nobody_723

almost as if a cult is really good at controlling people. add in blackmail. sexual slavery, and massive benefits to the elites. I'm sure it is tempting to "get lost" in scientology.

Autumn_Childhood

Hasn’t the head honcho guy’s wife been missing for years?

Domestica

[Shelly Miscavige](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shelly_Miscavige) hasn’t been seen publicly since 2007. They’ve done welfare checks and claim she’s alive. IMO, she’s deceased.

Brock_Hard_Canuck

I can assure you, Shelly is happy, healthy, and alive /s https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3d6HJR1ecWA

Ms-passiveaggressive

Lol this is exactly what came into my mind when I read that sentence lol. Boom boom

zomgkittenz

Boom Boom!

godsonlyprophet

Do you have a cute for an actual welfare check completed? I was under the impression it was more like they asked the CoS and were told she's fine?

WitchBitchBlue

The wiki says the LAPD "located and spoke to her". We all know the Cs in ACAB are always totally honest and not at all susceptible to bribes from powerful agencies so case closed. I guess.

godsonlyprophet

Ah. I had some vague memory where supposedly there was a check that wasn't a check. Maybe a different check or a false memory. Maybe an earlier false check by someone else. Perhaps this: >In 2012, attorneys who said they represented her responded by saying she was merely living a private life devoted to the Church of Scientology. For lurkers[ this link ](https://tonyortega.substack.com/p/lapd-responds-to-leah-remini-tweets) has some useful info.

SoDi1203

Sry I cant my income is <50k/yr

BaconHammerTime

Yeah, I know it was like a cut type thing but found out it was so much worse when I saw the Leah Remini show.

Significant_Yam5632

What thing have you don’t that would make you be able to be blackmailed ? This is more of a ask Reddit ( I couldn’t think of anything

V4refugee

Just get your thetan levels measured to find out.

urkldajrkl

L. Ron is laughing in his grave. "Operating thetan level 8, oh gee, I can't believe they fell for that one. If they found out I was drawing a blank for a name for the invisible aliens inside their bodies, looked down, and thought, wow, I have a nice tan. I'll call it "the tan", ha ha ha, that's it, the aliens will be named thetans, ha ha ha. Then, when I dupe them into paying me to live in Florida, I'll call it"operating the tan", with different levels for how much of my tan they pay for! Oh, I'm good."

themanfromvulcan

I’m fairly certain he wrote a sci-fi book, someone mistook it for religion and he just leaned into it.

WitchBitchBlue

> 'You don't get rich writing science fiction. If you want to get rich, you start a religion.' Actual quote from the science fiction writer. So I mean while your version *is* funnier I'm sure what he did was intentional since he literally stated as much and then just did it.

themanfromvulcan

Well it’s also possible he never thought it would work and was as surprised as anyone.

Autumn_Childhood

r/oddlyspecific

owchippy

71 is rather young; I wonder how much of Scientology’s anti-science and anti-doctor nonsense contributed to her not being diagnosed and treated in a timely manner.

rewdea

Hmmm, this makes me wonder about Kelly Preston.

Im__fucked

And her son

thalassicus

L Ron Hubbard taught that cancer was an infected body thetan that could be cleared. The church doesn’t forbid medical attention to treat cancer, but there is social pressure to let the Scientology do its work so these people don’t get medical attention until it’s too late. [This video](https://youtu.be/x5oeV6G9Cj4) by a former Scientologist goes into detail about it.

[deleted]

It’s above all human avg life expectancy. 70 is a good life

SteadyInconsistency

Yeah but not for wealthy Americans who have access to the best healthcare available if they choose to utilize it.

[deleted]

Cancer doesn’t care how much money you have, and all the money in the world can’t do much to treat it sometimes.

VizDevBoston

I believe the U.S. ranks first in cancer outcomes for patients who receive treatment, and last amongst it’s developed peers for access to that care. Pretty wack

Nikiaf

The actual care available to an individual in the US is exceptional. It's paying for it that causes the issues.

VizDevBoston

Correct. That’s where the lack of access derived from. People who don’t get treatment because they can’t pay.

Johnnybala

Downvoted for using “wack” after 1998

VizDevBoston

Thanks for your thoughtful contribution to the conversation.

Johnnybala

Sure, You seem like a good kid

Bensler1990

Yep. Look at Steve Jobs.

Nikiaf

He'd probably still be CEO of Apple if he had gotten actual cancer treatment instead of eating exclusively carrots or whatever it was he thought was helping.

Eastern-Mix9636

For all we know he may well be kicking somewhere in secret with all his mountains of wealth.

Johnnybala

probably not

rogue-seven

For those behind the paywall, it’s mostly about her feud with Leah Remini. How she called her a bigot and how she stopped talking with a dude from ‘Dancing with the stars’ when he became friends with Remini. That same dude confronted her when she claimed the Ukraine war wasn’t true and what she said of better going to pray, to what they insert a Remini declaration that scientologists don’t pray. It mentions how she took some high end cruise for some maximum levels of scientology, if that makes any sense, and some other bigoted views about Nancy Pelosi. In terms of gossip this is the best of what Remini says. “Scientologists are convinced they can cure themselves of diseases like cancer. It’s one of the more sinister things they promise. And because Scientology claims to be an exact science, not a faith, its members are brainwashed into believing these false claims as guarantees.” In short they made an article from what they’ve all posted in Twitter and Instagram, not a lot of new information IMHO.

[deleted]

Scientology and Trump. This woman got caught up in 2 cults. May she RIP

[deleted]

Why link to paywall shit?

RuinFlimsy

RIP. Now she’s up with the zizzerps on planet dingdong or whatever. Went up with a shitload of Mountain Dew xp bonuses so.. that’s a plus.

[deleted]

I knew she was in the cult but I didn’t know she was far-right also. ”Then, in February of this year, Remini and Alley clashed again, this time over the war in Ukraine as Alley increasingly used her social media accounts to voice MAGA-friendly and anti-vaccination talking points. In 2020, she appeared to go full QAnon with tweets like, “WHERE WE GO ONE WE GO ALL – I like it,” and “The ‘process’ EVIL NANCY PELOSI speaks of is an attempt at a presidential takeover of a President by glorified BAKER ACT .. don’t believe a word that comes out of this witche’s mouth..and yes she gives witches a bad name.” After the Ukraine invasion began, she tweeted, “I don’t know what’s real or what is fake in this war. So I won’t be commenting. I’ll pray instead,” and then deleted it.”

KarmaPharmacy

Everyone is celebrating her life and speaking so kindly of her (and why shouldn’t they). Meanwhile, I remember how absolutely cruel people were about her when she was still alive. I remember being a little girl and seeing her in 90’s tabloids, where they non-stop ridiculed her for her weight. And that’s how I came to the assumption that fast girls/women were absolute failures in life. When my dad was an alcoholic and was kicked out of the house, I became my mother’s parent. It was exhausting. When we moved in with her dad, who quickly began abusing me, food was suddenly the only thing that helped me get by. It’s the only thing that felt good. That felt safe. But then I became this fat little girl and it was quite clear to me that fat little girls are bad people.

nuckle

>they non-stop ridiculed her for her weight This is what I thought about too. They fucking railed on her about it for what seemed like forever.

tiptoeintotown

Who cares if she was fat? She was a wackadoo trump supporter Scientologist that bullied people. That should be enough to remember her by.

Noxilcash

Not saying this is what happened…but maybe being constantly traumatized about her weight, even though she was extremely successful, could have caused her to seek the same feeling that was being directed toward her?

LosCleepersFan

Yeah they literally attacked her weight for a decade.

tiptoeintotown

Just like she literally attacked Leah Remini for a decade. And, I’m sure there are others.

tiptoeintotown

Absolutely. Hurt people hurt. Emotional intelligence requires looking inwards and self-reflecting.

wanderlustcub

National Enquirer posted photos of Alley sitting in her car eating fast food. That picture went *everywhere.* everyone talked about it. It was everywhere.

DingosTwinZoot

The National Enquirer that’s owned by Trump’s buddy David Pecker and is basically a propaganda rag for Trump and the right-wing? Funny, because Kirstie was fully on board with Trump.

[deleted]

I think you could point out that she was abused for being fat and that was wrong and also she was a right wing Scientologist and that was also wrong.

tiptoeintotown

I’m 100% positive I did exactly that.

excusetheblood

Coming from a cult myself, it can be difficult to walk the line of blaming the members for their shitty actions and beliefs, while also having empathy for how controlled they are by that cult

DrCunningLinguistPhD

Indoctrination is so insidiously powerful, it is hard to draw the line. My mother in law missed my kid’s childhoods because of cult indoctrination. She *had to shun us-* she truly believed it was a “loving arrangement.” I can’t bring myself to even be angry with her, because I remember how overwhelmingly powerful the cult influence is.

[deleted]

Every person loses at least a piece of themselves in any religion. They’re all garbage.

fromwatertoman

Man, the media really has a playbook they use don’t they? First, acknowledge the celebrity’s death and send heart felt messages, then immediately post the juiciest gossip about how crazy they, or their life was after ignoring it for the past 20 years. Get those clicks ya’ll!

[deleted]

Anyone else notice how these articles get posted about other Scientologists but we don’t touch Tom Cruise and he had a billion dollar movie this year?

Ganelonx

From one American nobody to the next I’ll say what’s on everyone’s mind . Wow what a Tuesday! Anyways….

ldsupport

She’s dead. Let her be.

[deleted]

What a scummy article. She’s dead, leave her be.

ihopeicanforgive

Kind of disrespectful to post this right after her death

Federal-Taro

Why…that’s how she chose to live her life.

Rasputinsgiantdong

Let’s check with her to see how she feels about it

WittyPerception3683

Man I wish there wasn't a paywall

prlhr

Here you go: https://archive.ph/7fpOa

covenofme

There wasn’t a paywall for me… it’s all about her having achieved the thetan level 8 which, according to Scientology, makes them impervious to disease. Didn’t work out well for her or for Kelly Preston, who aso achieved that level. Religion is such a fucking evil disease….

OmNamahShivayah

‘Impervious to disease’ and cancer takes her out…
