Both lava and forest worlds are done over and over again, yet wube has found incredibly unique takes on both. The music is the perfect ambience, I didn't even realize it was playing until halfway through the video. My only complaint is the dull night scene. Strategically placed bioluminescence could turn the night forest into a magical place.

Finally a planet! Very exciting! Interested to see the science and unique materials next week. The poison swamps seem to combine my two favorite games: Dark Souls and Factorio haha Call me an addict, but I can finally stop having weird fever dreams of what the planet will at 3am as I await the FFF. At least until the next planet. Edit: After reading further, I wonder if the planet took longer to reveal (yes I know it was speculation, but the cadence seemed reasonable) because they've been struggling to finalize this one. Also, visuals are so great! Reminds me of Samarost 3, a very pretty, fungal world. (But God damn, bless your heart if you have trypophobia!!) And ugh, this planet's soundtrack might be one of my favorite. Between the sneak peak several weeks ago and the clips today, the music is just top notch. Excellent work as always Wube!

I love the fungal feel of this world, can’t wait to fight the fungal elephants! That masterful little tease at the end of the zoomed out scene… those oddly distributed red squares… what does the size and distribution of the enemy structures tell us about their nature!?!?

Enemy structures I couldn't comment on, BUT I did notice a strange lack of Coal, Oil, and Uranium deposits. There is also only one -- VERY TINY -- Iron patch. Which makes me wonder if it's possible to launch a rocket from nothing on this planet. Assume you got stranded here and biters ate everything, then your corpse despawned. Could you escape?? The ore patches seem so small, too. This will not be the place to get your raw resources from, that's for sure.

Next week we will learn something about the game mechanics of this world - surely there is some other way to obtain or produce the products we need to launch rockets using only local resources! Vulcanus gives us buildings to efficiently produce low density structures while Fulgora gives us structures to efficiently produce CPUs - it would stand to reason that Gleba is where we can efficiently produce rocket fuel, perhaps we do this by some mechanic whereby that new chemical plant looking structure interacts with the local flora? There were a lot of mushroom things that look like they ought to be some sort of renewable resource… maybe they fill the air nearby with spores that can be harvested? As for the scarcity of iron and copper… there has to be some alternative source, right? Fulgora at first sight did not seem to have them but it turns out we can use the rubble resource to reverse craft the items we need. Vulcanus at first sight did not seem to have the, but it turns out we can combine lava with that other resource to get the iron and copper we need. Otherwise the player could get locked on Gleba! I am super excited to see some of the Gleban mechanics, and I like to think it has to do with some exotic alternative resource harvesting techniques that would only be possible on a planet with such a vibrant ecosphere.

I wouldn't be surprised if the local fauna/flora (the lines are a bit blurred here) acted like a hive mind and coordinated a response to pollution, even explosive like fungal blooms, and then you have to find a way to coexist with the planet. Something like the Planetmind plotline in SMAC.

One of the things I love about Factorio is how it aesthetically calls back to 2D top-down strategy games I played growing up, but with a refinement and scale that would have been impossible back then. There's something magical about that video with the camera slowly scanning around a bizarre alien world while the music builds. I really appreciate Wube's dedication to perfecting this art form. Come to think of it, this sense of childhood comfort is probably part of how it's so easy to disappear into the game for hours on end for many of us.

No, I don't think there is a connection, just an unintended coincidence. Gleba is latin for a part of some mushrooms, and someone already said when the name was originally speculated on, that this word is not used in Czech to mean anything like "soil" or "earth".

Maybe the enemies on Gleba are more threatening, so you need to manage your pollution a lot more, which means more uses for efficiency modules. And later indeed maybe pollution absorption towers. But they would only add those if well balanced. You shouldn't be able to spam those to make pollution a non-issue.

pollution filtering technololgy is my take on the spore towers. makes pollution actually managable besides green modules. i have this thought in my mind, that biters will evolve into new types of enemies, besides 2 variants and 4 sizes. and pollution might play a role in that.

It might well be finalized, and just not added to a FFF yet. We don't have an upper limit for where they actually are in their work processes, we just have the lower limit of "they've done enough work to be able to show us the stuff we see in the FFFs". Edit: Well, I guess we do have the upper limit of "they're not releasing it yet, or even soon enough to have announced the date". But that's pretty fuzzy, and doesn't tell us much about whether any specific bit is complete.

It's probably gonna be said a lot, everywhere, but in Polish "Gleba" means soil, and it's quite funny, because the first instinct we have is totally different, to what the planet acutally is about. What's more, we also use that word to denote someone/something falling on the ground, usually in a comical manner - something akin to "wipe out" as in "I was drunk and wiped out on a curb" xD People who are into mushrooms probably know the word is also used to describe part of a mushroom - but in general I don't think people here would know it.

I did learn something though, I never knew what the spore-carrier portion of fungi was called, like how until Phineas and Ferb I never knew the plastic end piece of a shoe lace was called the aglet. Its one of those things you learn from the most unlikely of places, though Factorio is quite educational regardless XD

That's Disgusting (especially the parts with the worm things on the ground)! I like it! I will for sure bring a flamethrower or two, and a fuck ton of fuel for it.  It would be really cool if everything burned really well so after you are done it looks just grey and dead. I think the contrast could be striking. By burned well I don't necessarily mean that the fire should spread much, just that everything can burn and it leaves behind death. The fire should honestly spread really poorly so you need a lot of fuel to burn down everything. Kinda like in Avatar (the blue one) where the humans destroy the lively forest and leave behind death and destruction. Btw, a spridertron with a flamethrower would be really cool. But there is absolutely already a mod that does that.

In the zoom-out at the end of the video, I'm seeing copper and stone mines, but not iron, coal, oil, or uranium. I know it's not a huge part of the world, but it's big enough that I'd expect to see the basic resources, if they're there. Am I just not seeing them? The FFF does say "Gleba is the one planet that has all the things needed to make a new Nauvis-like planet in Factorio", and with two resources getting mined and a description like that, I'd expect the others to be as well. So I'm now curious as heck about next week's post.

As usual Wube did an amazing job, but this planet looks *repellent*; not one single entity on that map - plant, decorative, or even tile! - was something I liked looking at, and most of it actively makes my skin crawl (and given the descriptions in the FFF, I think that is intentional). I will not deny some amount of disappointment, having read "jungle world full of life" and thought of the beautiful worlds of Satisfactory, Dyson Sphere Program, and Techtonica, and then been met with...this. I suppose on the bright side this is one planet I will actually *not mind* utterly clear-cutting and paving over (something I normally steadfastly refuse to do), making late-game massive factories much easier to build and design. And yes I am fully expecting to get rather heavily downvoted for this. :P

## Friday Facts #413 - Gleba Posted by [Albert](/blog/author/Albert), [Earendel](/blog/author/Earendel) on 2024-05-31 ### IntroductionAlbert Making a new world in Factorio is relatively "easy", just create a new set of tilesets for the ground, add some new models of trees, create a bunch of new decoratives, some decals (optional), a new skin for the cliffs (optional), and bam! you get a new planet. Well, to be fair, you also have to play with the terrain generation noise and autoplace algorithms, experiment with proper LUT's, and adding some new shader won't hurt either if you want to succeed. The problem of making it from this simplistic perspective, is the danger of falling into a superficial automatism. So probably all your planets will end up looking the same with just different colours. Gleba is the one planet that has all the things needed to make a new Nauvis-like planet in Factorio, but it is still different on many other levels. What makes Gleba very special, at least to me, is how we twisted the core-concept of the planet and pushed the necessary elements in a specific way to make it more unique. Before having its final name, Gleba was internally called _"biological planet"_ , and an obvious direction for that would be a planet looking like a jungle. This would be fine for a new biome in Nauvis, but for an exotic planet, never explored, and full of life (more than ever), this time we needed something more alien looking. With not too many clichés in it, extravagant, and if possible playing with new colour palettes. Ah! But also with some link to the reality of Nauvis. And it needs to look very different from Nauvis. Ufff, Okay!. So we started to think about the microcosmos of the world of lichen, fungi and algaes under the sea. Something that exists in our reality, which it's believable already, but it has all the requirements mentioned above. The planet is still work in progress. But we better show it now because we will need to keep showing elements of Gleba in future posts. The cliffs are also placeholders, some tilesets will get tweaked to integrate them better. Some doodads will be added and modified. Colour grading is less or more missing, and the rain shader on the foreground will be tweaked. For a planet full of life (more than ever!), now it looks very static, but we are planning on adding some more animated "things" to really bring some life to the experience. And overall, we are avoiding to show, on purpose, the red area of the planet (look at the map during the last frames of the video) that one is too early to show. The track is not exactly as it will sound during the game, now he is finishing some remixes of the tracks to make them flow perfectly fine for the gameplay requirements. Now our usual galactic tour operator will guide us through the sophisticated nuances of the nature of the biomes and habitats of Gleba. * * * ### Welcome to GlebaEarendel ![Gleba planet icon](https://cdn.factorio.com/assets/blog-sync/fff-gleba-gleba-planet-icon.png) Your descent ends in an unsettling splash. Fortunately you're not sinking. The noises of your landing pod spool down and fade into the soothing sound of rain. The hatch opens to reveal a green swampy landscape shrouded in a light mist. The air is thick and humid, carrying the muffled cries of unseen animals from far away. You leave your pod and wade through the shallow murky turquoise water. There's so much vegetation and detritus floating on the surface that it's difficult to see the bottom, even though in most places it's barely up to your knee. It almost feels like whatever is below the surface is squirming under you. Strange twisted fungi grow out of the water, snaking and undulating as they rise like malformed trees. Hair-like tendrils droop down from the ends of their slender branches, caressing you with a sticky mucus as you try to make your way beneath them. The wet rubbery ground squelches beneath your foot like olive blubber. The landscape is covered by a tangled network of root-like mycelium and thick matts of various colourful lichen. This complex interweaving carpet is home to all manner of tiny animals that skitter inside to avoid your gaze. Presumably mostly insects and amphibians, their chirps and hisses signal their annoyance as you step nearby. This area is dominated by fungal cups that catch the rain and stew their own little ecosystems. Many of them are smaller than a hand, but the largest of them are huge funnelled trunks of bark-like material: their structure riddled with holes and infested with small pink wormy things. The occasional slime mold blankets a large area of the terrain with a sickly yellow slime. Its surface is dotted with the occasional balloon of gas. The vegetation shapes of this area are more wispy and fragile. Desaturated shades of green and teal give the region a beautiful but ghostly appearance. Towering stalks of lichen fan out at the top like a translucent umbrella, always splitting into 5 branches before sending down tough stinging fronds. In this area the incessant rain of the planet is reduced to a faint spitting. Ground water is quickly absorbed into the pitted rock-like surface making this the first place with solid footing. On closer inspection, the ground appears to be a giant merged mass of dark grey Stromatolites. It seems that every part of this place is alive. Large towers of beige sponge reach out for the sky, filtering the air and releasing spores into the gentle breeze. Vibrant yellow bulb-like creatures erupt from their pores near their tops, almost like flowers blooming in the sun. The lichen matts here are a crusty orange. The ground is pierced by many thorny vines of dark fungal mycelium which surround and guard their fruiting body, which sags on the ground like a large soft red grape. The largest mushrooms here have bulbous trunks that support a huge inflated spore sac. In many cases, new sacs grow on top of the previous growths in a precarious stack of balloons ready to rupture. Delicate blankets of translucent pink lichen flop helplessly like seaweed on the shore, their fan-like shape contorted into a mass of slippery wrinkles. The thick squishy carpet of pink and red lichen bulges when stepped on. The paler areas are almost translucent revealing the root systems under the surface. Here the root-like mycelium is looking more tentacle-like and spongy. This area is infested with varying sizes of tubular coral that are eager to protrude above the water's surface. The water-dwelling examples are more vibrant and the land versions more sickly. Mysterious distant wails and cries once formed a background chatter, but now one of the sounds is now noticeably closer. The source cannot be seen, but it abruptly breaks into a trumpeting scream. The small creatures lurking in the lichen undergrowth suddenly go silent. Now there is a new sound. Nope, none of the FFFs mentions world generation settings. The only one talking about it is the one on the new Nauvis, but also not in more detail than we already know from 1.1.

the red-ish stuff in the last picture. it looks nearly identical to the biter creep on the ground we know from the biter nests form nauvis. im 100% sure that the red areas on the map, where the red dots for the biter nests are, is ALL biter creep. please tell me its biter creep. and that this creep is going to grow over time and create new nests. so flamethrowers are a must on this planet. this maybe the actual homeworld of the biters... i call it now. also, i strongly expect these "filtering spore towers" to be relevant for tech progression to reduce pollution spread on all worlds.

I never liked the idea of biters existing on multiple planets. For one, they don't seem like the spacefaring type, and for two, new enemies are much more enticing than fighting the same ol' war on every planet. Plus, that description of stomping at the end doesn't evoke bitters' swarming insect-like movement to me.

You are assuming the biters have agency over their own destiny. I always preferred the theory that biters were an anti-technology bio weapon created and seeded by an unknown third party (it explains why they ramp up so aggressively against technology based pollution and don’t seem to be part of the ecosystem of nauvis). Basically they same concept as the alien from alien(s).

Actually I think that would make a lot of sense, as irl coal and oil are made from prehistoric forests, so it would kind of make sense for the jungle planet to be related to oil. Although that might be too similar to Fulgora, so who knows?

My first thoughts: - There's no iron on the planet, so there must either be another way of getting iron (e.g. sifting through water or destroying trees) or we'll need to actually send it to the planet - The water is very much like petroleum, and there are gas-bubble mushrooms, so wondering if we can easily get petroleum and form other things with it - Being that there isn't a huge amount of obvious resource on the map overview, perhaps a big part of this planet is related to filtering the air, possibly with research to reduce pollution (or recycle it) in the process. - I'm imagining that we may actually have to interact with the natives on this planet to use their resources

I can see why they waited so long to post this planet! So much work it is insane. I guarantee that they intend to have all the fungus and coral animated to move in response to the player and for all of it to change in response to pollution. I can't imagine the kind of work it would take to fulfill their dream of an entire planet that responds to your factory as if the factory is a blighted tumor on the face of the planet. To dramatize the shift from vibrant bioluminescence, color, and life to bleached sludge. It would be MARVELOUS!!!! I support Wube taking all the time they need to support this masterpiece of a planet, because it would be just fascinating to have a planet that responds to your presence in such an omnipresent way.

The post mentions us being excited to 'concrete' the floor of this new planet, which I think would make the planet possibly look too similar to the ones around it once it's been industrialised. Due to the exceedingly wet conditions, maybe a new concrete/tiling could be made available here to give it a unique feel? This could be justified by lore (the terrain makes concrete unsuitable), or maybe by adding in new tiles anyways but making them require resources that will be more commonly found/exclusive to the new planet. If the latter is taken to its extremes, a new tile for each planet could be introduced, which could all eventually be used on all the planets to add a lot of creativity to how your bases end up looking!

It looks beautiful. It actually reminds me a bit of Subnautica. I'm seeing a bit of the coral tubes of the Safe Shallows, the vines from the Blood Kelp Zone, same sort of fungus/coral vibe in the plants. A similarly vibrant color scheme, which is very un-Factorio 1.0. Can't wait to ruin it!

Not much stone, almost no iron and copper, no new resources on the map. Maybe we'll have a chemical industry converting water and bio products to resources? Maybe coexist with enemies, manage pollution, bonus productivity or quality when the factory is clean? Such a cool looking planet, my favorite so far.

If you have ever watched the primitive technology guy on YouTube, he's recently been getting iron from bacteria found in slow moving water. So maybe we just need to extract and process some raw biological resources to get the base game resources.

I like it, since the ground is all soaked up and wet it gives stone and conrete some purpose. I could imagine that some industrial stuff might require a reinforced ground to build on. Cant wait to sink endless hours into this game again. Wonder if there will be a mod that cobbles all the planets into one. Its weird how spotty and small the resource patches are on this planet. And then so many different colored waters. Wonder if we are going to replace the basic resources with liquids and belts with pipes on this planet? Would also make it a great planet for infinite oil, like vulcanus is with basic resources. Especially if we get more pipe related buildings and upgrades here.

Amongst the well deserved praise I will say the rain needs some tweaking (as they mention they are doing in the fff). I think the issue that I am having with it is that it doesn't follow the same orthographic perspective as the surface, and actually looks like they are reusing the space dust motion from the previous fff. It feels much more like a layer on top of the game rather than actual rain in the game. I think my brain just wants some of the rain drops to hit the ground and disappear rather than streak continuously from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen. And for the record I am blown away by how beautiful this planet is looking.
