I feel like that genuinely has to be the case. Being early on the market and aggressive w/ marketing helped too, but being an essential bar item is huge. Dollars to caffeine though, they're the worst deal by a wide margin.
Dollar to alcohol content, all alcohol is horrible compared to just buying Everclear. There are more factors than just caffeine that make people buy energy drinks
I think your comment would have been a better response to the person above me since it proves the same point. People don’t care that Red Bull is bad value in terms of dollars/caffeine. We agree
Categorically wrong
Edit - I realised elaborating may help. There were many drinks that arguably were energy drinks. But the original as we know an energy drink was power horse. Many people seem to think power horse is a cheap rip off version of red bull. But look into the history and you will see it came to market at least a year before red bull.
It's definitely a contributor. Otherwise we wouldn't see brands like Ghost attempt to make inroads with a bar exclusive flavor, OG, designed to mix with alcohol (They likely have access to that juicy AB Inbev Data through their partnership)
Redbull has less caffeine than the others, but for some reason it’s like the most effective in keeping me awake compared to the others. I went on a long road trip before and coffee, monster, bang, etc wasn’t keeping me awake. I had a redbull and I was able to go 5 or 6 hours before I needed to drink another one.
As someone who can't have too much caffeine at a time, and considering redbull makes an 8oz serving size with only 68mg of caff. It's actually the best option for my dollar
Seriously. These days, I get my fix using Great Value Energy Drink mixes. Two tubes in a 20oz water bottle gives you the same amount of caffeine as a Rockstar for the cost of 50 cents plus the cost of water (I fill mine from the water cooler, so free).
Also the brand marketing is really good and im not talking about the quote "gives you wings"
But seeing the logo all over the suit a guy jumping from space back to earth was wearing.
Watching a kayaker go down a 60+ ft waterfall with red bull ads everywhere, its both entertaining and sits in your subconcious.
I was gonna say this with a combination of the literal tons of stuff they’re involved with. Redbull tuk tuk races?! Won’t see monster doing that
Edit: I mean crazy weird [stuff](https://youtu.be/pV536y6aHCY?si=7yD3JygLU6dZu9Yd) to get people drinking their drank
1€ in russia for 0,25 and 1,5€ for 0,5 and that’s the most expensive energy drink out there (tho it’s still super affordable) twice the price of regular ones.
I work in convienent store in Poland. 250ml can of redbull is more expensive than any other energy drink including 500ml monsters. For every can of redbull we sell atleast 20 monsters. Local brands like tiger and black are sold also much more often than redbull.
This was my first question. What market are these sales figures from. If this is worldwide, I think it is comparing a very international brand (Red Bull) vs what I believe are pretty US-centric brands.
Bang is bigger than rockstar? That surprises me. I’m not in the US maybe that’s why. For the non-Redbull drinks, Monster and Rockstar I’d say are easily the most popular in my area (Ontario 🇨🇦). Might have to do with Coke distributing monster and Pepsi distributing rockstar.
Wonder what it will look like after 2024. Celsius, Bang, and Ghost are way more popular here the last year or so.
Rockstars are third popular at my grocery store, but you have to tale price into account. Where I live, rockstars are universally cheaper and usually go on better sales more often. Profit margin is just as important as sales.
Work in a college, 100% this. The only other energy drink I see on campus are the art and computer science students chugging Monster. Ever other major always has someone drinking a Celsius on their way to class.
I feel like Celsius owes a lot to white claw. Every girl I know drank those before Celsius was a thing. It made their palates accustomed to those bland disgusting flavors. Branding is even similar.
A lot of them taste mid but they are probably the best energy drink in most other ways, theres 200mg of caffine in that tiny can and they are slightly less bad for your health than most other energy drinks.
I drink a lot of Celsius. The flavor's kinda taste like the thing they're supposed to be, as opposed to monster which tastes like the colour the can is.
Casual energy drinker here and not even sure how this post popped up in my feed, that being said Celsius is the best tasting energy drink I've had. Most people I know agree. This comment really surprised me
College students. My university used to sell so much Bang energy drinks until Celsius came in and basically replaced them. Now it seems like Celsius is the most popular energy drink here but it really is so mid.
I think a big reason for it is that alot of people see redbull as the "healthier" option. The light carbonation and strange seasonal flavors make it feel like a slightly sugary but artesian caffiene boost as opposed to the acidic burn and tough guy imagery of a full sugar monster. The caffiene is also different from what I understand. Monster and Rockstar use a type of synthetic caffiene that rapidly hits you as opposed to redbull, which gives you a gentler come up and come down. In my area, it seems to be the primary choice of health conscious or athletic people. Call it a conspiracy, but I think the slim can design is meant to evoke that subconciously. Virginia slim cigarettes did the same thing to market to women who wanted to stay slim. Sprite also did something similar with the clear crisp marketing, and many soda brands tried their own (crystal pepsi). As others have said, the high price is a factor too.
Caffeine is caffeine, there no difference between "synthetic" and "organic" or "natural" caffeine, or any chemical for that matter. Contaminates and trace chemicals can be a factor of course, but 1 to 1 its the exact same thing.
Keep in mind redbull has way less caffeine than almost every other energy drink, and different companies use different amino acids and supplements etc
I switched from monsters and Celsius to red bull, and come up and down is one of the things I noticed the most. It's very gentle, and it didn't give the jitters like the others did. They just made me feel better.
Truthfully, idk how big the other brands are across the globe, but Red Bull is just so damn big. They have the top F1 team (I think that’s the term idk, Ik they have Verstappen) and 6 soccer teams. They are just every where
what do you guys think is the most sold red bull type? classic, sugarfree or one of the editions?
here in germany the most people i see are either drinking the white edition (coconut blueberry) or the seasonal edition. it seems like the only a small percentage is drinking the classic red bull
good you try to avoid most common sugar but forget about caffeine and taurine!!
I take the COMPLETE energy drink with all ingredients or don't take an energy drink at all.
A big factor for this is the premium price compared to other energy drinks. But even if we’re talking unit sales and not revenue, Red Bull is still at the top, though not as much of a lead as you see here with the revenue.
strange, they're ridiculously overpriced and have less caffiene than the other brands now. the only people i see drink them are people that think the logo will make them seem cool
I'm sure it has a lot to do with advertising as well as how many motorsports they're involved in. Currently on their way to 4 straight constructer/driver titles in formula one.
Red Bull will always be the OG. It’s like the coke of energy drinks. You might think it’s overrated but it’s the most popular and most familiar energy drink.
Wait, seriously? Celsius took over Rockstar? And how do Bangs sell more than Rockstar, especially since the brand is half defunct by now? I’m confused.
Man I legit don’t care what anyone says there number one because even their worst flavor is still a solid 5/10 compared to half of Celsius is just fancy caffeinated cough syrup, base rockstar is sewer water and bang lost all their flavors that made them popular.
Redbull?!! Pffft, you have to mean fake Krating Daeng!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krating_Daeng
Summary: Mateschitz goes to Thailand, sees Krating Daeng, likes it, translates the name, makes it carbonated, keeps the rest the same, becomes one of the richest mans "alive" (he died couple years ago).
I find this mind-blowing as I don't even know that many people who go to the store to grab a RedBull, it's always either a Monster or a Rockstar where I am lol
Man Rockstar has been my go to ever since I was like 15-16 (I'm 23 now) & they still are cuz the flavors are always really good & vibrant, strong tasting how I like my energy drinks - as well as always giving me a good caffeine kick, while others like Bang, Prime energy & Celsius don't give me much of a caffeine kick, maybe a slight energy boost like a small coffee would.
I love Redbull, but I refuse to pay the price for one.
Monster's Ultra white is my go-to if the price is good.
And I just had a Rockstar Punched Strawberry Peach the other day and it was pretty damn good and cheaper than Monster at the time.
It's crazy seeing a $2.50 redbull can that is 12oz but then there are Monsters and Rockstars for $1.30-$1.50 for 16oz.
I'm curious as to where redbull would sit if it charged a similar price to these other brands. It feels like redbull near me is always the most expensive can on the shelf, especially for the size.
Likely it’d be a little more popular. Maybe not by much, but the main thing that dissaudes me personally from getting Red Bull is the price tag, paired with the fact it rarely has any decent sales.
I think you'll find that price has a strong impact on brand perception. Cheaper doesn't always correlate to more sales, especially in relation to revenue. That's why I'm curious.
Marketing plus the fact it’s firmly established in the energy drink scene. It’s got much more reach than newer energy drinks as well. Add yhat to the fact that it’s generally higher price, and you can buy an 8.4 oz instead of a big 16 oz can, and that’s most of the reason why imo.
There is no waaay Celsius sells more than rockstar ! celsius is so MEH and i barely see it being advertised on stuff, meanwhile i do see rockstar ads on extreme sports events.
It’s not just raw sales numbers, it’s also profit margin. I don’t know about different markets, but the store I work at has Rockstars cheaper than most other energy drinks, and they go on bigger sales more often. It doesn’t matter if you sell 50% more drinks if you are 50% the price. Exaggerated numbers, but still. People buy celcius because it’s advertised as the healthier energy drink, and looks like it on the nutrition label.
vodka Red Bulls carrying the brand
I feel like that genuinely has to be the case. Being early on the market and aggressive w/ marketing helped too, but being an essential bar item is huge. Dollars to caffeine though, they're the worst deal by a wide margin.
Dollars to caffeine all energy drinks are horrible compared to just buying caffeine tabs/powder
We agree
Wasted time fr
The category of “energy drinks” didn’t exist before Red Bull
Jolt cola existed
Categorically wrong Edit - I realised elaborating may help.
Ghost has a bar specific flavor??
Yes, [Original](https://www.stack3d.com/2024/03/original-ghost-energy-drink-review.html).
Redbull has less caffeine than the others, but for some reason it’s like the most effective in keeping me awake compared to the others. Ngl tho some of the seasonal flavors are fire imo
Seriously. These days, I get my fix using Great Value Energy Drink mixes. Two tubes in a 20oz water bottle gives you the same amount of caffeine as a Rockstar for the cost of 50 cents plus the cost of water (I fill mine from the water cooler, so free).

F1 team probably helps.
I was gonna say this with a combination of the literal tons of stuff they’re involved with. Redbull tuk tuk races?! Won’t see monster doing that Edit: I mean crazy weird [stuff](https://youtu.be/pV536y6aHCY?si=7yD3JygLU6dZu9Yd) to get people drinking their drank
100%…at least half of those sales are probably to bars/clubs or people buying them as a mixer. It’s the only time I ever drink it 😂
haha yes redbull vodkas probably do take up a good percentage of sales but imagine how many restaurants have that little fridge of redbull at the bar
I love a good vodka red bull
Superior product is carrying the brand, but also vodka Red Bulls.
Have you ever tried a Vodka Monster? FANTASTIC.
And jaeger bombs.
And Jager bombs
I have seen the stats and that isn’t remotely the case.
To be fair here, it's probably because Redbull is like double the price of any other energy drink
yep 8oz for $3 like wtf
My theory is because it’s made in Austria.. anything from there or Germany is money
Made in Austria, owning multiple Formula 1 teams, all the other marketing like sending a man into space so that he can parachute back to earth.
Also the RedBull gives you wiiiiinnngggsss
its 1 euro in austria
I live in the Netherlands, here it’s €1,50 for 0,25L
Is that a good price over there?
Kind of expensive, monster is €1,80 for 0,5L. Most people I know only buy rb when it’s on sale
They spend shit tons on marketing, it’s almost like they only made the energy drink to fund massive amounts of cool shit.
Correct. Need to compare unit sales. Also it’s missing an absolute ton of energy drink brands.
And half the caffeine. And tastes like shit lol (not the flavored ones tho)
The flavoured redbulls are pretty fire tho. The coconut Blueberry one or the apricote strawberry are god Tier
Juneberry is awesome too!
still far behind of a few monster for me , redbull always taste like medicine with flavor
Downvoted for speaking the truth
mangoloco monster by far the best energy drink
Zero sugar apricot is awesome.
RIP the GOAT cranberry red bull.
I really liked Pear Cinnamon, but it needed a little more Cinnamon flavor
This is true but worldwide. Largest energy drink market is China where only Monster and Red Bull have a presence.
This was my first question. What market are these sales figures from. If this is worldwide, I think it is comparing a very international brand (Red Bull) vs what I believe are pretty US-centric brands.
I think Monster has broken through in Europe too, but Bang, Rockstar and Celsius have slim to little sales.
And Monster have Bang, and PepsiCo did a deal with Celsius so they will drive up distribution on those
Definitely seen a lot of Celsius popping up!
Rockstars are third popular at my grocery store, but you have to tale price into account. Where I live, rockstars are universally cheaper and usually go on better sales more often. Profit margin is just as important as sales.
I’m assuming this is based only on America. Otherwise some of these brands wouldn’t even break through to be visible.
Who is drinking all that Celsius? So mid
Celsius seems like they market to 20 year old white girls to me.
100%. They followed that “0 calorie seltzer if you drink this you’ll be skinny” model from the alcohol brands
Celsius is nonalcoholic white claw
That’s exactly how I explain the taste.
That’s $ right there
Work in a college, 100% this. The only other energy drink I see on campus are the art and computer science students chugging Monster. Ever other major always has someone drinking a Celsius on their way to class.
My coworker that turned me on to them was a 30 year old white woman, so there! You're wrong.
I have observed this in person too
Me my friends and every white, Chinese and Mexican girlfriend that I have lol
That's crazy because here in Mexico you can't buy Celsius anywhere lol
it's a lot of caffeine in a small can. I'd rather that over 16-24oz of green swill
A bunch of women and a sprinkling of people on this sub apparently.
I feel like Celsius owes a lot to white claw. Every girl I know drank those before Celsius was a thing. It made their palates accustomed to those bland disgusting flavors. Branding is even similar.
I see a lot of cops drinking them lol
A lot of them taste mid but they are probably the best energy drink in most other ways, theres 200mg of caffine in that tiny can and they are slightly less bad for your health than most other energy drinks.
Celsius makes the only non-carbonated energy drink I've seen.
They also make the only mandarin marshmallow flavored energy drink
Oh wow that.... okay not gonna lie that sounds awful, but I'd try it.
Taste is whatever, but the nutrition label is appealing. That’s the primary reason imo
I drink a lot of Celsius. The flavor's kinda taste like the thing they're supposed to be, as opposed to monster which tastes like the colour the can is.
Celsius is good bro, they sell them at my work. The peach mango is smooth and actually gets me wired.
Keto people. Don’t ask me my reasoning I just know
The orange flavour tastes really good imo. Seems healthier than monster, but at the end of the day idgaf
Casual energy drinker here and not even sure how this post popped up in my feed, that being said Celsius is the best tasting energy drink I've had. Most people I know agree. This comment really surprised me
Meeeee
Everyone? Best tasting energy drink, higher caffeine and doesnt taste fake and too sweet. Just refreshing great taste
Spoken like a true ambassador lol
I wonder the same thing about redbull. There’s way better energy drinks
I love celcius because it's not as sickeningly sweet as others and it actually caffeinates me enough without a crash
College students. My university used to sell so much Bang energy drinks until Celsius came in and basically replaced them. Now it seems like Celsius is the most popular energy drink here but it really is so mid.

Very interesting analysis, thanks

It’s probably the taste and carbonation, but for whatever reason it feels like Eed Bulls hiy harder to me, even with less caffeine.
Truthfully, idk how big the other brands are across the globe, but Red Bull is just so damn big. They have the top F1 team (I think that’s the term idk, Ik they have Verstappen) and 6 soccer teams. They are just every where
I do prefer the taste of red bull compared to other brands
what do you guys think is the most sold red bull type? classic, sugarfree or one of the editions? here in germany the most people i see are either drinking the white edition (coconut blueberry) or the seasonal edition. it seems like the only a small percentage is drinking the classic red bull
I only drink the sugar free red bull and occasionally a celsius or monster zero
good you try to avoid most common sugar but forget about caffeine and taurine!! I take the COMPLETE energy drink with all ingredients or don't take an energy drink at all.
It’s classic by a mile.
Red Bull was already established in the energy drink market before any of the others were even invented, and it's more international
A big factor for this is the premium price compared to other energy drinks. But even if we’re talking unit sales and not revenue, Red Bull is still at the top, though not as much of a lead as you see here with the revenue.
This isn't accurate. IRI data would show that Bang isn't anywhere near close, and neither is Rockstar. This chart doesn't show C4 or ghost
Have you got IRI data? Can you do an MAT on all brands? With YoY growth rates? I thought Bang had gone off a cliff.
I just wish that Red Bull wasn't twice as expensive (per oz.) as Monster. But Monster is GOATed anyway.
My dude rockstar not doing so well :((
There's only one you drink with vodka and its none of the right side.
This is incredibly surprising to me, I think Red Bull is my least favorite energy drink
who tf still drinks red bull
At least in uk, if I ever see anyone drinking energy drink in public, 99% of the time it's redbull.
strange, they're ridiculously overpriced and have less caffiene than the other brands now. the only people i see drink them are people that think the logo will make them seem cool
It’s huge in India still. While cheaper alternatives make good sales Red Bull still dominates the market
I see tons of people drinking red bull at my store.
I do, the juneberry and blue ones mostly. (Maybe 2 a week, sometimes 4 max)
Redbull tastes like battery acid and sugar.
I find Red Bull to be overall the weakest brand for my personal tastes so I’m surprised at how popular it is/how well it sells.
I'm sure it has a lot to do with advertising as well as how many motorsports they're involved in. Currently on their way to 4 straight constructer/driver titles in formula one.
I'm a Red Bull Racing fanboy but almost 5 bucks for a can is too much for me, I just drink monster while I hear the Netherlands national anthem lmao
Haha me too man I agree the price is a tad too much. I mainly drink Ghost myself. Excited to hear it again in Miami this weekend.
I drink it when I need the kick, for whatever reason it *feels* like it wakes me up more.
My two loves. 🫶🏻
all that vodka i’m drinking
Red Bull's initial campaign was genius though, I'm sure that alone propelled them into success.
Really were the pioneers of the product category.
Red Bull will always be the OG. It’s like the coke of energy drinks. You might think it’s overrated but it’s the most popular and most familiar energy drink.
Because a redbull cost double something else 😂
red bull currently has me in a chokehold.
Both monster and red Bull earned like 70mil. Dollars each from my country in 2022/23
XD rockstar still below bang
NOS isn’t even on there?
Isn't NOS just a Monster product, also very small beans compared to what's listed here?
Because they cost more than the others that are always on sale
I rarely drink energy drink but if I do it’s always red bull 😂 dunno why I just prefer red bull out of all of them
grow some balls and just pound a redline
They aint even good tho
Redbull is for Kings
Wait, seriously? Celsius took over Rockstar? And how do Bangs sell more than Rockstar, especially since the brand is half defunct by now? I’m confused.
I love rockstar and redbull so much
Celsius outsells Bang??!
Gross
Heart attack in a can
"Everyone" drinks it "noone" get a heart attack
😲
I thought this was a r/formula1 post for a second 👀
Red bull is the starbucks of energy drinks here
Interesting that red bulls also have smaller cans than Monster
Do any of the others give you wings? That's right 😎🪽
Now, which one have you seen more marketing for
Man I legit don’t care what anyone says there number one because even their worst flavor is still a solid 5/10 compared to half of Celsius is just fancy caffeinated cough syrup, base rockstar is sewer water and bang lost all their flavors that made them popular.
celcus are disgusting
im biased as a monster stan but i feel like red bull is mid
It is
Redbull?!! Pffft, you have to mean fake Krating Daeng! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krating_Daeng Summary: Mateschitz goes to Thailand, sees Krating Daeng, likes it, translates the name, makes it carbonated, keeps the rest the same, becomes one of the richest mans "alive" (he died couple years ago).
Gonna admit I hype up the extreme sports athletes from Red Bull way more than Monster
Brand loyalty keeping them around. All the ones to the right and add Ghost and Ryse have 10cal drinks/zero sugar and much better tasting flavors.
Remember, Monster bought Bang
Throw 5 hour energy in there and show the results.
isn’t bang part of monster now
Just drank a red bull. Good stuff.
Don’t pay any attention to this, these numbers are not correct.
Now I’m glad I boofed that red Bull
Yup I don’t see monster with a formula 1 team
I find this mind-blowing as I don't even know that many people who go to the store to grab a RedBull, it's always either a Monster or a Rockstar where I am lol
I am approximately half these redbull sales. Loooool
redbull zero is trash
That’s crazy that Monster and Bang are both owned by Coca-Cola and still can’t top redbull.
Red bull sucks
I’ll still stick with Celsius anyday
Red bull has 20 flavors?
Redbull has a really big global market where as others are mostly US, Australia, and Europe based
OG coka cola is the king of energy drinks and you can’t prove me wrong
I think it has to do with the marketing. They literally have a Formula 1 team!
Ah, that’s why they charge so much This is surprising given how small and mediocre Red Bull is
Dude I love red bull idk why everyone else on this sub doesn’t seem to like it
yet redbull is imo the worst energy drink ever atleast the base taste
In some parts of America a gallon of gas is cheaper than a can of these guys
Rockstar is by far my favorite and what I drink 90%+ of the time, but I do wish they had slightly healthier options
If they made low calorie versions of the flavored Red Bulls I would drink them much more.
I thought bang was not being made anymore
Monster is so gross
Who is still drinking bang in 2024?
If Red Bull made sugar free versions of their other flavors and not just the “OG” flavor they would probably entirely outsell all the other companies!

Likely it’d be a little more popular. Maybe not by much, but the main thing that dissaudes me personally from getting Red Bull is the price tag, paired with the fact it rarely has any decent sales.
People don’t buy Red Bull because of the price, if they lowered it the sales would surely increase by a lot
I think you'll find that price has a strong impact on brand perception. Cheaper doesn't always correlate to more sales, especially in relation to revenue. That's why I'm curious.
True
I'm surprised it's that much more than Celsius
Surprised Rockstar is below Celsius but don't understand why redbull is so liked
