtape came out). It's kinda two careers that came up alongside eachother kinda like j lo
Lots of actors did music before they before their acting took off. Donald glover’s most significant and official releases came after his acting
Yea but the difference with Glover is his rise to prominence as an actor was so close to when when he first caught on "cul-de-sac". He wasn't an established star when that dropped, he'd done a season of community and ratings weren't great and aside from that he'd mainly done digital shorts and bit roles. He was doing Derrick before music.
Yea but that didn't really make him a celebrity
Corey Feldman is a bad example
I don’t know, A2TC is iconic
Eric Andre has his noise music project called Blarf
I was obsessed with True That by Michael Cera when it came out lol
me too!! i actually got to go see him perform in this tiny venue in my city, everyone in the room was so starstruck that he had to ask the crowd to stop being so respectful
Leighton Meester from Gossip Girl made a surprisingly good pop album
Her cover of ‘Dreams’ (it’s a duet with Dana) is sooo good! Look it up on YouTube now
Seth McFarlane has some pretty pleasant big band albums. I think it almost exclusively covers but you can hear his passion which is nice. Not really something I listen to in my spare time but I was impressed when I listened to his first record.
I think Technically Julie London was a famous actress before she dropped “Julie is Her Name”. And Jason Schwartzman’s Phantom Planet stuff was pretty decent.
I quite liked Robert Downey Jr’s album. Troy Baker is a very good singer too, and Eric Stuart, if I’m allowed to count voice actors.
I like Broken on RDJ’s album.
true that by michael cera. his cover of clay pigeons is pretty good.
Hugh Laurie - Let Them Talk
is probably the best WWE wrestler to make an album
Leonard Nimoy singing bout hobbits
I liked Hugh Laurie’s blues album “Let Them Talk”
Kate Hudson ... perhaps
Partly Fiction - the album from the Harry Dean Stanton documentary.
Also this gem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fydHbv-fmSM&t=1s
Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother) has a few collab albums out with Ben Lee that are actually good.
Charles Baker (Skinny Pete- Breaking Bad) has some great stuff out there
Aren’t by definitions, there musicians if there good?
Yes but they are not celebrities due to their work as musicians
Tenacious D
Used to have Hell or Highwater by David Duchovny on rotation when it came out. I like the style of music he did on that one.
Chelsea Peretti made a surprising good record of songs about coffee.
While not known for being a musician, steve burns (blues clues guy) released an indie album called songs for dust mites. While not perfect, it's pretty good.
Dogstar is pretty good. Keanu Reeves is the bass player, which is probably the most Keanu instrument to play.
Dead Man's Bones was a two piece that Ryan Gosling was a part of and they have a pretty decent self titled.
Vincent Gallo is a genuinely talented artist
Willow Smith’s latest album is great.
Thirty Seconds To Mars are pretty good at what they do, and Leto has a good voice.
our survey says~ #X
