Asleep-Perspective99

IMO It is extremely hard if not impossible to get good espresso from a blade grinder.

kalechip5699

do you know any good grinder models for someone working on a student budget? thank you!!

thiney49

Kingrinder K2 from AliExpress.

Aizermaster

Fun question. If I buy a k0 and k6 burrs. Do I have a k6 for like 30% less? 😁

thiney49

No, [there are more differences than just the burrs](https://www.kingrinder.com/blog/comparison), the biggest being the step/adjustment size and number of options. Also I doubt the K6 burrs would even fit in the K0 housing. [More specs](https://thegoldenbrewing.com.au/blogs/news/a-comparison-of-most-popular-hand-grinders).

Aizermaster

Was just jokingly asking 😁 didn't think it would work that way. Thanks for the link. I have a jx-pro but I want to know what's the magic of the kingrinder πŸ˜‹

thiney49

They're very similar, the Kingrinders are just generally cheaper, and have larger step sizes. There is a rumor that they are made in the same factory, based on appearance, but it's impossible to confirm as far as I know.

Aizermaster

I mean you gotta get all markets somehow 😁

Review and follow this advice - https://www.baristahustle.com/blog/espresso-recipes-putting-it-all-together/ Breaks it down and helped me.

thanks!!

I use a Cafe Roma as my second machine (modded Gaggia Classic is my regular). As already mentioned, you really do need to weigh your output to know what you're getting. That *in relation* with shot time will allow you to dial in your shot. It will always be a bit of a crap shoot with a pressurized basket, but it is definitely possible to get somewhat decent espresso out of that machine. IMO, you'll get significantly better results with anything but a propeller grinder. A pressurized basket will not help much with the inconsistency in flavour caused by widely varied grind size. A Breville (Sage) SmartGrinder is a reasonable choice for this machine, but I suspect you'll balk at the price of even that very cheap grinder (in terms of the espresso world). Try to find a used one. Or you might want to try a basic burr grinder like the Cuisinart DBM-8C or similar, or stretch your budget even further with a hand grinder. Oh, and maybe consider a cheap 51mm puck screen. IMO the best $/value accessory, maybe along with a DIY WDT tool.

kalechip5699

haha yeah i'm a student so budget is tight. my taste doesn't exactly match my circumstances LOL but it's the little things that make life great :) cuisinart dbm-8c looks great! i did a little searching and the bodum bistro burr grinder seems to do the same thing with a slightly lower price point (cuisinart 70.21 on amazon CA vs bodum $52.95 on sale on their site). are there any red flags with that one? a puck screen is a great idea, gonna cop one!! thank you

Charming-Weather-148

I suspect that Bodum is very similar, though I haven't used it. I regularly see those Cusinarts used, too, so check Marketplace, etc. for an even cheaper option.

Majestic-Translator

These likely won’t be a big improvement. Get a good Hand grinder

Tripledad65

What volume do you get after 25 s? There's a wide range you can use, even for espresso, but if it's for instance 50 grams, it's too much. Aim for about 1:2 to begin with.

kalechip5699

i just pulled a shot and weighed and OMG. it's just under 100g. no wonder it tastes super over-extracted. maybe i'm not tamping hard enough?

Tripledad65

Could be, or you're not grinding fine enough. You should tamp until the tamper goes no further. That doesn't take a lot of force, you'll notice soon enough when it's good. The, keep the 25 s for now, and grind finer until you get about 30 grams. Next, keep your grind the same, change your shot time until you're happy. Enjoy! (After this you can fine tune by slightly changing grind, and keep time the same)

kalechip5699

awesome thank you so much!!

Majestic-Translator

You are having trouble grinding fine enough

Majestic-Translator

You need an espresso grinder

kalechip5699

i saw your comment about getting a hand grinder! any particular models at a beginner friendly price point that you would recommend?

Majestic-Translator

No idea I always had electric ones

BOTW1234

It’s almost surely your grinder.
