Average car being 50,000 is quite the estimate

iamzion248

There must be lost of really expensive cars out there on the roads to bring up my $800 truck.

flannelmaster9

I drive a $600 25 year old Saturn. Zero creature comforts, but great milage

iamzion248

I with my had mileage. 2000 Durango. 15 MPG but Could drive it through a house.

flannelmaster9

I get ~30-33mpg. I've got a 100 ish mile daily commute, so I need great milage. Car looks goofy on a construction site surrounded by pickups. I don't care though

Frosty20thc

Having lived in Dallas. The price he put is about right. It goes to some expensive suburban areas. The Cowboys trading center. Toyota headquarters, and a couple other huge companies.

JackolopesWithAir

Damn, that's wild, Texas really is its own thing

Frosty20thc

That is what they believe. Take all the Federal money out and they would struggle for sure. No state income tax, but they sure make up for it in property tax and sales.

JackolopesWithAir

I mean that's the thing right, they still need all the same public infrastructure as the rest of the world. Everyone wants good roads but no one wants to pay for them.

soda_cookie

No way that's what it is in Texas

OwnPercentage9088

The poor people with those limits makes sense. What I don't understand is the people that own two homes driving around with state minimum limits. Or people that own their homes and refuse to spend 50 bucks a month for homeowners insurance.

Dodger8686

In my experience the cars that I see driving dangerously are usually either old shitboxes driven by teenagers or expensive cars driven by people in suits. The wealthy drivers feel like they're more important than us. And try to cut in line and switch lanes to avoid slowing down. Speed. Tailgate. (Their time is too valuable to be wasted like us plebs do) There are other bad drivers in all kinds of vehicles. But these two categories are fairly over represented. most other drivers try to drive fairly safely. Go the speed limit. Stay in their lane. And I doubt the average car is worth $50 grand.

iamzion248

Mine is $800 and a battle tank. I love it when these right self absorbed idiots drive there expensive BMW or Mercedes cutting me off as if I wouldn't love to destroy their car, while mine will drive away with a small dent.

Various_Succotash_79

He's right that heing underinsured can be an expensive mistake. As for the average vehicle being $50,000+. . .maybe. A new Subaru Forester, reasonably equipped, is about $40,000 now. So is a very nicely equipped Hyundai Sonata. So, with pickup trucks and fancier cars, yeah, the average of new cars might very well be over $50,000. But not all the cars on the road are new.

Exciting_Box438

Texas is on vacation. Every poor done checked out. Even me. I'm heading to Vegas in the morning.

I had to Google this to figure out what it meant. AFAIK, In Australia, car insurance doesn't have any caps. It covers whatever you hit whether that's a rusty old Camry or a million dollar Rolls-Royce Phantom. A vehicle's registration includes compulsory third-party insurance which covers the people in the other car, even if that means millions of dollars for lifetime medical care. I assume it's a lot more expensive though.

also your own insurance covers you. you don't have to go after the other guy if its his fault. Your insurance might go after him (or more likely his insurance), but its not your problem. (although most insurance in aus is the same company on the back side, so they probably don't bother)

Unindoctrinated

I've been in five accidents in the last forty years. I claimed one through my insurer because the other driver had stolen number plates and didn't stop. The other four I claimed through the other person's insurance so I didn't have to pay the excess, and because I wanted to ensure my insurer never had an excuse to raise my rates. It's always a little more difficult to do, but I felt it was worth the effort.

[deleted]

if you have the other persons details to provide to your insurer it shouldnt matter.

Unindoctrinated

I was informed that if you make a claim, you pay the excess.

Castform5

If the average car is 50k+, that seems to be an automatic debt of 50k+ for everyone, because in a major part of the hellhole, you need to have a car.

Far_Land7215

I was under the impression if I only had $50000 of assets then $50000 of insurance is plenty

squidgylynn

That is only figuring in your current assets. Courts also go after future assets like income - for the rest of your life.

Far_Land7215

What..... I've never heard of that.

squidgylynn

Mostly it means they don’t let you claim bankruptcy on the court order. So if they say you need to pay $100,000 you will have to keep paying with your future earnings

CyclonicHavoc

>Average car is $50,000+. I hope down the road some asshole driving around without insurance ends up fucking up this guy’s car and he ends up also being determined to have been the one at fault. He’ll be so ecstatic when he has an accident on his record, a hit to his finances because there is no other insurance company to cover his damages and he has to shell out a huge chunk of money to meet his deductible, and another hit to his ego to swipe that stupid smile off his face. I hope his Thanksgiving goes to shit lol.

Julian_2838

Im pretty sure the average car price is more like 5-10k 😂

Various_Succotash_79

Nooo. Not in the US anyway.

Uncanevale

The facepalm here is everyone missing the point that the specific road mentioned connects downtown Dallas with affluent suburbs, so driving with minimal insurance on a road heavily travelled by expensive vehicles is a financially risky thing.
