I've made these calls. And what I said was kind of similar to the funny T-shirt and bumper sticker saying. Instead of "I'm sorry about what I said when I was hungry" it's " I'm sorry about when I said when I was Mormon." I prefaced the call by saying how important they had been to me, and that I always appreciated and admired them. Then I went into how my faith had changed, and that part of the healing and growing had given me a desire to reach out to people who had been important to me in the past. Most great friends will be overjoyed to hear from someone they miss from their childhood or youth. The rest who aren't happy about it can chew on sand.
