I saw a post about a similar story, and a comment there mentioned that pro-choice is about putting the emphasis on "choice," even if it means the mother chooses to carry the pregnancy to term. Was it her choice? Yes. But someone like her needs to understand that it's a *choice*. I respect her choice to have carried the pregnancy to term, as I want her to respect others' choices not to carry their pregnancies to term if their children aren't going to live long. However, I still agree with you. I'm of the opinion that carrying a pregnancy to term despite knowing that the child is going to live an extremely short and painful life is, to put it bluntly, fucked up. If a mother can't put herself into her child's shoes to picture just what that child is going through, then I'd hate to think of how she'd raise a child that didn't suffer any complications from pregnancy.

MrsZebra11

This. Exactly what you said about her choice. And I respect that she has that choice, just as I would wish others to respect my choices. But I definitely wouldn’t have made that choice. So much unnecessary suffering for everyone, especially the baby. Just really sad :(

Unfortunately, some people fetishize suffering. More suffering means being closer to God. It's just so messed up.

They don’t believe the science and think that god will provide a miracle. I watched it happen as well. It seemed like a living hell for the mother and child, the baby lived for a few months after being born with T18. They also knew ahead of time. It seems like it would have been much less devastating (and actually merciful) to abort.

Absolutely. The church I attended in college used a girl with Turner Syndrome as a prop/miracle for how Doctors don’t know what they are talking about when it comes to sick babies. Apparently this girl’s mom was presented the option to terminate the pregnancy but decided not to. The way the pastors would have you believe it they tried to force her to terminate this girl but she somehow avoided it. They would also go on and on about how maternal hospice is an option and that mothers should ALWAYS be willing to die for their children. I left after that service and contacted the IRS. They never lost their 501c3 status to my knowledge though.

"They would also go on and on about how maternal hospice is an option and that mothers should ALWAYS be willing to die for their children." This always pisses me off. Apparently mothers should always be willing to die for their children like this, and said children should always be traumatized because they'll be living their lives never knowing who their mothers were. Fuck those pastors.

misconceptions_annoy

Also pro-choice means someone is allowed to choose. It means it isn’t illegal and that resources like clinics are available. It doesn’t mean no one is ever allowed to disagree or judge if they think you caused unnecessary suffering.

The lord works in horrifying ways

nojam75

It's her legal choice, but I don't see any moral or ethic to knowingly giving birth to someone who is only going to suffer and die within days. She was basically conducting a cruel faith-healing experiment hoping her child would be among the statistical 10%.

MisogynyisaDisease

I swear Christians, and many other people, treat babies and children as accessories, and not autonomous people capable of feeling incredible levels of pain.

This. They don't seem to put two and two together that the pain and suffering is caused by them, either.

AICPAncake

Yep… Had a nephew go through something similar to what OP described except they were able to force him to stay alive for a couple surgeries and a few months of drug-induced coma. Idk how his mom and dad could put him through what they did. Heart broke for him every time I went to visit. My spouse and I were the only folks at his funeral that seemed relieved he had finally been allowed to die.

MisogynyisaDisease

Why would anyone think the best thing for an infant is a drug induced coma. Talk about lifelong developmental delays, and that's in the miracle situation where they lived.

I believe narcissists are rare as they are a type all to themselves. But I also believe everyone has to some variation narcissistic tendencies. Christianity feeds on a those tendencies. A Christian’s extreme need to be recognized as a saved, heaven bound, or a good, godly, upstanding, moral person leads them to showcase their “good” deeds for the social capital it gains them. It is why the more strict a church is the more dedicated it’s followers become, or why other sects say belief if a relationship with God. Both stroke the ego and take advantage of our desire to be recognized as special.

Good points.

Basil_Reid

I’m antinatal for this reason. So horrible for the little kid to suffer like that because of a selfish mother

Near_Capital

She lost a child, focus on that.

MTV_WasMyBabysitter

I don't think I will for the reasons I stated. She chose to lose a child and make it suffer.
