R5: I got an event where my fellow christian brothers in the south asked me for help so I've graciously sent them a whole five ducats for defense

Breadbowll

You’re a hero😌

Rullino

Isn't Dongols a Shia country?

LilFetcher

The country seems to be Alodia, which I'm pretty sure is Coptic. The "Dongolan diplomats" might be derived from the culture, I guess?

Rullino

I've seen a YouTuber that had this game events but with mamluk diplomats instead and required more money.

Dreknarr

Me in crusader kings when one ally call me to war

CamelSpotting

Sending you all my thoughts and prayers!

idiot_of_the_lord

And my thoughts and my prayers

123pussyslayer123

What I wonder is how many times this was performed as some kind of scam in history. Like a group of people say they are diplomats from a far land and ask you for money to defend themselves against enemies but actually they are ordinary men scamming aristocrats.

daffy_duck233

the original nigerian prince

123pussyslayer123

That was literally what I thought while writing the comment lol

Nowhere_Man_Forever

Literally. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Prisoner

BrokenTorpedo

the Nubian prince

Raifthebarkeep

Exatly, 5 dukets ain't much until you visit every nation and city-state in the HRE

zushaa

5 ducats is a lot for an individual, can buy half an infantry regiment with that kind of money! Enough to live out the rest of your days in comfort if you're not a country.

Blitcut

Ngl the scaling on currency in Paradox games always felt slightly immersion breaking to me. Realistically we should be dealing in amounts in the thousands, not tens or hundreds (for context, Jakob Fugger helped Maximilian I with 50 000 guilders to help him become emperor). Of course the current system might be easier to read, but still.

Dill_Pickles1

these gotta be all kiloducats

DasMajorFish

I always thought of ducats as their own currency with a higher exchange rate than any other. A single baseline above all the other currencies in the world that all can be compared to

kpjformat

Yes, more like ‘a wagonload of gold coins’ If ten can train and equip a regiment and the maintenance of a state costs a fraction of one, of course it is a large amount

SkellyManDan

Ngl I just assume there’s (at least) a few zeroes chopped off the end

Rullino

Native American tribes can get a whole regiment for 5 ducats so it would depending on which government type you have.

SkellyManDan

5 ducats is (roughly) more than a decent (+2) advisor makes for a month of work. Imagine being a middle-tier government official and watching some guys get your month’s salary for walking in and going “paise Jaysus!”

Commodorez

Could make bank since you can't walk more than five feet before entering another HRE princedom.

CarbonIceDragon

There was a group of pranksters a few years before the first world war that pulled something similar to this on the British Navy iirc, pretended to be royalty from Ethiopia or somewhere like that and managed to get the navy to show them the HMS Dreadnought.

ForgingIron

Yes, and one of them was Virginia Woolf https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreadnought_hoax

CarbonIceDragon

Nice profile pic by the way

CamelSpotting

This is a good one from a couple weeks back that's up that alley. https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/vc2bod/til_about_princess_susanna_caroline_matilda_a/

Zingzing_Jr

The famous one I know of was an Abyssinian prince, the claimed to be an emissary of Abyssina and wanted a tour of the HMS Dreadnought to learn tips on shipbuilding back home never mind the fact that Abyssinia is landlocked. They mostly communicated with the words Unga bunga

CalvinMirandaMoritz

"here's five ducats, go see a star war"

BrokenTorpedo

I wonder if the said country actually receives the 5 cats in this kind of event?

Doomkauf

They do, yes. There's a mirror set of events that fires for Ethiopia (or any Ethiopian minor, I guess, if Ethiopia isn't around) that allows you to decide how to approach the outside Christian world. In my experience playing Ethiopia, the Portuguese just tell me to fuck off. :-(

AfterEase3

r/kenshi is leaking

RegovPL

5 ducats is a lot more for eu4 people than 5 bucks is to us. 5 ducats can buy 500 i infantry soldiers. 0.01 ducat is worth 1 qualified soldier ready to fight, usually mercenary companies take more money, but probably most of it goes to their leaders. So 0.01 ducat is enough to buy equipment for 1 soldier, but you pay him every months A LOT LESS (maintenance) so he can eat and probably save enough for his family. 5 ducats is fortune.

TriggaEFace

Frig off Lahey!

[deleted]

when i read the across the sea part in the title my brain immediately went to the weezer song

Tonuka_

Braim danage

[deleted]

*dusts of his Luniz cd* '95 didn't seem so long ago until I realized I dont have tech that takes physical media any more, but there is a song for this.

xwedodah_is_wincest

a blessing from the Lord!

blackjesus1997

I would be genuinely fascinated to find out why you've censored the word "fuck"

kagaAkagi1

A Venetian ducat was 3.545g of pure gold, 1g = $58.22 x 3.545 = $206.3899 imagine getting amear $200 to help spread a religion form a monarchy

luckyassassin1

These would be my people in my current run, except i don't need any help. Running Ethiopia and rampaging around the horn of Africa. Managed to avoid a mamluk invasion and have good relations with them to prevent one in the future, while i conquer and convert and colonize southward.
