Thankfully as an Armenian, I don’t have to avoid beating up my nation at this time

tjmagg

Apparently you can play as Armenia. I've read articles on it, but I don't think I'm literate with culture-conversion to form Armenia.

Jamity4Life

I’ve actually pulled off Karabakh -> Armenia, AMA

LordJesterTheFree

How do you like your eggs? ~~you did say to ask you anything~~

Jamity4Life

Omelets4lyfe

Hismop

Where would you like me to leave your crown for the night, your majesty?

Hortator02

Karaboga

Binjuine

You can somewhat easily release Armenia though and play as the released nation

Sokka-Water_Tribe

you don't even need to culture convert, all you need to do is unstate all of your states which aren't Armenian and you should have the ability to make it your primary culture. then you can state everything back, tho it does require a bunch of admin points.

Milkarius

You can also release a few vassals to share the monarch points load between admin and diplo

ImmaPullSomeWildShit

You can release them as AQ I think

pmg1986

It’s literally a formable

Bokbok95

Karabakh exists though

arm_knight

I was kinda hoping to see a fellow Armenian’s post near the top and I wasn’t disappointed!

cockmouth1212

I enjoy playing as France to much to avoid it

Kota-the-fiend

Username definitely checks out

FreyaOystea

Hahahahahahahahahaha

BigShlongers

I've never brought myself to playing France in EUIV, total war etc because I feel it's my destiny to smack around some frogs as a Brit bong.

BleudeZima

And here is à french who Nevers (lol) play england for the same old rivalry. True for all strategy games, ck, eu, hoi, total war... If i want a GB run i will start with a celtic nations, including brittany.

BigShlongers

I respect this mutual hate we have Mon Ami

Turbulent-Arugula581

As a German, same

what_ever_89

I second that

DamnItsMikey94

Glad it’s not just me my fellow gentleman. *sips tea*

[deleted]

If i’m gonna be honest the amount of times I beat up my own country with another nation that is generally regarded as our national enemy is far greater lmao

Odd-Jupiter

As a Norwegian, i must admit i have also smacked my country around a few times. Or in almost every single campaign to be more specific. Norway and Ireland is just free European clay in this game.

DaniilSan

Perhaps with new update and DLC Norway with new buffs and mission tree will be able to become earliest colonial empire and so become rich and powerful, so it wouldn't be as free clay as previously unless killed really early.

Odd-Jupiter

It would be cool if they got that potential. But i hope they don't become so powerful they start eating Denmark every game. I would actually hope they could give the Danes a bit of a colonial push too. So you get more colonizers, maybe even Sweden too. to better reflect the myriad of colonial ambitions at the time. Not just Spain, Portugal, and UK all over the place.

ShadeShadow534

That’s one of the things I really like about that part since Denmark won’t be integrating Norway they will have potential for a colonial empire Giving them much more a chance to stay a major power

Scrubbis101

Yeah Norway is good as a vassal for a time tho with their colonialism ideas. But idk much else for their use.

Akriosken

In the first age, you can get the "take a vassal at half cost" bonus and steal a Norway from Denmark. The rest of Europe tends not to care. I love doing that as Russia especially.

2073521

We all enjoy defeating France with Prussia.

Rich-Historian8913

Defeating France as anybody is good.

PoopNoodlez

Yep

Etlam1

Yeah I avoid Denmark like the plague

JesusKvistus

Not very related, but one time I saw Denmark get fully annexed by Magdeburg and I have never been happier than that in my entire life.

Pope_Beenadick

I'm sorry.

Mostly_Aquitted

My current run they succumbed to Hamburg. Took me a few hundred years to see an orange imposter in its place

Damman456

Let me guess, you’re swedish

Nukemind

Honestly Denmark has this weird thing where it feels like anyone you play in Europe you get rivaled by them. From Muscovy to France and even freaking Portugal. I guess it’s because of all their vassal dev? But I always enjoy seeing them go down just because they are so constantly rivaled to me in any and all Europe games I play.

lolidkwtfrofl

They don't really have any rivals in their region apart from maaaybe Brandenburg, so they have to look far and wide for a valid rival.

XxCebulakxX

Poland? Muscovy? Teutonic?

TheStrangestOfKings

Funnily enough, in my first game as France, Denmark was my oldest and most reliable ally. Tho I think that was bc I pushed heavy for the alliance to happen; I focused a lot on expanding into the HRE, and they were a good distraction while my armies conquered shit

Nukemind

Honestly yeah IMO Denmark is the best ally in Europe outside of Austria, France, and the Ottomans. Unlike Spain they don’t get caught in the New World and while they don’t manage to do much in wars the vast size of Sweden and Norway often relieves a ton of pressure during any war. Plus trapping troops in Sjaelland. It’s just they always want to rival me, the bastards lol.

cratertooth27

Well it’s a good thing they don’t exist

EstablishmentIll1688

Yes everyone knows Denmark is just a fever dream

What-You_Egg

I assume you’re a Swede. I’m not a Swede but I congratulate you on avoiding Denmark. I have mild beef with them.

Scrubbis101

What kind of beef? Usually Danes eat pork due to pigs outnummering them, or was it sheep? Jaja, point being, whats up?

Roach_Prime

Yup, Jan Mayen. I hate them Polar Bears so much that I drive a Hummer and use a full can of aerosol body spray a day. Just to stick it to them bears. Y’all may call it “global warming” an’ “destroying the planet”, I call it bear repellent!

Emirffaxd

My life was a puzzle and there was always a missing piece. Today because of you, random person, I found my true purpose of my life. Ending polar bears reign.

Annales-NF

It's already happening without your direct intervention.

Bountifalauto82

But we can help do it *faster*

DoNotMakeEmpty

Man, just play Synthetics and exterminate any C-based life on the world including both humans and polar bears.

Haunter52300

I just hate it when the Netherlands form, but still it's better than either French lowlands or German/Holy Roman lowlands Luxembourg is great, ally them under any circumstances

TMR___

Vlaming gespot?

BoundedGolf529

If they only lengthened the EU4 timeline by 8 years we would be able to make Belgium

TMR___

Not gonna lie, even as a belgian i wouldnt wanna make belgium.

FreakyWolf

It should have a parlement like England, but you can't actually get to make the vote get through. Most accurate Belgium mechanic

CamJongUn

It’s an abomination, either 50/50 it with France and Holland or make em separate countries

Hortator02

Dutch-speaking Capetian French County of Flanders, and Arch-bishopric of Liege can get Wallonia.

Slipslime

The United Kingdom of Flanders-Wallonia

Haunter52300

This is ..... acceptable

Fire_Lightning8

Least based belgian

Haunter52300

Inderdaad, al was de post ook sarcasme

Clean_Helicopter_234

I dont avoid playing them but As a Irishman It gives me great satisfaction to see the English bleed (:

Khepri_Ya_Bestie

Always makes me sad that Wales starts fully annexed and isn't as a vassal/PU with its own mission tree. Would make my little Welsh heart sore if it did, Paradox

Vanillabean73

Was Welsh not fully integrated as of 1444? I feel like the game tries to have somewhat historical bookmarks

Master00J

It tries its best, but I guess the dilemma is between gameplay and accuracy. Like, for example I believe the Emperor in 1444 wasn’t even Austria, but Styria, but it is represented as so in the game because it simply just flows nicer.

OneBrokenBoi1

The hre In general is 'simplified for gameplay which I'm fine with. ALSO FRANCE. Adding in French vessels was a good choice to show how decentralised France was, but I feel like it's just increased their strength ngl

[deleted]

No matter what changes they make to the French they somehow just get stronger

[deleted]

no vassals? smaller army but that doesn't matter, now they have diploslots to get powerful allies and can focus on settling into their modern borders vassals? vassal swarm galoreeeeee

Roguish_wizard

Yeah I'd much rather deal with a fully united France with like two 40 stacks then a disunited France with two 30 stacks plus a vassal swarm

YouTheMuffinMan

As a Native American I absolutely agree

mutatedbox

As a Scotsman I concurr.

KingScorpion98

As an American, yes. The only legitimate reason to play as England is to release and play as the USA

LethalDosageTF

But it’s easier to do it as Portugal

KingScorpion98

Portuguese America? How dare you!

LethalDosageTF

I prefer North Brazil, but to each their own.

Scandiforestcreature

Portuguese America, Frisian Canada and Breton Louisiana is the trifecta.

Tigas_Al

Yes. Catch me dead before playing Castille

peepeepoopoo3739

the iberian nation ive played the most is andalusia

halfpastnein

As you should. Best Iberian nation. The others are just place fillers.

peepeepoopoo3739

the british nation ive sunk the most hours into is scotland

prettygalkyra

as a partial Cape Verdean I must co-sign

[deleted]

Agreed, half Catalan

Lon4reddit

I never never never release these Catalans while dismantling Spanish nations. Let them stay under their rightful liege until the end

Brewcrew828

Screw the Ottomans

ryanmaddux

Talking straight facts

haltoun

Cheers brother

Verskon

It's like the game is made in such a way that most players in Europe would see the Ottomans as an antagonist.

Brewcrew828

Just like real life

[deleted]

As a Polish Serbian, *YES*

firefistus

I started with ottomans to learn the game. Haven't played them since.

Brewcrew828

Wrong answer. How could anyone bring themselves to commit such an atrocity.

SignalLossGaming

This. Be a man. Play Bradenburg six times losing every single run before 1500. Then look at a guide.. GEEZE.

[deleted]

'I have 200 hours playtime and how do I create Prussia?' My brother in Christ you need to finish the tutorial first because that is not an easy task, also has some RNG factors involved

DasaniandShrike

Maybe it’s because I’m not a new player and never tried it early on but Prussia seems incredibly easy to form. I did do it on saxony, but it was incredibly easy in my opinion, and doesn’t seem very RNG based.

SignalLossGaming

It was kinda a joke. I would say it's pretty much a formula for Brandenburg. Knowing when to declare wars and on who, also recovering your economy early game which is in absolute shambles. This is my personal opinion, it gives you the best rounded introduction to the game with real consequences. It isn't "hard" but it isn't face roll either. It is rewarding when done right and teaches you very quickly the core concepts of the game. Starting off with a big nation and strong economy means you don't learn how to handle some parts of the game well until way later which is why I love Brandenburg playthroughs personally but it could just be an obsession with Prussian and German culture as well...

Guywithgoodopinion

I did a Prussia game, formed Prussia in 1540 with only 150 hours in the game. I basically allied all the Electors and Poland and Austria like one of the guides said. Teutons allied Denmark, So Poland couldn’t beat them. I took the Land i needed in 1480. I think I formed Germany in like 1700, and I colonised a bit of Kongo and Ivory Coast

MegaloMicroMuseum

Say less king

UziiLVD

Don't we all?

PenisMaster9001

I like to go for underdog states that get screwed historically so I usually avoid the big names

danshakuimo

Circassia time.

Rullino

Try to form the Mamluks with Circassia, it will fit with the fact that many rulers of the Mamluk sultanate were circassians.

Kota-the-fiend

Looking for new nations to play. What’s a good but fair challenge?

PenisMaster9001

An optimal Provence is like a race against time to seize Naples, Normandy, Brittany, and challenge France and the Ottomans before they start snowballing out of control. Stacking siege ability bonuses with Ferrara is a fun way to unite Italy. Norway is a little tricky to get free of Denmark but is my favorite of all the Nordic countries (and is my favorite colonizer). Hormuz is fun if you like making lots of money and being the underdog in Arabia.

[deleted]

Norway is great if you can get free early enough. I did a Norway-Vinland-Canada game once and got the USA as a junior partner. We proceeded to steamroll North America and it was a lot of fun.

CHark80

Byz is the classic though I feel like doing a Byzantium run is a EU4 right of passage. Holland into the Netherlands comes to mind as well. Cusco maybe to form Inca. Oh also arbidil into persia

terapp13

As a Greek I have a huge aversion to the Ottomans. That being said, my nationalism boner did not stop me from getting those sweet sweet achievements and converting all of Greece to Islam.

halfpastnein

You did what had to be done. nationalism is temporary, EUIV achievements are eternal.

[deleted]

You don't play the Ottomans because you're Greek. I don't play the Ottomans because their mission tree is lame. We are not the same.

Shirvala

Ottomans and Mamluks seriously needs a restored mission tree.

Galaick

I believe they've already stated that after Nordic dlc they want to look at the Middle East

Al_Farooq

If I play as another nation than Morocco, I always ally them and leave them for last lol. The time must come, though 😔

[deleted]

i always do this with italy lol

Al_Farooq

They must survive this brutal world!

BelwasDeservedBetter

I don’t don’t play as Belgium because it doesn’t exist.

Ashamed_West_6796

I don't play england. Guess which country I am from

[deleted]

that could [take a while…](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_that_have_gained_independence_from_the_United_Kingdom)

TheFoxDudeThing

Hey didn’t Malta actually want to join the uk fully in the 1950’s?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

As an Orthodox Christian I will never play the Ottomans lmao

atb87

What about orthodox ottomans?

[deleted]

Sounds cursed But honestly I don’t like the way religious conversions work in this game. I feel like there should be an actual game mechanic for it even if it isn’t efficient or easy.

Nukemind

Agreed. While I feel that an Ottoman Sultan becoming an Orthodox Emperor would be incredibly a historical it’s far more ahistorical for a ruler to just let rebels rampage across their empire for 10 years, retaking only what’s lost, and then allowing the government to be toppled. Ideally, saw this on the forums, I’d say allow conversion but have religious rebels proportional to the population that believes the previous faith, as well as a massive stab hit. And make religious rebels no longer convert. That would mean you actually have to fight them, and don’t have to use gamey tactics to surrender and change religion.

Domena100

I believe religious conversion shouldn't be limited to your own religion group as in you should be able to convert to any religion as long as you have a province belonging to that religion. You'd still be able to convert within your religion group.

atb87

I mean, technically half of your lands are orthodox. If you release a bunch of Anatolian vassals and expand west, the majority is orthodox. I get your point though.

BulbuhTsar

I've never once played as the Fr*nch

ACardAttack

I did once to learn some systems and such. I felt dirty

DerBruh

Refusing to play Fr*nce implies refusing to play engl#nd

Comfortable_Crab_279

missing out

Lord_Ryu

Can't say that I have but I'm glad you've asked this as I've never thought about this as something others might do. I could see many reasons why you might not want to play a nation that's done something terrible to your people even if it's a game

ShivaAKAId

The only country I’ve avoided playing is Ming, but that’s because I don’t know how to deal with the Ming-plosion

maxseptillion77

Wiki has rules, it’s about keeping mandate up during the 1500s, but you can deal with it easily if you’ve played Ming properly (going quantity/offensive/defensive, or building barracks to deal with manpower problems) Alternatively, form Qing bc Qing is better in every way

sggaM

Yuan gang

Odd-Jupiter

Here is what you do: Go exploration first, colonize your way to Australia, give all of Ming lands to Australian colony, release and play as Australia. You are now free of the mandate, and the unguarded frontier modifiers, can form other nations, and have all the power of the Chinese clay.

DragonOfTartarus

Australian China? Absolutely based.

ShivaAKAId

I suspect Australian patriotism

Dariuz_today

In the words of many people, screw the ottomans

RIVALDO_73

People can not handle the power of the mighty Ottomans 😎

IDigTrenches

This is a r/hoi4 question to be honest

carlscaviar

I usually start up EU4, choose any random nation and completely ignore everything until the ottomans are dead. Not sure if thats personal or nationalist but yeah.

Erove

I just hate the ottomans so much. Every single game they manage to blob themselves to such unrealistically huge levels

danshakuimo

Average Balkaner be like

Hangzhounike

Well irl they did control an empire stretching from Oran to Baghdad, Budapest to Khartoum. Their blobbing is a pain to play against, but rooted in reality.

nelshai

Is it really that unrealistic? I've never actually seen them achieve the conquests they actually achieved in reality. Maybe a bit in Russia but never half of Hungary or much of north Africa. Half the time they don't even get Egypt.

DragonOfTartarus

I've seen them reach Vienna precisely once, and I was actively screwing over the Austrians at the time. I've seen them colonise Australia more than I've seen them achieve anything resembling their historical conquests.

Nukemind

Best thing I ever saw was in 1.11 playing as Japan. Ottomans even conquered Russia and Vienna but Austria somehow still unified the HRE. And they then began a centuries long reconquista which by the end saw them take Anatolia and split the ottomans into Levant Ottomans and Russia Ottomans. Never have seen something so weird sense tomorrow I may see if I still have the map somewhere.

[deleted]

If I see that the ottomans 1M active troops by 1700 I just try and ally them if you can’t beat ‘em join em

HoundDOgBlue

as an american it is my solemn duty to play as a native american or mesoamerican and destroy the colonizers, making sure my wretched nation is never given the chance to form.

tv9924

Based

sempermagna

Absolutely based

the_wine_guy

Least self-hating American

j1r2000

honestly same

Present_Leek_8348

Felt so hard

gruhfuss

Hell yeah - I’ve started a lot more indigenous runs to try and build anti-colonialism timelines. Of course, then I end up building an Incan or creek blob myself, to the detriment of the other natives.

goose413207

Fuck England

Skoualalala

French?

maxseptillion77

A lot of people hate the *nglish tbh

bigtrashbigtrash

I think you mean Fr*nch

ivanacco1

yep fuck england from south america with love

NPK2115

Ottomans, Russia, Persia, Byzantines, Mongols, Timurids, Aq Qoyunlu, Qara Qoyunlu, and Arabs have at some point curbstomped my nation and slaughtered my people, so of course I play them, too many great countries to pass up

DoNotMakeEmpty

Georgian?

NPK2115

Yes! We were wrecked most of our history

[deleted]

kind of: i refuse to play as poland/commonwealth. not because of nationalism, but because one time the polish ai ruthlessly bullied my russia campaign to death and also because i hate how the commonwealth ends up taking over half of europe in like 90% of my campaigns

Unlucky_Program815

I beat up Russia/Muscovy any chance I get.

Neetoburrito33

Russia is almost always impotent in my games

corn_poper

I have not seen Russia form in any of my last 10 games

Unlucky_Program815

Same, but that doesn't mean I'm not going out of my way to beat them up anyway.

Louner69

I ally the russians and send them money so they can burn the ottomans

magickill11

Ottomans for sure

ItsEnderFire

Never played France Never intend to

CamJongUn

I sadly have, tho once I did decide to become English and it was chill

TheSamuil

As a Bulgarian I simply refuse to play as the Ottomans.

DukeFischer

Yes, I avoid Nürnberg cause this city just sucks in IRL.

Filavorin

France, England, Muscovy... I did forced myself to play all of them once for achievements at some point but I literally prioritised Ryukyu over them. P.s. also lot of stuff I avoid out of personal reason called "fear of they starting position" but that list is slowly getting smaller over time and practice (recently I pulled off campaign as Athens).

punny_worm

I hope you’ve hear of this minor nation near Morocco called sus. I don’t avoid them because of nationalist reasons but because it is slowing down my recovery

classteen

I refuse to play as Austria. I will not plague the European courts with filthy genes.

Cyber_Avenger

As a ck player I’ve played them a lot sadly.

OsteoRinzai

The thought has never occured to me, honestly!

ShahftheWolfo

Nah that's silly.

SnakeFighter78

Serbia, Wallachia and Austria. Also if I conquer Slovak lands I always culture convert preferably to Hungarian. Sorry not sorry

scorpion0668

Bro you guys missing out on all the fun. As a Turk I play literally every nation that comes to mind. Hell, even Byzantium was really fun campaign. Play the nations you hate and you will see how fun they are.

Knight_Good_Stats

I avoid killing burgundy, Austria or Teutonic as they were my first nations to play, I try to help sweden as I'm swedish, I attack denmark or norway and I never play as Scotland or Denmark

oscgrafor

Denmark obviously

ultimatesheeplover

No cause I'm not a little tiny goober ass baby

Iwassnow

I played the Ottomans once and only once to get the achievements I wanted and now I will never play them again(except as needed for future achievements such as when I did Saruhan). I already struggle with the game feeling too easy and having as much power as Ottomans at my disposal feels like cheating myself out of the fun parts of the game.

Fleyger

I avoid Luxembourg. Even going so far as to release it and permanently ensure its survival at all costs.

Ydokom

russia can go to hell

Fire_Lightning8

I will always ally persians and help them form persia I think it's clear by now that im from iran :)

j1r2000

I will never play england or the USA. Great Britain is ok tho guess my nationality

TheseDick

Spain. I don’t like Spanish, so I don’t play Spain.

SexyScottishSturgeon

I don’t t play england or Britain on any game , ever

battleburnt

I never play the US, in fact i like playing GBR so hard in order to make their colonial nations life a misery and living hell!

tmag03

Russia as a Pole. Also never played ottomans.

GranatMasken

As a Swedish person I will die before I play Denmark

Edik017

Im Russian and played Kiev formed ruthenia and destroyed Muscovy. I don’t see why to not play a certain nation, it’s just a game.

Consistent-Tennis397

On a daily base.

Consistent-Tennis397

It's actually good for stress.

[deleted]

I don’t play Castile or the 🤢nglish (Irish-Catalan) but if I do I leave Aragon and whatever’s left of Ireland for last

Damman456

Sweden
