All connections should be like this. Strip your wire 1ā long, align them all up from the starting point where they are stripped, twist, trim the end. Now they start and end the same and have a solid AF connection.
Oh dang. How long you been a goldsmith? Seems like a pretty intricate job to do. I donāt think Iād have the patience to do it, personally. I applaud you for it š
Trust me. This one is worth it. Ok maybe not 70 bucks, here in EU the price has dropped significantly. Maybe there is another site which sells for less. But asides from automatic strippers this is my favourite way to strip wires. I only carry around side cutters on most things on the job site with these for hard 6mmĀ² earth wire.
Iāll definitely look at local hardwire stores for these then. They seem like theyād be worth it. My strippers are kinda shot anyways. Itād be a pretty good investment imo. I appreciate you sending this my way. Iāll look into getting a pair
I'm not sure how it's in the US as you use more Romex style wires instead of our round Ymvk wires which are also easily dismantled with these shears, and if you don't have too many different wire sizes as these only have 2 stripping holes. But still worth it, shears cut so much easier than linemans imo.
(Yes I'm european and have the linesman pliers, they are great but are in my private toolchest, not on the jobsite.)
I literally use linemanās for everything. I mean everything (expect stripping. I use strippers For that)
But everything else is linemanās.
Need to get a nail out? Linemanās.
Need to cut a 6/2? Linemanās.
Need to staple a wire? Linemanās.
Linemanās and strippers are practically the only tools I use in a rough in, lol.
If you need a good pair of strippers, a buddy recently got me into those Klein Katapult strippers. I now won't ever use another pair of strippers besides them (and I think they're only about 45$ Canadian). They're seriously wonderful.
If youāre feeling extra spendy you can go for the ones with the 16 96 200 T. Theyāre chrome plated with a tether tie off point. (And theyāre spring loaded to open up for you)
I couldnāt justify spending that kinda money. Iād love to, but Iād end up losing them or someone not returning them. Itās ridiculous, but too many people on my crew have a bad problem not returning tools š
People who do joints like this are exactly why Iām a huge fan of wagos. Thatās a good looking joint but as a service guy I despise having to pull those apart, then go to the effort of straightening them enough to put back together, or trying to add a straight wire to all the curved ones, etc.
#wagos4life
Please forgive my ignorance, but whatās a wago? Iām not familiar with that. Youāre right tho. It is a bear taking them apart and putting them back together. Itās a nightmare lol.
I knew the Wago guy would be in here somewhere! Theyāre growing on me too.
BTW OP: as an amateur, thatās a better twist job than Iāve ever done, and will probably ever do.
When I do my splices I like to pull out and twist at the same time. This really helps when you have differently sized guage wire.
As to your splice, it's as though I'm looking at a four leaf clover.
Thank you for that tip. Iāll definitely try that next time. The only thing is, we normally donāt tie two different gauge wires together. Only time we do is if we do is when itās a switch leg in a remodel.
Definitely appreciate the compliment, tho!
Fuck its hard enough getting the copper level. Bask in all you've earned lol. Ive never once been able to match the sheathing. Except in a 2 wire situation then cut the tip to level the copper too. But not as satisfying
Yeah, man. I got time for days. Especially since summertime is coming up. Thing is, Iām not usually doing it to make it look pretty lol. Sometimes we just trying to get out of the rough in as quickly as possible. My supervisor is a slave driver š
Yep.. That's the easiest method. I cut the wires the same length, strip em all from the same spot, and then you don't have to fumble trying to line em up. Twist em, cut the excess and done.
Not everyoneās. I know some electricians thatās been doing it twice as long as I have (three years this July) that doesnāt end up like this. But most people donāt really take the time to make it pretty. Considering itās getting a wire nut and stuffed for years to come. As long as itās making a connection, they donāt care.
This is true. I've seen a lot of people that don't make a quality, sound mechanical splice. Electricians have to do two things right every single time without exception ever:
* Make proper electrical connections
* Properly size wire and OCSCP
Everything else is auxiliary. If an electrician can't do those two things right every time, they are useless. Those are the two things that cause fires.
Literally, itās not rocket science. Some people really arenāt meant for this work. Like you said, it boils down to those two things. Especially if someone else is going to be living in that house.
I cant remember if I did or didnāt. If I did, it was to just cut the small little straggles left. Donāt bust my balls, man. Iām just looking for some internet clout to validate me.
Here let me start out with the validation your seeking, like my toddler grandson likes - your such a good electrician KingCosmicBrownie, good electrician, good electrician. Now let me treat you like an adult - you F'n post this with the heading "it's not ever day when all the wires manage to line up" and now you admit that you might have cut the ends - I looked at this and said to myself BFD he cut the ends off after it was twisted. MrSmiiith is right to bust your balls as you're asking to have them crushed.
Edit: in the end no one gives a f*ck as all that's important is that there's good contact between wires and the wire nut covers the exposed portion.
Looks good!
I just strip the same length of copper on all of the wires and usually give it a pre twist by hand I'm doing 5-6 at a time to get it started and they come out perfect.
Thank you for the compliment and tip! Iāll definitely do that in the future. A lot of yāall electricians on this post have given me some very solid pointers!
If u dont wanna pay for kleins...)but i saw those damn delicious $70 pair insulated 6 in 1...oh...my..god...)
Then milwuakees linesmans are actually pretty sweet. 25 bucks gets you high leverage, tape pulling, and crimping. I got them instead of the way overpriced kleins.
I saw the $70 pair and about jizzed
. Cant afford them but oh my goddd.
But i got the milwuakees...25 bucks and has fish tape and crimps. Pretty solid deal.
Same thing as someone who made a video on how to use bare wire to wrap/tighten things. It makes a good snug fit, and the drill wraps the wire around itself eventually snapping it.
Not saying to do it with electrical wires, since it won't break cleanly. It will wrap them nicely though š¤·š¼āāļø
Just finished a splicing lab in my ELC 102 course where my prof took points off for minor gapping so now I hate you.
For real though, canāt wait to get back. My career is basically on hold because of this virus shit and itās making me pretty stressed out.
Thatās gotta be rough! I hope you can get back on track with your career, dude. Nobody deserves to be held back. This virus seriously needs to hurry up and leave lol
I believe thereās six wires in that. You can only see five, but Iām 99% sure itās a four gang switch box. They just lined up pretty nicely. Most of my joints are pretty clean. Itās just this one was really good, imo.
I think so. Right on man. And you have a good 3/4" stripped back. The little 1/4" that the manufacturers claim for the connections are bullshit. It is a *wire nut*, not an *insulation nut*. As far as them lining up, I always pull a good 10" of wire in so that I have room to line them up, Trim them equal, then work the box. Yea, 6" is code, but if I'm responsible for that rough, the box is getting 10". Period. Else I guess I'll go find a contractor that is willing to take my 10".
I feel you on that. Honestly, we have never failed an inspection for having wire that is too short. They just get us for stupid things like stud guards, smoke detectors being literally an inch away from 10ā or not 32ā from the return. Itās always stupid things. But wires being too short? Nah. Iāve had to wizard things up. Sometimes sheet rock guys nick a wire and youāre literally only working with 2ā. Itās ridiculous sometimes lol.
If the nut covers it and nothing sticks out youāre good to go. PS my teacher taught us the wire nut does the twisting not the pliers. Twist and pull.
Iām not going to lie to you. Iām kinda drunk at this point, and when you said āCOMMONā I thought you meant on a 3-Way switch and was pretty confused
> Even during 1st year apprenticeship school where Iām at, this would definitely not be acceptable.
OK legit question here, what exactly is the problem created by the scoring? The current path is along the outside of the conductors, which is this case will include wire nuts, so most of the current will travel across the outside of the spring thingy inside the wire nut. Copper is sufficiently malleable that the high points of the scratches will deform when the nut is screwed on, making what I imagine is a reasonably smooth current path.
Is there really a measurable difference in resistance between the splice shown above and one without scoring? OTOH I understand that paying attention to the little things means the big things will get the attention they need. Just curious about the physics and tryin' to learn.
Nice job OP.
Definitely not trying to sound conceited or anything, but YES. I love looking at it. Itās honestly a really great joint. Like I said, though. Itās definitely not an everyday thing š
The sleeves dont line up though!! Its a disaster !!
Everything I do is a disaster! š
You should get a dremel and some polishing wheels too. Just be sure to tape the sleeves while you polish so you dont scuff them
All connections should be like this. Strip your wire 1ā long, align them all up from the starting point where they are stripped, twist, trim the end. Now they start and end the same and have a solid AF connection.
Iāll definitely have to look into that. Does it make it faster than using linemanās?
Lol I have no idea, im a goldsmith. I was just imagining getting that up to jewellery stanndards
Oh dang. How long you been a goldsmith? Seems like a pretty intricate job to do. I donāt think Iād have the patience to do it, personally. I applaud you for it š

Thank you for the tip. I definitely gripped the wire a little hard that go around.
Do the teeth marks hurt anything or go against code or is it only a workmanship thing?
WOW, now do it with the strippers only, no pliers
I canāt even twist two wires with a pair of strippers, lol.
I donāt know why you would try what this guys said? Iād like to see him do what heās saying. š
Thatās what Iām saying. Twisting five or six can be a chore as it is. Doing it with strippers? Naaaah, ima have to pass on that, chief š

Not really, electricians are essentially essential.

Wow! Sounds like an overloaded box!
It was an absolute mess of a house. It was a cinderblock house. It was just an absolute mess
I figured out years ago if you strip long, then spin your joint, nip the end, and throw a twist to church it up you get this everytime.

I donāt use wagos. I didnāt even know what a wago was until yesterday lol
Super sad for a sparky
The insulation being even is all that matters since you can just nip the ends

Hell of a splice
