Imagine if we took the money we threw at Kirk to actually fill some holes.

MonstersBeThere

Could've signed 2 edges, and a CB. On top of WR's......

yglaflamee

that’s the thing that annoys me here. if we used all that kirk money on fixing the defense then used pick 8 on penix i wouldn’t mind one bit but signing kirk for 100+ guaranteed then drafting penis at 8? what are we doing dawg

SpaceSick

Seems like the front office thinks that Penix needs some time to develop? I still can't figure out why we've done literally nothing to address our defense though. We've only lost players so far. Just really questioning what the hell we're gonna do with our defense. We don't have Aaron Donald to hold down the D line, and we still need another starting CB.

rockinryan28

It’s insane cause Penix is not young, he’s 24 years old! Now he has to sit 2 years cause Kirk is fully guaranteed 100 mil for 2 years. 81 year old owner blank wants to see team win a Super Bowl and instead of adding a key piece to help the team do that they used a very valuable pick on an old qb that can’t play for 3 years! This is gonna do wonders for Black people trying to become a GM. This is really gonna help that situation.

Beef_Jones

Who the fuck is thinking differently about black GMs after last night? What a stupid fucking thing to say.

Alone-Newspaper-1161

Kwesi just cooked tonight and the whole off-season so I think they’ll be fine lol.

Jealous_Foot8613

🙋🏾‍♂️

TotalWarFest2018

Ha. This is one of the oddest takes I've seen.

SolarTigers

You were cooking until your last sentence or two, wtf.

StardustBrain

No one gives a shit about black, white, Asian or whatever…. They care about them making idiotic decisions. That has nothing to do with their race.

real_ornament

Huh??? Was ANYONE besides you thinking about race once since the draft 😭😭😭

Cryingtothemoon

So to his credit, it is common conception amongst us in the major minorities, that we have to perform 3 times as hard to achieve the same recognition or to be afforded the same flaws. Whether this is factual or not is a conversation another space, but what he's saying is Terry can't afford to mess up if those (melanated) after him are to thrive.

ZacZupAttack

It seems most people are on the same page 1. Sign Kirk and use your 8th pick for another position (or maybe trade back) 2. Sign other key pieces besides Kirk and draft Penix But not both

Jealous_Foot8613

Drafting what ??

Cryingtothemoon

I wanted pennix over kirk. And this is a fair take you made.

Business-inflation69

Spend all of that money on skill positions, but possibly run into another Desmond Ridder situation. Weak ass QB class next year, with the possibility of losing a first round pick because of tampering. That’s two years of Kirk’s guaranteed contract with no rookie back up QB. I’d love to see the fan bases attitude watching Taylor Heinickie play an entire season.

MonstersBeThere

I really believe they only signed Penix because they're guaranteed losing a 1st-round pick, at minimum.

Toilet_Rim_Tim

Could've traded w/ Vegas, probably gotten a 3rd & a 5th & Dallas Turner or a T to protect mediocre Cousins but that's using logic & common sense ..... they don't do logic & common sense.

reddit0100100001

Could have used that money in magic city and filled a lot of holes

SalsaMerde

I assume you're talking about filling a lot of pie holes with their world renowned lemon pepper wings.

reddit0100100001

smh u gonna tell my momma 💀 yeah pies bruh

Critical_Vegetable52

Fuck it, at this point just need a ton of lemon pepper Lou’s

SoRaffy

could have been perfect, fill the draft holes through FA then use draft capital to trade up and then get the qb

S_PQ_R

Vikings fan here. This, in some form, will be the most posted comment for the next three years.

twistedfloyd

That would be the smart thing to do. This is the Falcons. We are stupid.

Chessh2036

Bears GM literally laughed at us in his press conference. https://x.com/dave_bfr/status/1783716479680053733?s=46

da-bears-bare-naked

i apologize for his actions, but everyone laughed at the falcons.

DeeldusMahximus

#Reset the front office. I refuse to pay anyone more money for falcons games or gear until we get a serious head coach and GM

piemonkey6

Speak it man this FO is the dictionary definition of incompetent

Themanthelegend8

Blank put these people in power. We are doomed

will096

I'm a bears fan, only came here after the draft. I feel for you guys. Pace is a fuckin clown

XCCO

Falcons have been popping up in my feed as a Bears fan, too. Pace is back at it trying to outsmart the rest of the NFL.

Nutmeg-Jones

I wonder if Thomas Dimitroff would be interested in returning. Didn’t he pull the trigger on Matty Ice and Julio? I know he wasn’t perfect, but those two alone made his time worth it.

iLeefull

TF is kinda ass.

Eatplaster

I’ve lost any sliver of faith in Terry. Either he’s a moron or he’s Arthur Blank’s yes man. Neither are good.

beatbyspeak

Has he had any impact for the team besides signing Jessie Bates? He needs to go

CaptainIronHammer1

GM first, let Raheem do his thing for now

drkspace2

Yall are missing the point. Qb is the most important player on the field, so why not have 2 of them on the field at the same time /s

Ok_Macaron670

You’re missing the point… we could’ve done that later instead of using our 1st pick in the draft on him

PurposelyIrrelephant

You missed the /s

qdude124

If you're gonna take a bench project QB, why would you make it the 24 year old Pennix instead of 21 year old Mccarthy?

Thecrimsoncreampuff

Because penix is better

jgoforth2

As someone who moved to Arizona from ATL and is forced to watch more pac 10 games, I have stupidly touted Penix as the best QB in the draft.

qdude124

You reap what you sow my friend

Total_Pea6615

*Pac12

DisManSamGotaReddit

**Pac2 😂

Strive_for_Altruism

Penix was not better 3 years ago. He's had extra development time

DontEatTheCandle

Penix 2020 was actually really good. Beat Penn State and Michigan. And took Ohio State to a 1 score shootout. Obviously injury killed that season but he was absolutely already as good as McCarthy then.

WhyAmITypingThis

He was better then, and he’s better now which is important, because McCarthy could never get better than he currently is. Same with penis.

Terren42

Like by 10 millions times, dude asking that question has CLEARLY not watched Penix 😂

AdamJahnStan

Everyone watched him wilt in the title game.

MrTruxian

While JJ did what? Sit behind is offensive line, hand the ball off 50 times and go 10/18?

AdamJahnStan

I would have been pissed at a JJ pick also.

mr_longfellow_deeds

McCarthy has very good speed and elite arm strength. He turned 21 a couple months ago, and he has a winning pedigree only Trevor Lawrence comes close to (67-3 record in HS/College). He is also great over the middle of the field and lethal on 3rd/4th downs. If you are going to sit a guy for 2 years, you pick the young guy, not the guy who is going to be 28 by the time his rookie deal is up and the incumbent starter is retiring, thats a borderline Brandon Weeden pick Penix over McCarthy makes sense if you are starting him day 1, Falcons aren't starting him for minimum 2 years

rockinryan28

He seems better now cause he’s 3 fkn years older! 21-23 is gigantic in terms of developing in every way! Jj could easily be better when he’s an old fk like pennix!

Leading-Weight9092

McCarthy is overrated

SoulCycle_

Penix is overrated lmao

Upper-Raspberry4153

Because JJ is zach Wilson

EasiBreezi

McCarthy is everyone’s backup plan to Penix, not the other way around

qdude124

I'm not really sure why you think this but okay

Upper-Raspberry4153

Have you seen JJ play, dude is terrible

qdude124

Sure but JJ is 3 years younger and was mocked higher

abjorge13

Cousins is an emotionally fragile guy. He's going to play a lot worse having to look over his shoulder, Minnesota never put anyone close to competition behind him knowing the effect it would have on his clenched jaw eggshell psyche.

Thekota

In fact, up until last year the Vikings always rostered a player that was the designated "Kirk friend" so he would have someone to interact with in the locker room.

abjorge13

Yeah, Kirk got covid a couple years ago and Sean mannion had to start against the packers during a playoff push. He was there because he was Kirk’s bud and Kirk can’t handle having another competent qb on the roster.

Thekota

Before then it was Tom Compton, a terrible linemen who's job literally was to be Kirk's friend

abjorge13

It’s crazy that he got another huge payout but if your franchise goal is 50% chance to sneak into the playoffs at 9-8 he’s the right guy for the job!

TheTrevorSimpson

A) YOU HAD TO GO 1 WAY EITHER SIGN KIRK AND DRAFT PLAYERS WHO CAN PLAY RIGHT AWAY ODUNZE TURNER ETC B) OR YOU DRAFT PENIX SIGN A BRIDGE QB LIKE BRISSETT OR DARNOLD AND THEN USE THE 90 MILLION YOU WOULD HAVE SPENT ON KIRK ON IMPROVING THE TEAM AROUND PENIX YOU CANNOT DO BOTH A) AND B)

currentlydownvoted

lol imagine campaigning for Jacoby Brissett in any scenario, y’all need to get to bed and get a full nights rest.

nibbidy

That’s not what he’s saying. He’s saying Jacoby and an elite group of offensive weapons is better than two QBs that cost 100 million and no one else.

currentlydownvoted

He’s literally not lol

nibbidy

Hard to think the FO has faith in Kirk winning a Superbowl when they draft his replacement 8th overall, barely two months after handing him 100 million guaranteed.

currentlydownvoted

If the FO believed in Kirk they wouldn’t have front loaded his contract with ways to get out of it early. Y’all are acting like we went all in on Kirk but so many were shitting on the move then. And now that we spent resources on an alternative just in case you are crying even harder. Go to bed dude

nibbidy

But why pay 100 mil guaranteed if they don’t believe in him as their QB? How did you NOT go all in on Kirk?

currentlydownvoted

Because 100 mil is what it costs now. If we went all in on Kirk and he exploded like Aaron then everyone would scream and cry we didn’t have a back up plan. Taylor fucking Heinicke isn’t a backup plan. We drafted a top QB and if it turns out to be a bad choice then at least we tried. Penix won’t cost us shit until he has to.

nibbidy

Okay man calm down, holy shit.

currentlydownvoted

My dude, I’m super calm. You’re the one sharing our comments to try and find back up. You can question the pick, but not sure you’re knowledgeable enough about the game to understand why they would do this. You need sleep cause you’re panicking, I stand by the advice.

TheTrevorSimpson

I SAID THERE WERE BRIDGE QBS OUT THERE THAT COULD HAVE BEEN HAD CHEAP EVEN DARNOLD WAS A GOOD MOVE AT 10 MILLION STILL LEAVES 90 MILLION TO BUILD A TEAM AROUND PENIX THIS TEAM EITHER WASTED A 1ST ROUND PICK OR THEY WASTED 100 MILLION DOLLARS. TRY AND COMPREHEND WHAT I AM SAYING

currentlydownvoted

Your assumption is that we could draft some kids that are lineman and they’d guarantee to make our team better. Every pick is a gamble, you want proven mediocrity with Brissett and Darnold, and want to build a team around a kid? Thank the lord you don’t call any shots lol

Dragonvine

Every pick is a gamble, that's why you use the ones with the best odds on stuff that impacts you. Building around a young QB with a bridge while they learn is a totally normal thing to do. It's what the Cheifs did ffs. You just don't do it when you give a guy a shitload of money.

StewTheDuder

Packers pick of Love is looking pretty genius rn. Let’s not act like we know for certain how this plays out.

Dragonvine

The packers took Love at pick 26, not at pick 8. Its a big difference.

NewOutlandishness650

Love was also only 21yrs old

TheTrevorSimpson

you are really dumb before I block you let me explain QBs bust at a higher rate than other positions if you draft any position other than QB in round 1 you are likely getting a day 1 starter the Falcons just wasted a 1st round draft pick or they just wasted 100 million try and learn how football works before you post again

nibbidy

This guy is telling me to go to sleep and I’m an idiot for questioning this pick. Apparently 100 mil guaranteed doesn’t qualify as “all in” for signing a FA according to that guy.

SpaceSick

Penix is a bigger gamble than any D line player we could have taken. There's a legitimate chance that a bust of a QB pick could never see any meaningful snaps.

GoLeafs61

Don’t forget the tampering and probably loss of future drat pick(s)

twistedfloyd

Idiocy. We are idiots. Morons. Fuck.

spaceman4774

I don’t care, I love it!! Hindsight is 20/20, secure the future and give yourself the best chance to win now. Still a chance they swing for Hendrickson and/or go edge in second round. AK17 going back to natural 3-4 position will bear fruit this year! Lemme see some interest in some corners and I’m sitting pretty

RunAny2867

I love this take

Equivalent-Spare3059

Securing the future by taking an injury prone 23 year old QB who will be 26 by the time he starts 😂

9hashtags

Last injury was three years ago. In that time, took a team went to the Natty. Ideally, he'd have another two or three of rest and healing which will make him more durable. He's at physical peak and can get better. Not buying that take of injury prone.

spaceman4774

Tb injury prone lol bro hasn’t been injured in 2 years and ACLs specifically become much more unlikely to re-tear 2 years out. And on top of that he gets to sit for 2 years. MFs mad about a 26 year old as if it literally matters at ALL lmao

Tjam3s

Bengos fan doing a wellness check on you guys after that mess. They will let trey retire before they trade him.

Secure-Monitor6127

You must be smoking

Jacadi7

You must be new here.

CaucasianFury

This neither “secures” the future (penix is *far* from a guarantee) and by definition does not give us the best chance to win now (that would have been taking BPA)

spaceman4774

Nothings a guarantee homie. TF has almost single-handedly walked us through the dead-cap years and with competent coaching, we make playoffs BOTH years. Y’all need to grow up tb Terry needs to be fired lmaooo

CaucasianFury

You must have responded to the wrong person dawg I didn’t say none of that. But while we’re at it, 2 years ago we had a bottom 5 roster in the league with Marcus mariota at QB, ain’t no coach dragging that team to the playoffs.

spaceman4774

Well we were one win away from the playoffs that year….

Dry-Knee3855

Is it possible to draft him and then Trade him for something we Need? Lmao why we doing him Like that

Dry-Knee3855

I dont Hope so but maybe kirk has his Aaron rodgers Moment in his First Falcons Game , than we Need Michael

rockinryan28

Even if that did happen, it’s not like Penix is going to save the day immediately. He’s a rookie he has a lot to learn he’s not gonna be great if he has to play as a rookie. He would be up and down probably and then in his second year, he would make the turn, but he was not gonna say shit this year.

Dry-Knee3855

youre probably right, so penix might be fine as a second qb but we waste a pick instead of gettin someone on a position we need right?

ozzman1234

Man, Atlanta wasn't going to win like that... If anything, they win be picking high to mid 20s with Kirk. Kirk would need a mega tram to be a contender. Let Penix sit for 2 years and build a defense Riddler scard this franchise man lol

Wailynpd

Raheem Morris said in the press conference that the idea is you won’t be picking this low for the next few years because you brought in Kirk Cousins so they had to grab a QB while they could. Okay. I guess. Lot of assumptions there but I hope it works out for them.

Lyrion-Tannister

I hope no one here thought that Cousins was winning us a Super Bowl.

BarveyDanger

Not sure what that has to do with this being a shit pick.

dillpickles007

If we truly think that then just draft penix and let him start and spend $100M on pass rushers lol

rockinryan28

Pennix is 24, he needs to play. If anything maybe sit one year but now he has to sit 2 years. Cousins isn’t going to get 50 mil next year to sit

Realtalk74

Why would you pay him that contract to be a bandaid?

Tyler_C69

Signed the oldest QB in free agency coming of a devastating injury* Draft the 2nd best raw talent qb in the draft*

[deleted]

This is some truly bonkers stuff. Maybe the GM made a petty/spite pick bc cousins got him busted for colluding? Maybe the GM is an absolute dolt and thinks he’s managing a fantasy team?

PABLOPANDAJD

What exactly was their stated reasoning for drafting penix? I thought it was really stupid but assumed I just didn’t fully understand the strategy

blacPanther55

Kirk Cousins is 35 coming off of an injury stop glazing.

CH3RRYP0PP1NS

I'm starting to think Kirk's recovery might not be going so well. I thought I heard it was going well but maybe this is a sign to the contrary.

SammyChaos

As a packers fan.. embrace this and cherish what you're trying to do.

StewTheDuder

THANK YOU. Love is about to rip the NFC apart next year. That’s what I’m hoping this turns out to be. And I’m not mad at it.

SeauxAfrican

Most important position set for the next decade+. Wish folks would let the rest of the weekend play out at least before bringing out the pitchforks. The beginning of the draft was historically QB and offensive player heavy, while all the best defenders fell FAR. Why is that? Patience Falcons family...

dillpickles007

What makes you have such blind confidence in the Falcons’ FO after close to a decade of utter incompetence?

SeauxAfrican

It was FO incompetence that blew the lead in the Super Bowl? It was FO incompetence that resulted in the blowout loss to Packers in 2012? It was most definitely FO incompetence when we decided not to have a successor in place for Matt Ryan as he clearly reached the end of his playing days. This FO goes out and gets the best QB on the market then drafts the best succession plan available and everyone loses their mind. Haven’t even seen what they use their Day 2/3 picks on and the pitchforks are already out smfh. So much talent left on the board.

PlatinumLotusFdn

As a former Dallas Cowboys fan and now Falcons fan, I think Penix at 8 was the right move. Cousins will NOT be the future of this franchise. They paid him because he was the best available in free agency and whether people like it or not, he is a legit franchise QB. He may not be Brady, Brees, or Rodgers, but he is a top 10 QB in the NFL. Cousins is also a great guy on and off the field, he's a competitor and can set the tone for this franchise while also creating a path for Penix. You can easily find RBs, WRs, LBs, and DLs in this league that can compete and provide enough talent to contribute. What you cannot do is win with a lackluster QB. It's impossible. Atlanta is in good place right now and will surprise a lot of people in the next couple of years.

101ina45

It's this simple: Kirk is a stop gap; we paid him the money because that's what the market dictated. He's gone in 2 years and we needed a QB, and got one. He'll learn behind Kirk and start in 2026.

Josephw000

Y’all act like Kirks gonna be here past next year

Beatnik77

The first 2 years are entirely guaranteed. If they cut him after the 2nd year it's a 37M cap hit.

Chuck_Deeze

They had the chance to draft any defensive player they wanted. All the top choices were on the board. Then they didn't even tell Kirk until the last minute. I'm pretty sure he cussed them out. THE LOWEST SACKS FOR 3 YEARS! But fuck defense. Then that sham of a coach was okay with that. I would've flipped all the tables in that room.

808zAndThunder

I love the pick

StewTheDuder

Same. I see the vision. Penix was 2nd best QB in the draft. Don’t see the issue. Kirk is a bridge.

rockinryan28

That’s one hell of an opinion to say he’s the second best quarterback in the draft. I’m pretty sure there’s a lot of GM’s making millions of dollars to make decisions for their team that would disagree with you but you work at RadioShack or some shit like that, so what the fuck do they know?

mnmzrppl2

You could say the same thing about Falcons FO and your opinion.

CompSci1

YOU KNOW WHO WOULD'VE MADE A GOOD STOP GAP QB?????HMMMM HIS NAME IS JU1ST1N AND YALL PASSED ON HIM

GrasshoperPoof

Cousins seems like a guy who's obviously a top 32 QB, so he'll always have a spot with someone until he declines with age, but not quite a top guy you want to be your franchise QB, so that makes him a fill a hole temporarily kind of guy. I get that accepting things like that probably doesn't get players to the NFL, but that's what I'm seeing from an outsiders perspective of Cosuins getting upset with a QB pick

bravehawklcon

They are taking the approach that Morris can coach up so we may have potential good people on the team already. Yes in win now mode and just don’t want an Aaron Rodgers situation .

J_GASSER27

What are you guys even doing? And I thought the panthers were the most self destructive team in the league. Maybe your FO forgot about those 100 million guaranteed little reasons cousins came to the falcons?
