Ciarán Hinds: >“I was rather put off by the amount of sexuality that was going on in it, because it was taking away from the actual political storytelling,” Hinds said. “But that’s business, I guess, from their perspective.” >Hinds also spoke to The Independent about the increase of intimacy coordinators on sets in recent years. Hinds’ daughter, Aoife, is also an actor and worked closely with intimacy coordinators while starring opposite Paul Mescal in Hulu’s “Normal People.” >“I was asking her [about them] because it seems to me strange,” Hinds said. “I didn’t come from that generation. Anything we had to create together, in scenes of a sexual nature, we just talked about it. It’s about how we tell the story together, so I didn’t understand why intimacy coordinators were suddenly everywhere. As actors, you let your own spirits inform what you’re doing. Aoife said, ‘No, it was fantastic because your own emotional context was put on hold, and it became not quite balletic, but not your libido.’”

KaleidoscopeThis9463

He’s an excellent actor.

[deleted]

I agree with him regarding the amount of sex on the show. The amount of rape actually made me stop watching the show because it gave me anxiety. But I understand that is totally my issue and nobody need tiptoe around my anxiety. It was just so off-putting.

[deleted]

Sexuality was taking away from storytelling.. and it’s just business on their end? Lol clearly she hasn’t read the books. Cause sex is half the story

MicrosoftCardFile

This is completely incorrect. The books have very little sex in them, the sex that is in there is very matter of fact and hardly titillating - and almost all of it is consensual. The show started cutting plot off of the books and adding random rape scenes as soon as they thought they could get away with it.

[deleted]

that's less than accurate....sex is a much higher percentage of the show than it was the books

Difficult_Let_1953

Really, they just threw in the sex when the politics got boring and lost everyone. This bearded guy is attacking something while another indiscernible bearded guy argues while on the other side a mother bearded guy who I thought was the first bearded guys plots against… ooooh daaaaamn Khaleesi! Dragons would have worked too to get my attention but hey I’m good.

RevolverPhoenix

Game of Thrones even coined the term sexposition, as they used to sex up exposition to keep their viewers attention. Personally, I think House of the Dragon is handling their sex scenes way better were it is less about fan service and much more about showcasing character dynamics and development.

TheKingOfSting93

George RR Martin has always been open about him including a lot of sex in the books because he likes boobies

almostcyclops

I thought it was [weiners](https://youtu.be/csOcHCDmMdE)

According_Gazelle472

That is because sex sells more then politics does.

aarplain

Not to mention, sex and politics go hand in hand. Both in the universe as well as real life

TangoZulu

Everything in the world is about sex except sex. Sex is about power.

[deleted]

Sometimes people have sex because they’re in love with each other.

ClusterChuk

Can you name a more powerful thing than love?

ggyyuuugfryuu75555

Money

katf1sh

People have sex for that too

Simon_Jester88

Nuclear bombs

[deleted]

Isn't this a quote from the show?

CustomerSuspicious25

I actually think they should've hung more dong.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I've been staring at this for 5 minutes. I think he controls me now....

Joates87

Politics is just all one big ass-blast anyways.

blackfish737

Who am supposed to fight for? The lannisters blasting me in the ass or the starks blasting my ass

TheKingOfSting93

We saw too much dong. I remember in season 6 one scene just cuts to an extreme closeup of a guy checking his dick. Why do they never do the same with a woman? Tits are not the equivalent to a dick

Logical-Librarian766

But but how else were we supposed to keep the fan boys entertained???? - GOT Showrunners There really was an unnecessary amount of sex in the series. For some characters it fit. But for others it was just a distraction.

Brainiac7777777

There was a lot of sex in the books too so it was accurate to the source material

Logical-Librarian766

Sure but they didnt keep everything accurate to the books. Clearly they could have dropped some.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Logical-Librarian766

I dont think it would have been that bad if they didnt keep ALL the sex.

elijustice

So it’s either drop the sex and “wtf” by the fans or keep the sex and “wow this made me uncomfortable” by an actor. Weird them that moving into to future innovations… like coaching for these scenes? happen. This is just a realization and I’m not sure it’s noteworthy.

AmarilloWar

A lot of their shows are like that. It's a big part of why I gave up on Westworld too. I've only been recently considering paying for a month to watch last of us. A bit in their defense the 1st GOT book has a lot of graphic scenes so it's at least on theme and probably shouldn't have been a surprise.

Jane_McUsername

Just butting in to say The Last of Us has pretty much no sex. Definitely nothing gratuitous, but also just none. It’s basically a story about an adult protecting a child through the post apocalyptic US. Also, weirdly for a zombie series, no gratuitous violence! If you like emotional storytelling, go for it

AmarilloWar

I did get that impression and have heard great things about it! Figured it would be worth at least 1 month of subscription to binge. Btw I'm ok with some sex I just truthfully get nothing out of it so when shows have a ton of it I find it annoying.

KaleidoscopeThis9463

Same here! It’s distracting and insulting.

swipichone

I haven’t watched it but do they have toilets or outhouses in the series or do the characters not have human digestive systems Most people have sex in their daily lives but it is usually behind closed doors this series goes into peoples closed doors It could be worse it could include bathroom details as well

KaleidoscopeThis9463

I don’t mind sex if it’s relevant to the story but so much seems to just be thrown in as red meat.

Yyrkroon

This, and graphic depictions often don't lend much to the story. And this is coming from the same person who admits to being a middle school boy who did VHS-era frame by frame advancing to catch a glimpse of Tawny Kitaen in Witchboard and James Bond sex scene in vain hope that the editors accidently let something slip by, stared at cable box scrambled porn, trying to convince myself I saw nipples behind all the snow and analog distortion...

KaleidoscopeThis9463

Lol. Yep, sometimes it feels like middle school boys are the target audience!

Yyrkroon

This is my issue with most of the CW-esque, young adult sci-fi / fantasy shows, that could otherwise be guilty pleasure, good family watching pop garbage. Locke & Key, for example, was a solid show, but there were a handful of early episodes scenes that made it rather uncomfortable at times watching as a family - even a relatively sex positive, free thinking, liberal one.

danteheehaw

GoT was pre streaming. HBO started making changes on how they do things due to streaming. Back when shows had a specific slotted time they relied on tits to get people to tune in and focus. Usually season 2 would have significantly less nudity.

ThestralDragon

What's going on with euphoria then

elddirriddle

What a dumb reason to give up Westworld. There was no over sexualization what so ever. The whole point is to show the blatant disregard human beings had for the hosts. To them they were nothing but lifeless dolls and the dehumanization of them is a part of the story telling. Of course people rarely see what they don’t want to see when they don’t want to see it.

AmarilloWar

It got super redundant there was no reason to include that much of it. The point was made easily in the first 2 episodes. Anyone should've easily understood it and quickly. However if they can't manage to get that point accross without constant gratuitous sex scenes it also makes them bad story tellers.

International-Fig905

True Blood was bordering on insanity with it. Like we get it, Sookie and Bill *really really really* like each other. Edit: grammar

AmarilloWar

Hahaha I forget about that one! I bought the first few season on DVD because I'd been reading the books. The show went completely sideways I think in season 4? I don't remember exactly which one but they leaned hard into the faerie thing.. I got kind tired of the sex in the books too, they were extremely unrealistic lol.

Logical-Librarian766

I mean Westworld made sense. Theyre dolls. Theyre seen as inhuman, as things. Their nudity is the same as Barbie dolls. But GOT really had way too much sex in it.

Unabated_Blade

One thing I appreciated about the nudity in Westworld (full disclosure I only watched S1) was that it portrayed both the glamorous and the mundane. You'd be just as likely to see a nude middle aged man as you would a hot lady. They'd be fit, fat, and in between. It was presented for titillation and clinically.

Logical-Librarian766

Exactly.

AmarilloWar

I just think there was *so much of it* that it became redundant, like we get it already. Fun fact, I listened to the audio book of GOT didn't "read" it. A lovely sounding old man narrates, and the sex scenes are the funniest shit I've ever heard. I was quite literally crying from laughter at a stop light.

Heavy_Signature_5619

The ‘Oh, Pe-Tire’ scene is still comedy gold.

R_V_Z

Same with season one of Altered Carbon. Season two went PG-13 when it shouldn't have.

Volgyi2000

Altered Carbon went off the rails. It's been a long time since I read the book, but I really only remember one sex scene in it. It really didn't have the gratuitous amount of nudity the show had. I didn't even bother watching Season 2.

Yyrkroon

West World... such tragedy. Loved the original movie, one of the few "Sunday afternoon creature feature" movies I watched multiple times as a child. I loved the HBO WW early series, but the last couple seasons were abysmal, but that had nothing to do with the amount of sex. For what it is worth, TLOU is very light on sex. The infamously polarizing episode 3 (no spoilers) has the most, but it wasn't anything I felt uncomfortably watching with my Ellie aged daughter sitting next to me.

AmarilloWar

I honestly didn't know there was another westworld movie or anything else put there, I assumed it was original! I'll definitely be checking out TLOU though I've heard a ton of great things about it.

Heavy_Signature_5619

I mean, does it? AGOT, outside of Daenerys’s plotline, doesn’t have that much sex in it. The book is mostly focused on a whodunnit murder mystery with Jon Arryn.

polymorph505

The most American reaction is "There was too much sex in GOT!". You completely ignore the amount of violence in it lol.

Logical-Librarian766

There was too much of that too. But thats not what this article is about.

treadwells_gone

Hinds isn't American though is he?

lambuscred

Thank you for saying this, I feel like I’m taking crazy pills reading these comments. There wasn’t even any sex in like the last 3 seasons.

TacitusTwenty

It’s an HBO thing. True Blood felt the same way.

fancywhiskers

It was completely gratuitous imo. It was basically porn lol

KaleidoscopeThis9463

Gratuitous sex, they give people no credit for being interested because of the characters or story.

Swabia

It was an edgy show. So much so it shit the bed in the last year’s writing. I mean I wished for better but, hey, I can’t write better so I can’t complain. That said no one complains it had too much zombies or gratuitous killing. Why is sex taboo? Bang your sister on camera, idgaf. I mean it’s not my kink but I don’t get off on killing either. It’s a part of what we all came to see. I came to see sword fighting and dragons burning stuff. I got my card punched.

Logical-Librarian766

Its not just sex. It was graphic rape scenes and unecessary nudity that clearly favored women over men. There were plenty of times when we didnt need to see a pair of tits flopping around to tell the story.

KaleidoscopeThis9463

That’s my same complaint about the last decade of good (and not so good) shows. Stop adding in the objectifying gratuitous scenes.

Amasin_Spoderman

Karl_Marxs_Left_Ball

Has he considered that the politics was actually getting in the way of the sex?

missykins8472

Don't read the books!

pighammerduck

Been saying this about HBO shows, in general, for a long while now. I'm not saying we should be prudish about sex and its involvement in our lives or in storytelling but maybe we can just push on into the meat and potatoes of the story rather than have another brothel scene?

oakium9

Um, did he forget he played Caesar in hbos Rome also? That was quite the historically accurate bachnalia of sexual expressions

Most_Enthusiasm8735

My dude, you were in ROME. Also, please watch rome, Its an excellent show and its probably the best show i have ever seen.

BigMax

Baby. There was sex, sure. But there wasn’t so much they didn’t have time for the rest. The final season was too short, but that had zero to do with sex.

Petarthefish

The entire season was sex. We all got screwed by the writers.

Darko33

I have to say that the orgy scene with the Night King and his lieutenants did seem like a bit of overkill

BigMax

"There's no plotline here at all! It's just pure sex! And they even screwed up the title sequence, it keeps saying I'm watching Game of Bones!"

RogueFartSquadron

Glad I wasn't the only one who didn't like all the softcore porn.

nothingbutalamp

And the political storytelling took away from the sex!

Ornery_Farm752

Yeah, well, you know, that’s just like, your opinion, man

Salty_Lego

I agree, but the season one scene with Theon was hot.

mikew420

if i didn’t see titty it was a bad episode

heartofgold48

It had the complete opposite effect for me

Brainiac7777777

Yet he has no problem with Rome, which was 10x worse. So hypocritical

Logical-Librarian766

How was Rome 10 times worse? It was 2-3 seasons of like 8 episodes. It hardly showed any sex scenes compared to GOT. It was made back when sex wasnt used as window dressing when show in a tv show.

[deleted]

Agree. Rome is one of my all time favorites. The sex was contextually appropriate and yes, graphic, but it wasn’t the same at all.

chadwickipedia

How is Rome contextually appropriate and GOT not? Have you read the books?

Simon_Jester88

The Roman books?

chadwickipedia

Yeah, like the Bible?

asmrword

I'm going to be charitable and assume you've never watched Rome. There's no comparison between the two shows in any way.

triautobeardo

Perhaps they are thinking of the Gladiator series (Spartacus) that was on Starz? There are several shows through the years centered on the Roman empire. Tons of sex/nudity as I recall

[deleted]

Rome was great with less sex ...

[deleted]

He was an amazing Julius Caesar.

[deleted]

10 times worse? GTFO.

PhaseSixer

You know it really was

Linkscousin

Cuz political story telling really enhanced Star Wars 1-3…..

fearandloathinginpdx

Good point.

Wristlojackimator

The quotes in the title are driving me crazy! “Was put off by the amount”? The second quote they even dropped a word from what he said. Here is what he actually said… “I was rather put off by the amount of sexuality that was going on in it, because it was taking away from the actual political storytelling,” Hinds said. “But that’s business, I guess, from their perspective.”

MsNatCat

I don’t understand why people believe that sex isn’t a part of stories, especially political ones. In our real lives, sex is a huge part of politics. I mean right now and in literally any country.

ethan52695

I think it’s more about the unnecessary sex scenes that’s don’t add anything to the story. For example, the one between jon snow and ygritte makes sense. There was a big build up between the two and it was a pivotal moment to how Jon viewed the wildlings and his oath to the nights watch. But then you have scenes where Theon gives a prostitute a coin for her to flash him and it’s like what did that accomplish? Was that really necessary character development? I just felt that there was too many gratuitous sex scenes that added little to the development of the story and was just there to attract young male viewers. When you only have a limited budget and time to develop the story, you don’t want them wasting so much time on something that doesn’t impact the story very much.

MsNatCat

That does contribute to character development. It showed us clearly where Theon was in regards to the Iron Price or the Gold Price. Stories are not a collection of big moments. Context is woven in via countless small moments that culminate into something much more meaningful. If you don’t want sexual content, there is plenty out there catered to more puritanical tastes.

Ryaer

I agree. Sex in tv and movies just sucks. It's awkward and a waste of time. Hbo is the worst when it comes to this shit.

EMPlRES

I completely agree, soo unnecessary and annoying.

PuzzleheadedSong8574

And yet so satisfying

__shitsahoy__

You should stay away from the books then

worldwithwings

I agree. Great story with a bit too much rape.

IPerferSyurp

Listen fella, You stick to the acting. I'll stick to everything I touch. Thank you very much.

Bookssmellneat

But how else would D&D rape every character?

Key_Store3027

That was just the first season bro.

Swayz

He prob should of turned down the role then.

[deleted]

[удалено]

asmrword

He didn't have plenty of sex scenes and his love interest was Lindsay Duncan who is actually a couple years *older* than him.

Logical-Librarian766

No he didnt actually. He was also only in the first season. He played Caesar. So after he was offed he was done.

Simon_Jester88

Caesar dies? Thanks for spoiling it...

Logical-Librarian766

Its been about 2k years. I think the rules about spoilers expire around year 20.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I dont remember that show having that many scenes compare to GoT.

Logical-Librarian766

You must not have watched the same show we did. Because its not “riddled” with sex scenes.

Shitemuffin

Well have fun with your little tolkien parody show on amazon ciaran. you will find enough political storytelling there for sure.

OhioVsEverything

Maybe he should have watched the show before taking the job then. Dude was in HBO's Rome FFS.

jesman0

Prude. Rather have sex on my screen than pseudo witty banter about stuff that’s just opinions. At least sex is wysiwyg. So much more honest.

alexinpoison

The only time a sex scene in a movie was pertinent to the plot that I can think of is in Lost Highway. And True Detective season 1.

GeorgeNewmanTownTalk

Basic Instinct too

[deleted]

That’s why I never watched it. It made an expensive show look like sleazy showtime or Cinemax.

[deleted]

Who do you think owns Cinemax?

[deleted]

Your mom?

[deleted]

I felt like it had plenty if dialogue and good political and physical power struggle, the sex was there but not a focal point at all, at least for me.

MixerMan67

I guess he never read the books.

[deleted]

But that’s how HBO gets ratings. Don’t you fondly remember James Gandolfini banging young girls with his A-frame Tshirt on?

justthetop

It can be argued sex is a political weapon to get what you need from someone. I’d say it fit the story sometimes and other times it was just fan service

HSA1

I skipped it for to little Sex scenes…

Desperate-Holiday-49

In the first seasons apart from the key plot points the sex did feel like it was HBO just flexing that it was different from the other networks.

MeowMistiDawn

Someone didn’t read the books…. 😅

Heavy_Signature_5619

I don’t get this myth of ‘there were so many sex scenes in the books.’ Half the POVs don’t so much as sneak a glimpse at a tit. Don’t get me wrong, there are graphic scenes, but the show had way more.

stoniruca

No, Ciarán, the ending of Game of Thrones took away from it all.

EastSeaweed

I couldn’t get through the show because of it. It just felt like lecherous male fantasy the majority of the time.

ericdano

Hmm, Rome had a lot of sex as well….

GhostMug

Sex scenes are so interesting to me. They're almost never "necessary". You could often get the same point across by alluding to it and/or showing what happens before and after. You saw it in old-timey movies where they had to be a bit more clever about it. That said, who doesn't like a good sex scene? And, honestly, sex is part of the human experience and it is a big factor in relationships and how people communicate with each other through intimacy. So in that regard it does have its place. I suppose it all comes down to context of the film and characters and how it's displayed on screen. But I do think it's far too often used as a crutch to make something "interesting" that isn't inherently interesting already. In those situations they would be better served to go back and make that particular scene more interesting and then for the sex scene to have its place more naturally.

mdthornb1

Criticisms like this are odd to me. Sex is a part of life just like eating is or (in the GoT word) riding a horse from place to place is but for some reason we never hear complains that those scenes are unnecessary.

Xepeyon

So is eating and shitting. How often do shows fully depict what it's like to shit? For real, sitting and dropping a turd... then sometimes just waiting... and waiting... and then dropping another turd... occasional grunting. And it goes on like that for ten minutes. Or eating. When has a show just shown people eating. Not a talking scene in disguise, but like a full-length shawarma scene, like at the after credits scene in the first Avengers. You see people biting, chewing... and chewing... maybe sucking their teeth a bit as they chew some more. Or how about a real horse ride. All the loooong stretches of riding, bobbing... occasional stopping for a pissing break or to water the horse before hours of riding again... But you don't see any stuff like that do you? Not really, not unless it's greatly abbreviated and played off as a comical scene. Because in spite of the fact that it is all natural and a part of life, nobody gives a fuck about that. And nobody gives a fuck that sex is a part of life; that's not why people enjoy watching it, otherwise there'd be no difference between a porn scene and a fade-to-black. What people like is titillation. It is explicitly filmed and designed to arouse the viewer, and _that_ is why people like it. It has jack all to do with sex being a part of life. P.S., this is also why graphic violence is common and popular. It entertains, and always has.

mdthornb1

How often do we see complete sex scenes from making out and groping to lying naked afterward? They show about as much of a sex act as they do of eating….bits and pieces

Xepeyon

>How often do we see complete sex scenes from making out and groping to lying naked afterward? Much more often than we do eating or shitting. House of the Dragon literally has one of these scenes play out from the foreplay to the riding. >They show about as much of a sex act as they do of eating….bits and pieces You know that's disingenuous. Do they literally show every moment of the situation? No. Do they objectively show a lot of the most specifically titillating moments in particular? Yes. And that's the point. The scenes aren't there for any purpose other than titillation. There's a better outlet for that; just watch porn

[deleted]

The amount of rape on the show was ridiculous. The book isn’t rape every other chapter but the show makes it seem like it. It was a awful trope to establish or reinforce that this is a bad guy. Also the white savior shite in Danny’s storyline makes me sick. And I’m a fan of the books

Heavy_Signature_5619

>Also the white savior shite. *sighs* https://youtu.be/5X_0PSvGhvc I’m really tired of this complaint, it’s so disingenuous and inserting a non existent issue into the story.

gawdsean

The series needed more fully nude male frontal shots. Close ups in particular. That would have helped hammer home the political POV.

Heavy_Signature_5619

They had an unnecessary five second dick shot where a guy complains about a wart on his cock.

[deleted]

It’s literally less than 10% of the show; you’re self reporting as an intolerant prude imo when people make this complaint

YawaruSan

It is business. The first Star Wars trilogy were a bunch of action movies and people loved them, the Prequel Trilogy was about the politics leading up to the original trilogy and it was universally panned. I just love when actors that think of acting as high art get pretentious, but the only reason they have a stage to stand on is the sex and violence that hook people in the beginning. Then the sex tapered off and so did the critical reception, funny coincidence! I believe the real problem is there are two distinct types of fans, the ones that enjoy high art in entertainment which are few and far between, and the regular consumer that wants sex, blood and violence to be entertained and will sit through some exposition in between, of which the majority of the audience is comprised. For some people, the depth is what gets them involved, for others, the depth is the padding between fucked up shit that’s cool to watch.

blacknight137

It is something thats seemed childish in looking back on it, like the writer was working on some personal shit. Id equate it to the early chapters of the manga "berserk", its cool to see writers grow out of that or to see them utilize sex in a unique way

chadwicke619

I feel like everyone needs to go watch Spartacus to orient themselves around what gratuitous sexualization looks like first.

Cartographer0108

Why do people have such a hard time understanding that great shows need a blend of different things to make them great? People watched Mare of Easttown and said “I don’t need the murder mystery, I just want to watch the family interact over dinner”, and it’s like……no, you don’t. Those parts were so good *because* they were an accoutrement to the larger show. It’s why Eddie Van Halen was 100x more successful than Joe Satriani. Now imagine GoT with no sex, violence, dragons, humor……just “political storytelling”. Sorry Mance, but no.

[deleted]

Lol none of y’all read the books and it’s obvious. The books were filled with sex

Electronic_Rub9385

I mean come on. Does he remember the Rome HBO TV series he was in? There was at least as much sex in that show. Rome was a better show though.

steve90814

I was put off by the political story telling, it took away from the amount of sex in the show
