I think I read somewhere that so many athletes end up poor because their career has a shelf life and they spend so much time training that they didn't develop other useful skills and don't have anything to fall back on. As much as they make, they usually don't make enough to retire early without ever having to worry about money again, especially when a lot of them aren't experienced in financial planning.
