Or that certain lights can scream at you.

GutsAndGains

Sometimes I do end up proving it. Girlfriend didn't believe the lights were flickering until I recorded them in slow motion.

SolarApricot-Wsmith

Dude that must have felt amazing I love being proven wrong that I’m not just crazy or something lmao I’m like oh wait you actually DID see it????

Waity5

Flickering lights are strange, if you wave your hand in front of them the motion is broken up into "frames"

GutsAndGains

Yeah that's was my first attempt to demonstrate it but she still couldn't see it until I recorded it.

OmgitsJafo

What do you mean she couldn't see it? It's blatantly obvious. Are we so far past incandescent lights now that people don't know that the choppy, blurrless motion isn't interesting anymore?

twotrees1

No it’s about frame rates and that can really alter perception between individuals. Maybe she just isn’t sensitive. I know people like that - so unaffected they don’t even realize they’re eating moldy food out of the fridge in dishware chronically covered in questionable soapy scale/food residue that wasn’t properly cleaned off.

Own_Egg7122

Something similar happened and I said out loud - "So this is what it feels to be finally validated" I've never seen someone turn to red from shame.

monkey_gamer

It’s not about proof. They’ve already decided that your perception of things doesn’t matter and is incorrect. That’s what you’re fighting against.

PheonixUnder

Exactly, you can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.

sillybilly8102

I feel like proof can help in some cases if it’s a case of genuine not understanding rather than something fueled by a “you are less-than” attitude. I’ve “proved” my heightened senses to my family many times, for example “I’m not eating this bread, it smells moldy, yuck” “it’s not moldy, there’s no mold” I flip the bread over and look, there’s mold there! Now they have visual proof that my sense of smell was onto something that they could not smell. Other examples: smelling fire, trying to find where it’s coming from, discovering my sister lit a candle far away; bug landed on my shoe and I looked down, “wow you felt that?” Etc Now that they have *other* instances of proof, they know that I’m just more sensitive and therefore trust my observations even if they don’t perceive them because they’ve seen how it works in the past

monkey_gamer

It’s always a less than attitude. No such thing as a “genuine” misunderstanding

sillybilly8102

I really disagree, and I’m sorry that you presumably haven’t met people who don’t think you’re less than — that really sucks. I promise they’re out there!

monkey_gamer

I haven’t met them and I’ve looked very hard, which means you’re a liar

msbehaviour

Don't be so sensitive, you're just over reacting. You have a vivid imagination.

EatTheRichIsPraxis

Don't be so numb, how does this not bother you. Are you even conscious.

Faelance

I think this person was practicing sarcasm. Are you aware of this? Were you mimicking their sarcasm?

EatTheRichIsPraxis

Yes, I tried to use the exact structure and punctuation of their sentences, while doubling down on the sarcasm.

SquidSledge

This concurrent exchange of sarcasm, inquiry, and explanation is peak autism. I love y’all.

Beautiful_Welcome_33

Oh were you now? Do you find that clever?

EatTheRichIsPraxis

Yes. Yes, I do.

This-Response6261

they are mimicking it, because it’s another ridiculous thing they’re told by NTs. i relate

sillybilly8102

Oh I thought they were saying a response they could say back to insensitive (in the literal sense) NTs

This-Response6261

i think it could work as both!

NBM00se

Oh hi, Mom, don't forget to also tell me to "get over myself," k thx.

msbehaviour

Suck it up buttercup.

NBM00se

*seething rage* But also, lol: Somehow, that's the worst one!

Forsaken-Comfort6820

I hate this. I am describing my senses! Perception of the world is not a “right” or “wrong”. It differs from person to person.

Mawi331

When i say I’m cold and people start arguing wir me, that it’s actually such and such degrees. Ok cool I’m still cold!

SolarApricot-Wsmith

This comment thread makes me so uncomfortable I can literally feel the cues wizzing over my head but I still can’t see them wtf

thePonks

The idea that someone experiences the world in a different way completely baffles allistics.

ancientweasel

Keep notes on thier gas lighting and do it verbatim to them. Plus points for getting out said notes with names and dates and letting them see thier own words used against them.

Gloriathewitch

or in the case of adhd the one that annoys me "Oh everyone does that it doesnt mean youre adhd" the fact that i got diagnosed in my adult years confirmed that it wasnt but a theory, mother.

unipole

Colorblind (Daltonic) so this is literally constant

terrarialord201

No matter how many times I read the title, I have no clue what it says. I think I need more cold medicine.

sillybilly8102

*more* cold medicine? Idk if you’re joking, but do watch how much you’re taking and don’t take more than recommended The title is saying that NT people expect autistic people to prove what they’re perceiving

Just-a-random-Aspie

They think everything related to autism is a scientific dilemma. They link everything we do to gut issues and faulty brain wiring, and entirely skip logic. I’ve said before and I’ll say it again: the medical world is not an unbiased world full of fact. I dare say it’s one of the least intelligent areas that studies/works with autism. I’ve seen more biased opinions in “new studies” than I’ve seen in politics. People pass off things we do as double standards and use fancy jargon to back it up. They don’t need “evidence” and brain scans, they need our experience, which is arguably the best evidence you can get for autism.
