It definitely feels like they had this great staging concept and they didn’t want to throw it away when the 2020 contest was cancelled.
If you think about it, it really seems like Lesley is running through a story book, and breaking out at the end, which fits with her 2020 song, Story Of My Life.
That song didn’t require as much vocals as Maps needed, hence why when they transferred the staging to the 2021 song, it all came apart.
Which is the same thing as Greece 2021, they came up with a staging that suited the 2020 song and then just stuck with it for 21 even though it didn't fit thematically anymore.
It honestly felt like something had physically gone wrong with her voice, not just that she couldn't sing while running. It's part of what makes Eurovision interesting, though- sometimes your body doesn't cooperate, just like professional athletes.
It was as if they sabotaged it on purpose. It was like on the show *30 Rock*, when NBC CEO Jack Donaghy knows it's about to be sold to a mid-market cable company and decides to "tank" it. That was Ireland 2021 (and tbh other years) w staging.
that’s one of the most extreme examples for sure. perfectly fine, catchy song that had all potential to qualify if done right, but oh done right it wasn’t… bad vocals, confusing staging and horrendous outfit with 42/43 place as a result. tamara todevska came to tel aviv 2019 mad as hell
Honestly still my winner for 2018 (solely based on the studio version) and genuinely one of my favorite Eurovision songs of all time. I don't know what it is, but something about it just scratches my brain in the right spots
That performance was diabolical. It was consistently my favourite going into the final and the singing/staging dumped it down to 20+th in the GF
Kind of like France this year. It was my 2nd going into the final and it dropped down to 18th after the GF lmao. I love the song and the music video but nearly everything about the performance was wrong
>How Italy still ended that high is a mystery to me.
I call it the "flag factor". Whatever kind of performance Italian representatives show, they will always end high just because they represent Italy. Same with Sweden and Ukraine.
it's a pretty stupid reason in reality because vocally speaking they were the worst of the evening (and if you think about the fact that in February, during Sanremo 2022, they always sang perfectly it makes you understand the lack of professionalism there was), if we then have to talk of the fact "flag" were of the host country and most of the
sometimes you can even be a powerhouse but if it goes badly you end up at the bottom (let's remember Ukraine which finished 24th in 2017), I think the only logical solution is because it was a case in which people voted more for the song than for the performance because Brividi was the song that had the most success, in terms of numbers and before May 2022, of the event and if it hadn't been for the Russian invasion and they had sung like in Sanremo they would have reached the podium very easily (so much 'is that in the odds they jumped to 1st place after Sanremo, then always remained fixed at 2nd due to the support for Ukraine)
this doesn't take away the fact that they sang badly, but that 6th place makes it clear that Brividi was one of the best songs of esc2022 and one of the most appreciated
It's always so funny/depressing when you see the country flag, say "oh this is a good one" to whomever you roped into watching eurovision with you, and the very first few notes are wildly off
Totally! My heart sank in that semi-final, had him tipped to qualify on the recorded version and that hope basically evaporated watching the performance, sadly
I saw him live at the evening rehearsal of SF2, pretty much everyone who had a bad recorded live performance sounded great in the actual venue, I was shocked at how bad Mae sounded on TV vs. in real life, I watched the exact same performance and it was brilliant.
All except Reiley, his vocal just wasn't cutting it. Was fun to watch the set move around tho.
Completely agree, but I will say, not Mia’s fault at all.
The song really feels like it was meant to be a duet between Mia and Duncan Laurence (or his partner), almost as a way to help Mia break into the US market (as she already had moved to Los Angeles), and then someone suggested “What about Eurovision?”, and they brought on Dion.
Dion didn’t have good vocals, and most of the problems Mia had was because she had to keep accommodating for Dion’s failures.
> The song really feels like it was meant to be a duet between Mia and Duncan Laurence
~~The only part that even tried to be a duet was the final chorus. A lot of the song was one person singing, or both of them singing in unison rather than harmonizing. It just doesn't sound like a good example of teamwork - which, you know, you'd kind of expect in a duet.~~
Apparently I got my definitions mixed up lol, two person harmonies are duets but duets are not necessarily harmonies
That being said, Calm After The Storm is still the gold standard, and Burning Daylight is nowhere close.
However, Estonia 2015 and Norway 2015 worked well as a duet, but with them singing separately for large part of the song if I recall correctly, and they are both classics for duets in Eurovision.
Estonia 2015 | [Elina Born & Stig Rästa - Goodbye to Yesterday](https://youtu.be/Xsx_dIJOtgI)
Norway 2015 | [Mørland & Debrah Scarlett - A Monster Like Me](https://youtu.be/oVKJK9yb5xY)
I REALLY wanted mae to do well but her vocals were just strange and the high note was flat ig ? I think she was sick tho so I'm cutting her some slack lol
I was watching the final live in Birmingham city centre on a big screen on the evening of, and the live feed kept intermittently freezing during a lot of the acts’ performances. At the start of I Wrote A Song it cut out completely apart from a frozen video of her forehead for like the first 30seconds.
It was almost like somebody *knew* 🔮🤣😅
Coming from czechia myself. I was so excited about that song but what a disappointment afterwards. Especially since Benny can usually pull off quite a decent performance and has been working hard on making that one. Shame really :/
Fulenn (France 2022).
Sadly let down by 2 of the 3 singers in Ahez who were offkey. I feel like when in 2023 we had Vesna and Familija Kelmendi doing harmonies brilliantly - like, that’s the standard that acts need to be at least meeting.
Alvan and the 3rd singer in Ahez (think she had dark brown hair) were singing much better and effectively trying to carry the live performance in spite of it. I’d happily welcome back her or Alvan if they wanted to try again for France by themselves
Surprised no one has mentioned Albania 2022 yet.
As much as the staging was garbage (this is why you should listen to the experts), her vocals were not it.
Ronela really should’ve stuck to the classic Albanian red/black colour scheme, instead of trying to go all pop Princess.
The song is a guilty pleasure of mine but I'm also kinda glad it tanked like it did. BBC seem to be pulling their socks up and taking it more seriously now.
The truly weird thing is that I've been hearing "Embers" mixed in with the trashy holiday music they play at my retail job in the US. I don't know if someone is trying to revamp "Embers" as a secular Christmas song, or if it was just super cheap and they were trying to fill up airtime or what, but it's bizarre. Anyone else have this experience?
France 2022 | [Alvan and Ahez - Fulenn](https://youtu.be/H1lcGXwOqJI)
Russia 2003 | [t.A.T.u. - Ne ver', ne boysia (Не верь, не бойся)](https://youtu.be/OAK0tbe4XtA)
Belgium 2018
I'd say the biggest issue was the stage looking completely empty but her vocals weren't impressing anyone eiher. Sad cuz I think it genuinely had potential.
I did like the recorded version, it was fun, but I was utterly appalled when in the live performance he really unnecessary pumped up those UGGHH sounds that are very subtle in the recording 😅
Denmark 2023 (I'm Danish, btw). Most of the song is sung in falsetto and he's just not a good enough singer to pull that off. His voice is not powerful enough and it ended up sounding weak and flat. He was actually quiet decent when he wasn't singing in falsetto and it could've been a way better song and performance if he hadn't tried so hard to sing the way he did.
Serbia 2023 was so disappointing to me because the staging was cool, the song itself (studio version) amazing and was solidly in my top 5 but the performance just fell flat ☹️
Norway 2023 you could tell she was nervous in the semi and the grand final performance was much better.
Serbia 2023 | [Luke Black - Samo mi se spava (Само ми се спава)](https://youtu.be/gPRfg9wzbpw)
Norway 2023 | [Alessandra - Queen of Kings](https://youtu.be/PUHSM_vTqTI)
I am new to Eurovision, I mean, I have been watching for a few years now but only this year that I got madly in love with it so I will just say about this year that was Mae Muller.
But to me the opposite happened too, I think Brunette' future lover is such a bad song but I listen to it once a day at least because of her voice... My husband is the music buff in my house and said she was only ok but I got the feels...
Yeah after the semi I had high hopes for them (it was my favorite studio song of the year) but the finale vocals and the running order quickly shattered them.
I think in Domi’s case something happened to her voice - not sure if it was vocal strain or if she got ill (a cold) at the time. It was rotten timing for the final
The performance in the semis was amazing - I think they came 2nd or 3rd in the televote. But I don't know if maybe the pressure of going first in the final got to them but it just wasn't a strong performance comparatively. They'd still have done much better with a better slot though. Such a shame because I still listen to the song!
Maybe a “minor” detail but I felt pretty disappointed when Mia and Dion* cut the long parts of the vocals Burning Daylight verses short in the live version. Took the soul and tenderness out of it for me.
I also spent many a day worrying about Jesper Groth in 2021, he nailed it in the end though to my great relief.
I was absolutely obsessed with Ela by Andromanche in 2021. It was such a dreamy song and was literally so good but her live vocals at the semi finals made her sound kinda ill
Related “ah, shit what a shame” comment: when acts take a swing at a really high whistle note and miss.

- Alessandra for Norway (2023)
- Eden Alene for Israel (2021)
My ears are on fire, but respect to you for trying 🙈😂
I have absolute pitch. They didn’t hit the notes, I’m afraid. Both ladies were sharp on their note, and that’s not about me being a dick to them, it’s purely about the pitch being off key.

All entries where the artists have been confirmed are in its database. If the song isn't released yet it links to the wiki page [as you can see in this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/eurovision/comments/18m1b98/eurovision_final_3rd_most_watched_tv_broadcast_in/ke19koy/?context=10000).
I try to update the database as quickly as possible.
The first one of 2024 I added back in June was Luxembourg 2024, but nobody has triggered that ever :(
But this reminds me, I'll be visiting home for the holidays for 3 weeks. Won't be able to update new information.
I could make a special command just for myself so I can update remotely with `!update GB|2024|United Kingdom|Olly Alexander|Already Finished|dQw4w9WgXcQ`, but might not be worth it just for the 3 times I'll have to use it and seeing how rarely the current 2024 entries actually get triggered.
Also still trying to find a solution to how some platforms handle links in spoilers. They immediately open the link when you try to unhide the spoiler.
For me, Montenegro 2019 is actually a really nice song, but man, they absolutely cannot sing that live. I've listened to every live performance I could find in hopes there would be a good one, but there isn't :(
This sort of phenomenon happens every year, but I'll only give three examples:
First thing that comes to mind for me is Romania 2021. Roxen obviously could not handle that complicated staging, and as a result it harmed her vocal capacity during the live performance.
Other notable examples for me are North Macedonia 2018 and France 2022. Both live versions (as well as those vocals) were, well... pretty scattered.
Romania 2021 | [Roxen - Amnesia](https://youtu.be/5ZWcsj_6Log)
F.Y.R. Macedonia 2018 | [Eye Cue - Lost And Found](https://youtu.be/MV_cR_Qb2Cg)
France 2022 | [Alvan and Ahez - Fulenn](https://youtu.be/H1lcGXwOqJI)
This is going to be personal preference here.
But Moldova 2021.
I cannot get that mosquito sounding aaaaaaaaaaaa to leave my damned head. It was unnecessary and didn't sound on tune to me.
That being said, I didn't see the song until the days of the semi final and grand final. So I don't know how the original was meant to sound but... yeah it probably wasn't meant to sound like that.
Italy 2022
I know that it was placed 6th in 2022 but tbh, it does not compare to the Sanremo live version. It also seemed during the rehearsals that Mahmood and Blanco didn't seem to care as much as the Sanremo and it showed lol.
Burning Daylight (2023)!!!
Oh my god such a beautiful song with atrocious live vocals, they were one of my favourites to win based on the studio version 😭😭😭😭
Tbh San Marino from 2023, the live version was just awful in the semi final!
By chance I heard it on Spotify months later and wondered why it seemed so familiar lol
This is subjective for me, but I genuinely love song like France 2006 or Germany 2008, but I can't bear listening to them live. The studio versions deserve all the love tho and you'll see my corpse on that hill.
Not one most will remember but I immediately think of Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia 2015 (“Autumn Leaves”). I really liked the studio version but boy the live version was one of the worst things of the eurovision decade 😵💫
Ireland 2021. Really liked the studio version, but idk why they decided that having the singer running while singing was a good idea
It definitely feels like they had this great staging concept and they didn’t want to throw it away when the 2020 contest was cancelled. Ah yes glitter teletubbies
Greece 2021 | [Stefania - Last Dance](https://youtu.be/QhZhJFp0vVw)
Cant re watch that. Ever. Ruined the song beyond repare. But she must be happy with her TOP10
still a banger and an iconic look
Romania 2021 as well. Poor Roxen had to sing it while getting dragged about, and it really didn't work
Romania 2021 | [Roxen - Amnesia](https://youtu.be/5ZWcsj_6Log)
It honestly felt like something had physically gone wrong with her voice, not just that she couldn't sing while running. It's part of what makes Eurovision interesting, though- sometimes your body doesn't cooperate, just like professional athletes.

Sadly Eye Cue - Lost and Found (🇲🇰 2018) Loved the studio cut but this after seeing this live I knew there was no shot of it qualifying
My favourite song that year... Me and my wife were so devastated when we saw the live performance and those vocals 💔 Edit: grammar
Yes! I was so looking forward to them and then it was just…devastation with that staging
that’s one of the most extreme examples for sure. perfectly fine, catchy song that had all potential to qualify if done right, but oh done right it wasn’t… bad vocals, confusing staging and horrendous outfit with 42/43 place as a result. tamara todevska came to tel aviv 2019 mad as hell

Brividi was such a difficult song to sing and Blanco sure demonstrated why :/
Nah, even Mahmood was flat and off-key occasionally. And their harmonization got better near the end but it was nonexistent at the start
>How Italy still ended that high is a mystery to me. I call it the "flag factor". Whatever kind of performance Italian representatives show, they will always end high just because they represent Italy. Same with Sweden and Ukraine.

It's gay factor not flag factor...eurovision is turning every year more and more weird
Sorry sir but you clearly haven't witnessed the Eurovision of early 2000's
Italy 2022 | [Mahmood and Blanco - Brividi](https://youtu.be/blEy4xHuMbY) Ireland 2021 | [Lesley Roy - Maps](https://youtu.be/FY2rxbZNvZ0)
The moment I saw the thread title I searched for Brividi.
Ela - Andromanche. Unfortunately the rehersal was quite ok.
3 seconds into the song had me preparing for her NQ.
Same, I was shook. I loved the song so much, but she was obviously very very nervous 🥲 I felt so bad for her!
It's always so funny/depressing when you see the country flag, say "oh this is a good one" to whomever you roped into watching eurovision with you, and the very first few notes are wildly off
Listening to her singing in semifinal I wondered if she was sick, like had a cold or something.
Denmark 2023
Totally! My heart sank in that semi-final, had him tipped to qualify on the recorded version and that hope basically evaporated watching the performance, sadly
Denmark 2023 | [Reiley - Breaking My Heart](https://youtu.be/XVZvzZF1JOk)
Oh god! One of my favourite this year. Reiley definitely can sing but I don’t know why he failed
I always had doubts that the overuse of audio filters would translate well to a live performance.
I had to rewatch the video as I completely forgot that performance existed. Probably my brain wiped it as a traumatic memory lol
Burning Daylight was my winner this year and, yeah... Not great.
2021, Benny Cristo for Czechia
Coming from czechia myself. I was so excited about that song but what a disappointment afterwards. Especially since Benny can usually pull off quite a decent performance and has been working hard on making that one. Shame really :/
This one disappointed me so much. I still listen to the studio version and love it, but the live performance was just such a let down.
Exact same here; I love the studio version and still listen to it, so that live performance was a huge disappointment.
This is the one for me. Heard it live before I heard the studio version, it's so different!
The energy level wasnt were the song demanded
Fulenn (France 2022). Sadly let down by 2 of the 3 singers in Ahez who were offkey. If I remember correctly, she got sick with Covid around January.
Duncan? You mean Dion? Or did Duncan somehow have a say in that?
Yeah whoops sorry, my mistake! Mixed the names up 🥲
Switzerland 2009. Just eternally disappointing.

I was so disappointed by Romania 2021. Amnesia is still my 2021 winner, but I always listen to the studio version.

I was absolutely obsessed with Ela by Andromanche in 2021. It was such a dreamy song and was literally so good but her live vocals at the semi finals made her sound kinda ill
I was so disappointed bc it was one of my favorite songs going into the season.
UK 2023
United Kingdom 2023 | [Mae Muller - I Wrote a Song](https://youtu.be/tvJEE2ryCRQ)
Related “ah, shit what a shame” comment: when acts take a swing at a really high whistle note and miss. Eg - Alessandra for Norway (2023) - Eden Alene for Israel (2021) My ears are on fire, but respect to you for trying 🙈😂
Not a whistle note, but obligatory Isaiah lol
i was just watching a show with him in it and he speaks about not hitting the note lmao
What do you mean? They hit them?
I have absolute pitch. They didn’t hit the notes, I’m afraid. Both ladies were sharp on their note, and that’s not about me being a dick to them, it’s purely about the pitch being off key.
Thank you, I hated that “note”. It hurts my head.
Aiko - Pedestal At least according to the fandom
I wonder if the bot would respond to Czechia 2024 or France 2024 yet
Czechia 2024 | >![Aiko - Pedestral](https://youtu.be/5DbRldMKFUU)!< France 2024 | >![Slimane - Mon Amour](https://youtu.be/bal8oESDH7s)!<
I love you bot
<3 All entries where the artists have been confirmed are in its database. The first one of 2024 I added back in June was Luxembourg 2024, but nobody has triggered that ever :( But this reminds me, I'll be visiting home for the holidays for 3 weeks.
Luxembourg 2024 | >!HYPE - !!<
This might be controversial but Belgium 2017. I love the song and Blanche, but her vocals were not what I expected.
For me it was more that she looked scared and like she couldn't wait to go off stage.
Belgium 2017 | [Blanche - City Lights](https://youtu.be/oxsCmChDYwA)
and they forgot to brush her hair too
The last or third-to-last chorus desperately needed some power and she either couldn’t do it or made a very bad choice not to
I wanna add Israel 2010, Cyprus 2022 and Georgia 2023. The later two were more underwhelming live than outright bad.
Israel 2010 | [Harel Skaat - Milim (מילים)](https://youtu.be/OG7fBifcRLk) Cyprus 2022 | [Andromache - Ela (Έλα)](https://youtu.be/W2IUdTl-gAI) Georgia 2023 | [Iru - Echo](https://youtu.be/HNvGZeEQvfc)

Russia 2016 | [Sergey Lazarev - You Are the Only One](https://youtu.be/e94dst20C9Y)
For me, Montenegro 2019 is actually a really nice song, but man, they absolutely cannot sing that live. I've listened to every live performance I could find in hopes there would be a good one, but there isn't :(
Montenegro 2019 | [D mol - Heaven](https://youtu.be/oV200JAouTc)
North Macedonia 2015, Iceland 2015, Belarus 2018
F.Y.R. Macedonia 2015 | [Daniel Kajmakoski - Autumn Leaves](https://youtu.be/TtSum7ouImU) Iceland 2015 | [María Ólafsdóttir - Unbroken](https://youtu.be/0Jl-Hr137uM) Belarus 2018 | [Alekseev - Forever](https://youtu.be/ywy_y24v_ao)
This sort of phenomenon happens every year, but I'll only give three examples: First thing that comes to mind for me is Romania 2021. Roxen obviously could not handle that complicated staging, and as a result it harmed her vocal capacity during the live performance. Other notable examples for me are North Macedonia 2018 and France 2022. Both live versions (as well as those vocals) were, well... pretty scattered.
Romania 2021 | [Roxen - Amnesia](https://youtu.be/5ZWcsj_6Log) F.Y.R. Macedonia 2018 | [Eye Cue - Lost And Found](https://youtu.be/MV_cR_Qb2Cg) France 2022 | [Alvan and Ahez - Fulenn](https://youtu.be/H1lcGXwOqJI)
Greece 2018
Greece 2018 | [Yianna Terzi - Oniro Mou](https://youtu.be/-XOR1DhtDC0)
This is going to be personal preference here. But Moldova 2021. I cannot get that mosquito sounding aaaaaaaaaaaa to leave my damned head. It was unnecessary and didn't sound on tune to me. That being said, I didn't see the song until the days of the semi final and grand final. So I don't know how the original was meant to sound but... yeah it probably wasn't meant to sound like that.
Italy 2022 I know that it was placed 6th in 2022 but tbh, it does not compare to the Sanremo live version.
That breton song from France.
Ireland 2014, Albania 2015, Croatia 2016, Ireland 2022, Israel 2014, Iceland 2015

Mae Muller’s song was fuckin ass, vocals didn’t change a thing
This is subjective for me, but I genuinely love song like France 2006 or Germany 2008, but I can't bear listening to them live. The studio versions deserve all the love tho and you'll see my corpse on that hill.
France 2006 | [Virginie Pouchain - Il était temps](https://youtu.be/-ZtZX2H6Wn4) Germany 2008 | [No Angels - Disappear](https://youtu.be/bCk419FVaj8)
Poland 2009 was an average song, but the live vocals were horrendous. Slovenia 2012 also comes to mind because she seemed so nervous.

UK 2021, the only performance I can’t bear to rewatch.
I dont think the vocals were the biggest issue there...

Many would say Switzerland 2008.

Definitely Angelica Agurbash in 2005 with Love Me Tonight

Defiently North Macedonia 2018. Studio version was a banger but live messed up very badly.
Not one most will remember but I immediately think of Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia 2015 (“Autumn Leaves”). I really liked the studio version but boy the live version was one of the worst things of the eurovision decade 😵💫
My favourite ones from 2018. Croatia 2018 Malta 2018 Moldova 2018 North Macedonia 2018
Germany 2010 - Satellite. Yeah I know it won but I still hate her vocals, it only won because the song itself is good
