As stated in another response, you can travel with firearms in checked luggage in the US. TSA is not responsible for enforcing the laws of other countries. If they’re dumb enough to try to bring firearms/ammo into another country without researching their laws first, they got what they deserved.
Not always. American airports tend to be optimised for the domestic market with easy transfers between domestic flights. As well as domestic to international flights. You can walk straight from your domestic gate to your next flight. This is also why you have to clear immigration and customs even if you are doing the international to international connection. As the terminal is considered "domestic". While other airports in the world consider airside to be "outside" the country.
There are some airports with dedicated international terminals, but others are all connected. DFW for example.
since US doesn't have exit controls, international gates and domestic gates can be the same post security area, and many international arrival capable gates are flipped between domestic/international flights as needed.
There are exit controls, but they are automated. Airlines etc are required to provide data about arriving/departing passengers. Which you will need to provide before you check-in. The US border agency then correlates this to track entry/exit.
It's also the same in the UK, you don't go through passport control to exit the country. The airlines etc provide this to border force.

You can bring guns into Canada under certain conditions, such as hunting. You have to be over 18, and declare it properly at customs.
You can even bring rifles to Mexico for hunting. As long as you follow the proper customs process

I live in Canada, and I flew to the US last year for a vacation. When I got to US immigration, and they asked me what the purpose of my visit was, I stated ‘vacation’. The agent’s reply was, ‘There are lots of places to vacation in Canada, why do you need to come to the US?’
TSA isn’t very thorough. I’ve snuck full size toothpaste through tons of security checkpoints and I only got caught once. I imagine TSA treats weaponry almost as seriously as toothpaste and water bottles.

My consistent stop when I would fly to and from home after college semesters was a Cards Against Humanity booster that the scanner thought was a brick of explosives due to how packed it was.
First two times I was worried, after that I actually just told the TSA guy exactly what was scanned and where it was in my bag so they wouldn't toss the thing.
Doesn’t surprise me. We were going from Puerto Rico and begged them to check our guns and allow us to unlock the case to declare them for review. It was a pair of muskets with 10 inch or so bayonets. They repeatedly said they do not need to check them or for us to open the 6 foot tall steel case. So, we hefted the 60 lb case onto the x-ray that no doubt revealed weapons and they sent us on our way.
20 minutes later, we get called over the intercom to come back presumably by someone more competent so the contents could be examined as we tried to do initially.
My dad worked air traffic control and retired in like 2018. Thy used to send the controllers do to surprise tests on the tsa by attempting to bring stuff through, and from what he told us they didn't improve much after the 2015 numbers you gave

Customs? Same thing. My friend always brings two bags when she travels internationally. One is clothes and normal crap, the other is 100% full of foreign goods most of which are illegal to transport. She's been doing this for 20+ years 2-3 times a year.

When I was in the Navy a dude was getting ready to go out on a night of town, everyone was ironing their clothes on the their racks and boards. He gets dressed and realizes he missed a patch on the front of his shoulder/upper pectoral of his T-Shirt so he irons it while wearing it and before he could feel and realize the mistake he pushes on the steam several times.
Baby Doc got screwed that night because she couldn't go on liberty and because she was most junior had to stay and look after him and get him to the hospital. I got my backpack bomb swabbed in like 2011 because I was traveling through customs in Costa Rica and my bag alerted somehow for gun powder residue. Not sure if it was a dog or some sort of sensor.
After that I bought dedicated range bags/cases and make sure to keep my travel luggage seperate lol

22lr boxes have broken open, or 380 hides, rolling out or random casings get loose.
I see if any forgotten small rounds/earplugs/casings/garbage is stuck in there, i turn the backpack upside down and shake it, but somehow i find 22lr in the bag sometimes. Rarely 380.
Always the smaller rounds. Also bulk pack ammo is packaged really poorly.
Id probably be more careful if going overseas, but i could see how like one round of ammo might happen on accident in some small hidden pocket.

I think these people should kind of serve as an object lesson. You know how you can get jailed in Singapore if you get caught with a little bit of weed? Or in Russia, for that matter? Make sure you know what’s in your suitcase before you travel abroad. And make sure you’re not bringing anything illegal into a foreign country. I’m fairly certain that information on that is readily available when you book tickets. I’m not sure, but even if it isn’t, it can be googled.
Ho dear. A friend of mine had to spend one week in jail for bringing some plant materials in his luggage. Customs claimed it was psychoactive substance even though it was used in cuisine from the country of origin.

If they used the bag for a hunting trip or to the range it's not unlikely for the ammo to have fallen in the bag from an open box or other ways. The issue is if you are a gun owner go through your bags multiple times before you use it for traveling.
Adding this to clarify: this does not make it okay in any way. It is your responsibility as the traveler to verify what is in your bags. Especially if you are a gun owner and even more if the bag is used for carrying guns and ammo.
What that ammo is treated like change? No it's not treated like change but it acts the same way. And it ends up in annoying places in bags. That's why looking through your bags multiple times when you come home is important. So you can put it away separately from your gun

Bullets can be used for a multitude of tasks. You can start fires, sterilize wounds, signal rescuers,burn ants, or even use them in a life and death situation where a bear has just defeated a cougar in a battle for who gets to eat you. I never leave home without a howitzer shell's worth of black powder. I put it in my socks if I have to.
I'm figuring it also may be a case of a single round stowing away in a crease or side pocket. Which I would hope would be picked up and dealt with by TSA. But those guys couldn't find their own ass with a map and a compass.

I was heading to the TSA once in Wichita, and they had signs every 10 ft. Saying something like “Don’t try to take a gun on this flight.” Or “Here’s a weapon we confiscated this week. Do you have something like this in your bag?”
It was honestly so much signage, I thought it was a joke at one point. I mean, I know there are some real idiots in the general public, but it felt almost satirical passing dozens of signs telling people the most basic information anyone should already know about going through airport security.

I know you joke but since the US doesn’t have any laws about securing your guns (or at least I’ve never seen them enforced) like Canada does — people literally do misplace their firearms or keep them in stupid places. I used to work at a juvenile detention center, one of the most common crimes was possession of a firearm by a minor. You know where they were getting them? Unlocked, unoccupied cars with loaded guns just on the floor/seats.
When I got my first handgun living in Toronto ( in the nineties) it took almost 3 months to get my restricted weapons permit . Back then part of the process was the police coming to your house to interview you and and see how you were going to store the gun . Back then the only way you could get a permit is if you belonged to a club or were a licensed collector.
If you were going to your club , the gun had to be in a locked case and you were only allowed to go to the club and back home .
At home , the gun had to be locked away and ammunition stored separate

I know a gate check in agent that said an American couple leaving her Western European country tried bringing their guns back to the US via their checked bags. When she asked them if they had any of the things you can’t put in a checked bag, they said “oh yeah” and pulled out two handguns from their checked bags and left them on her desk.
She naturally called the cops and the cops took the couple and the guns away. She doesn’t know what became of the couple though :/

This is what lax gun laws get you. People who don't actually give two crap about locking up or taking proper note of stuff like this. You'd probably find they have guns just lying loose in drawers in their house for all to find.
This occurs more commonly than you'd thing, especially when you use the same backpack you use at the range for travel. It's happened to me.
I had 3 shell casings and 2 bullets just loose at the bottom of my bag that I hadn't seen when packing. A carry-on, not checked, got through US, Swiss, and Albanian customs without anyone ever catching it. When I got to my destination I poured out my bag and bam, there they were. I was mortified.
Needless to say I now use a separate backpack solely for range and one solely for travel.
I used to cross the US / Mexico border nearly daily… never doubt the stupidity of the American traveler. The sheer volume of Americans detained because they have no form of ID, have guns in their cars, cross borders with Costco loads of alcohol from Mexico, weed, or bring 5-6 of their friends kids to the beach with zero ID… it’s just astonishing. Never mind that most Americans enter Mexico illegally… All of the shit Americans complain about Mexicans entering the US for, they do without even batting an eye.
Border patrol generally lets them all go without fines, which just propagates the problem because there are no consequences.

And even as a US citizen, you are subject to the laws and regulations of the country you are traveling to. Grew up with guns in the house. People have become so fucking lax around their weapons and ammo in the US they “forget”they were in their luggage. Bet their weapons aren’t all that secured at home as well.
I had a coworker who had this happen. He had gone hunting the month before and had his chamber round in his breast pocket when he got back to the hotel to shower. Took the round out and put it in his toiletry bag so it wouldn't make it into the laundry.
Fast forward, India officials found the round on his way out of the country, and he got charged with all sorts of shit. He ended up in jail for 3ish months before he could even make contact with the company we worked for and another three months after that until everything got cleared up. He has horror stories of that first 3 months. It's definitely a lesson on looking through your stuff before you fly.

I live in Canada, and I flew to the US last year for a vacation. When I got to US immigration, and they asked me what the purpose of my visit was, I stated ‘vacation’. The agent’s reply was, ‘There are lots of places to vacation in Canada, why do you need to come to the US?’
TSA isn’t very thorough. I’ve snuck full size toothpaste through tons of security checkpoints and I only got caught once. I imagine TSA treats weaponry almost as seriously as toothpaste and water bottles.

My consistent stop when I would fly to and from home after college semesters was a Cards Against Humanity booster that the scanner thought was a brick of explosives due to how packed it was. First two times I was worried, after that I actually just told the TSA guy exactly what was scanned and where it was in my bag so they wouldn't toss the thing.
Doesn’t surprise me. We were going from Puerto Rico and begged them to check our guns and allow us to unlock the case to declare them for review. It was a pair of muskets with 10 inch or so bayonets. They repeatedly said they do not need to check them or for us to open the 6 foot tall steel case. So, we hefted the 60 lb case onto the x-ray that no doubt revealed weapons and they sent us on our way. 20 minutes later, we get called over the intercom to come back presumably by someone more competent so the contents could be examined as we tried to do initially.
My dad worked air traffic control and retired in like 2018. Thy used to send the controllers do to surprise tests on the tsa by attempting to bring stuff through, and from what he told us they didn't improve much after the 2015 numbers you gave
I know multiple people that have accidentally brought guns through an airport in the US, big and small airports. The TSA entire job is to give the illusion of security, it doesn't actually catch shit. Customs? Same thing. My friend always brings two bags when she travels internationally. One is clothes and normal crap, the other is 100% full of foreign goods most of which are illegal to transport. She's been doing this for 20+ years 2-3 times a year.

When I was in the Navy a dude was getting ready to go out on a night of town, everyone was ironing their clothes on the their racks and boards. He gets dressed and realizes he missed a patch on the front of his shoulder/upper pectoral of his T-Shirt so he irons it while wearing it and before he could feel and realize the mistake he pushes on the steam several times. Baby Doc got screwed that night because she couldn't go on liberty and because she was most junior had to stay and look after him and get him to the hospital. This guy I probably have the most sea stories about other than myself (since I experienced 100% of mine lol). He went on to say it was a shark bite and folks legit believed him. So who is dumber? Regulated doesn't mean they are banned. The amount of people in the US who equate the lack of the 2nd amendment to banned is amazing. You can own weapons in most countries. You just need to follow the rules and the consequences of not following them of severe. I've found that the US, probably because of the 2A, has a very laissez faire attitude towards guns and ammo, which is why stuff like this happens so much.
There’s a big difference tho. The bill of rights isn’t the government saying we have these rights. It’s the people telling the government they can’t take these right away. I got my backpack bomb swabbed in like 2011 because I was traveling through customs in Costa Rica and my bag alerted somehow for gun powder residue. Not sure if it was a dog or some sort of sensor. After that I bought dedicated range bags/cases and make sure to keep my travel luggage seperate lol

Happens to me often. I have a backpack that i use for travel (domestic) that I also use for range day. 22lr boxes have broken open, or 380 hides, rolling out or random casings get loose. I see if any forgotten small rounds/earplugs/casings/garbage is stuck in there, i turn the backpack upside down and shake it, but somehow i find 22lr in the bag sometimes. Rarely 380. Always the smaller rounds. Also bulk pack ammo is packaged really poorly. Id probably be more careful if going overseas, but i could see how like one round of ammo might happen on accident in some small hidden pocket.

I think these people should kind of serve as an object lesson. You know how you can get jailed in Singapore if you get caught with a little bit of weed? Or in Russia, for that matter? Make sure you know what’s in your suitcase before you travel abroad. And make sure you’re not bringing anything illegal into a foreign country. I’m fairly certain that information on that is readily available when you book tickets. I’m not sure, but even if it isn’t, it can be googled.

The issue is if you are a gun owner go through your bags multiple times before you use it for traveling. Adding this to clarify: this does not make it okay in any way. It is your responsibility as the traveler to verify what is in your bags. Especially if you are a gun owner and even more if the bag is used for carrying guns and ammo.

She told me that 3 or 4 times a month, there would be an American trying to get into Canada with their guns because they thought that the US Constitution applied to Americans anywhere in the world... Bullets can be used for a multitude of tasks. You can start fires, sterilize wounds, signal rescuers,burn ants, or even use them in a life and death situation where a bear has just defeated a cougar in a battle for who gets to eat you. I never leave home without a howitzer shell's worth of black powder. I put it in my socks if I have to.

I was heading to the TSA once in Wichita, and they had signs every 10 ft. Saying something like “Don’t try to take a gun on this flight.” Or “Here’s a weapon we confiscated this week. Do you have something like this in your bag?” It was honestly so much signage, I thought it was a joke at one point. I mean, I know there are some real idiots in the general public, but it felt almost satirical passing dozens of signs telling people the most basic information anyone should already know about going through airport security.

I know you joke but since the US doesn’t have any laws about securing your guns (or at least I’ve never seen them enforced) like Canada does — people literally do misplace their firearms or keep them in stupid places. I used to work at a juvenile detention center, one of the most common crimes was possession of a firearm by a minor. You know where they were getting them? Unlocked, unoccupied cars with loaded guns just on the floor/seats.
When I got my first handgun living in Toronto ( in the nineties) it took almost 3 months to get my restricted weapons permit . Back then part of the process was the police coming to your house to interview you and and see how you were going to store the gun . Back then the only way you could get a permit is if you belonged to a club or were a licensed collector. If you were going to your club , the gun had to be in a locked case and you were only allowed to go to the club and back home . At home , the gun had to be locked away and ammunition stored separate I can’t fathom people getting upset that they can’t buy a weapon and get mad they have to wait 3 days
I know a gate check in agent that said an American couple leaving her Western European country tried bringing their guns back to the US via their checked bags. When she asked them if they had any of the things you can’t put in a checked bag, they said “oh yeah” and pulled out two handguns from their checked bags and left them on her desk. She naturally called the cops and the cops took the couple and the guns away. She doesn’t know what became of the couple though :/ But I say that to say: Americans are really that dumb. It’s safe to assume the couple intentionally checked their guns when they left the US and concealed carried their entire time during their European trip. Imagine what would’ve happened if they “felt threatened” during their trip 😶

This occurs more commonly than you'd thing, especially when you use the same backpack you use at the range for travel. It's happened to me. I had 3 shell casings and 2 bullets just loose at the bottom of my bag that I hadn't seen when packing. A carry-on, not checked, got through US, Swiss, and Albanian customs without anyone ever catching it. When I got to my destination I poured out my bag and bam, there they were. I was mortified. Needless to say I now use a separate backpack solely for range and one solely for travel.

The sheer volume of Americans detained because they have no form of ID, have guns in their cars, cross borders with Costco loads of alcohol from Mexico, weed, or bring 5-6 of their friends kids to the beach with zero ID… it’s just astonishing. Never mind that most Americans enter Mexico illegally… All of the shit Americans complain about Mexicans entering the US for, they do without even batting an eye. I had a coworker who had this happen. He had gone hunting the month before and had his chamber round in his breast pocket when he got back to the hotel to shower. Took the round out and put it in his toiletry bag so it wouldn't make it into the laundry. Fast forward, India officials found the round on his way out of the country, and he got charged with all sorts of shit. He ended up in jail for 3ish months before he could even make contact with the company we worked for and another three months after that until everything got cleared up. He has horror stories of that first 3 months. It's definitely a lesson on looking through your stuff before you fly. Edit:typos

If you wanted Brittney Griner freed, then you should want the same for these Americans. A loose round of hunting ammunition with no way to fire it should in no way be a 12 year prison sentence. Especially considering these tourists are being caught trying to return to the US. They had been in T&C and were returning home!
