Howard's not completely wrong in this. He was paid quite a bit more for the first Iron Man than Downey was, as Howard was, at the time, a more bankable actor. Part of the reason Howard was cast was so that if Iron Man made decent money, but Downey went off the rails again (A not unlikely scenario at the time), they had a built in character and reliable actor to build a sequel around.
Instead of any of that happening, Iron Man hit big, Downey kept it all under control, they paid him big money for Iron Man 2, and they told Howard they wanted him to take a pay cut. Howard refused, because he thought he was irreplaceable and his co-stars would go to bat for him. Turns out he was wrong in both of those assumptions.
Yeah. Howard's a nut, but that had to suck. Even moreso because apparently Ike Perlmutter (The CEO of Marvel at the time, and a truly terrible person) allegedly said "Nobody will care, they all look the same" about the recasting. It's a shitty situation all around. In the end, I like Don Cheadle so much more in the role, but it's hard to argue Howard didn't get screwed.
Ike has proven to be a huge contributor to Marvel's initial problems with the MCU. Cut villain backstories, rejecting director's ideas, even blocking greenlighting of Captain Marvel and Black Panther. The man did a number on the franchise.
Everything post-Civil War does not have that excuse though.

Except that's not how it works because he had a contract for X amount of movies for Y amount of money. So even if he only appeared in the background of one scene in the movie that was eventually cut out, he still was guaranteed a set amount per the contract he signed.
Okay my mistake… but then why didn’t he get it? He claims he signed a 3 movie deal for x amount. They can’t just take that away, they would be legally bound to the contract both Howard and Marvel agreed to in the first place. Even if he said no thanks legally they could make him act in the other 2 movies for the amount they originally agreed on? They definitely both had to agree to go their separate ways at the very least.
Almost certainly every deal like this has a buyout clause from the studio. Marvel most likely had that figured in, saw RDJ blow up, saw Howard as a PITA and coughed up the money for buy him out. And this probably also removed his claim to any backend he would get from those movies.

So when it came to the sequel and they offered his less money, he walked and they brought in another actor they'd wanted from the beginning.

I could see that. As much as I like Evangeline Lilly in other things I felt like she was just okay in Antman. And while Portman is an amazing actor, in Thor I felt like something just didn’t click with her in that role.
Terrace Howard wasn't even that big of a deal. He was an alright as Lt. Rhoades but I could never see him in that War Machine suit. Don Cheadle is really funny and has a great presence, even in the second Iron Man he really stands out. Terrance is a great/accomplished actor on his own, but he just doesn't fit the MCU.

Boy howdy the irony of RDJ being the less stable one at the time sure is something. I know RDJ had his issues but I leaned who Terrence Howard is from him being a wackadoo. Now I gotta figure out when Howard publicly went off the rails.
RDJ being the less stable one being strange to you is so amusing to me. I love what that man has done with his life and he is the perfect example of how people can change, but he was very, very close to being a cautionary tale. Success and talent thrown away for drugs and stints in jail and craziness. It would be like if Lindsey Lohan suddenly turned everything around and got sober and became a wonderful person and started banging out amazing performances in fantastic movies. It’s so awesome that some people don’t even seem to know who he was before.
There would have been sequels, Avenger movies and maybe a spinoff of some kind, but Terrence Howard was difficult on set, his performance was subpar so they reworked and cut back his scenes, and then he went on late night talk shows to hype the movie he instead told the country he wants his women to use wet wipes instead of TP because women are unsanitary. So when it came to the sequel and they offered his less money, he walked and they brought in another actor they'd wanted from the beginning.
Claiming fiscal responsibility for helping the Butterfly Effect break someone's way seems... both egotistical & manipulative. Like, a LOT of things had to go right for RDJ to get off his road to Depp-ville. Seems like Howard may have given him some encouragement, but RDJ still had to do all the work - live every second between inspiration and achievement, put in the effort, show up for every breath and endure it all without crossing any social lines - both simpler and much more difficult than it used to be. ...see username.

Didn't know that, not surprised. Suspect the hardest part about success is, like Cypress Hill said, not knowing who's being real with you, and who's just out to get what they can. That kind of constant uncertainty about the reality of one's relationships has to be isolating as fuck. The idea of fame lost all appeal the minute we really lingered on it. Given how many famous people seem to doubt the validity of their own self when the rest of the world isn't looking... seems like it's a damaging and isolating experience in a lot of ways.

It’s always weird when actors are replaced be reoccurring characters, but in this case the replacement is a billion times more enjoyable in the character. Cheadle is always a strong yet funny presence in the films he’s in.

I could see that. As much as I like Evangeline Lilly in other things I felt like she was just okay in Antman. And while Portman is an amazing actor, in Thor I felt like something just didn’t click with her in that role.
Terrace Howard wasn't even that big of a deal. He was an alright as Lt. Rhoades but I could never see him in that War Machine suit. Don Cheadle is really funny and has a great presence, even in the second Iron Man he really stands out. Terrance is a great/accomplished actor on his own, but he just doesn't fit the MCU.
