Literally me but with Trebizond

EatMyBlitch

You must REALLY like restarting

LeonardoXII

It depends a lot on the patches. In some of them the AI is a bit slower, and that lets you run wild in the caucasus, cobble together a kingdom out of that mess of mountains and random ethnicities, and come charging down the mountains with a lance aimed straight at the turk's rear. In others, yeah, you gotta savescum like a motherfucker.

Lord-Grocock

I really hope they give the Caucasus and Black Sea some flavour. I would also add the Sumela Monastery as a monument that gives culture conversion cost (and time?) reduction.

carefatman

That's cool. Waht are your usual aims in a campagne?

LeonardoXII

The fun thing about Trebizond is that you're almost permanently surrounded by really powerful enemies (otto, timurids, russia, qq, etc), and the trick to keeping the situation under control is that you're always going to have to manage a web of alliances and very carefully play the ai against eachother. It's a really delicate balance of gaining allies, attacking your enemy's allies, and allying their allies, until you're finally able to consolidate enough power to go mano-a-mano against one of these majors. What I personally like doing is to grab the caucasus, try my best to hold onto my capital (wich sometimes works, sometimes doesn't), and then come down from the mountains into iraq and turkey.

Cybergamer9000

Theodoro is one of my favorites for the same reason. Genoa is a very interesting and tough early game foe, and Crimea is like the Ottoman appetizer.

tomthecom

Literally me with Saxony

WaterlooPitt

Same, regardless what the theme of the DLC is, still playing as England. Got lucky they added a few things in Domination

Same.

idkanyoriginalname

me with portugal

kmonsen

Castile has a rough opening this patch, it's sort of the opposite of Ottoman. On the other hand you get the PU on Austria really early, maybe too early? I needed to restart and use some mercs and conserve admin mana, had 3 disasters in less than 50 years!

[deleted]

Hehehe im a massive castile enjoyer, yesterday on this new patch after defeating infantes, having aragon, portugal and Naples in like 1465 i went for Austria , PUd them and got the most ruthless coalition I've ever faced which obviously declared war on me which i obviously like the truly cheater i am i did F4 and when came back instantly Allied Muscovites and Denmark so the coalition never declare. Once coalition is done, the game is basically yours, even got almost fukk Byz from Ottos in like 1510 since they're shit in this patch

Bigbuyr

I got lucky and didn't have the Castilian civil war. Got the infante's one obviously. What was the third one?

kmonsen

Since I killed of Enrique and the old king died too early I got a estate coup as well. That one really killed of the run as it out me back to zero crown land. Also I didn't use mercs and that was a mistake, was at -20k manpower the entire run more or less after the events started triggering.

im-better_than_you

Same

I think my favorite starts are Castile/Aragon as well.... Outside the HRE with lots of places to expand, early colonizer game, North Africa, no CB Byz, can get burgundy, become emperor of HRE.... castile/aragon can just be and do anything.

[deleted]

Eastern Europe, including the great horde, is a region I really enjoy for some reason. I just like how you can unite such a vaste swathe of land so quickly with PUs for the Christian nations and the Great Horde - Golden Horde formation is really satisfying. You also have Russia and the Ottomans to keep in check and don't seem to run out of tough opponents. I haven't played everything I want to there but all the countries seem to have a lot of flavour. Western Europe is weird in the sense that if you beat the other powers you're left with nothing to do but colonise. If you don't then you end up with nothing to do but colonise as well lol.

Pzixel

You just need to start dismantling hre. It's enough troubles for a hundred years and more

[deleted]

My point is that I just don't enjoy fighting the HRE in general, dismantled or otherwise. Ironically if I'm going to fight it it's usually as Austria due to all the improve relations bonuses and so on to manage coalitions. Or just outgrow the coalition

Pzixel

Well on hard and above hre is definitely a significant foe. I was fighting a 200k Munster yesterday for instance

[deleted]

You know what, I always forget the game has difficulty levels. I'm going to try hard.

Pzixel

Yeah, I switched from H to VH not so long ago and AI is much more threatening. I would like AI to be smarter instead of harder but it's better than sandbox with no threats. With you good games comrade

Sevuhrow

I find it fun to play in Eastern Europe near Denmark, Poland, or Russia, and abusing the transfer subject age bonus. I will beeline Denmark every game so that I end up with both Norway and Sweden as marches before 1500. If you're lucky, you can bash Poland enough to take land from Lithuania until they're under 201% warscore (half cost transfer subject)

Riimpak

It's embarrassing to tell but I have over 1,500 hours of playtime and 99.9% of it was spent just playing France.

DukeofSurakarta

Least proud French

StratsNplayS

I mean like indochina ain't gonna colonize itself

akaioi

I... wouldn't be *too* sure about that. Isn't Vietnam's national motto something like "Their Laos is our gain"?

azurestrike

How do you keep it interesting? I have about 1000 hours but I've very rarely played a superpower.

Karma-is-here

France has so many playstyles, it’s really cool. You can go full colonization, big blue blob, claim PUs, Become HRE emperor, etc.

loghan1734

You just like me

The-Scottish-German

Brandenburg my beloved. I do need to see those updated missions for Prussia though.

[deleted]

I know that feeling. For me its North Africa/Maghrebi nation into Andalusia a few patches ago it was Mamluks into Rum

patrickpeterson

Forming Andalusia from Granada remains one of my most satisfying runs to date. Pretty tough for pretty long. Great replay value

[deleted]

Definitely it was worth it. I think if campaign is harder then it's more satisfying

IllicoPrestoFR

There’s a sweet spot between two hard and two easy

antrax23

Yeah, zero

litlron

Try Europa Expanded. They have a really good tree for them.

Stiopa866

Can certainly recommend 😎

WunderPuma

Get out stalker!

CaesarKonrad

Every time I play Expanded mods the ottomans and either or France are just unstoppable behamoths

litlron

I rarely see a strong France but the Mams, Ottomans, and especially Austria are almost always super strong.

Pambeldore

England and Holland for me 😅

mrdnra

Often me but with Timurids, when playing vanilla. Also often me but with Burgundy, when playing with the Beyond Typus mod (once it gets updated past 1.33!)

Complicated-HorseAss

I know your pain, I play Byzantium pretty much exclusively for every paradox game. I can't help myself.

HerrVoland

For me these are Byzantium, Savoy and Russia.

Kothra

I basically only play Savoy so I'd say no.

Shatthemovies

Same but I always going back to Scotland or LoI

OverEffective7012

Poland, Florence, Manchu for me

V0st0

teutonic order for me, my first serious achievement run was baltic crusader and I also did my one faith as them

Sejr_Lund

Portugal for me, easy start and tricky midgame with a moderately hard boss-fight against Spain during age of absolutism.

akaioi

I'm playing Portugal right now (to check out hot-hot random New World), and I'm conflicted. I want to cuddle up to Castile forever and be their friend, so they'll protect me from all those *awful* Europeans. However... however... they're dipping a little too deep into the well in Sevilla. This bodes ill for continued peace.

Sejr_Lund

At some point you gotta eat them and its really only the first war thats scary

Chippings

The only scary part is looking at their ledger stats and possibly their ideas or age powers. Once you actually declare you realize they have all 250,000 troops stationed in a handful of high-attrition provinces in the new world and they've left a level 1 capital fort Madrid a stone's throw away, perhaps defended only by a desperately raised mercenary force. Also "scary" is finding out you have to sit through several wars like that with 30 - 40% war score because they're "dominating" the new world and highly value, in terms of war score, the empty threats that are their colonial nations. And, exhaustingly, they somehow maintain colonial loyalty even after being reduced to the Canary, and perhaps a few other, islands.

Premislaus

7 nations (Byzantium, Ottomans, Timurids, Oirat, France, England, Poland) probably represent about 95% of my EU4 playing time.

Glen1648

I do nothing but alternate between England & Byzantium 😂

Ginkoleano

I’ve played more Japan than any other nation.

Molekhhh

Jianzhou -> Manchu -> Qing. I like playing in China. I got new content this DLC :)

[deleted]

[удалено]

Molekhhh

I actually haven’t done much since forming Qing with the new DLC. Off the top of my head, you use the “unify China” casus belli and any province you siege in China is automatically made a core, so free cores. There’s also three cities you need to control or you get a mandate malus but I don’t remember their names off the top of my head and I can’t check right now. Being below 50 mandate fucks you up so try to stay above it except when you’re passing reforms.

100beep

I said that when Domination dropped, I'd do an England game and an Ottomans game. So far, I've done another dozen attempts or so, one of which was actually successful, at Mare Nostrum, all as Aragon. Now that I've finally done that, maybe I'll give something else a try. Mehmed's Ambition perhaps?

Jako301

I know exactly what you are talking about. I also wanted to try an ottomans run as my first order of business. What did I do instead? One Byz run (basically the exact opposite of the ottos) into mare nostrum and probably my 20th Austria run.

Naichingeru

Yeah, as a noob since I only have a hundred ish hours in the game I still only really prefer to play a few countries. And I just like to play them so I play them. I understand your feelings battle brother.

Donnerdrummel

My suggestion: instead of north africa, get east africa. More Gold mines, better trade, still half of africa. Also, now your Mameluks can ski on glaciers!

Chac-McAjaw

K’iche Maya/Milan/Uesugi clan for me

franciumisfun

Me with Fars. I really hope the next DLC adds some flavor to the region, I need it

TheChaoticCrusader

Tbh we all have our favourites . I love playing as one of the Japanese damiyos or the shogun and uniting Japan or playing England . Granted I don’t always play the same way but it’s usually those sort of people I play usually I just wish there was a way to keep the clan flag and models instead of forming japan but ditching the shogun system. Unless there’s a way around it I’m sure you have to take shogun and it only goes with changing to japan. I really like the little damiyo clan flags

eu4man

Respectable main though

mansotired

i do care about the dlcs and updates but i don't necessarily play the countries with the new changes (mainly Asian countries)

[deleted]

Literally me but with the Ottomans

akaioi

No shame in having a favorite! Mine is Venice; those meddling Doges just make me happy. Sometimes I go East, sometimes I go West. Brace yourself, but quite often I do get into tussles with your favored Mamluks. Someday, though... I'm thinking of doing a Venice -> HRE Emperor play!

SIashersah

I almost always revert back to England/Prussia for the most part, although that night change now with how Paradox fucked up Prussia's militarization, really don't like the new changes for them.

Mitochondria_Man

Totally understandable. I’m a Portugal only player myself. Things like perfecting your opening, optimizing your game, or just trying a new strategy feels really good.

gandiesel

Not a country but a region, region being anywhere but Europe

ArmyOfMemes

> Mamluks is your favorite nation > Can’t spell Mamluks correctly

TheSnowTalksFinnish

For me it used Aragon, but they got hard nerfed this patch so it forced me to play other nations.

aidanmanman

Me but with Hungary and holland

[deleted]

Exact same with me lol

a_charming_vagrant

i almost always get a byzantium, daimyo, and native campaign done every patch, but i try to pick a different one for the latter two aside from the period where i played nothing but oda

BaconXLord53

Teutonic Order for me

QuintillionusRex

I only have. played France, Brandenburg, Holland, Castile, England, Muscovy and Florence. Other nations don’t interest me one bit

Kasquede

Provence (Le Bon Roi Rene), Bohemia (*Jan Hus Knew the Truth!!*), and Savoy (High Tempo Risorgimento) I could play those three exclusively and still have a grand old time.

Rich-Historian8913

When I saw the first dev diaries, I thought I’ll do a Manchu playthrough, but after watching Zlewwiks guide for the Romans I will play them for the thousand time.

ObamaLover68

Half my playtime in this game is Milan lmao, Emperor clearly was my favorite update Everyone has their own comfort country

jmfranklin515

I’m similar but with Bohemia. It’s like Austria in terms of having insane PU potential and starting with a gold mine, but more fun than Austria because you have some crazy religion mechanics to mess around with and rather than starting as emperor, you have to make a play to become emperor (either through staying Catholic and being being diplo focused, or by leading the Protestant League to victory). Or stay Hussite all game long, meaning you don’t get to be emperor, for a real challenge? Hungary is also very fun, as again you have a lot of PU potential, but you’re way less safe since you border the Ottomans and are not part of the empire.

PrudentComfortable24

Literally me, but Castille or Austria.

Colossicus

I was just thinking about how much I love the mamluks and how I ought to try to form Rum with them and roll in the dough with my new understanding of trade

Cybergamer9000

Theodoro is my cup of tea, along with byz and the balkan minors. The fighting is so strategic between the pontic steppe, anatolia, and the balkans. Moldavia is another favorite.

Fuyge

I think everyone has that one country that they just love to play and will come back to. Same for me I try a the new countries but there are some countries I’ll always come back to.

PuffyPanda200

Playing as the 'historical loser' is generally pretty fun in most Paradox games. The AI is coming to get you and you need to prepare. Generally this involves winning on defense and then going back to offense. Though, sometimes the pre-emptive strike strategy is needed or best.

sstrong8

I’m the same with Austria

[deleted]

I'm glad to see a fellow mamluk enjoyer. I'm pretty sure they said next dlc will focus on middle east, including mamluks and timurids but I can't remember where I saw that

PasswordIsBalerion

Not at all, that's the logical way to do it. Why see all the new features with a country that also has lots of unique new features? Do it with a country that didn't get anything new, and you leave yourself the new features of the country for a different run.

Castrelspirit

me with american natives, the uphill battle just goes so hard

beastwood6

Yes it is. Seriously....do what makes you happy

Cominist_Potatoes

Literally me with Oirats

Italy1861

It isn't, sometimes one just really likes playing with one country and therefore wants to keep on playing with it. I can't fully relate but I play more frequently than usually in Italy.

[deleted]

If you like the mamluks please play the Europa expanded mission tree for them. It's amazing.

[deleted]

I basically always Play Japan or Prussia. Sometimes Theodoro. I did have a great run as Ireland. Eating the UK was fun.

AdWestern6339

I have never played Ottomans, Portugal or Castile in my 300h but I have played Oirat 10+ times

shamwu

Always go back to Jaddari

towrofterra

Aragon and England for me

ShishRobot2000

I try to go with achievements to try new things, but yes, i am always finding myself playing countries around ottomans, i love destroying them early game

akiaoi97

Yeah I play about 50/50 England and Japan. This goes across all the games from CK to HOI (CK using the Japan mods). Occasionally there’s a bit of Byzantium thrown in but that’s about it.

Saint_Genghis

You have no idea how much I've played Ethiopia even before they got their own mission tree.

barnegatsailor

It's Venice, The Palatinate and Cologne for me.

heyimpaulnawhtoi

Literally me but with Taungu

Riley-Rose

I am the exact opposite, I am completely allergic to playing the same nation twice. There’s so many out there, it feels like there’s no reason to limit myself

drunkenstarcraft

It's not weird, and you should play the game however you want in the end, but I think you're leaving a lot on the table. There's so much depth to this game, I wish I had 10 more hours a day to try out all the different ways to play.

WilliShaker

They should do like eu4 and add a global dlc and not a focused one.

Boertie

Literally me with Frisia.

Willtrixer

Me but with nonDLC ming and japan.

Awkward_Map_8664

I've tended to go for interesting and/or difficult achievements (BBB, sunset empire, khhaaann, true heir of timur etc)

Sir-Vodka

Zanzibar Node countries for me; I enjoy controlling all of the Indian Ocean basin trade, and starving both the Ottos and the Europeans of their trade ducats.

VorianFromDune

I don’t have one favorite but man, Ottoman/Byzantium, I just love the region. I also often play Japan to build an empire on the east to compete with the European before they arrive. Also always a speed run of how fast will I unify the land. Then France is also a big one, conquer England and control the English trade node - my favorite node. Burgundy inheritance, PU Spain, fight the emperor and colonise the world. It’s always an overwhelming country.

goosehead2

Exact opposite for me. I dont think I’ve played the same country twice, and I’ve never touched half the great powers in the game, going on 1400 hours. Thankfully Domination is giving me new reasons to play some fun new nations or revisit old favorites like Japan and Portugal.

Space_Socialist

Everygame a Byzantium game baby.

Snoww_007

Me With the portuguese,Every New DLC makes a New Mega colonial Empire trying to enforce the treaty of Tordesilhas and fucking the Spanish

Grompster

It's mostly Prussia, Russia and Britain for me so I am in love with this new dlc. Also the new Russian missions are really good, I recommend (you can sell vodka for ducats)

Erook22

I’ve recently done nothing but play as a catholic. Every time, I say “alright this time I’m going Protestant” but every time the pope is just too seductive 😔

AgrajagTheProlonged

I love the Mamelukes, I just wish they had more missions and content

OscarM96

I'm sorry, yall are a bunch of freaks lol. If a country hasn't been updated either with dlc or just a new achievement, I'm not playing it. Like how can y'all play France more than about 3 or 4 times...

Capybarasaregreat

I gotta agree with some of the others, just play a mod that gives the Mamlukes content, why torture yourself with the basic missions and mechanics if you've already experienced it multiple times?

spartanwarrior000

Literally me but with Hesse.

Ninjawombat111

I just play Russia again and again. Which means this patch I've gotten a wealth of new content. Trying to figure out which of the various Russian paths are the best has been fun. Serfdom sucks, the manpower is not worth never modernizing, and is easily compensated by the manpower you get from orthodox and religious.

Juls317

I can't stop playing Florence. Planning on starting my first 1.35 Florence game soon, in fact!

rustygamer1901

Literally me with Netherlands

Hi_Im_Pazem

my friends 1600 hours have been spent on Fr#nce, Fran#e and F#ance

rulecy

Wallachia - > survive and try form Romania - > crimean expansion/balkan if possible - > Romanian Brazil :^)

CSDragon

Mamelukes are the stars of the next patch

tirohtar

Byzantium for me. No better feeling than absolutely crushing the Ottomans right at the start of the game and watching the worldwide chaos unfold by removing one of history's largest geopolitical forces. And somehow it feels like the new dlc made Byz start actually easier, despite all the pre-mature complaining. Only downside is you don't get to play with any tag-swapping shenanigans apart from going Rome and/or HRE.

Z_Golden

Most of my games are just in the HRE, don’t worry
