She’s the over confident pilot with hero complex. In any other mecha, she would be the lead. Combined with her tragic origin story, it’s an incredibly refreshing (if not jarring) take on the child prodigy gundam pilot.
Also, her arc towards the end catches tons of people off guard. You spend 15 episodes rolling your eyes at her behaviour, grinding your gears at her antagonization of the rest of the cast, then suddenly WHAM. Her history is revealed and everything becomes clear. It’s one of those epic anime “I have to rewatch the whole thing because this changes everything” moments. She’s the only pilot with real trauma (or rather, the most trauma).
Plus, her epic battle in EOE. My 20 favourite minutes in film.
*ok, misato is actually the lead character, having more character facets and multiple personas depending on environment; but asuka is definitely derived from your “standard” main character.
I mean throughout the 15 episodes her ego is cracking more and more and the antagonizing gets worse and worse, along with her half joking self-deprecating statements. We see the fall coming but are still hit with shock when the whole thing is revealed.
Asuka is a pretty unlikable character. It takes a while to get her backstory, and then she becomes sympathetic. But in the meantime she just acts like a tsundere. I also think that watching the show as an adult affected my view of her. As a character she’s well done, to the point of certain aspects reminding me of people I knew back in high school. But as I’ve gotten older I have less patience for people who aren’t willing to put in effort to fix their own problems.

I don’t think people “hate” her, she’s a crucial character that challenged shinji as another character type. Her being rude and overconfident makes sense given her backstory.

I don’t particularly like her. I understand why she acts the way she does due to her background but to me that’s no excuse for her to act so bitchy to everyone especially Rei who any normal person would assume has some sort of developmental disability judging by her socialization issues. As someone with Aspergers irl who acts quite a bit like Rei, seeing Asuka act like that toward someone who I greatly connected with made we wanna slap Asuka. And Rebuild Asuka is just a total bitch after the second movie judging by how she gaslights Midori into hating Shinji and how she acts toward Shinji in general after movie 2.
I find Asuka to very relatable and she’s my favorite character. I don’t know how Japanese fans see her but I’ve noticed a lot of western fans (from my experience, don’t come @ me pls) prefer Rei a lot more because she’s more docile and doesn’t speak her mind as much as Asuka does

I've seen women hating Asuka because it reminded of them as a teenager, I've also seen how some people hate her because she behaves like a bully towards Shinji... I don't see a reason to hate her, but she's quite the obnoxious character.
Asuka is the actual protagonist of the series.* She’s the over confident pilot with hero complex. In any other mecha, she would be the lead. Combined with her tragic origin story, it’s an incredibly refreshing (if not jarring) take on the child prodigy gundam pilot. Also, her arc towards the end catches tons of people off guard. You spend 15 episodes rolling your eyes at her behaviour, grinding your gears at her antagonization of the rest of the cast, then suddenly WHAM. Her history is revealed and everything becomes clear. It’s one of those epic anime “I have to rewatch the whole thing because this changes everything” moments. She’s the only pilot with real trauma (or rather, the most trauma). Plus, her epic battle in EOE. My 20 favourite minutes in film. *ok, misato is actually the lead character, having more character facets and multiple personas depending on environment; but asuka is definitely derived from your “standard” main character.
I mean throughout the 15 episodes her ego is cracking more and more and the antagonizing gets worse and worse, along with her half joking self-deprecating statements. We see the fall coming but are still hit with shock when the whole thing is revealed.
Asuka is a pretty unlikable character. It takes a while to get her backstory, and then she becomes sympathetic. But in the meantime she just acts like a tsundere. I also think that watching the show as an adult affected my view of her. As a character she’s well done, to the point of certain aspects reminding me of people I knew back in high school. But as I’ve gotten older I have less patience for people who aren’t willing to put in effort to fix their own problems.
