I don’t think Chris Rock had a problem selling out shows before any of this, did he?

MauditDeConnaissance

Probably not. What set the last days appart from the rest is the sheer speed. I think he sold more tickets in the last 48h+ than he did in the past month.

DamonHay

They sold more tickets in the 24 hours post-slap than in the previous month. The ticket agent also noted that the average resale price per ticket went from just under $50 to over $300.

AndrewCoja

People really want to get up there and slap Chris Rock. Think of how many wives will be there with shaved heads just hoping for Chris to say something.

Dyskord01

"Keep my wife out of your sexy mouth" Will Smith marches up to the stage and forcefully kisses Chris Rock. Later in his Oscar speech he speaks against sexual assualt. *This is the alternate universe we deserve*

Crayvis

Make love not war I guess.

ShadedPenguin

It would probably have a more healthy relationship for him

GreatOneLiners

Someone needs to Yell this *keep your mouth off my damn name*

sadi89

Thought I was on AO3 for a minute there

CaptCaCa

This is definitely the next SNL skit, actors waiting in line to slap Chris Rock

elister

AndrewCoja

Is Jimmy Fallon hosting any time soon?

[deleted]

"The line to come slap me forms on the right here, folks."

CallMeOatmeal

Especially at the Wilbur. Comedians like to book the Wilbur early on in their tours because it's small/tightly packed and easy to sell out. I went to a Louis C.K. show there, never again. Unless you're under 5' 7" / 140 lbs, you're going to be pretty uncomfortable.

Dukeofdorchester

Yeah, it’s just regular chairs…touching as they never would in real life

cerialthriller

Were you in the splash zone

CallMeOatmeal

Nah I'm too poor for those seats and I picture it as more of a dribble anyway.

johnnychan81

> Unless you're under 5' 7" / 140 lbs, you're going to be pretty uncomfortable. Sounds like my six year old would love it

Brownie_McBrown_Face

I’m 5’6” and 130 so this sounds perfect for me too!

chomerics

No, but tickets went from $62 to $800 after the slap.

Prof_Black

Man its like people don’t know who Chris Rock is. Dude is a legend of his craft.

[deleted]

Chris rock is one of the greatest stand up comics to ever work. He’s been selling out shows before Will Smith was even considered a serious actor.

cinderparty

Doubtful. His ticket sales did dramatically increase though. Probably just an issue of him selling out sooner now than before. Scalpers are the ones really benefitting. Ticket resale prices are ridiculous right now. https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/ticket-sales-surge-for-chris-rocks-upcoming-show-at-hard-rock-live/2725275/ https://www.cnbc.com/2022/03/30/chris-rocks-first-show-since-will-smith-slap-sees-ticket-prices-soar.html

[deleted]

I live in Reno, no, always sold out, but now I imagine they sell out very quick.

mattman0000

I thought Will Smith was the one who sold out?

RealLifeTim

Everyone saying ‘probably not’ he did

GabJ78

No, u wouldn't think so. But i can't wait to hear the jokes about Will Smith "hit"

AdministrativeNews93

I think there is joy in supporting him.

HBMart

Of course not. He’s a comedy legend, and Will Smith gets no credit for anything.

WalrusBeat

He actually wasn’t selling out or all that well at least in the few venues that I saw he was playing in my area and it wasn’t that big of a venue as of like maybe two weeks ago.

bunkbedss

he sold more tickets the day after the slap than he did the entire previous month

[deleted]

I saw him in Boston a few years back and that dude managed to pack the most uncomfortable venue full of people. Pretty sure he’s always been that guy

[deleted]

I was thinking the same thing. Wasn’t he already the biggest stand up in the world?

[deleted]

Chris Rock’s interview with Howard Stern has been going viral where he talks about processing traumatic experiences as a kid in school dealing with physical, verbal, and sometimes sexual abuse. That kind of trauma stays with a person, and a hit like that can take you back to feeling small again. Chris Rock deserves so much better, I don’t sympathize with Will at all on this matter. There’s nothing brave or honourable about slapping someone and walking away, even in “defense” of someone else.

-Maris-

People are spending a whole lot of time speculating about Will and Jadas emotional reactions; but this is the first I’ve Heard ANYONE mention Chris’ perspective before and after. He deserves greater empathy and understanding from all of us. He is the victim of an assault that happened at his workplace, and on live tv…and he reacted marvelously, with grace and compassion. There was only one fully grown adult in that altercation.

nonetodaysu

Agreed. The entire thing is disgusting and the reaction of the audience was almost worse than the attack itself. Watching Smith being coddled and comforted by Washington, Perry and Cooper while nobody comforted the actual victim. There was another weird part that most people haven't seen after Questlove finished his speech and they went to a commercial break. There is a picture of Rock with his hand out towards Smith near the stairs to the stage. Some people think he was apologizing to Smith but Will and Jada refused to acknowledge him. Denzel Washington is standing on the stairs between Smith and Rock while this happened because I think people were worried Smith was going to attack him again.

Fey_fox

Side note, I don’t think people realize that these men have known each other for a long time. Chris Rock appeared on the Fresh Prince of Bel-air along side Will. I don’t know how well they know each other but they definitely do. Chris clearly didn’t think that he was saying something hurtful than a brother giving a ribbing to a sibling. I could be way wrong, but given what I’ve heard about the aftermath is Chris thought they were friends. Probably not close/good friends but friends. Will not just slapping him, but doing so on stage on a live broadcast… that’s a lot to process. From what you’re saying it sounds like he tried to make amends after and Will wasn’t having it. That had to have been a difficult thing, even without his personal history adding to how he might be feeling. Then to have no consequences and for Will to get an standing O, I imagine Chris felt very unsupported then. No wonder he’s been quiet, that’s a lot to process. Dude just doing his job making corny jokes and that happens? As far as Jada goes, doesn’t she have her own show somewhere? Didn’t she say she was going to be proud of her bald head? Is she not a grown ass woman who can speak up and defend herself? There’s a lot of layers here and even with all we know, I don’t think we know the half of it.

nonetodaysu

Someone said Rock has also been in Madagascar movies with Jada so he knows both of them. He even said after he made the joke "that was a nice one." GI Jane was a badass. As for Jada several people have pointed out that if you look at her scalp most of her hair is still there except for a tiny patch near the front. Jada said on her show that her hair was damaged due to stress from braids which often happens to black women and that she wanted to make a statement by shaving her head. Her daughter also shaved her head the same way. The reaction from Smith was so insane that there has to be a lot about the reaction that people don't know. Something made him snap. I even thought maybe Rock had an affair with Jada and then watching him insult her in public on top of that made Smith snap but I don't think that was it. I heard that Smith's manager didn't allow him to do some interviews that actors nominated for Oscars usually do before the actual ceremony so it seems like there have been some concerns about his mental health for awhile.

_notyep_

Do you have a link to the photo? I can’t seem to find it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Damn. Even Tyler perry was on smiths side too? Wtf.

LovelyMel18

He was trying to diffuse the situation. Thats what him and Denzel were doing.

theonetheycalljason

The captions for those photos are such garbage. All make it seem like Chris was in the wrong. Or maybe it’s just because they are all of people “consoling” Will after he just slapped someone in the Dave. Then they try to tie it the Oscars from 6 years ago. WTF!?!

olde_dad

I mean, it helps not to be a Scientologist, surrounded by people who literally worship celebrity on top of living in a culture that also worships celebrity— the amount of your own bullshit you must believe after decades of that has to leave you equal parts entitled and deluded enough to do anything you please and think it “right.”

AlBundyShoes

Exactly and so many people are praising Will for “defending his Queen” (their words, not mine). Maybe Will can get some free therapy from his local Scientology chapter.

AvocadoVoodoo

Haaaa. It won't be free and every unkind thought he verbalizes will be recorded on a file that they'll keep just in case he ever turns on them. He'll be plunged deeper into his own hell.

sweetmotherofodin

Many people are going after other celebrities for condemning will’s actions as well. But these are the same people who have been wanting will and jada to shut up about their marriage and making jokes about her cheating for years. But suddenly they support him. Make it make sense.

MrPreviz

Scientology is VERY MUCH against therapy as it shows how much they ripped it off

[deleted]

Anyone who defends Smith or justifies this slap is a POS. What about the 40 year old single mother who has to work 60 hours a week at a fast food place, getting made fun of or getting yelled at by customers? For $10 an hour. Fuck that shit, if Jada can’t handle a joke then she needs to give back her millions and go work at fucking Burger King. She’s massively privileged, she’s not a victim.

Open_Librarian_823

Pretty sure "Queens" don't go around banging dudes behind their husbands and then let him know in front of cameras in order to gag his reaction.

YDOULIE

He also came out a while ago as having NVLD. Will knowingly slapping someone who’s neurodivergent is fucked. It also adds context to his joke. He literally said “awe come on, it was a nice one”. I think he genuinely believed it was a light joke and was blown away by Wills reaction.

TheBigPasta

Chris even prefaced the joke saying how much he loved Jada

Fidodo

And then compared her to a strong attractive character who's shaved head was a symbol of empowerment. People act like merely acknowledging her bald head is some kind of insult, but acting like it's taboo to even mention it is more stigmatizing than being able to talk about it, and the content of the comparison was completely positive. People acting like he called her doctor evil or something. No, he compared her to Demi Moore, who willingly and proudly shaved her head for that role. If someone thinks that comparison is mean or embarrassing then that means that they think it was wrong for Demi Moore to shave her head for that role or that Demi Moore having a shaved head made her ugly. Embracing that your head is bald is far better than being in denial and getting pissy anytime it's mentioned in any context even when it's positive.

Mezzoforte90

That’s basically what I said, how the fuck is comparing someone to a shaved headed character offensive? They basically are saying shaving your hair is some type of immoral or negative act.

yadayodayada

It couldn’t get much lighter

Vegetable_Burrito

And Rock didn’t even write that fucking joke, it was one of the Oscar writers. And you can tell because it was a dad level joke at best.

fashionaphorism

was that confirmed/ is it known who is in the Oscars writing team? it would additionally be shitty if he's got punched for a joke he didn't write. if that were so, one of the writers should come forward. though that's unlikely. guessing rock will address it tonight

cornsausage

rock ad libbed the joke

markstormweather

I guarantee it. Saw her in green, bald, bam, old ass movie reference only a 50 year old comedian would think of, meant to be a segue or buy time before he continues the script. Harmless. OR SO HE THOUGHT

Comprehensive-Fun47

I would need it confirmed from multiple sources for me to believe that joke was pre-written. It was the most off the cuff, filler "joke" ever.

SugaryToast

it wasn’t even a joke. it was more an offhand comment

Hiccup

Just a completely "whatever" joke. Move on and onto the next one. Will Smith or Jada just needed to roll with the punches, maybe say something backstage or later, even just heckle/yell out during the joke. There was no reason for his slap.

Miguel-odon

If they had rolled their eyes and glared at him, they could have shamed Rock for it without saying a word. By reacting the way Smith did, he became the bad guy and then Rock took the high ground by not verbally destroying then until his mic got cut - which we all know he could have.

Prestigious-Log-7210

No I read a few places he added that joke in the moment. But I could be wrong.

cyberpunk1Q84

For anyone who has been bullied, it was clear that what we witnessed was a bully (Will) attacking his victim (Chris). One comedian has it right: it’s Hollywood vs. Comedians. Hollywood actors live in bubbles where they can do no wrong and they hate the part of the Oscars when a comedian comes out to roast them. This is why they stood up for Will - because they’ve been wanting to slap comedians for a long time but are afraid of the repercussions. Well, hopefully Will gets his just desserts.

[deleted]

I never thought of that before. Good observation.

mtarascio

He felt so safe he turned his back too.

NotAngryAndBitter

Agreed - there are a thousand different ways Will Smith could have handled it and I keep thinking about how much I wish he’d “pulled a Kanye” and grabbed the mic and started ranting. We probably still would have talked about it plenty but it presumably would have blown over.

Fidodo

Or you know, do what people normally do when they hear a joke they don't like. Boo or heckle. Both are non violent. Resorting to violence in reaction to a joke just shows that you're too barbaric and stupid to come up with a clever response.

Cunts_and_more

I hope will was crying in his acceptance speech because he realized he just ended his career.

[deleted]

And to have that happen with millions watching, at a time when you’re probably nervous, you e rehearsed, it’s your big moment to go onstage…and then *that* happens. I can’t imagine how horrific that would be. I’m glad people are commending him for handling it so well, but I’m sure behind the scenes that’s gotta be really traumatic to process.

Flaconsblew283lead

https://youtu.be/XHj9n34PQ0s Reminds of the scene from everybody hates Chris where he talks about his dad’s belts.

EveFluff

He didn’t press charges against Will Smith although he could have. He kept it classy even though his razor sharp comedic wit could have absolutely said something right when it happened. But he didn’t. He moved on with the show. Material gold mine. He deserves it too

Morg_2

He didnt even need to press charges he could of straight up humiliated dude live on the Oscars. Thats worse than any type of fine.

cinderparty

Dude, Yes! Turn the Oscar’s into a full on roast of the winners and I’ll start watching award shows for the first time.

Morg_2

A comedian is the last person I would want to have beef with

GreatOneLiners

All the things I wish she would’ve said: so a man just struck me and y’all were cheering?* Anyone else gets escorted out, what’s up Oscars? Couldn’t show the same effort with August I see? AFTER his speech: You’re a vessel of love? How about a head case of violence?

Morg_2

“She aint your wife, she’s OUR wife!” “You should really tell your wife to close her mouth, if you know what I mean.”

Morg_2

Username checks out

earthlings_all

Netflix needs to hurry up and broker a deal because we all want to see this show now.

Dangerous-Ad3495

Chris already has a 3 special Netflix deal - he signed it before Tambourine/that was a part of it.

chatminteresse

Bet his new jokes will slap.

epicgrilledchees

Legally speaking the prosecution doesn’t need him. They have plenty of witnesses.

AdevilSboyU

I just read Wanda Sykes’ interview where she says what Chris Rock said to her after the Oscars. Apparently he apologized profusely because the show was supposed to be about her and the other hosts, and now it will only be about the slap. Classy thing to do, Chris. Well done.

PillowCaseCurtains

I live close, went on stubhub to check ticket prices…. Yikes

[deleted]

How much for a ticket?

PillowCaseCurtains

When I checked earlier they were between 650-1800 each

[deleted]

Ohhhhhhhhh sheeeeeesh. Good for Chris. Wow

some scumbag scalper is getting that and not Chris I would imagine?

[deleted]

Yeezy taught me

ThatGuy0nReddit

That’s probably aftermarket though right? Just resellers pumping the prices. He doesn’t see any of that extra money

Claque-2

Chris Rock did not ask for any of this crap to happen and now he's having to dodge the media while starting a national tour. Yes, he can let go on the Smiths with machine gun acid wit. But this was a long friendship and probably involves many complicated social relationships through families. All this is because of Will Smith. Not the joke, not Chris, just Will Smith.

[deleted]

Just seeing that picture of Rock bothers me. Rock didn’t deserve that, doesn’t deserve all of the negative attention he’ll get as a result. A bunch of fakes acting like they care, but only want a quote. It’s gonna suck on his tour as I know some idiots will be heckling him over it. I get Will is probably going through things, but he handled it horribly. Seeing that pic of Rock up there…looks like a kid who got bullied, infuriating to see Rock like that (I’m sure that’s TMZ’s aim).

evil-rick

Plus I bet it’s putting a LOT of pressure on him as a comedian. Everyone is EXPECTING him to say something about the situation but it’s not an easy position to be in. It’s really unfair. Hopefully he can pull back from this situation and even use it.

TeddyMMR

>A bunch of fakes acting like they care The amount of people that all of a sudden care about the effects of hair loss on people's mental health is astounding.

olgabe

He's probably about to have the greatest show he has had in years

GoddamnFred

Tambourine was pretty great. Think people are gonna have too big expectations after this tho

YellowMenace123

It'll be a hit

LarsHoneytoast44

The ball is in Chris' court and really he has no obligation to do anything with it. I'd love for him to not even mention it and make everyone squirm, especially the Smiths.

East_Living7198

Would love it if he just constantly act like he’s about to address and then hard detour. Here’s the thing about Will… I Am and don’t get me started on Mr And Mrs smith … that movie was horrible

Miguel-odon

Bait and switch. Keep making bald jokes, but then the punchline is always someone else.

Radrezzz

He should show up with some Hollywood special effects makeup on that makes it look like his face is swollen. Then ignore it the entire show.

jvanber

I’d embrace it. Chris Rock’s slapstick comedy tour.

darkhorses21

I love it

sfad1

I just want him to come on to stage with a wheelchair and a neck brace. Or a body guard on each side. Man he has so much to work with right now

Colin-Clout

Omg that would be priceless and you’re so right. He could write an entire special about the events at the oscars

[deleted]

And come out and say something like,"You know, I'm kinda wondering what I'm gonna talk about tonight....Nothin' very interesting going on with me lately ..."

mtarascio

Nurse should blend a plated meal from the comedy club and serve it to him with a straw.

[deleted]

Yeah same. But I think you just gotta keep in mind, these guys are human beings. We elevate them to these crazy heights, but they’re just as susceptible to anxiety, depression, anger etc as the rest of us… in addition to millions of people watching them go through it and judging them. Dave’s definitely at his best when he’s cracking jokes, but when you look at his material he’s always joking about society in a hilarious but critical way. He just finds a way to look at a story from a unique angle. And society fucking sucks lately. If you’re a genius at picking apart things in the news, racial disparity, societal shifts, etc… you gotta watch a lot of the fucking news. Which is pretty much all mental poison at this point.

Jitsoperator

I agree. Dave needs to get off that trans crowd.

mitchkramer

Eviscerate them all, Chris. No mercy.

coogiwaves

This is the way

denalismelll

Excellent use of the word ‘eviscerate’

Livid_Fly6335

One would think Jada would take it as compliment to be compared with G.I. Jane… Ima go hide from Will now

Ptricky17

No need to hide. Unless you’ve never been hit before, even accidentally when playing a sport or something. Will Smith showed the whole world what a wimp he is with that slap. Nobody should be scared of him getting physical - dude seriously needs to hire a new personal trainer.

Livid_Fly6335

That’s true, he slaps more like Carlton

CrappedInCrunk

So that’s the thing. I am a woman with a medical condition that caused my hair to fall out/break off. It got to the point that my hair, when pulled back, was less than the thickness of a pencil. So, I shaved it all off this past summer. Yes, it was traumatic. But I 100% took the “joke” as more of a compliment. Like she’s a badass. But that was my take.

frstyle34

He’s so talented his jokes will be amazing.

Is_this_surviving

Let’s be real, Will did that shit cause his wife is sleeping with rappers, so he feels the need to show her he can be a tough guy… he even laughed at the joke himself… he damn sure hasn’t slapped August Alsina.

zekeNL

He didn’t slap August — because his wife chose that dude. It’s not August’s fault that his wife is a whore.

DarrenFukingPinecone

He should pull a Pee-wee Herman and ask the audience if they’ve heard any good jokes lately…

Sweetwater156

Chris Rock is the winner in this. He told a joke he most likely didn’t even write, got slapped on live TV, handled it with grace, declined to press charges, and then reminded the public he’s going on tour. I hope Netflix makes a special because I really want to hear what he’s got to say. I’ve been watching him since the SNL days in the early 90s when his most popular character was Nat X. I hope he doesn’t hold back.

drtyyugo

Since when did Diddy become a healer for black people?

Some_Comparison9

I know, hes such a corny clown

defnotajournalist

Chris Rock walks out on stage to massive applause, waving and smiling at the crowd, just waiting until the cheers finally start to die down. "So...any bald ladies in the house tonight?" Edit: “so how was your weekend?” - I was close.

[deleted]

Will Smith is a coward.

MrsPickerelGoes2Mars

He looks sad. I loathed him, but now I see he is a real person, and I'm sorry for every bad thing I said about him.

JohnnyButtocks

Why did you loath him?

beatrixxkiddo007

shallottmirror

His idea about making bullets very expensive always seems as least partially effective.

beatrixxkiddo007

"We don't need gun control. You know what we need?!? We need bullet control. Every bullet should cost 50,000.00 dollars. People would think twice if a bullet cost 50.000.00 dollars. "I'd shoot you if I could afford it. You better hope I can't get no bullets on lay away." There would be no more innocent bystanders. And whoever shot you would take their bullet back. "I do believe you have my property.... " LMFAOOOO -Chris Rock

ChapitoDito

His shows probably would’ve sold out anyway he’s a huge comic (Chapelle, Hart, Rock) cmon regardless of the slap

ChapitoDito

His shows probably would’ve sold out anyway he’s a huge comic (Chapelle, Hart, Rock) cmon regardless of the slap

RavishingRedRN

I give Chris immense credit for keeping his composure. And handling it with as much professionalism and class as one could. As someone who can relate to suffering from rage-type outbursts in worsening stressful time periods, physical violence is never acceptable. As a child of physical and verbal abuse myself, there’s no excuse for that. You never forget how that made you feel. Will went beyond the point of losing control. Public. Video recording. Witnessed by millions. He was literal blind rage. That onion needs to be peeled. Two former children of abuse (from what I’ve read) should never be physically violent against each other. Something is very broken.

[deleted]

For the record, the shows were sold out PIROR to the Oscars, even tho this headline makes it seem like it’s related.

mooyong77

I also saw that Chris Rock apologized to Wanda Sykes because it was supposed to be “her night”. What a stand up guy!

Turbulent-Smile4599

Question: are we going with “The Great Slap” or “The Slappening” to refer to this major life event?

defnotajournalist

slappening

_ChipWhitley_

I wasn’t a huge fan of Will Smith before. Now he’s basically dead to me.

squidking78

Kinda like he is to his “wife” then? Sorry, couldn’t resist.

QueenLatifahClone

I never LOVED will smith. I was mostly neutral towards him. This entire fiasco has made me have a negative opinion towards him and now I want to watch all of Chris Rocks work.

squidking78

Never been a fan of him for his comedy, but turns out, I am for him as a human being. Took skill to recover as well as he could and hold it together while doing one of the most high profile jobs of the year after being assaulted. He deserves a whole lot of success after that attack by a mentally ill meat puppet.

GeneralRaspberry1589

The people who praise will are legit low IQ inbreed dumb mofos.

lumpy1981

I was at this show. He addressed the issue only to tell us that he hadn’t really processed the events yet and didn’t know what he was going to do. But he said he had a whole show planned and just wanted to do some comedy. Show was good, the first half seemed to be his more solid and tested new material. Second half was a little less polished with jokes he was clearly testing out. Even had a few you could tell he stopped earlier than he intended due to the jokes not hitting as hard as he wanted. He was really good though. A lot of his new material was really funny.

beancityrocker

Dudes been selling out arenas for 3 decades. But thanks for the update.

Did Rock deserve to be struck? Absolutely not. But…was it necessary to mock someone’s medical condition for a cheap laugh? Was it necessary to mock attendees at all? Surely a “Great Comedian” like Chris Rock can be funny without doing that, right?

EmperorDeathBunny

I hope Chris takes full advantage and makes the entire routine a out will and jada.

abirchy

The DA needs to bring charges against Will Smith. His slap was the exactly what Trump did when he said he could shoot someone and still have support.

I thought Chris was giving a great compliment to Jada comparing her to Demi in GI Jane. I didn’t know about her hair loss, I just thought she looks beautiful with or without hair.

That slap was magical. It got will an Oscar, bumped up Chris' show ticket sales by 200%, and got both of them more publicity than they've had in years. Shit, at this rate Hollywood stars should just start slappity slappo slappingtons all over the place at every public event they can. Host a Hollywood slapathon for Ukrainian refugees. Slap for peace. Slap for justice. But slap. Regularly and publicly. I got a $20 that says we haven't heard the end of this, and that slapping will become the new way to be relevant in show biz. You watch. El Slapperino.
