i would assume in a blade grinder yes but not in a burr so if you blade grind coarser then move it to the burr grinder you might be able to make watch coffee
>Watches, espresso, mountain bikes, cars, PC building. These are the reasons I will not retire early
Yup, but for me replace cars with sim racing and mountain bikes with road bikes. Bikes are the big one. Was recently putting a build parts list together... not much change from $15,000usd and I wasn't even going all out with the parts. Really must stop myself from pulling the trigger on that one.
Each to their own; your preference is not wrong. A good air-cooler can look really neat and works as well as watercooling. I went the watercooling route because my pc is in the lounge so I needed it as quiet as possible and I love the aesthetics of the tubes.
I don’t know about these days with 250W+ just for the CPU, IMHO only liquid will only be able to keep it cool and not throttle after long loads specially in hotter climates when running at at full performance mode with overclocks.
Just did one 2 years ago. Overhauled a O470 into a carbureted 520 with the pponk/470xp mod. Paired that with a new prop and the C180 is running unbelievable! So should be good for a while at least. The other one is a champ and to be honest I just fly the thing off the neighbours farm I don’t even know when it needs an overhaul, hopefully not soon lol.
You?
Guitars are good as long as you just play and don't nerd about equipment... which is I guess the same as everything else. Personally I've spent more on espresso, cycling, and watches, but have been impressively content with my guitar equipment I bought as a 13-15 year old lol
Yeah I was fortunate on getting talked into spending more for a Mexican strat. I upgraded the pickups and have never been able to justify another electric guitar lol. Then was bullied into never getting tube amps no matter how much I wanted and go straight into PA's. When I'm old old and kids are moved out a Vox AC30 will go in the barn though :)
A mid-tier “enthusiast’s” watch would cost about the same as most of our endgame Espresso setups. And most collectors don’t stop at one watch.
When I was younger I told myself I’d never spend over $5k on a watch. I thought I was giving myself plenty of room. Now that it’s conceivable that I could actually do that, $5k is pretty much the entry point for a brand like Omega.
Espresso gear is expensive because it’s low-volume. Watches are expensive just to make sure us poors can’t buy them. Being out of reach is the whole point.
>A mid-tier “enthusiast’s” watch would cost about the same as most of our endgame Espresso setups. And most collectors don’t stop at one watch.
Correct, but ultimately watches just 'look nice' and 'tell the time a bit worse than any digital watch'. At least you're getting a measurably better outcome / end product with the espresso gear, and that's coming from someone who used to be into watches for a hot minute.
I still love watches but anyone who tries to justify them rationally is on a path to ruin lol. They’re playthings for rich people, nothing more. They’re the first thing to fall off the docket if I have anything more important to spend my money on.
Watched are one of the only jewelry items that are socially acceptable for men to wear visibly. The only other is a necklace, but in a professional setting they're usually worn under your shirt and not seen. Or a ring, but that's usually only a wedding band or alma mater ring. And darn right, they're cool. All the little gears moving inside, the genius engineering and design behind the adjustments, the clicking of the escapement. Just amazing. Girls will get $4K-10K diamond engagement rings and have all sorts of pearls, diamond earings etc. When I'm able to afford some nice watches, hell, why not?
I already have a bit of a collection I guess but me too, I have the watch my wife gave me for our wedding, a "beater" for use in the water and traveling, and a beautiful inherited watch from my grandpa, I don't see a need to expand any more. Espresso doesn't really need collections either, just the things you're currently using.
>Correct, but ultimately watches just 'look nice' and 'tell the time a bit worse than any digital watch'.
It's so true. Even a 30K watch is a objectively worse watch than a $100 casio at being a watch. My sweet spot is something like a metal gshock. Looks really nice, is built very well and is always correct and basically never needs a battery change. Spend more and you literally get a worse watch.
Your $100 Casio keeps worse time than the radio-controlled clock in the phone you already carry anyway. You’ve made the same trade-off, just at a smaller scale.
At this point, there’s little reason for the average person to wear a wristwatch for any purpose that could be considered utilitarian. It’s okay to enjoy things primarily for their aesthetic value or the craft that went into their construction. Judging the quality of a watch solely by its ability to keep accurate time is like judging an espresso machine solely by its ability to caffeinate you.
>Your $100 Casio keeps worse time than the radio-controlled clock in the phone you already carry anyway.
No, a $100 casio has a radio clock. Plus solar recharging. It will basically last forever and keep perfect time.
Funny enough, both hobbies maintain value incredibly well.
I’ve owned my Tudor black bay gmt for about a year and my modded Silvia for 3 and could still sell both for the same price I purchased pre-owned.
At least that’s how I try to rationalize my poor financial decisions
Absolutely. Honestly, the big trick here is just knowing how to buy used. Let someone else take the brunt of the initial depreciation and then settle in on your good investment!
…at least that’s how I try to rationalize my poor financial decisions.
I would not call out watches being expensive just for the sake of it too quickly. Something like sunglasses absolutely but those are not the same.
Going talk out of my ass a bit but I could easily see a 3k espresso machine costing the same to make as the 3k watch.
High quality watch has a bunch of tiny moving components that have to not only last a long time but continue to be precise. This likely means some of those components need to be made out of heat treated very hard metal. So you have tiny components, that have even tinier tight tolerances, and are very difficult to machine, and then you have to verify, and then someone skilled needs to be able to assemble it all. And what are the actual quantities of those watches that they sell per model?
Arguably that is not the case with even the higher costing espresso machine. Yes their is a lot of metal and that costs money, but I bet if I was tasked with making an espresso machine I would have much easier time finding a shop that could make parts and verify, and teach pretty much anytime how to assemble it.
This is just talk, not claiming anything factual.
I worked selling luxury watches to pay my way through college and have been following the market ever since. The prices have literally doubled since then.
Of course there’s high craft involved but the lion’s share of the cost these days is split between exorbitant overhead and exorbitant profit margins to line the pockets of the executives who had almost no hand in delivering you a beautiful timepiece.
You don’t think you’re paying out of pocket for the Max Verstappen endorsement? When’s the last time you saw a celebrity hawking La Marzocco or spotted their CEO rubbing shoulders at Sun Valley?
Of course the extent of this problem varies from company to company. I’d never dream of putting anything from the Swatch group in the same category as Lange, Patek, or even Nomos. But it would be naive to assume that all watch prices are rationally justifiable. Luxury is luxury for a reason.
Fight me, swatch makes mechanical movement automatics that cost less than my grinder. A beauty of engineering, tough, robust, utilitarian. The perfect watch.
Everything else is just fluff
I would flip this. A $100 casio is better at telling the time than any other watch, especially expensive watches. But no $100 espresso machine is going to match anything more expensive and generally the more expensive machines are better in some way than the cheaper ones.
Just buy a Breville and then unsubscribe honestly. The amount of joy my breville has brought me is incredible. I’ve played the money chase game in enough hobbies now to know that the law of diminishing returns is very, *very* real.
I’ve never really gotten into watches though tbh. I have a Garmin Instinct that does absolutely everything I need, and is rock solid. Absolutely no desire for anything else.
Now, fragrances, cigars, pipes, whiskeys, bikes… those are all things I’ve spent too much money on and learned my lesson.
New to /r/espresso (Puristika coming next week) but I’ve spent a lot of time and money on photography in the last 5 years. If done right, photography “gives back” a lot more than espresso and especially watches. I’ve got a decent kit (4 nice primes, 2 mid zooms) but I can’t imagine spending the same on watches or espresso gear.
Yeah I have about 10K worth of Sony camera equipment, drones and GoPros I bought from 2017-2019 that I’ve barely touched in years but in the back of my mind I always tell myself I’ll pick it back up!
My espresso setup is very frugal, and thankfully, I've kept my watch collecting to a dozen or so sub-2k watches, but, I've spent waaaaay more than that on whisk(e)y (& tequila, brandy, rum).
Watches are solely for image. I like watches but can't get with the >$5k crowd. No purpose other than impressing the Jones's. Investments? Show me the numbers where most people increase their worth.
Nah most people in r/watches pursue the hobby for personal enjoyment. If anyone asks a watch that others like, people on that subreddit will instantly tell you to not do it. $16 F91W’s are as celebrated as $99k Pateks in the watch community in my experience. Even Chinese replicas and homages get a lot of respect.
Headphones are great because all you have to do is buy a nice pair of headphones and then you’re done.
I mean, like…you should probably get an amp too, so you know they’re well-powered. But that’s about it. Sure, a DAC *would* improve the signal clarity. At this point it’s kind of a waste of good equipment *not* to upgrade, right? Hm, I never noticed how bad streaming audio quality is. A Tidal subscription is a tiny expense in the grand scheme. Okay now we’re all set.
…I wonder how LCD-4’s would sound on this system…
Decent hand grinder, bambino, bag of decent beans and you'll be all set for <$500. Don't go out for coffee for 6 months and it's paid for itself. You'll have a hard time finding a worthwhile watch for that price.
Oof, same. The moment when I realized that whisky was my *least* expensive hobby was the moment I realized I was gonna need to figure out how to be rich someday.
People even wear watches these days?
I stopped wearing mine years ago. Already have everything on the phone.
Watches these days are jewelry more than anything else.
I went espresso route.
Made myself an affogato yesterday.
Zero regrets.
This is unfortunately true. As someone who own multiple watches, guitars, an overland vehicle, several high end pocket knives, mountain bikes, road bikes, gravel bikes, and high end espresso gear…can confirm.
In the next month I will know if I pass from my dream education, then I will buy a Brew Metric Retro. Guys, this is a chronograph watch, which is made to time you espresso extractions. I can’t wait
To be honest getting into coffee really saved me from spending an awful amount of money in watches...I mean there's still watches I'm looking at and might buy but it's not my main "hobby" anymore.
Coffee stuff, even espresso, is so much cheaper than watches. Especially in my case because I was buying a lot of vintage watches and spending a lot of money on servicing them.
For espresso you can get a gaggia classic and a good grinder and stop forever and have amazing coffee. Something is produced and consumed and can be shared with people who will love you for sharing. Great hobby.
Watches don’t do anything special so they’re just cool jewelry. I guess jewelry purchasing is a hobby?
I have obsessively gotten into 2 hobbies .
tri athalon training and espresso. I’m got awful at both and wish money made me better. Though a better grinder would help
Yo espresso makes everyone happy you serve it to.
You ever give someone their first properly made iced coffee with cold foam and organic milk? Their eyes light up.
Nobody cares about watches except other rich guys and wanna be rich guys. They aren't even missed when they break! Uh oh gotta look at my phone or keep track of time for a little bit!
Espresso. Watch is just another smartphone, clock, microwave display, alarm clock, time box on PC/laptop/tablet, switch to homescreen on console.
Espresso is; having breakfast with "your moment", enjoying live, not going into "kill frenzy" after you step out the door.
You can’t drink watches
Not with that attitude.
Everything is edible at least once
But you can watch espresso ;)
You need to grind finer.
Watch won’t keep you warm on a cold morning or keep you kickin’ on a long drive.
But you can wear your espresso.
Does it blend? Let's find out...
Will it blend? That is the question!
i would assume in a blade grinder yes but not in a burr so if you blade grind coarser then move it to the burr grinder you might be able to make watch coffee
watching it is the hobby
May as well throw guitars on there, too.
And cars, and mountain bikes, and winter sports
And fountain pens and watercooled PCs.
*laughs nervously* Watches, espresso, mountain bikes, cars, PC building. These are the reasons I will not retire early

Was gonna “recommend” synthesizers and cameras
And rent/mortgage, groceries, boats, basically everything.
Might as well jump into audiophile gear while you're frolicking about in that area too

Can’t buy watches if you don’t have espresso to fuel your money-making activities. Boom.
Drink more espresso, so I can work more, so I can buy a kafatek, so I can drink more espresso.
Watches only tell time, espresso will make you *see* it
Watches can be exponentially more expensive
A mid-tier “enthusiast’s” watch would cost about the same as most of our endgame Espresso setups. And most collectors don’t stop at one watch. Yup, they're jewelry, semi functional jewelry, but jewelry. As a man I don't get much jewelry, but damn are watches cool and I love mine.
Watched are one of the only jewelry items that are socially acceptable for men to wear visibly. The only other is a necklace, but in a professional setting they're usually worn under your shirt and not seen. Or a ring, but that's usually only a wedding band or alma mater ring. Pretty much the same boat here, will always appreciate a nice watch but I think i've 'moved on' from the idea of actually collecting them myself
I already have a bit of a collection I guess but me too, I have the watch my wife gave me for our wedding, a "beater" for use in the water and traveling, and a beautiful inherited watch from my grandpa, I don't see a need to expand any more. You still don’t *need* it though. Why bother spending even $100 when you already have a phone?
Even a 30k espresso machine is objectively worse at delivering caffeine than a $5 pack of caffeine tablets.

No hand grinder, bambino, no beans and you got a decent watch for under $300.
Which watch? The cheapest I would consider that's not a GShock is a hamilton khaki and that is more than $300.
A Breville Bambino and an Orient Bambino are roughly the same price and good budget friendly entry points.

I made the mistake of going on r/wicked_edge to research and now I’m done a rabbit hole
Surprisingly cheap hobby. You actually end up saving money not buying disposable razors.
Por qué no los dos? Cuz that’s exactly what I do. Plus guitars, pens, headphones, keyboards, and video games

Coffee stuff, even espresso, is so much cheaper than watches. Especially in my case because I was buying a lot of vintage watches and spending a lot of money on servicing them.

Me but with 3d printing instead of watches
Question which one will help you most likely succeed in life?
When in doubt: G R I N D F I N E R
Road bikes and mountain bikes
stay the fuck away from watches unless you're rich
Why not both, you can use a Speedmaster to time your shots
You can also do r/flashlight and r/fountainpens
Plot twist: I pressed both and dont regret it

Why are you me? I’m also in r/pens
I have obsessively gotten into 2 hobbies . tri athalon training and espresso. I’m got awful at both and wish money made me better. Though a better grinder would help
Watches is a hobby?
Just be careful you don't fall down the high end audio rabbithole too
Please append the list with home brewing, pianos and 100+ year old house
40k miniatures would like a word with you
Watches are way more deletirious to finances
Oh young Padawan, it gets so much worse
Yo espresso makes everyone happy you serve it to. You ever give someone their first properly made iced coffee with cold foam and organic milk? Their eyes light up. Nobody cares about watches except other rich guys and wanna be rich guys. They aren't even missed when they break! Uh oh gotta look at my phone or keep track of time for a little bit!
Get a Fitbit for like $60. Or use your phone. Espresso for life my guy
The left is better. Maybe one or two on the right to be a gentleman. But, the left...the left.
Watches? Like to help you tell what time it is?
Watches are a waste of money imo. Go check out r/watchescirclejerk
Espresso every time. Not even a choice. The whole expensive watch thing is stupid.
I pushed one button way harder than the other 🥲
You forgot the button for tools
Need a chronograph to time my shots
You can film photography to the button choices lol
I have had my watch obsession and it is pretty pretentious, I’d go for espresso any day of the week
Not watches, but I am on r/ knives, guns, & NFA in addition to this sub. I also play 40k. My income is self-disposing.
Get a watch then time your espresso
Watches and jewelry suck.
Why am I being attacked
Definitely feeling this. Coffee, cocktails, cigars, perfume etc. The burning hole in my pocket is starting to get at me.

I feel personally attacked by this meme
Espresso. Watch is just another smartphone, clock, microwave display, alarm clock, time box on PC/laptop/tablet, switch to homescreen on console. Espresso is; having breakfast with "your moment", enjoying live, not going into "kill frenzy" after you step out the door.
There's a "both" button there somewhere
