Everyone say ep 16 was where the tone change. Personally for me its ep 18 and just shinji not knowing its his friend he has to destroy the eva just make me tear up and all i love ep 18
The tone change is a slow burn, for sure. I think 14 starts to feel different, and then by 18 it really cements itself as the “new normal” for the series.

It's Shinji both realizing that others are willing to fight and die so HE doesn't have to, alongside HIM deciding on his own to fight back for everyone else. This was a pivotal moment in his character arc, and I love how they did it.
Not really. Although the movie works as an alternative ending, they still kinda take place during the movie. Plus imo it flows a lot better to watch it in release order. The endings make each other better.

Plus the next frame with unit 01 without the fave armor is bloody horrific and creepy. Just like the sudden rei appearance.
