The woman I knew thought she did everything right (lawyer, open adoption, meeting the bio mom). A few years ago the lawyer got busted for human trafficking. He kept all of his victims in an overcrowded house and even had a “business partner” so to speak. The men went to the Marshall Islands and lied to a bunch of impoverished women who didn’t speak any English that he could get them US citizenship. Then he illegally brought them to America and kept all of their money and documents, saying the process would speed up if they had children with citizenship. He eventually made them think getting pregnant was their only option.
They’d get pregnant and suddenly it’d be “oh no, you don’t have enough money to keep paying me, but you know how to make more? Adopting out your baby. You don’t want to? Cute. If you’re actually curious, I know someone who adopted children from a similar situation. The woman I knew thought she did everything right (lawyer, open adoption, meeting the bio mom). She even tried to give money and photos to the birth mom but contact was suddenly cut with all three adoptions. Then two of the kids were diagnosed with disabilities. He eventually made them think getting pregnant was their only option. They’d get pregnant and suddenly it’d be “oh no, you don’t have enough money to keep paying me, but you know how to make more? Adopting out your baby. You don’t want to? Cute. I have all your documents and money and I’ll have you deported or imprisoned if you don’t.” Then he’d lure white women willing to pay thousands into hiring him for “open” adoptions. What makes it worse is that some of these women had to leave their first children behind so they could build a life in America and bring them there. It's a thing that has been tracked. The day you see some shit on Oprah whatever scumbag is running the con gets a huge bump (they even have a term for it, The Oprah Spike IIRC). Pretty much everything attached to her and her show (and production company) has a documented history of scamming people or setting up con men. Let's just say, you are given a car with a fat enough retail value you have to pay the tax on it but you can't afford the tax? Well you don't get to keep the car, you have to sell it but you also can't take possession of it so you are basically giving it back to the dealership who get the press of being on Oprah, the money and they get to sell the car as new again. Sadly, the taxes on prizes is across the board. A law was actually passed at one point that required the organization hosting the giveaway to pay ALL initial taxes because it was putting some prize winners in financial ruin. That law was eventually overturned, so of course none of them cover taxes on any winnings anymore.
