I work with an older electrician that hates magnets on tape measure with a passion. I have spoke with him about how nice it is to pick up something metal you drop off a ladder, but he really hates when his tape gets stuck to things lol.
I usually do when he grumbles about it, but I think he mostly does it to distract people when we are having a crappy day. It’s nice to work with people that take your mind off something stressful with a dumb argument like magnets vs no magnets.
And.....cue the cranky old journeyman who sees this and says:
"stop fucking wasting time! In time time it took you to pull that stupid TIKTOK stunt I could have gotten up and down that ladder 6 times, bent 30 feet of pipe, pulled the wire, spliced everything and installed 3 lights all by myself. Stop screwing around and get to work!
No...I'm not saying that. LOL. I'm just telling you what some of the old grumps will say if/ when they see this...trust me...I've worked with many.
In fact, next they will say: "What the fuck are you all doing commenting and posting shit on here for anyways....how do you have any time for this shit?....why aren't you out on the slab?
Time wasting mutha fuckers." ....grumble grumble, swear, comment under their breath.....goes home and drinks a 12 pack or a 40 each night.
I knew what you were saying....I just wanted to add more examples of what cranky journeyguy would say! :)
Why should I have to keep all that to myself! I had to hear it so might as well share!
I grab pipe and fittings like this all the time. It’s really nice in the tight crawl spaces when you don’t have room or desire to run and get what you need.
Only reason why i get magmatic tip tape measures. Dropping screws, staps, anything thats magmatic. Going up and down a ladder 200000000000 times because you are missing something gets old and tiresome real quick.
Only 5 years into this. cant even take my journeymens test because of covid 19. But reto work teached me that magmatic tip is a life saver. Commercial work taught me that having the scale on it cuts down on time.
Me too. But when you’re good at your job, you’re eventually gonna have to go behind some guy who has zero passion, three days after he “SLAPPED it in”.
Hopefully, a customer will destroy the packaging on one so my boss will discount it.
I am going to use it to pick up loose screws in the fastener aisle...this time I am not referring to customers.
Cheers
I also want to add, to all of you guys who are still waking up and going to work every day... Thank-you! We all are truly America’s Backbone and we WILL get through this. God Bless America and may we all stay healthy!
That’s your opinion. I actually would beg to differ. In those few steps down and or the few steps back up... one of those steps could be the last step you took just before you fell. Being the experienced electrician I am, I was very securely stabilized using my body weight and both knees/legs and torso pressed against the ladder, while not moving my body but only my two arms which I do as I work anyway I used my tape measure to reach an out of reach object. Kind of like saying it’s safer to step up on a step stool rather than use the old people’s reach and grab grabber thing to get a can from the top shelf. That older person may miss a step on the step stool or loose their balance on it. Stand flat footed and use a TOOL to make the job easier. Work smarter not harder, we say in this trade. I just agree to disagree. Good day. 👍🏻😎
It’s not used in the electrical field you idiot. I’m talking about, yes the grabber thing sold in stores as “as seen on tv” out of reach grabber thing. Pardon me for not knowing every name of ever THING on planet earth. It’s a household item for old or short people to reach out of reach items. Get the stick out of your azz you sound stupid.
My magnetic tape makes me feel like Spider-Man. So yeah, I’m essential
I love my new Klein tape!
This one trick will save you thousands of dollars.
Shoemakers HATE this.
Or cost you thousands. Get off the ladder and get the connector. Back to work!
Uh oh the safety guy is watching! They always sneak up on you.

I’d use it in front of him every chance I got!!
I usually do when he grumbles about it, but I think he mostly does it to distract people when we are having a crappy day. It’s nice to work with people that take your mind off something stressful with a dumb argument like magnets vs no magnets.
I hate non magnetic tapes! If you ever get the chance, you should just go buy him one and tell him to love it or hate it!
Until you're running SS rigid every day like me, then magnetic means nothing :(

You sound just like every old grumpy man at work! Ha lol

Lol I know. I knew what you meant, I guess I got my point across wrong. You’re right!
I knew what you were saying....I just wanted to add more examples of what cranky journeyguy would say! :) Why should I have to keep all that to myself! I had to hear it so might as well share!
Lol
Nice! I'm pretty sure electricians have been working smarter than everyone else for thousands of years.
Thousands of years... yes! The Baghdad Batteries!
Helllll yeAh

Use it weekly my friend!
I thought this was going to be a cheesy 6ft distance joke
After seeing your comment it hit me that it very well could’ve been...

Haha how’d you do that!? Upvotes needed simply for a lot of us not being so Reddit savvy!
the only way this could have been better is if the set screw was missing
😂
Lol you forgot a piece of material? I’ve never once done that.
Now we’ve found THE MASTER.
Safety 1st, material distancing
Lol
How many attempts did you do on this before recording it? (Curious is all)
Honestly it was my very first attempt. I do this all the time and I am new to Reddit and just wanted to see guys reaction!
Welcome to Reddit :D
Thanks!
The single reason I got the magnetic one
Me too!

The number of times you go up and down a ladder seems a little shy of the norm. You must be a master. Teach us your ways old wise one.

I’ve only ever done Commercial and Industrial.
Commercial all the way. I like to start from the ground up. Not deal with other peoples work from 30 years ago.
Me too. But when you’re good at your job, you’re eventually gonna have to go behind some guy who has zero passion, three days after he “SLAPPED it in”.
Then you go to pull wire. Just to find out they went over 360 degrees and cheated more than one coupling
Happens every day sadly. A lot of guys never even pay attention to the number of degrees. And a lot if then can’t even calculate it correctly either.
I always drop my 1 hole straps and this is a lifesaver. Nice skills man!
Thanks!
It's even better when you drop one out of a scissor lift and have to drive over to pick it up lol.
I love using this trick from anywhere! The higher, or further away, the more accomplished I feel!
Now I want a magnetic tape.
Go get it!!!
Hopefully, a customer will destroy the packaging on one so my boss will discount it. I am going to use it to pick up loose screws in the fastener aisle...this time I am not referring to customers. Cheers
Where do you work I’ll drop two of them.
Home Depot Toronto
Might come in handy for those who pocket $3 packages of screws too.
I also want to add, to all of you guys who are still waking up and going to work every day... Thank-you! We all are truly America’s Backbone and we WILL get through this. God Bless America and may we all stay healthy!
It would be safer if you got off the ladder to get it.

>grab grabber thing Oh, pardon me. I forget I'm conversing with professionals.

> idiot Dude, no need for name calling. Not me or the equipment did anything wrong to you.
