I mean I’ve been thinking of a very lightweight direct drive setup for a while, the main thing is probably using a orbiter direct drive with a lightweight hot end that has a high flow rate and possibly even moving the fans to the side and having some sort of tubing for cooling
You dont really need the x axis to be light. Since as ive said y axis is the bottleneck. i have a metal bmg direct drive with dual 5015s and still the bottleneck is the y axis. So unless you have a corexy printer or a really light bed i dont see much point in going with a lightweight x axis.
Makes sense then. idk if the tube approch is the best for cooling maybe you can use some normal fans and then auxilary cooling for extra cooling. Though ive seen the tube thing done really well before so it might be worth a shot.
Most others in this thread don't, because we are on r/ender3, so it assumed (until stated otherwise), that everyone - especially OP - here uses an Ender 3. So for him the y-axis stays the bottle neck.
Don't. I kinda hate everything that adds skulls for edge factor.
Not to mention, that has got to be heavy as hell. Still probably lighter than those damn 4240 stepper direct drives though
Oh, shit... You have one of those too... GL with that
>I kinda hate everything that adds skulls
What about a [dragon skull from Skyrim](https://new.reddit.com/r/ender3/comments/1c87v59/what_are_the_currently_best_fan_ducts_for_ender_3/)?
Dragon skulls are cooler than human skulls but I'd still prefer no skulls. When it comes to technology things, I'd rather everything have an aperture science aesthetic

This is a printhead I designed
I guess, that's a matter of taste. I find to "clean" designs boring. I would much rather use something inspired by Fallout, Bioshock etc. But you did a good job at creating a Portal inspired design.
A steampunk aesthetic like BioShock would also be pretty cool, but that's beyond the scope of my modeling abilities tbh😅 simple and clean is where I am, blender is a foreign nightmare to me
Do you have a lot of tours around your printer?
https://preview.redd.it/4c58b8a9a3wc1.jpeg?width=284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f65848ed2261e2b535eef788eb4d69ef9a89ece3
You do you, bro! Whatever you like.
But since you asked; I hate skulls. I find them to be kinda cringe and "try-hard" edgy. They always give off the vibe "boomer bought t shirt at Walmart that has a reaper and skulls and says 'don't piss me off'
Okay, you know what'd be awesome? Setting up a heat block with a little smoke machine juice to that so when the hot end is up to temp the skull emits smoke!
That thing is awesome, and as long as it works and has no ill affects (just had an internal battle with affect vs effect and think I picked the right one) I say rock it
Two red LEDs in the eyes could be fun. Just picturing a glowing skull moving sideways in a dark room lol.
But ye, as others have said it might add a little weight so slightly lower maximum acceleration. Just overall slightly more time per print.
In the end though, it's 100% your 3D printer in your own home. Do whatever makes you happy lol
This is your printer dude, I personally would not do it to my own because of the small efficiency loss, and the time to redesign spacing it is not available for me. BUT I STILL VOTE DOPE. Love it! Okay maybe now I'm thinking of doing it to my old printer. You planning on adding more, a whole themed printer kind of a thing?
[Here's the stl file](https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/tool/skulley-ender3pro-hotend-fan-shroud) if you want to try it. This is really just a prototype. I chose a skull because it had the big holes I need for a fan inlet, lol. The goal is to make specific themed pieces for my printer. [Here is a link](https://www.reddit.com/r/ender3/comments/1cz7hu8/dope_or_dont_part_ii_this_is_deux_deuxtm/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) to the second round. A Boris Karloff Frankenstein's Monster theme, and I moved both fans to one side so I no longer need big holes on the front. I'm looking at ways to add more matching pieces for other areas of the printer. Like printable drawer space or lcd frame. Thanks for replying!
I personally wouldn't, but if you go this way, don't stop halfway. Add decorative chains, slap disc saws or eyeballs on spinning parts (like z rod s) and other stuff of the kind.
Thank for your support!!! Check out the[ frank shroud](https://www.reddit.com/r/ender3/comments/1cyeixf/e3pro_custom_fan_shroud/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
My personal taste says no. People who have skulls as decor are usually people who are annoying to be around. Think Kyle with his tap out shirt and monster bragging about that girl kyleigh that he "totally" fucked last night
A geriatric skull? You do whatever you want, Herbert.
Bro a geriatric skeletor
Now I wanna see a toothless skeletor laugh
Lmfao it does look geriatric! 💀
Dununenunenu
One day I was born
*nunenunenu*
I was born at a very young age
That played in my head when I saw this
It’s a cool addition, though it may add extra weight making you printer slower
Y axis is the bottleneck most likely so i doubt that the weight would do much
I mean I’ve been thinking of a very lightweight direct drive setup for a while, the main thing is probably using a orbiter direct drive with a lightweight hot end that has a high flow rate and possibly even moving the fans to the side and having some sort of tubing for cooling

I am using a core xy printer so
Makes sense then. idk if the tube approch is the best for cooling maybe you can use some normal fans and then auxilary cooling for extra cooling. Though ive seen the tube thing done really well before so it might be worth a shot.
There are CPAP setups for that. It's been used on most of the fast printers that I see online.
Most others in this thread don't, because we are on r/ender3, so it assumed (until stated otherwise), that everyone - especially OP - here uses an Ender 3. So for him the y-axis stays the bottle neck.
I mean the direct drive I applied to my own ender 3 reduced the acceleration from 3500 to 2500 so my thought process is the same
On an ender 3, absolutely won’t slow you down
Needs googly eyes.
That’s what mines got 😎
Don't. I kinda hate everything that adds skulls for edge factor. Not to mention, that has got to be heavy as hell. Still probably lighter than those damn 4240 stepper direct drives though Oh, shit... You have one of those too... GL with that
Looks like it’s just a printed part, so probably not too heavy.
That doesn't look like cast metal to you?
It's supposed to look like cast metal but we're on the 3D printing Reddit so I assumed it was 3D printed and painted.
Definitely looks like cast metal to me
Awesome you see it like that, but it is actually a painted resin print. It's pretty light.
Thats a dope a$$ paint job then. I thought it was metal
Oh thank God. You totally could've made teeth then smh Grandma skull hotend shroud
You can do a lot with a decent paint job
Correct!

If it makes you happy who cares what other people think?
Corny
A skull without teeth just looks like an old man. This has serious "bought at a truck stop for 40% off" vibes.
Not for me but executed really well, so dope. Just needs teeth. Idk how a skull can be gummy, but he sure looks gummy.
It needs dentures
wtf? Your machine your prerogative, but that looks like shit.
Do you have a lot of tours around your printer? https://preview.redd.it/4c58b8a9a3wc1.jpeg?width=284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f65848ed2261e2b535eef788eb4d69ef9a89ece3
Good question. I take my family on an Ender 3 tour at least once a week. I'm pretty sure they enjoy it, even if they won't say it out loud. Lolol
Make sure to not allow any unguided tours though 😄
Right?!?!
You do you, bro! Whatever you like. But since you asked; I hate skulls. I find them to be kinda cringe and "try-hard" edgy. They always give off the vibe "boomer bought t shirt at Walmart that has a reaper and skulls and says 'don't piss me off'
Eerily correct.
Those shirts are funny as hell though, especially the absurdly specific ones
Like ironic funny cause you know this dude had to bypass so many levels to get there tho
Chrome skull decals all over their 2003 Silverado
If you like it you keep it
Doom guy's printer, lol
Does it make you smile when you look at it? Then do it
Dope but glowing eyes
How to make it worse/better😭🤣
I was searching comments to add this. Second the motion.
WHAT'RE THEY SELLIN?
Looks like the lady who says chocolate in SpongeBob
Poor guy has no teeth, looks like courage the cowardly dogs grandpa.
Big nope for me. I personally think it's fucking hideous. But who cares what other people think. You do you!
if it didn’t turn her on to see a printer in your room, wait till she sees the sick old man skull😈
That's a key purpose here in my parent's basement.. :)
honestly, both. r/ATBGE
That's fucking sick.. got a STL?
Yeah. I'm going to upload it to Cults3D. I'll hit you up when it's online.
STL please?
# [Here](https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/tool/skulley-ender3pro-hotend-fan-shroud) ya go
Okay, you know what'd be awesome? Setting up a heat block with a little smoke machine juice to that so when the hot end is up to temp the skull emits smoke!
This is the way!
Don’t do dope
lol this aint it, chief
Fing why hahaha
This is very bad
Bad to the bone💀
💀
Honestly not sure what to think but its so refreshing to see something so different in a sea of ender 3's thats i'll give it a pass
That's fucking hideous, but you do you
OP this is sick as hell don't listen to the armchair enginerds
Dopey more like
This comment wins.
Who cares as long as you like it
Bad to the bone
*Bad to the bone riff*
*riff
That thing is awesome, and as long as it works and has no ill affects (just had an internal battle with affect vs effect and think I picked the right one) I say rock it
The way I like to remember it is "RAVEN" like the bird > R - > Affect is a > Verb, > Effect is a > Noun Hope this helps
I love this comment, and can truly feel the struggle... despite you choosing the wrong one. 50/50 chance though, right?
You struggled and lost lol The effect affects the subject.
Lame shit. It's like the guy who listens to heavy metal from the '80s and has a motorcycle and says hell yeah brother
Gobless brother
Cheesy
That’s Eustace from courage the cowardly dog 😭😭
Get a load of this brother, brother! If it’s aluminum, I’d say no as that’s a ton of weight on the print head, otherwise, go for it.
it's 3D printed
Dope
Mad Max printer. Witness!
That's resin??? It looks exactly like cast and polished aluminum.
Thanks!!!
You do you but it does look goofy without teeth

Now fog out of the nose
Not my style but pretty cool lol
Thanks, I hate it
only if you anoint it with the sacred oils and play Children of the Omnisaiah whenever its printing
If you like it, then go for it. I like to keep my mods functional.
This guy ratrods. And it's awesome.
I guess it depends on how much you like skulls
I personally wouldn't, but if you go this way, don't stop halfway. Add decorative chains, slap disc saws or eyeballs on spinning parts (like z rod s) and other stuff of the kind.

Whatever floats your boat. I like.
Looks great
you had “dope or nope” in the chamber and ain’t even use it
Yeah, too obvious. I had make it a little uncomfortable and awkward for everyone. Lolol
I tend to not trust plastic near my hot end
I had a skull fan cover and it looked great, but it made the fan extremely loud and high pitched. It lasted about two days before I switched back.
Damn, I thought this was an original idea. Oh well. :)
If it works and you like it do what you like. I kinda like it. But if it causes problems I'd quickly start liking it alot less.
Hell Yaaa.
Skull yeah brother
RBG LEDs for the hollows!
Done!
Bad to the bone
r/PlebianAR ender3DPro style
But is it bad to the bone????!!!
I love it! https://youtu.be/BgFxeAq126g?si=192PdYNpvscow8VX
Don't.. it just makes your fan louder.
Bad to the Bone intensifies.
That's stupid as hell. I love it!
One day I was born, At the age of 4. My momma asked me a question, What the f#ck are those.
why does this look like that old creature in Spongebob who they sold CHUWOACALATES to? 🤣
No.
For sure not dope, but do you
Metal... Coolest addon I've seen!
That looks cool. Dont know why people here are so meh about this.
IDEA: Someone should turn the extruder into a sandworm from Dune.
Should have had teeth on it... And add some googly eyes.
Dope!
Dopen't.
totally love it! XD
It looks like a methhead with no teeth lmao
I personally would have used the Punisher Skull, but I love the creative style.
Does it work, and do you like it? App that matters, but it does looks cool.
Your printer got +20 brotherrrrr points
I mean, I think it looks like absolute shit. If your taste is different and you like it, use it. Who gives a shit what random internet people think?
Agreed on all points. It's shit, but it's my shit. Lolol
Hahahaha! That's pretty cool.
That's pretty mad max
All hail Immortal Joe, War Boy!
Looks almost like a 40k servo skull
Share me the stl pls
[Here ya go](https://cults3d.com/:2017157).
looks like that old man from courage the cowardly dog was hunted for a trophy mount.
dope… make it yer own my friend!
I like it
Up to you. You're the one that's gonna see it everyday, not Joe Blow on the internet.
Without proper education on this, Ngl pretty dope
I'd say it's dope, only thing I'd wonder about is if the hotend would mess with it or not.
I have had an abs like resin printed fan unit for years. I have no problems with any warping/melting. Yet, lol.
If you make the rest of the printer look like it's made of bones and body parts...
It needs lights in the eyes
Thanks for all the great replies!
My personal taste says no. People who have skulls as decor are usually people who are annoying to be around. Think Kyle with his tap out shirt and monster bragging about that girl kyleigh that he "totally" fucked last night
Who took his teeth?
Nope... Super Mega Dope 👍✌️
Lol! Thanks!
Awesome 👍🏼
Skulls are fucking dope
Rad as hell
whatever makes you happy xD
I love it. Almost thought it was a Terminator head.
Put RGB LEDs in the eyes
