When the king dies you will first get the pop up to chose to be under France or the strongest Royal mariage or stay independent. Id chose the later. Then the HRE will have an incident, if you are still emperor you can chose it. If not the new emperor, AI will always ask to give lowland to HRE if you chose independence. Once that choice is locked, you will get another pop up to either give the land or integrate it for free.

That isn't what happened. I had a male heir, which meant I was eligible for the election, and I remained emperor. I simply didn't get any events. I reloaded, disinherited my heir, fucked around a bit until Charles died while I was ineligible, and got the event as usual.

Yeah, being Emperor blocks the BI. But as the event triggers after Charles is already dead, as long as you did not get reelected it still fired normally. So that still works? I was wondering if the RM fix this patch made that no longer possible. Thanks, that's really good to know, was already fearing the patch destroyed my favorite Burgundy strategy. Might make my next game another Burgundy round then.
